A female friend sent out the above picture in a mass email entitled “I think she has the perfect (rear end).”

The woman in the picture, if you didn’t know, is super model Naomi Campbell who I happen to think is absolutely beautiful. But perfect rear end?

Please.

Perfect would be somewhere between Naomi and, say, Bria Myles. Perfect would be a taller Beyonce or a slimmer Alicia Keys. Perfect would be Serena Williams if she’d been, say, a distance runner and not a tennis player. Perfect would be useless video vixen Solei or adult film star Roxy Reynolds (and don’t expect a link on that one).

But this, I think, represents the fundamental disconnect between men and women. What women find attractive in themselves and each other is often not what men find attractive at all.

Very recent studies have found that seeing the body of a curvy, hippy woman has the same effect on a man as taking drugs.

This, of course, would seemingly put Black women in the awkward position of being almost effortlessly able to induce a natural high, while simultaneously forcing them to continue in their psychological warfare against the rail thin, pancake-flat on both sides, top fashion models that America ridiculously endorses as the feminine ideal.

One would expect that women—particularly Black women—would know better than this. Most fashion designers are gay males. The only type of women these guys could even feel remotely attracted towards would be the ones that have the bodies of young boys.

Still, even when women go lesbian they seem to pick unattractive partners. Anybody seen Sex and the City star Cynthia Nixon’s main squeeze?

Ugh.

Then there’s all this hate against genuine cuties with real talent like Nicki Minaj!

I’ve even heard some disparaging things (from women, of course) against a lady who physically, academically and intellectually is, by any reasonable standard, completely above reproach—Michelle Obama!

All this leads me to suggest that, ladies: we men will accept your opinions on whether or not another woman has class.

We’ll listen to you prattle on and on about whether or not her purse is wack or her shoes are corny or her dress is cheap.

But when it comes to judging another woman physically, I’d advise ya’ll to leave that up to the experts.

Naomi, it’s safe to come out now…The police are no longer interested in speaking with the supermodel!! According to the NY Times, the case is closed and no charges will be filed.

Naomi hit her driver as he drove through Midtown about 3 p.m. Tuesday and then ran away after the driver pulled over, according to the account the police gave shortly afterward. The driver had a small bruise under his eye from hitting the steering wheel after she struck him.

Ms. Sims is sometimes referred to as the first black supermodel.

“Naomi was the first,” the designer Halston told The New York Times in 1974. “She was the great ambassador for all black people. She broke down all the social barriers.”

Ms. Sims often said childhood insecurities and a painful upbringing — living in foster homes, towering over her classmates and living in a largely poor white neighborhood in Pittsburgh — had inspired her to strive to become “somebody really important” at a time when cultural perceptions of black Americans were being challenged by the civil rights movement and a renewed stress on racial pride.

When Ms. Sims arrived in New York on a scholarship to attend the Fashion Institute of Technology in 1966, there was very little interest in fashion for black models and only a handful who had been successful, like Dorothea Towles Church, who starred in the couture shows in 1950s Paris, and Donyale Luna, who was named Vogue’s model of the year in 1966.

In need of money, Ms. Sims, with her heart-shaped face and long limbs, was encouraged by classmates and counselors to give it a try. But every agency she approached turned her down, some telling her that her skin was too dark.

Undeterred, Ms. Sims decided to approach photographers herself. Gosta Peterson, a photographer for The Times, agreed to photograph her for the cover of its August 1967 fashion supplement, then called Fashions of The Times.

The agencies were still not interested, so Ms. Sims, showing a dash of enterprise that would later define her career, told Wilhelmina Cooper, a former model who was starting her own agency, that she would send out copies of the magazine to advertising agencies with Ms. Cooper’s number attached. Ms. Cooper could have a commission if anyone called back.

Within a year, Ms. Sims was earning $1,000 a week and had been hired for a national television campaign for AT&T, which showed her and two other models — one white and one Asian — wearing fashions by Bill Blass.

“It helped me more than anything else because it showed my face,” Ms. Sims told Ladies’ Home Journal the following year, when she appeared on its cover, the first time a black model was featured so prominently in a mainstream women’s publication. “After it was aired, people wanted to find out about me and use me.”

Here’s young model Chanel Iman at last night’s “Matthew Williamson for H&M” event in New York City. She wore a braided headband paired with a flirty little dress that quite resembles a tshirt.

Everyone’s giving her a bunch of flack because it looks like she’s just wearing a shirt without pants, but I personally think it’s cute. She’s 20; give her a break. Besides, if I had legs that long, y’all would be lucky if I wore clothes at all.

Has Liya Kebede ever looked bad in ANYthing? The supermodel (and one of this month’s Vogue cover models) showed up to the 3rd Annual Cookie Magazine Smart Cookie Awards looking absolutely adorable in a black, knee-length fringed number with matching bag and shoes.

Curiously, her shoes look a lot like the ones Deborah Roberts wore to the same event, but this time, they go with her outfit.

In anticipation of her television debut on MTV’s House of Style this weekend, we snagged Chanel Iman for a few minutes to chat about how she landed the coveted role of show correspondent (first peek at her in the show, left), her recent coup on the runway at Balenciaga, and about how she might have already landed a date to this year’s Costume Institute Gala. It also sounds like she has a career switch in mind – but Chanel will tell you all about it herself.

How did your role on House of Style come about?

Well basically, they called my agency, I went in to meet with them, I did an audition with all the rest of the girls, and they called – I was waiting for the phone call, I was hoping I got it – but I was waiting for about three months. And when I got back from Paris – I was in Paris for ready-to-wear and did the whole fashion tour for Fashion Week – they told me I got it. I was really excited because it’s just another way for me to express myself!

Tell me a little bit about your upcoming Gossip Girl appearance.

It’s just experience – it was just for me to get an idea of what it would be like to be on set, to really see what happens since I’ve never been on a set before.

Are you looking for more TV appearances in the future then?

Yeah. I’m kind of slowing down on the modeling right now and I’m branching out to other experiences and interests that I have. [Ed. note: She told Teen Vogue: "House of Style is definitely just the start. I want to do television, film, music and designing. I want to do it all!"]

Supermodel Liya Kebede is not only to be the first model to pose as the exclusive face of J. Crew (that is, she’s agreed to pose for the entire catalog), the brand has also agreed to pick up her children’s clothing line, Lemlem.

Lemlem, which means “to bloom,” was launched by Kebede in 2007 and every piece is handmade in her native Ethiopia with natural cotton. The line will be available at J.Crew starting in April.
