FACT: Poverty Rate For Single Mothers Climbs As Jobs & Safety Net Fades

If you’re a single mother, you should really be worried! The poverty data released this week from the U.S. Census is a harsh reminder of what the economic toll for single mothers. Two-thirds (66 percent) of low-income African American children live in single-mother households.

According to the Huffington Post, In September the Economic Policy Institute released a study examining the causes of rising poverty among black and Latino families, two groups in which the overall poverty rate is high, huge numbers of single mothers are very poor, and marriage rates are falling faster than they are in the general population.

Black and Latina women say they believe children need to grow up with a father at higher rates than non-Hispanic white women do, according to the study. But minority men and women also indicate stronger beliefs that a married man should be able to economically provide for a family.

This should be a wake-up call for all the men out there who are not in their children’s life!

Are Single Mothers Becoming The Norm?

Nia Long and Lauryn Hill recently announced to the world they were pregnant and with both ladies being unmarried, it’s caused a couple commentators to turn up their noses and give them the “side-eye”. It seems as though being a single mother has become the norm, especially in the black community and even more prominent in the black celebrity community. I came across an article on Essence.com written by Demetria Lucas that touched on this very subject and got me thinking: why has having a baby before marriage become so common in our community and even more so, why has this become a bad thing?

Like Demetria wrote in her article, before Lauryn Hill there was Erykah Badu who had a child by boyfriend Jay Electronica and received so much backlash that she wrote an open letter defending her decisions. What’s the reason for such outrage towards “baby mamas” in our community and not women like Kourtney Kardashian who is also unmarried with a child?

One theory is that by judging other African American women’s “bad” decisions, we create a sense of them vs. us which somehow shows the world that women who have children after marriage are better than those who have children before marriage since they have chosen to have children “the right way”.

According to the article, 72% of African American children were born to single mothers as of 2010 and that percentage is constantly rising. Of course having a happy, stable marriage and family life is ideal, however, if women are happily raising their children as single mothers, then why are people so judgmental?

Nia Long was recently interviewed by actress Ali Landry (best known for her role as the “Doritos” girl, and as Rita on “Eve”) for “Spotlight to Nightlight.” She talked about her son Massai and about how it feels to be a single parent. Though her ex-fiance and father of her son is still very instrumental in his upbringing, the two haven’t been a couple for several years. Long wants to share with every single lady out there with a baby, “Don’t feel guilty about being a single mother.”

What Happened to The “Good Mate”?

After being bombarded with Facebook statuses that gave a shout out to all the single moms on a day that’s reserved for dads, I got fed up. Every single one of my friends who mentioned Father’s Day gave a huge middle finger to the dads who weren’t man enough to stick around.

Where ARE the dads? Seriously.

I know too many single moms. I only know two dads (one still has a baby on the way). Why is that?

For the women: I know sometimes things happen that are out of your control and some women get dropped without any inkling something was wrong. Other women simply sleep with the wrong men. They knew he wasn’t the right one, wouldn’t do right, couldn’t do right, but they slept with him anyway and nine months later, he’s a distant memory.

Talk about double standards.

There are folks who are single, yearning to be coupled up yet scoff at the idea of dating a perfect candidate just because he or she has kids. When compared to women, men (well the ones who care) are adamantly opposed to women with kids. The baby mama can be beautiful, smart, accomplished, body banging like a benzy but once he finds out she’s given the gift of life all their hopes gets flushed down the drain.

I love my boys, gods know I do but I wanna kill ‘em dead when they get to talking -ish about how regardless of how good the woman is, if she has a child he’s gone.

One friend in particular takes the cake.

He is handsome, smart, talented and single. He wants to be in a relationship but can’t seem to stop meeting great prospects…with kids.

“Manny, how do you know God isn’t sending you a woman who has a child on purpose?”

“I know God very well, he knows what I want. SG, do you know what happens when men date a woman with kids. Six months into she’s thinking of ways to get us to marry her so her bastard child can have a daddy. She tells you to meet her somewhere to hang out. You get there and this trick is standing in front of her kids school with the spawn.”

“You really think women are that desperate?”…
