School breaks are something that kids look forward to. But for parents, it can be daunting to find ways to keep kids occupied (it’s a big short-term shift in schedule!) So, what do you do? Here are some ideas that will keep your kids busy – without turning to the TV.

Spring break is a fabulous thing. For kids, it’s a much-needed rest from the daily rush of school and homework. But for parents, it can either mean a great vacay to a fun spot or a week of trying to find something for the kids to do. If your spring break falls into the latter category, this is for you.

Unlike summer vacation, where you find a new rhythm for a few months, spring break is just one week so it interrupts the flow of school without the benefits of the longer summer break. Plus it comes at the cusp of seasons – not necessarily warm enough for playing outside all day, all week and not necessarily cold enough for winter activities like skiing and skating.

So, what are some ways to keep your kids busy?

1. Have a dance party

No matter what the weather is like outside, you can always crank up the music indoors and have a fun and fab dance party. Choose a playlist that appeals to your music taste and theirs, so that everyone has songs they adore. Want to make it even more fun? Invite a few of your kid’s friends over, lay out some snacks and have a blast.

2. Start working on the garden

It might not be warm enough to start planting, but it’s certainly warm enough to start planning. If you garden with your kids, spring break is a great time to start thinking about and planning your garden. Have the kids help by plotting this year’s garden on paper, making lists of supplies you need (compost, mulch, seeds, plants, etc). And if it is warm enough, then get out there and start prepping the garden for planting.

3. Have an art show

Do your kids love to draw, paint and create? Then plan a spring break art show. Give your kids all the supplies they need to make collages, paintings or sculptures and set them to work. At the end of the week, invite friends and family over to view their creations.

4. Scavenger hunt

Whether it’s raining, snowing or sunny, it’s always a good time for a scavenger hunt. Make a list of things for your kids to locate (a green leaf, something to shade you from the sun, etc) and set them to find them all. Have a few small prizes for when they finish to make it extra special.

Want to turn up the fun a little? “You can make it more hi-tech by letting the kids take photos of the items they scavenge,” says Kim Danger, mother of two and founder of Mommysavers.com. Then, they could even turn those photos into a fun collage art project.

You’re already watching what you eat, but how closely do you watch it? In order to really calculate your calorie intake you have to watch what you eat with a magnifying glass.

Stolen bites and tastes (such as handfuls of a friend’s popcorn at the movies or tasting the dough while baking cookies) can rack up a few hundred uncounted calories, which can put on pounds fast.

Eating while distracted can cause this mindless eating, too. When women who normally watch their portions had lunch in different situations, researchers found that they ate 15 percent more (72 additional calories) when they ate while listening to a detective story compared with when they ate alone and free of any distractions.

What’s the solution? Avoid eating when your mind’s elsewhere (while on the computer, for example), and eliminate unnecessary distractions (turn off the radio, or set aside the book).

Here are other ways to prevent mindless eating.

At the Office A coworker baked banana bread for your morning meeting. Take one slice, and set it aside to savor when you’re back at your desk for diet success. If you eat during the meeting, it would be easy to have a slice and a half–or more.

Giving Your Kids Lunch Don’t serve as much to start; you can always offer seconds. The minute they’re done, wrap up or toss what’s left.

According to the NY Daily News, the unforeseen move, which was announced today, finds Williams departing her daily radio show effective July 31 to pursue her newly launched syndicated show, ‘The Wendy Williams Show,’ full-time.

Williams, 45, has also been heard on WRKS and WQHT, where she often stirred controversy with her gossip items about celebrities. She has been suspended several times and always dismissed it as the cost of doing business.

“I really was blessed to have a broadcast home in New York on radio for the past seven years,” said Williams in a statement. “Making a difference in the lives of my fans made all the difference to me and I look forward to doing the same thing in my new role as a TV host.”

Wendy whose booming personality has made her a fixture – and occasionally the center of scandal – on urban radio for 20 years, will be missed!!!!

According to perezhilton.com, the producers of the most anticipated series of the fall orginally wanted Whitney Houston, to fill the role of a ” no-nonsense girls’ choir director from a rival school.” Houston turned it down and Eve stepped in.

Actresses Jill Scott and Jada Pinkett Smith are very different women, but in 2009, they have something extremely rare in common. They are both headlining their own television series.

Scott, the Grammy Award-winning R&B singer/songwriter, is starring in “The #1 Ladies Detective Agency, a series based on the best-selling books by novelist Alexander McCall Smith, debuting on HBO Sunday, March 29 at 8 p.m. Pinkett Smith stars in and executive produces the TNT medical drama “Time Heals,” now going into production.

In fact, Scott and Pinkett Smith are two of only three black women who have ever headed a major hour-long television drama. The only other actress was the late Teresa Graves, whose short-lived 1974 series, “Get Christie Love,” was the very first hour-long drama to star a black woman on TV. In 1968, Diahann Carroll’s “Julia” earned her the distinction of being the first black women to star in a television show, but on half-hour sitcom.

Certainly, black women have had major roles on TV before. “Law and Order” star S. Epatha Merkerson has been on the show since 1993 and is the cast’s longest-running regular character. Last year, she surpassed “Knots Landing’s” Michelle Lee as the actress appearing in the most episodes on one TV show. But for all her longevity, Merkerson rarely has a storyline based around her in the ensemble cast.

Certainly there have been many black sitcoms – from “Martin” to the “Family Matters” to “The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air” that have been successful – but all were based around a male star.

Shows centered around black women like “Girlfriends” “Living Single” and even “Soul Food,” a black family drama focused on three sisters that aired for five seasons on Showtime, were ensemble shows that weren’t dominated by any one character. Though the VH-1 reality hit “I Love New York” is the rare reality show focused on a black female character, its star, Tiffany Pollard, is better known for setting back images of black women on TV than creating more opportunities for them.

Of course, there is Oprah Winfrey and Tyra Banks, but as talk show hosts (and, in one’s case, a media empire), their success has apparently done little to convince television powers that be that scripted drama would work with a black woman in a lead role.

“Women of color, period, are usually the least serviced characters on shows,” says St. Petersburg Times TV critic Eric Deggans. “There haven’t been a lot of roles for them because there aren’t a lot of roles for people of color on television anyway…”

NeNe, Kim, Sheree, and Lisa, make room for one more! EW has learned exclusively that DeShawn Snow’s replacement on Bravo’s The Real Housewives of Atlanta is Kandi Burruss, a singer-songwriter from the platinum-selling ’90s R&B girl group Xscape!

Burruss is undeniably the most notable member from Xscape. Since the group parted ways in the late ’90s, she had a somewhat successful solo singing career (her biggest hit: “Don’t Think I’m Not”) but has seen ever greater successes with songwriting. Along with Cottle (who’s married to rap superstar T.I.), she wrote TLC’s 1999 smash hit “No Scrubs.” Burruss has also penned jams for Mariah Carey, Destiny’s Child, Boyz II Men, Alicia Keys, and Faith Evans. The singer-songwriter has a daughter, 6-year-old Riley, from a previous relationship, and a boyfriend.
