Oprah called into the Sirius/XM Satellite Radio show of her BFF Gayle King to dish about her new BFF Jay-Z. The daytime talk show is so smitten with Jay that she recently loaned Jay and Beyonce her yacht.

“Jay-Z is my new best friend!” she said, recalling her two-hour interview with him for her magazine, O.

She said she’s still not a huge fan of his music, but was bowled over by his warm personality – and scent.

“He was so charming and delightful – and he smelled so good,” she says. “It’s the kind of thing where you hug a guy and the scent is sort of buried in them,” she explains. “When we went to the second location I could still smell him on me it was like, ‘oh my, this is wonderful!’”

Oprah can get that smell in a bottle as Jay will launch his X Rocawear fragrance next month in celebration of the label’s 10th anniversary.

Queen Latifah is getting ready to jump into the fragrance business.  The actress/rapper is teaming up with Parlux Fragrance to develop her own perfume schedule for release in the fall of 2009.

When asked why she’s getting into the fragrance business, Latifah said:

“Beauty really does start on the inside. It’s like a state of mind, a state of love, if you will. So I see a fragrance as just a natural expression of this state of love: Scent expresses a woman’s confidence and sensuality, it’s how she embraces her body, her mind and her strength.”

Latifah will also appear in the print ads for her perfume.

You can, if she actually wears her own scent. That’s right, the Oscar-winning actress has joined Celine Dion and others in the quest for further global takeover: she created a perfume.

Halle Berry fans, take note: The Oscar winner’s first fragrance, a woody oriental she collaborated on with Coty, hits shelves next week. A nose in her own right (the starlet reportedly delights in mixing and layering scents to create her own signature eau de parfum), Berry’s Halle by Halle Berry features mimosa and fig essences that the press materials explain are intended to evoke “the spirit of a woman who is effortlessly sexy, stylish, and elegant.”

When you’re in love, everything seems different – and that includes your sense of smell. Women who are deeply in love struggle to recognise the body odour of male friends, but their ability to distinguish their partner’s smell is unaffected.

Body odours are known to play a role in human sexual attraction. But how does falling in love affect our perception and processing of these smells?

To find out, Johan Lundström and Marilyn Jones-Gotman of McGill University in Montreal, Canada, asked a group of 20 young women with boyfriends to fill in a Passionate Love Scale questionnaire (pdf format) to determine just how much in love they were. Meanwhile, the women’s partners and male and female friends slept for a seven nights in a cotton T-shirt with pads sewn into the underarms to soak up their sweat.

In a series of trials, each woman was asked to pick out their lover’s or a friend’s T-shirt from three garments, two of which had been worn by strangers. The women’s scores on the Passionate Love Scale made no difference to their ability to recognise a lover’s shirt, or that worn by a female friend. But those who were more deeply in love were less good at distinguishing a male friend’s odour from those of strangers.

Can you pick your mate’s scent out of a group of dudes?

According to a recent Huffington Post article, having a dog might be helpful when it comes to choosing the right mate.

Because they have millions more smell receptors and can’t speak, the way your dog reacts to a new partner might be a good indicator of a part of your significant other’s personality that you have yet to see. The article suggests gaging the dog’s reaction to your new mate – for instance, if you have a friendly dog that doesn’t seem to like your new partner very much, chances are they might not be that great for you, either.
