The creators of this eco-friendly cosmetics line (sold exclusively at Walmart), say that the “tech-savy” Generation Z (8-12 years old) girls care about the environment, “crave community” and connect with one another in their primary language – texting shortcuts, also called ”geo-speak.” Just look at the names of these two products: F2F (Face To Face) Moisture Tint SPF 15 ($4.99) which evens out skintone and KOC (KissOnCheeks) Cream Blush ($4.99) which goes on super-sheer, in fact the colors of the entire line is light on pigment.

We can all agree that the idea of makeup on a young girl or getting a child started on a skin care regimen so early in life is a touchy subject, but do you think it’s a subject that should be explored? The creators feel strongly that these super-sheer formulas do more than give a child a natural glow, they reinforce the idea of beauty coming from within while simultaneously giving the child the chance to learn early on another aspect of the grooming ritual all the while saving the planet one lip balm at a time.

Blunder #1: Lecturing

No one enjoys a one-sided conversation in which they’ve been relegated to the role of non-stop listener. For the mature adult patiently listening to some know-it-all bluster on and on without reprieve is next to impossible. For most teenagers, who characteristically have shorter attention spans, it is impossible. Polite teenagers will silently tune out while remaining bodily present. The less than polite will simply get up and leave. And who can blame them?

Before you launch into your next great speech, try asking open-ended questions that will require a thoughtful response. My rule of thumb is if I find myself speaking more than three sentences without interruption, then I’m probably talking too much.

Blunder #2: Offering Unwelcome Advice

When was the last time you asked a teenager (or anyone for that matter), “I have an opinion about that. Would you like to hear it?” When was the last time you waited to be asked for your thoughts before you offered them?

Even though the exact right advice might be on the tip of your tongue, exercise self-control. Wait to be asked for your opinion, or ask permission to offer it first. Teenagers’ biggest complaint is adults’ lack of respect for their personhood. Nothing shouts “I don’t respect you!” like clobbering someone over the head with your unsolicited opinion.

Forever 21 is a popular store chain whose major demographic of shoppers are females from the ages of teens to 20’s. So, you can understand why the chain is now under scrutiny for introducing their maternity clothing line. The line, launched at the end of June, features maternity tops and denim styles, leggings, knit and woven tops, cardigans, dresses and basics.

“The line will provide sophisticated, on-trend styles for moms-to-be at affordable prices, continuing Forever 21′s commitment to value, trend and freshness,” a Forever 21 news release said.

Critics are responding that it’s not just the fact that they will be providing maternity clothes that is causing the debate. The real issue seems to be the assertion that the company is purposely marketing to teen moms and the appearance that they are encouraging teen pregnancy. The company only has the maternity line in three states, Texas, California and Arizona. All of which are on the list of the top 15 states with the highest teen pregnancy rate.

Forever 21 Vice President released a statement saying that this all a coincidence.

“Forever 21 did not create, design or distribute Love 21 Maternity to target, or appeal specifically to pregnant teens. Any relationship between teen pregnancy rates and the locations of our stores is unintentional,” the statement said.

Believing that Forever 21 is purposely marketing or encouraging teenagers to become pregnant in order for them to have the hottest maternity clothes at their high school is absolutely ludicrous. Obviously, they are not setting out to purposely encourage teenage girls to become impregnated. They are not campaigning for more daycare centers in all high schools or advocating for more baby mama’s and baby daddy’s.  What they are doing is capitalizing on the teen pregnancy issue. They can deny it all they want but I can see right through their marketing strategy. This is something that you can blame them for.

There is a large ratio of teen moms and this equates to there being a need. Where there is a need there is money to be made. Their goal is to facilitate that need. Now whether those motives and plans of action are moral or not may vary from person to person. However, in no way does Forever 21 have a new mission to mold American teen girls to become fashionable teen moms. They are more concerned with zeroing in on a need and being the first one to attack it and make money from it. If it became more fashionable for men to wear skirts then they too would attack that need as well. (Similar to how H&M did when they released their male line of skirts a few months ago. I digress.)

Parents, bible thumpers, and gossipers alike should stop trying to find someone to blame for their children’s bad behavior, mistakes and hiccups in life. It is not the fault of the video game makers if your child shoots up a school. It is not the fault of rappers if your child is on Girls Gone Wild, and it is not the fault of Forever 21 if your teenage daughter becomes pregnant. The time that they spend trying to pass the blame they could be spending talking to their children, educating them about safe sex, finding out why they are so unhappy, or who is bullying them at school and how to stop it, etc. This is where their energy should be placed. Place that time, energy and interest back into the children first and foremost. Perhaps then there would not be such a unreasonable worry about a store brand trying to encourage their daughters to be the best dressed teen mom in their school. Via: CNN

Unsurprising news alert! A new study shows that listening to songs with sexual lyrics can lead to higher and more risky sexual behavior among teenagers. Says the Canadian Press,

High exposure to lyrics that describe degrading sex is associated with high levels of sexual behaviour in teens, a new study suggests.

The research, published Tuesday in the American Journal of Preventive Medicine, was conducted in three large urban high schools in the Pittsburgh area, and involved asking Grade 9 students about the number of hours a day they listen to music and their favourite musical artists.

“Music exposure is growing … there is now unprecedented access to music and it’s also becoming more direct, more explicit,” said co-author Dr. Brian Primack of the Center for Research on Health Care at the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine.

“Adolescents are exposed to six to eight hours of mass media messages per day, and since it is such an important exposure, we need to know if this is affecting health.”

He noted, for example, that data have shown that up to 25 per cent of American teenage girls have sexually transmitted diseases.

STDs are particularly problematic in poor communities, Primack said, and that was a reason for focusing on three urban high schools where about half the kids take part in a lunch program – indicating they fall below a certain income level.

“We divided the cohort into three … those who were exposed to the lowest amount (of music with degrading references), those who were exposed to sort of the medium amount, those who were exposed to the most,” he said.

“And those who were exposed to the most were more than twice as likely to have had sexual intercourse, and that’s even controlling for all of the other factors that we looked at that we thought might be related to uptake of sexual intercourse.”

According to a new study, teens who are smoking before the age of 17 may be putting themselves in danger of developing multiple sclerosis in the later years.

Researchers studied 87 patients with multiple sclerosis (MS) who were among more than 30,000 people who took part in the 2002 National Health Interview Survey.

The people were divided into three groups: nonsmokers, early smokers who started before age 17, and late smokers who started at 17 or later.

The people who started smoking before age 17 were 2.7 times more likely than nonsmokers to develop multiple sclerosis, the researchers say.

People who started smoking at 17 or later did not show an increased risk of developing multiple sclerosis compared to nonsmokers, according to the researchers.

About 32% of the MS patients were early smokers, compared to 19% of the people who didn’t develop the disease, the researchers say.

According to a recent medical study, teens whose mothers drank while pregnant may find the smell of alcohol more appealing than their peers do.

Researchers found that teenagers found the smell of alcohol more appealing if their mothers had drunk while they were in the womb.

This attraction could increase their chances of suffering a drink problem in later life, researchers believe.

The study, carried out in pregnant rats, showed that by the time offspring hit adolescence they responded more strongly to the smell of alcohol on others if they had been exposed to it before they were born.

Steven Youngentob, from the State University of New York, who led the study, said: “These results highlight an important relationship between fetal and adolescent experiences that appears essential to the progressive development of alcohol abuse.”

His team believe that being exposed to alcohol in the womb trains the brain to make the smell of a tipple more appealing.

This happens to all mammals, including humans, they believe, because it is evolutionary important for a child to like foods eaten by its parents.

By contrast, rats whose mothers were not given alcohol while pregnant were not as attracted to the smell.

The study, published in the journal Behavioural and Brain Functions, also found that the teenage years were when attraction to the aroma of alcohol appeared to heighten.

The researchers believe this is crucial, as adolescence is a key time in which early patterns of behaviour which can lead to alcohol addiction can begin.
