As sweet as pet names can be, we all feel a little nauseous when we overhear other people taking it past a certain level.  The hard part is to figure out where the cut-off line is.  I knew that this was something that I wanted opinions on after I heard someone on the subway say, “Don’t worry, Sugarplum, of course I will hold the door for you!”

I personally think that pet names are acceptable.  They can definitely be cute and add a lot to relationships.  However, I think that there is a limit. Pet names should be personal and should not be thrown around constantly in public. Keep them meaningful and romantic, the worst would be to overuse a cute nickname!

The more personal that pet names are, the better.  Of course, the guy could have been calling her Sugarplum because she was the Sugarplum Fairy in her 4th grade play. Yet, because he was using this odd nickname in public, I had no way of knowing that and couldn’t help but roll my eyes at the thought of it.

Here are some common pet names:

Baby/babe: I think this one is always sweet no matter what.  It might seem overused or an easy way out, but it definitely still gives me butterflies.

Sexy: This one can be flattering, but should only be used at certain times during certain moments.

Darling: This isn’t something that I hear people use often, but I think it has a very endearing tone to it.

Love: Like darling, this makes me melt. Call me a romantic, but the phrase “Hey Love” makes me smile no matter what.

Favorite:  This is my fav.

Although pet names can be fun, be careful about too many people hearing them! They can become awful nicknames from people that you don’t want calling you something like “muffin.”

The male dominated media loves to promote the image of  irrational, emotional, drama queens who are at constant odds with each other. Reality television shows like The Real House Wives of New York, Atlanta and New Jersey keep us inundated with the “cat-fights” and foolishness of these so-called ’real’ women, who thrive on negative energy and attention. Yet no one ever talks about ‘Divos’ the drama kings of this world who equally have a flare for the dramatic. I dated a man who loved to argue; he would say anything to get a rise out of me. I should have known that something was up when he said “if I wanted to, I could get with your sister.” When I looked at him like he was crazy, then he tried to shrug it off, as a ‘just a joke.’  

It is not as socially accepted for men to behave in such a way, like Jay-Z said “males shouldn’t be jealous that’s a female trait,” which I completely disagree with because there are plenty of men who are just as guilty of bringing on the drama. Here are a couple of tips to let you know if your new guy is a Divo:

1. Every time you talk to him he has an elaborate story: Who knows why he does this or maybe his mom never gave him enough attention so he has to have your undivided attention– always. These stories will get grander and grander over time but dealing with his fantasy life can be a huge task, so just be ready to put in the work.

2. He tries to pull you in on act: He needs this fix so bad that he decides to pick a fight with you. He will say anything to push your buttons. Or he may pair himself up with a drama queen, when I was in college, there was this guy who seemed really laid back and nice. Although, his alter-ego was worse than Mel Gibson, he would purposely talk to other girls on campus so that his girlfriend would want to fight him, while he just sat back and laughed under his breath as she created a huge scene on the yard.  Who knows, maybe it was his time of the month so he needed to transfer that negative energy to her.  That’s an extreme case but if this happens on a smaller level even once it will happen again.

When it comes to matters of the heart, there are always disputes on a number of things that can’t or shouldn’t be done, depending on who you’re speaking to. Most people, especially when you’re young, tend to take the advice of a close friend or family member who may have experienced some type of love or romance. Most times, we, as humans, are infatuated with this new person we’re with and as most know, initially, we’re at the impression stage, you know, show them ALL your great qualities while downplaying ‘our real selves’. That’s not to say that you’re a bad or negative person, but we all have some qualities and characteristics that might not ‘sit well’ with our current love interest or with people in general! Get rid of the clutter. The folks over at Livesteez.com have brought up a really good question: Are Black Men Apprehensive About Toys in the Bedroom?

The reality is that most of men’s apprehension can stem from feelings of inadequacy in the bedroom. I’ve heard men say that they sometimes feel threatened by a vibrator, for example, as if the toy could potentially replace them as a lover. The truth of the matter is that if sex toys could replace human beings then we wouldn’t have relationships at all. With today’s technology people can get pregnant without engaging in physical intercourse and women are more often the breadwinners and are fully capable of supporting themselves in the world — the need to have a partner is not this practical, it’s emotional and physical.

My word out to all the men who may stumble across this article is to relax and know that your woman could never replace you with a piece of plastic and a motor. If your partner would like to introduce toys into your sex life it’s probably because she wants to share her excitement and pleasure with you. Remember, the most important thing is to listen to your partner and communicate with them so you are giving them everything they want and could ever imagine.

Hey guys, think you know everything there is to know about having sex with women? That erotic encyclopedia you carry around in your head may contain a lot of basic errors and omissions about women’s sexuality — errors that can lead to sex mistakes.

That’s because — after learning the facts of life — most of us are left to figure out sex for ourselves. Guys tend to take a lot of cues from adult movies, and we all know how true-to-life those are. Experience may help, but many women can be shy when talking about what they like.

To help us with some sex tips, WebMD asked two acclaimed sex educators, Tristan Taormino and Lou Paget, to tell us what they think are the most common sex mistakes men make with women.

Taormino is a prolific author, lecturer, and video producer. Her latest project is the Expert Guide educational video series from Vivid Ed.

Paget is author of The Great Lover Playbook and other sex manuals, and she gives seminars nationwide.

Sex Mistake No.1: You Know What She Wants

Men often make assumptions about what a woman wants based upon what they’ve done with other women. But women aren’t all the same.

“You develop a repertoire as you mature sexually, but you should never assume that what worked for the last person is going to work for this person,” Taormino says.

That applies not only to sexual predilections, but also to relationships, she says. “There are women who can have no-strings-attached sex, and women who can get attached very easily, and then everyone in between.”

Sex Mistake No. 2: You Have All She Needs

Some women can’t have an orgasm with less than 3,000 rpm. No human tongue or fingers can generate that kind of vibration. But men typically think something is wrong if a woman needs a vibrator.

“If the only way that a woman can achieve orgasm is with a vibrator, she’s not broken,” Taormino says.

Think of a vibrator as your assistant, not your substitute. Many couples use vibrators together. “While you’re doing one thing, or two things, the vibrator can be doing something else,” Taormino says.

Sex Mistake No. 3: Sex Feels the Same for Men and Women

Paget says there tends to be a “huge disconnect” between men and women in the ways that sex feels good.

“When a man has intercourse with a woman, and his penis goes into her body, that sensation is so off the charts for most men, they cannot imagine that it isn’t feeling the same way for her,” Paget says. “It couldn’t be further from the truth.”

The inside of the vagina is probably less sensitive than the outer parts for most women. Also, deep thrusting may not feel so nice on the receiving end. If the penis is too long, “it feels like you’re getting punched in the stomach,” Paget says. “It makes you feel nauseous.”
