But did you know just how hazardous high heels can be?

The am NewYork, published an article today where a prominent Manhattan podiatrist discusses the health and safety implications of always wearing high heels. Dr Jacqueline Sutera, points out that women account for around 65% of podiatry patients, and the stats will rise, if nothing gives in our obsession with the stiletto.

While we all feel fantastic when we slip on a sexy heel, and they make us feel slimmer, hotter and make all our clothes look better, is it really worth torn ligaments detaching bone fragments, resulting in, not just immense pain, but 6 weeks of rocking a moon boot?. I mean, how sexy are you going to look then, when you new accessory is so clumpy, your colleagues can hear you coming from the other side of the building? How are you ever going to be able to impress that guy at the bar, when, as you try to move in closer to him and you cross your legs, (while trying to look seductive), you kick him in the shins with your gigantic, plaster covered limb?

Even if you are not a strictly ‘stilettos only’ devotee, and dismiss the dangers to your health high heels pose, as a ‘freak accident, no chance it will happen to me’, what about the dangers of missing a step and stacking in front of everybody? How will you deal with the sheer embarrassment of flashing your panties to the world, and then having to hobble away, face the color of a Louboutin sole, acting like nothing happened? And as we all know, you don’t have to be a high heel novice to go a over t. You all remember Sarah Jessica Parker’s character, Carrie Bradshaw in the fashion show?. And she was the girl who took the dog for a walk in stilettos!

If that doesn’t convince you to at least go a few days a week heel-free, let’s talk about the sheer practicality factor. Walking down stairs, over uneven ground, running for the bus or subway, simply walking after a few drinks, all become near impossible in stilettos. Do you really want to be that girl who looks so uncomfortable in her shoes, she looks like a toddler taking her first steps as she walks, really slowly, arms outstretched for balance, carefully navigating her next step?

But if you still need some extra convincing about the benefits of flat shoes, just think of the money you will be saving. Imagine being able to buy three or maybe four pairs of cute flats, instead of splurging on just the one pair of shoes who seem hell bent on killing you slowly!

Constant pressure on the feet can result in the thickening of tissue around the nerves in toes and cause pain, stinging and numbness in the toes. The taller the heel is the greater the risk of injury.

Beyonce popping and bouncing across stage in six-inch heels that look more like weapons is enough to make any woman believe she can survive a few nights on the town in stilettos. Go for a wedge or platform style. The wedge style distributes your weight evenly across a greater surface putting less pressure on the balls of your feet. The new shoes are being compared to skyscrapers because of their towering heels. But the price also may have something to do with it. In a nation, where the average salary is euro450 ($575) a month, the hand-crafted sandals are selling for up to euro1,200 ($1,525).

But the designer believes his shoes are worth the high price.

“Heels have an advantage because (many women) don’t have long legs,” said Mr Albu. “They reposition the waist.”

Mr Albu, a former architect, blends math, architecture and art in his creations. He uses French leather and encrusts it with jewels, feathers and mirrors.

Okay, I know that “it’s a recession!” is the new catchphrase these days, but sometimes, it really does apply to certain situations. Like the one involving this new natural python Christian Louboutin “Dillian” pump, which is over two thousand effing dollars.

1. It’s a shoe.
2. An embellished shoe. Which means its wearability will be MAYBE a year and a half, if you really want to push it, before they’re so out of style, you have to save them for your grandkids to rock as vintage.
3. It really is a fly shoe, but how many times can you really wear it?
4. It’s a recession, dammit.

Sorry, but come on. If I had a cool billion chilling in my bank account, I probably still wouldn’t buy them, because Bernie Madoff taught me that money can go away much more quickly than any of us ever thought it could.

Then again, on a shopping high, if I had it, I probably WOULD buy them, and then I’d hate myself for it like 3 weeks later. But what a nice 3 weeks it would be.

Follow these simple steps to strengthen and elongate the calves, ankles and toes while adding confidence and some much needed balance to take on your 4+inch high friends.

Take off your heels. They deserve a rest.

• Place the feet together and lift both arms parallel to the ground, palms facing down
• Find one point to gaze at and lift up onto the balls of the feet

Find out which shoe will send you to the hospital.
• Continue to reach the heels away from the ground, creating lift in the arches. Think platforms, not kitten heels….keep lifting up!
• Keep the gaze on one point, heels lifted, and begin to bend the knees, drop the tailbone
• Keep the belly gently pulling to the spine as the body descends until the bottom lands lightly on the heels
• Take five breaths without placing the heels on the ground and make a slow return back to standing
• Place heels back down

Put your heels back on. Go be fierce.
