Inside drawers and closets

* Tie taper candles, pens or pencils together with a pretty ribbon or fat, brightly colored rubber band.

* Put miscellaneous keys, matches and rubber bands in shallow baskets, small bowls, boxes or organizing trays (I like these bamboo inserts from The Container Store).

* Buy items like Q-Tips, cotton balls, tampons on sale, discard their packaging and store them in pretty and generous sized jars. I like these from IKEA because the lids come off easily or use the jars from a food (like spaghetti sauce) that you use frequently.

* Chalkboard, whiteboard or magnetic boards inside a cabinet that you open frequently can hold to do lists, dry cleaning slips, printed tickets.

If you’re like most of us who live in an apartment and want the opportunity to enjoy homegrown produce, you know how difficult that can be. Container gardening is an answer for those who have limited areas to grow plants. It’s perfect for condo’s and patios but also is convenient for those with limited mobility. Growing vegetables in a container can offer you the opportunity to learn about gardening while being able to enjoy homegrown produce. What could be better than picking red, ripe tomatoes that you’ve personally tended?

Choose Your Container

Almost anything can be used for container gardening but some perform better than others. You can grow lettuce in shallow baking pans, tomatoes in bushel baskets or large pots. Glazed ceramic pots are nice but not necessary. Just be careful that you don’t choose a container that previously held toxic substances.

Tip: Make sure it will hold a fully grown plant.

The lazy girl’s guide to spring cleaning.

Where Do I put It?

In general, plan for five hours of sunlight. Some need more, some less but it’s a good place to start. The beauty of container gardening is that you can place it anywhere and you can move it if you need to.

Tip: Heavier containers placed on rolling trollies provide the most convenience in case of bad weather.

The Soil

Did you know there are two types of soil available for container gardening? Garden centers sell a soil-less mix especially for small space gardening. It holds moisture and nutrients better than natural soils and also is weed and bacteria free. Soils from your yard isn’t usually used because it’s too heavy.

We’ve listed 9 of our favorite ways, see if you have one to add to the list!

1. Sort Mail & Bills: Using the individual pockets as a place to stash away mail, bills, letters or even stationary and office supplies is a great way to keep things organized while still in reach and out of pesky boxes and other traditional office storage.

2. Under Your Bed: Some closets are so small you’re lucky if you can get 1 shoe inside, let alone 20 pairs. Try attaching a shoe organizer flat to a piece of board that’s been outfitted with wheels. Slide your shoes in like normal and then simply roll out the bag whenever you need to add or subtract to the system. Out of sight and not taking up any closet space!

3. Bathroom Accessories: Even the most low maintenance person still have a few bathroom products to keep track of. Sprays, waxes, lotions and potions are all great in these slender pockets. They can also be a great place to keep rubber bands, bobby pins or even large pins or broaches if you have them.

4. Outdoor Planter: Try poking a few holes in the bottom of each compartment and packing them full of dirt and small plants of your choice. It’s a great way to create a living wall without paying the $100+ price tag of living wall systems.

If you're stuck on how to start decorating a bedroom, here are some simple tips to help the design process along.

1) Pile on the pillows, and don’t shy away from mixing patterns. Combine large prints with small ones, florals with geometrics.

2) Hanging a graphic quilt is an easy solution to the “big blank wall” issue. Complementary bed linens pull the decor together.

4) Nightstands and adjustable lamps affixed to walls will save space in a small room.

A lot of you guys have been asking various forms of the same question: my dude seems to be putting the brakes on, and I don’t understand what it means. Well, it can mean a few different things…

Listen, I’m not a mind-reader. So I can’t tell you exactly why he says he “needs a little space,” or “wants to take things a little more slowly,” or “needs some time to think about things” or any of the other vague, overly gentle and therefore more heartbreaking ways he has of saying this.

But I can tell you that it doesn’t mean it’s the end. I’ve told every single girlfriend I’ve ever had that I needed space. Obviously I didn’t end up marrying every single girlfriend I had (I only married Blossoms, whom I told several times that I needed space). But what it means is that there is something about being in a relationship that has always freaked me out. I can feel the freak-out once in a while even now, when I’m married, it’s just that it doesn’t bother me much any more because I know better.

But I can make several broad characterizations about what it means when guys say this:

1) He’s scared. This I can say for certain. Whether he’s scared because he’s too much in love and is losing himself, of because he’s afraid he’s going to end up married to someone he doesn’t want to be married to, or because, like me, relationships can just plain scare him, I can’t say for certain.

6 things you’re husband is not telling you.

2) Yes, he may want to break up. The hard truth is that this is what it seems: a break-up with training wheels.

3) He wants to make sure he’s in control. This is a really selfish thing, and something I’m guilty of. But sometimes men just want to make sure that they are in control of a relationship because not being in control is a feeling that makes them very uncomfortable. It’s the same reason you put the brakes on when you’re driving or skiing or riding a bike downhill: control.
