Let’s face it, most of us are barely getting by on what we bring home at the end of the week. For those of us who are fortunate enough to still have a job, the paycheck is just not cutting it and some of us need to find extra work to make ends meet.

Here are some tips on how to find part-time work even if you’re still employed:

Before you start searching for a part-time job, there are a few things to consider, especially if you already have a job and you’ll be layering part-time work on top of that.

1. If you have a full-time job, try to find something that is compatible with your full-time job. So, if you have a job that requires you to be functioning early in the morning hours, bartending into the wee hours would probably not be a wise choice. Also try to find work that doesn’t create conflicts of interests with your main job — so if you’re a patent reviewer for the federal government, I wouldn’t recommend consulting for inventors coming before the U.S. Patent Office.

2. Can you find a position that will take you in a direction you want to go? Say you were laid off from a position as an accountant and you still want to work in that field. Take a look at growing fields — like healthcare and clean energy and see if any firms in those sectors are looking for accounting help.

3. Can you find a job that has some synergies with your current work? For example, if you work in a vet’s office by day, you’re obviously knowledgeable and comfortable around animals. Why not start a side business doing pet-sitting or training?

Since our country’s economic tsunami began about 3 years ago, families from coast to coast have literally been ripped to shreds. From the suffering of job loss to enduring virtual homelessness, relationships have been squeezed, stretched and twisted beyond recognition. The lack of additional resources, if any at all, have caused many to now publicly display their abundance of personal inadequacy. Without their bells and whistles attached, people have become unrecognizable to their family, friends and shockingly even themselves.

We have witnessed brothers and sisters turn on one another, children rebel against parents who are struggling and striving to just keep a roof over their head, much less a Gucci on their arm and husbands and wives ripped apart over financial failures. These observations have caused me to personally wonder whether the recession is really the cause for ruining these relationships or are people just being who they always were? Was their much substance to these bonds in the first place?

Foundations made of sand . . . the only explanation I have come up with thus far. People who allowed money to make them . . . instead of simply making money work for them. Marriages that are founded on selective amnesia which conveniently forget the vow “for richer or poorer.” Parents who buy love instead of giving and receiving love freely. In my eyes, this is what our society has come to embrace in our chase for money and false assumption that both more and bigger are always better. Could it be that the only part the recession has played in this entire ordeal is exposing us for what we have in fact allowed ourselves to become?

With fall rapidly approaching, here are some tips on how to get the most out of your clothing budget by building a “recession-proof” wardrobe from the budget fashionista:

1. Develop a Signature Piece. This is the piece you’re going to be known for—sort of like your calling card. It could be fabulous shoes, earrings, blazer, dresses, etc. Focus your shopping dollars on these pieces. My signature piece is crazy necklaces, which I find at thrift stores and stores like Forever 21.

2. Use the Cost per Wear When Shopping. Frequent TBF readers know this is something I’ve been preaching for years. Value is the key when building a great closet and The Budget Fashionista’s cost per wear formula can help you get the most bang for your buck. The cost per wear is the price of an item/divided by the number of times you think you’ll wear it. So if an item costs $100, and you wear it ten times, the cost per wear is $10. The more you wear an item, the cheaper it becomes. This tip is especially important as it forces you to focus on the utility of an item, ie the usefulness of an item to you, rather than just the price. Paying $5 for something you never where is $5 wasted.

In a groundbreaking report released Monday by a leading economic research group, social scientists turned a spotlight on the financial challenges facing an often overlooked group of women, many of whom could not take an unpaid sick day or repair a major appliance without going into debt.

Among the most startling revelations in the wealth data is that while single white women in the prime of their working years (ages 36 to 49) have a median wealth of $42,600, the median wealth for single black women is only $5.

“The popular image is [black women] spend too much, which is the reason they are running up credit card and consumer debt, but the cost of living has risen faster than income, and they need to go into debt for basic daily necessities,” said Meizhu Lui, director of the Closing the Gap Initiative. “It’s compounded because unemployment is twice as high in the black community than it is in the white.”

For all working-age black women 18 to 64, the financial picture is bleak. Their median household wealth is only $100.

“That means half of [black women] have a net worth of more than $100 and half have a net worth of less than $100,” Ms. Lui said. “So that gives you an idea of how far in debt some women of color are.”

(Wealth, or net worth, measures the total of one’s assets — cash in the bank, stocks, bonds and real estate; minus debts — home mortgages, auto loans, credit cards and student loans.)

“There are excuses and circumstances that have evolved in society, which put black women where they are,” said Esther Bush, executive director of the Urban League of Greater Pittsburgh. The recession has hit single mothers especially hard.

In Pittsburgh and across the country, the financial burdens of single parenthood fall mostly on women, but black women are more likely to endure the work and responsibility of raising children on their own. They are more likely to be the backbone of their families and communities, with greater responsibilities to support struggling friends and families. READ MORE HERE!

1. Bring the theater to you- If you have access to a patio or outdoor space, all you need is a projector and you have yourself a foolproof date. Pop your own popcorn, lay out a blanket, and just wait for the sun to set. Although you may have to wait until the weather warms up a bit for this one, what could be more romantic than viewing your favorite film together out in the fresh air?

2. Fondue for two - Don’t be fooled by the fancy name– making fondue is a cinch. Start the evening snacking on baguettes dipped in melted cheese and end it by dipping fresh fruit into melted chocolate. You are sure to impress your date with your creativity. Here is a great recipe to get you started.

3. Go to an outdoor concert – If the weather is nice out, take advantage of the many free outdoor concerts in your city. Pack up a blanket and some snacks to enjoy while rocking to the beat. Visit MetroMix.com to view the upcoming concerts in your area.

Studies show that unemployment has reached a 25 year high, and with so many people unemployed or under-employed, we are asking should women start to pay for dates? If we look at dating traditionally, then it would be a form of courtship. That means that single people are dating to eventually find the one to marry and that requires a partnership. Partnerships are what we are working on down the road by dating now, so we are all trying to put our best foot forward–right?

The Thought That Should Count

Men that do not have jobs can not afford to date and that is because society has an expectation that they will pay. However, women that do not have jobs can afford to date because it is not an expectation that we pay but now that the economy has gotten so ruff we should start. He can not always bare all of the burden of paying for the dating/entertaining so here are the guideline for when you should make sure that you have your purse handy:

1) 3:1 ratio: After he has paid three times you pay once. And you pay for the whole date like he did, that goes for everything including the tip.

2) When you are visiting his home: This is old school but if your guy says that he will be cooking dinner at his house then you bring something. The dessert, a bottle of wine or the new Jay-Z CD, never show up empty handed–not a good look!

3) His birthday or promotion at his job: This may sound obvious, but if you ask him what he wants for his birthday, and he says dinner then you should pay for it. He is just a passenger, you are the driver it’s your gift.

These are tough times all over. We all have cut back on things we enjoy doing, but it doesn’t mean you have to give up working out. Here are three exercises you can do at home:
1. Cardio Push-up (works the legs, butt, shoulders, back, and core)
Squat with your arms bent at waist-level. Shoot your hands above your head like you’re shooting a basketball. Bring your hands to the floor and kick back your feet so you’re in a push-up position, then do a push-up. Jump your feet back to your hands, and spring up into the next jump. Repeat 10 times.

Get your body ready for fall

2. Waist Whittler (works the abs, obliques, thighs, glutes, quads, and shoulders) Lunge to your left, with your hands down at your sides (palms facing inward and fingers to the floor), and hold for two seconds. Bring your right foot up so it’s next to your left knee. Then bring your arms above your head with your palms facing each other, and bend at the waist to the left as far as you can without toppling over. Do 12 to 15 reps on one side, then 12 to 15 on the other. (If you have three- to five-pound dumbells-or even bottles of water-use them and lower the reps to 10 to 12.)

3. Bicep Curl/Shoulder Press. (“This exercise will throw off your balance, so you’re working your stabilizing muscles-the smaller muscles mainly in the back and abs,”. You’ll need 3- to 10-pound weights, bottles of water, or half-gallon milk jugs for each side.) Holding the weights, squat down like you’re doing a curtsy, with your right leg in back. At the same time do a bicep curl on both sides with your arms in a “V” position. Come up out of the curtsy and lower you arms, keeping your elbows tight to your sides. Bring your left knee up to your chest so you are balancing on one foot. Push your arms straight up into the air, then back down to your sides. Anytime you bring your arms overhead in a repetitive motion, you’re bringing your heart rate up. Repeat 15 times on each side if you’re not using weights, 10 to 12 times with weights.

(From woman’s day)

Even though the recession is making it harder to land a job, you can up your chances of snagging a new position by following these tips from Good Morning America’s career expert Tory Johnson, author of Fired to Hired: Bouncing Back from Job Loss to Get to Work Right Now.

1. Get it out of your system.
It’s OK to have a bit of a pity party if you get laid off, but just for a week or two. “Losing a job is hard on your self-esteem, and you’re going to be emotional,” says Johnson. Give yourself a little time to work through those feelings, then move on.

2. Ready your résumé.
Create a master résumé (if you don’t already have one), then tailor different versions of it to each new job you apply to. “If you’re a baby boomer, leave off your college graduation date and limit your experience to 15 years,” suggests Johnson. Unfair as it is, ageism in hiring does exist. So play up your strengths: “Don’t just list your responsibilities,” says Johnson. “That will read like a job description. Instead focus on your specific successes and accomplishments. Detail results. People hire not just for what you did, but how well you did it.”

Are we dressing for sex at work?

3. Create a digital identity.
In this era of Facebook, Twitter and other social networking sites, having an online presence is key, especially for people over 40. “It boosts your relevancy and is another way for people to find you,” says Johnson. “If you want to use just one, make it LinkedIn. It’s the most professional of the networking sites and is used primarily for business.” List your experience and ask former colleagues to post recommendations.

4. Don’t rely too much on the Internet.
“Job boards are a great way to find leads, but only 30% of your time should be spent online,” says Johnson. “The bulk of your time should be used to make direct connections, which are even more important during a recession.” The Internet is flooded with applications. These days, recruiters are more likely to find potential candidates through word-of-mouth.

I recall a cool dude who told me that he wouldn’t mind if a woman was interested in him for his money and all that he could provide.

“Doesn’t bother me one bit. In fact if you are around me and you don’t want anything to do with my lifestyle I’m thinking something is wrong with you.”

“Really, so you could marry a gold digger?”

“Sure, as long as she is giving me what I want in return.”

“Like what?”

“Sex and lots of it, keep a clean house, raise kids well.”

“You won’t feel used?”

“Hell no, look I’m a man. I know what my role is and what women want. Most men who work hard do so, so that they can meet women.”

Ladies, men see right through “I don’t want you for your house, car, cash…I love you for who you are.” You might as well spit in their face for you have just insulted their ego. I don’t know why women tell this lie, mostly to themselves, as a way to prove they aren’t shallow.

With the recent layoffs and men getting laid off at a higher rate than women, economics experts are predicting that women may become the majority of the American workforce as early as this summer.

According to the New York Times, it’s possible that women will become a majority of the work force for the first time in American history. Years ago, women were a small percentage of the work force (outside the home). During much of the 20th century – especially the 1970s and 1980s – women’s share of the labor force increased. By 1990, the work force was 47 percent female and 53 percent male, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. Many view this as one of the most important and desirable social and economic transformations of our lifetimes.

Why your co-workers act like children.

As much as we love our sisters, we love variety in the workforce.

Tell us! Do you prefer working with men or women?

About a week and a half ago, I spent two fairly excruciating hours on what had to be the longest, slowest moving line in sample sale history! While waiting, I encountered everyone from quitters to disgruntled shoppers to patient loyalists who had already been waiting for five and a half hours for the liquidation of downtown line Mayle…it all got me wondering — how could a designer with such a fanatic customer base be going out of business? Didn’t help that a couple nights before and four storefronts over, BabyStyle, owner of Cadeau Maternity shuttered all 6 of its doors and its web business-after 10 years of delivering maternity chic-in a liquidation of an expectantista’s lifetime. So, what gives?

Money is getting tight and the boyfriend and yours truly are constantly trying to find ways to curb our spending. Last night we realized we haven’t gone out for dinner in a couple of weeks and I suggested why not have date night at home.

15 recession friendly wedding tips

Home can be the most romantic setting with a little effort. Set the mood, light some candles and enjoy a bottle of wine with dinner at a much more reasonable price. One of my favorite wines is a Sauvignon Blanc by Kim Crawford which you can get for $14.

Here’s an easy inexpensive recipe for your next date night at home:

Sauteed Chicken in Mustard-Cream Sauce

4 boneless, skinless chicken breasts (6 ounces each)
1/4 teaspoon salt
1/4 teaspoon pepper
2 tablespoons olive oil
1/4 cup dry white wine, or chicken broth
1/2 cup heavy cream (I used half and half with fine results)
2 tablespoons Dijon mustard
1 teaspoon dried tarragon (or 1 tablespoon chopped fresh)

Sprinkle chicken breasts with salt and pepper. In a large skillet, heat oil over medium-high heat. Add chicken; saute until cooked through, 10 to 12 minutes, turning once. Transfer to a plate; keep warm.

Pour wine into hot skillet; cook, stirring, until reduced by half, about 1 minute. Whisk in cream, mustard, and tarragon. Cook, whisking, until thickened, about 2 minutes.

Pour any accumulated chicken juices into sauce. Right before serving, drizzle cream sauce over chicken. Serve with steamed asparagus.

This meal will cost you no more than $7, as you already have most of the ingredients in your home. Try getting this meal at a restaurant for such a cheap price.

Want to get married, but you’re faced with a crazy economy and don’t have the bucks to spare for a huge wedding? Wendy Atterberry from The Frisky has a few tips to keeping your wedding beautiful, yet budget-friendly.

[From The Frisky]

1. Quit “Shoulding” All Over Yourself
The biggest cost-cutting tactic in planning a wedding is to focus on what you want, not what you think you should do or have or wear. Just because every bridal magazine and your Great Aunt Sally say you have to have a $1,200 veil doesn’t mean you do! In fact, you don’t have to have a veil at all! You also don’t have to have Save The Date cards, a 3-tiered cake, or a poofy white gown if you don’t want them. These aren’t the things that make a wedding a wedding. YOU (and your betrothed) saying your vows, expressing your love, and making a commitment to each other is what makes a wedding a wedding. Everything else is just icing on the cake (or pie, if that’s what you prefer).

2. Choose A Free Or Cheap Location
Most banquet halls are ridiculously expensive, so before you drop a deposit that could pay for a home, think about places you could say your vows that won’t put you in debt. Backyards, parks, restaurants, your best friend’s parents’ enormo house, even a community rec room can all be wonderfully intimate spots for a wedding. After researching lots of places, my fiancé and I settled on a small garden in Central Park. It costs a fraction of what some of the raw spaces and reception halls in the city would cost and it comes with its own flowers! Afterward, we’re having our reception at a restaurant, where we’re paying about ¼ what a typical caterer would charge per person. Choosing a restaurant for a reception is a fantastic way to keep costs down, particularly if you find one that doesn’t charge a booking fee.

3. Avoid Wedding Rush Hour
Saturday night is the rush hour of weddings, so restaurants and wedding halls will cost much more then than, say, on a Friday afternoon. For religious reasons, my fiancé and I couldn’t have a wedding on a Saturday and since we wanted to celebrate with friends into the night, we decided a Sunday wouldn’t work either, so we’re going with a Friday morning ceremony, followed by a lunch reception and a party at our apartment later in the night and we’re saving hundreds of dollars in the process. Also keep in mind that spring and summer are the peak wedding seasons, so consider off-peak months to save even more bucks on your wedding.

4. Have A Potluck
Wanna really save a bundle on food? Invite everyone to bring a dish in lieu of a gift. You’ll have a great variety of eats, and you won’t be stuck returning a bunch of toasters you don’t need.

5. Keep The Wedding Small
Consider making the wedding family only, or immediate family and close friends. Resist the urge to invite everyone’s “plus 1″ unless their plus 1 is someone you actually know well. Think about inviting one group of people to the reception – often the most expensive part of a wedding – and having a BYO party at your apartment for a more inclusive group of people. Who says you have to buy dinner for everyone you want to celebrate your special day with?

Okay, I know that "it's a recession!" is the new catchphrase these days, but sometimes, it really does apply to certain situations. Like the one involving this new natural python Christian Louboutin "Dillian" pump, which is over two thousand effing dollars.

Okay, I know that “it’s a recession!” is the new catchphrase these days, but sometimes, it really does apply to certain situations. Like the one involving this new natural python Christian Louboutin “Dillian” pump, which is over two thousand effing dollars.

It’s a shoe.

An embellished shoe. Which means its wearability will be MAYBE a year and a half, if you really want to push it, before they’re so out of style, you have to save them for your grandkids to rock as vintage.

It really is a fly shoe, but how many times can you really wear it?

It’s a recession, dammit.

Sorry, but come on. If I had a cool billion chilling in my bank account, I probably still wouldn’t buy them, because Bernie Madoff taught me that money can go away much more quickly than any of us ever thought it could.

Then again, on a shopping high, if I had it, I probably WOULD buy them, and then I’d hate myself for it like 3 weeks later. But what a nice 3 weeks it would be.

What do you think of these shoes?

I’d like to share a story with you about two interesting people that we ALL know…

Ms. Jane D. Acceptor thinks, “I’ve got this dead-end job, I’m bored to tears, but hey – it pays my bills. It keeps a roof over my head. So what if I hate what I do, and I’m not crazy about the people I work with? It’s a job. Aren’t you supposed to hate your job?”

Jane goes through life just accepting how it all turns out. But Mrs. Wendy Ago-Getter is a different animal. She used to be in Jane’s place, she actually worked in the cubicle right next to her. She and Jane used to complain, complain and complain about how their boss was an idiot, how management had no clue, and about how other co-workers got on their nerves. Sure they weren’t the nicest things to say about others but they had a roaring good time doing it!

They were bitter and thrived off of each other’s negative energy. They threw pity parties on a daily basis on instant messenger and on their lunch breaks.

But then… something changed. Wendy’s Husband, Mr. Getter, introduced her to the law of attraction, because her bad attitude was bringing him down and causing their marriage to get a bit rocky. Once Wendy started to become aware of how she allowed her energy to flow, she also noticed how depression and unhappiness took control of her life. It seemed as if she WANTED this for herself. And it was at this moment when she realized she had the power to make a change. With this gradual mental shift she started to get to know herself a bit more. She started to dig deep for her inner power.

When Wendy had free time, she wrote children’s books and found pleasure in this craft. Whenever she got home, and after she put her five-year-old to bed, she wrote. She loved her newly discovered imagination where all her stories stemmed from. After all, it came natural to her. It was so easy to create fun characters. What she loved most was reading them to her daughter and seeing that smile on her face as she entered that imaginary land with Wendy.

Well, Jane thought what Wendy was doing was just ridiculous. Writing children’s books? COME ON, GET REAL! Jane became jealous when Wendy slowly started to pull away from her. The lunch breaks went down from two a week to none a week. Wendy enjoyed writing in the park on her break instead. Wendy felt alive again. She had so much fun writing.

One day Wendy’s daughter brought in one of Wendy’s book to school so that the teacher could read it to the class. The teacher was thoroughly impressed with her writing style. She was especially taken aback at the students’ reaction to the story. They LOVED it! Turns out that the teacher’s brother was an agent for authors and the teacher didn’t hesitate to set up a meeting with him and Wendy.

Wendy couldn’t believe it. “My little old books? It was just a hobby. I would do it for free,” she raved. But then she started to accept her gift and realized that she did deserve whatever was coming to her. She started to picture her book on shelves of books stores, she imagined children in the park reading her books, she saw her daughter bragging about her mom – the author! Positive visualization became her daily habit. Her husband told her that her mental shift is what caused these changes in her life. There are NO COINCIDENCES.

A month later, her company downsized her department and, of course, that was no surprise. She received a pretty good severance and was actually thrilled for the opportunity to write more. Turns out, her new agent landed her a bidding war for her books. Simon & Schuster and Random House wanted a two-book deal from her. They were up to 50k for her advance; she hoped it would go even higher!

Could this be happening? Wendy and her husband were practically floating from the stream of good news. It was like a darn fairy tale in one of her books.

Funny enough, Jane D. Acceptor didn’t get laid off. She was transferred to another department and given even more work to cover all of the folks that left. Jane wasn’t happy about it but of course, what the heck could she do?

The fact is, she could do a whole lot. We are all deliberate creators of our lives. Jane was just existing – not living.

Newsflash: If you continue living your life as a victim, focus on what’s wrong with everything, and place blame on everyone, you will only bring more of what you DON’T want into your life.

How ’bout looking in the mirror and starting there? Where we are right this very second is because of what we have done in our past. The fairy tale that Wendy is now living is very possible. You can do a 360 with your career, your business and your relationships when you are not sleepwalking through life.

It’s sad to say that we have all been brainwashed into thinking that most of our desires are not only self-serving egotistical no-no’s but absurdly impossible.

BEGIN THE REVOLUTION OF A NEW OUTLOOK ON YOUR FUTURE…

1. Spend time alone; get to know yourself. Journal your dreams, meditate, pray, read self-help books, do whatever works for you at your pace, but make time to do it. Have tons of people in the house? Go for a daily walk, go to the library, get a babysitter. Just do it alone.

2. Find out what your true calling is. What are you really here to do?

3. Get rid of the “Janes” in your life. Do away with the toxic people, the emotional vampires that suck the life right out of you. These are the people who enjoy being depressed and want to take you along for the ride.

4. Surround yourself with go-getters, not acceptors!

5. Say no to pity parties. The second you feel one coming on, switch it around and start thinking about what positive outcome you want. You know a pity party is on its way when you start thinking, “Why does this always have to happen to me? I’ll never be able to pay my bills! I’m such a loser! I will never find the right mate, etc…”

Cut it out already! Stop whining and complaining and DO SOMETHING about it. Talk about your dreams and your future. Write about it and fantasize about it constantly.

Is this the face of a guy who would sell you a lemon?

Just kidding.

According to the Washington Post,

“If you buy a car from Chrysler or General Motors, you will be able to get your car serviced and repaired, just like always,” the president announced from the Grand Foyer of the White House this morning.

And that’s not all! “Your warranty will be safe,” the salesman-in-chief went on. “In fact, it will be safer than it’s ever been, because, starting today, the United States government will stand behind your warranty.”

And check out these incentives!

“If you buy a car anytime this year, you may be able to deduct the cost of any sales and excise taxes,” the president promised.

No credit – no problem!

“We are working intensively with the auto finance companies to increase the flow of credit to both consumers and dealers,” Obama pledged.

So why’s he trying to pimp out American-made cars? Read the rest of the article here if the answer isn’t obvious already, and get to buying!

Want to save money during this recession? Take your lunch and snacks to work. You’ll save $2-3 every day on lunch and a dollar or so on snacks. That adds up to $500 to $1,000 each year!

Here are five brown bag lunch ideas:

1. Lunch on leftovers
When cooking dinner, make a little extra and take the leftovers for your lunch. This is always more economical than going out to lunch. Looking for leftover ideas? Try these:

2. Eat in season
Particularly helpful in saving money, take advantage of seasonal fruits and vegetables. Make them part of a meal or take them as a healthy, budget-friendly snack.

Find out the 10 yummy fat burning foods

3. Make pita sandwiches
Pitas are easy to pack and quite neat to eat. Dr Canfield suggests Mexican pita sandwiches: Stuff a whole wheat pita with a variety of healthy Mexican-style choices like pinto beans, black beans, cubed chicken breast, salsa, brown rice, shredded lettuce, sliced tomatoes, sliced avocado and diced onion. As a side, pack a fruit of your choice (for example, an apple, banana, grapes or sliced papaya) and a sparkling water. Here are two more pita recipes for lunch:

4. Toss a “tupperware” salad
Fill a tupperware or other container with lettuce greens and top with sliced tomato, cucumber, onion, shredded carrot, garbanzo beans or any raw veggies or bean you like. Use a nice aged balsamic vinegar for your salad dressing – balsamic is a fat-free and healthy alternative to high-fat commercial salad dressings.

You know things are bad when the strip clubs start holding job fairs. A strip club in Rhode Island is holding a job fair to attract out-of-work women who might otherwise never consider dancing for tips.

Hoping to take advantage of Rhode Island’s floundering economy, owners of the Foxy Lady strip club in Providence plan to hold a job fair on Saturday.

They say they’re looking to fill around 30 positions, from strippers and waitresses to disc jockeys and bartenders, at that club and two others in Massachusetts.

“I need more managers, I need more competent staff, and I need more attractive waitresses to go along with the ones I have right now,” said co-owner Tom Tsoumas.

The Providence club isn’t immune from the recession but is still drawing customers willing to drink and pay for lap dances, said manager Bob Travisono.

“It’s taken a hit,” he said. “It’s not as bad as restaurants and stuff like that. In times like this, they seem to drink their sorrows away.”

Tsoumas said he hopes some who might shun strip clubs when the economy is good might consider shedding their clothes now – or at least working as a floor host or bartender.

(From sandrarose.com)

What ever happened to the good old days of waiting tables?

I know we’re in a recession and we’re doing our part to save a few bucks, but this right here–I DON’T THINK SO!!!

Riding the recession news angle, DivaCup explains in a press release that the cup would save you about $150 to $200 in pads and tampons each year. That’s because unlike disposable femilady products, you empty, rinse, (occasionally boil) and reuse one DivaCup for up to a year.

Hundreds of women are saying how personally empowered they feel.

The menstrual cup has been around for decades — a rubber version was first patented in 1932 — but disappeared in the 1960s after little commercial success.

Would you use this? Tell us what you think about this product.

[From Time.com]

If you’re one of the dwindling ranks of the still employed, you know you’re among a fortunate bunch. In this market, a job is about the only asset that continues to have value. So, if your livelihood were threatened, how far would you go to hang on to it? Would you lie to your colleagues? Would you flirt with your boss?

Those were some of the questions posed to 1,200 American workers in a new survey conducted by Harris Interactive from Feb. 25-27. Fully 28% of respondents said they would act immorally – including lying or backstabbing – to keep their jobs. The survey was commissioned by Adecco, the world’s largest staffing-solutions company, which oversees 700,000 employees around the world in any given week. The company wanted to know how the recession has affected people’s attitudes toward their career and job prospects, which are, of course, getting only dimmer – since last fall, the number of available jobs has declined while the number of job seekers has remained constant, according to Bernadette Kenny, chief career officer at Adecco.

Given the state of the economy, perhaps it comes as no big shock that 13% of the survey respondents said they would outright lie or exaggerate to keep their jobs – even though such behavior is forbidden by many companies’ ethics policies. About 2% said they would take credit for someone else’s work or flirt with the boss to get ahead, and 4% would lie about having common interests with their boss to deepen their bond with a superior. “The negative responses were surprisingly high,” says Kenny. “People are very frightened of losing their job, and they become threatened. People make extensive plans for Christmas, for vacations, weddings and holidays, but they put very little planning into their own career, which is a family’s greatest investment. So they are not prepared financially and emotionally for the loss of steady income.” And under that threat, she says, people are more likely to resort to dishonesty to save their livelihood.

Click here to read the rest of the article. How far would YOU go to keep your job?

You don’t always have to lie or flirt, you know. There are other ways to keep your job.

If you kept your morals and lost your job anyway, here are a few ways to survive during the recession!

The housing bubble has burst, job growth has become job loss, and the cost of credit is going nowhere but through the roof.

Here are some tips to surviving (and thriving) during a financial crisis.

(From sheknows.com)

Enjoy little splurges

“One latte a week can produce more joy than a daily latte if it’s savored,” says Dr. Yarrow. The secret to not feeling deprived is to be mindful and appreciative about the things you do buy. When you do spend money, enjoy it and don’t sabotage the experience by feeling guilty.

Thrifty is the new black

Considering everyone seems to be mindful of their pocketbooks, there will be less social pressure to spend and have the latest, shiniest fill in the blank here item. Dr. Yarrow explains, “For many, this will be a relief and take stress out of their life.” It’ll be cool to save a few bucks and be thrifty. “Simplicity feels psychologically better than excess.”

Use your smarts

Another survival tool is to get creative and think out of the box. “It’s not only how can I get more stuff for less money but how can I get more pleasure or nutrition or convenience/meaning out of the money that I spend?” Instead of a bi-weekly pedicure, it might be a bottle of Lancome nail polish along with free mascara that comes as a gift with the purchase.

Transition takes effort

While these actions require a conscious effort on your part, realize it is indeed a transition phase and is not permanent or painful. “Within six weeks though, it’ll become a habit. You’ll look back and say, “I can’t believe I thought I needed all that!”

You’re not alone

We’re in this together; if you’ve tried slashing your budget in the past to save up for a big ticket item that’s certainly one thing. Collectively saving up for the bigger picture in general is another story. “There will be a lot of social reinforcement to come back. In the same way that comparing new goodies was fun in the past, comparing savings will be fun now.

[From The Frisky's "Mind of Man"]

The Hobopocalyse continues unabated: the stock market is at its lowest in twelve years, unemployment is at its highest in decades, and nobody knows how bad it’s going to get. But the good news is, I didn’t have to pitchfork-fight mole people for canned food today. Your 401K might be tanking, but canned food will always be valuable. And so will the shoulders of those you love and who love you back, even if, at this moment, some shoulders have to bear a greater weight than others.

According to a recent article in Newsweek, you can expect unemployed men, recent victims of the Great Recession of this still very new century, to revert to their lowest common gender stereotype. That means boorish frat boys decorating their fortresses of solitude with posters of bikini-clad hotties and crushing beer cans against their thick, Neanderthal skulls. And, for certain, a lot of men are being laid off. Since the economy began to crater in late-2007, four-fifths of the nearly four million people who have lost their jobs have been dudes.

When a man loses his job, his entire identity goes out the window. Society tells him that he is valued for three main things: an ability to imbibe, seduce women, and earn money. Of course, the first two are impossible to achieve with out the last one. A man is his job; it is a mirror that reflects his tribal worth. And a laid-off man is a man who becomes a clingy, bratty hermit. He turns into himself and finds flimsy shelter in perverted versions of what he’s been programmed to think makes him special. Beers will be quaffed until pizza fights for air, hardcore porn downloaded wholesale, aggressive, macho snorting will replace actual words.

But wait! Recent popular trend articles point out that some men are reacting to the economic downturn by auto-emasculating, transforming themselves from corporate lumberjacks into bizarre caricatures of 1950′s housewives, all baking, sewing, and homemaking. When canned, so says the mass media, men can either become chubby Vikings or anal-retentive Mr. Moms. I can haz moar choicez plz?

Here’s what you can expect if your man is enjoying the distinctly humiliating process of collecting unemployment…

Okay, so the recession sucks. Pretty badly, for some. But does economic strife mean your relationship has to suffer? Not so, says The Frisky‘s Jessica Wakeman.

[From The Frisky]

The drastic front page financial news is certainly a downer. As layoffs sweep the nation and more homes are foreclosed, tensions are running higher than CEO bonuses. But it’s not all gloom and doom out there – lots of Americans are saying that the recent economic downturn is affecting their romantic relationships in a positive way.

Take it from them-after the jump are 10 reasons why the recession is actually good for your love life…

1. Because there’s less pressure to show off on dates.
Pinching pennies is easy on the wallet and on the ego. By giving up fancy dinners out on the town, Justin, 33, in New York City, says he and his boyfriend find “solace” in their more low-key plans. He said he views their money saving ways as a “staycation” – a vacation where you stay at home – so there is “much less pressure on going out and being fabulous.”

2. Because a laid-off love has more time to spoil you.
You still come home tired after a long day’s work; your significant other has been job searching in his pajamas all day. Who do you think has more energy to dole out the TLC?

Alana, 25, from California, says that after her boyfriend lost his job, he made pampering his sweetheart his new job. “One day, I arrived home to find a hundred tea lights already lit in my bedroom, music playing, lotions out, and the bed turned down,” she says. “Everything was in place so that I could slip out of my clothes and enjoy a nice, long massage from my honey.”

Now doesn’t that sound nice?

3. Because you’ll finally take the plunge and move in together.
Deciding to cohabitate is such a big step for a relationship that it’s easy to stress over it. Wendy, 27, from Los Angeles, is dating an actor and they used to live separately – until they realized how much more they could save by sharing a bed and a lease. The recession “pushed us to move in together because sharing one bedroom is lighter on our wallets,” she says, adding, “It has also been amazing for our relationship.”

4. Because you can watch whole seasons of serial TV together.
Now is the best time ever to perfect the ideal spooning position – so make like a couch potato and rent TV series you can watch from start to finish together.

Michael, 24, and his girlfriend both work in entry-level jobs in financial services in New York City and he says there is a good chance that both of them might be laid off in the months ahead. So they’re preemptively saving money by going out on the town less and Netflix-ing old TV shows instead.

“We’re trying to build emergency cash, just in case, and as a result we tend to make our evenings together around just being with each other,” he says. “There’s been some take-out Chinese and “West Wing” evenings that have been totally fantastic.”

5. Because more free time means more time for getting to know each other.
Nine-to-five is a long time to be away from your new infatuation. Kate, 28, a journalist in New York City, lost her job earlier this year – exactly when she started dating a guy who had just returned to the U.S. from a year abroad and was also looking for a job.

“It was a great way to spend the first couple of weeks of a new relationship,” Kate says, bragging about eight-hour smooching sessions. “That’s when you just want to be around someone all the time-and we actually could be.”

What are five more ways the recession can help your love life? Click here to find out.

If you’re like me, you’re trying to stay positive…yet realistic. However, I know it’s getting harder to do unless you live under a rock. Every time you turn on the news, turn on the radio or read the paper you hear a snazzy new, yet depressing way to remind us that we are doomed. Okay, I kid, I kid. Doomed is what they want us to think, so that we’ll keep tuning in. However, you can’t escape phrases such as, “in these tough economic times”, “we have to remain recession proof”, “it’s a credit crunch”, “get debt-free”, “you can escape foreclosure and bankruptcy”, etc. etc. Scary how fear drives our society, huh?

I thought the one place I could escape it all was the peaceful steam room of my gym and get my “me time” on. WRONG. As I sat down, ready to release a deep sigh, on both sides of me were two gentlemen belly-aching about the economy. Great!

In a loud obnoxious voice one says, “Man, the only place you can probably get a job now is McDonald’s! Their sales are up 80% from what I heard.”

The other guy replies, “McDonald’s? Yeah, they have those $1 meals. Times are tough man. I heard Condoms are up in sales though, crazy huh?” We all had to laugh at that one. Hot passion and greasy Big Macs don’t actually go together, well – ahem – maybe if you’re into that. LOL

But..see how rumors get started? I found out McDonald’s is actually up 7.1% since January. However, even if it was 80%, I doubt flipping burgers at Mickey D’s is the last solution for us all. I did a little research on the condom information, and lo and behold… Trojan is doing pretty well.Their VP of Marketing says. “If people don’t have the money to go out to a fancy dinner or are looking to cut back, Trojan gives them some real affordable ways to stay in and make some great memories together,” Contraception may also be more popular during a time when families are stretching dollars and want to avoid having more mouths to feed. “Obviously people in general want to avoid … unintended pregnancies.”

Hmmm, when you put it that way, makes a lot of sense. And here I thought people were just relieving their rececession stress in a safe and fun way. LOL

Well my point I want to get across (and believe me, I have one) is: please don’t give up, and don’t get sucked in. Trust and believe that there are still people making money and spending money. It’s your job as an entrepreneur to find them! Many entrepreneurs might be a tad shaken up by the news, especially if you have all of your eggs in ONE basket. However, when you add Entrepreneur to your title, you also inherit “Risk Taker” as your middle name. You also should know you have to have a few services and products to rely on, not just ONE. If you don’t have a risk-taking bone in your body…well, this might not be the life for you.

If you haven’t operated your business on your toes as yet, there’s no better time than now. Get cracking with some basic strategies to keep your business momentum and not get lost in the shuffle with all of the others who have shut their doors. You have to work on creative ways to stay current and stay on people’s minds, all without breaking the bank!

Gone are the days of having one job or one big contract. Whether you just started your business as a ‘side hustle” or you’ve been in business for many years, you should know that BEING CONTENT AND COMFORTABLE is a recipe for disaster.

Key Ways to Stay on Your Toes (ah, what the heck) in These Economic Times. (It does have sort of a ring to it.) LOL

1. Know Your Vision

* Create your vision for your business.

* Get clear on what you want, how you want to be remembered and who your target market is

* Create an action plan and go for it. Don’t be another person with an idea that never comes to pass.

2. Join Forces

* Don’t try to take on all costs alone. Work with a partner on various projects.

* Cross promote and get creative.

3. Tighten up your spending!

* Print less, and if you have to print to review something on paper, recycle paper in your home.

* Have two cells phones and a home phone? Consolidate! Eat out? Start cooking more.

* Barter more!

* Share an office space or cut it out if you really don’t need it.

4. Become a social marketing superstar or a local celebrity.

* Put yourself out there and start promoting yourself.

* Turn yourself into a local celebrity.

* Create a blog or an ebook.

5. Never Be Forgotten!

* If you still have a full-time job, work on ways on becoming indispensable. Go above and beyond Ask for projects and create some of your own.

* Learn new skills and also ask your manager what can you do to go to the next level.

* Surprise an old client with a “Thinking of you” card

* Shoot them an article with tips. They’ll remember you next time around when they need you!

* Call call call…Go through old numbers and stay in touch with old contacts. You never know how things have changed for either of you. One may in the position to help another.

6. Seek Support

* Get the guidance you need to key you on track to achieve your goals.

* Create a mastermind group, advisory board, find a mentor, or a coach ~shameless plug~ Try me out at NO COST!

[From The Frisky]

It seems that all anyone is talking about lately is the economy, so why is money still such a tough topic to discuss with your nearest and dearest? They say married couples fight over money more than anything else, but what about when you just started dating? That’s possibly even more awkward.

The First Date
Though Dr. Phil feels otherwise, my take on this has always been he (or she) who asks, pays. (The bloviating shrink says men should always be the ones to pony up.) And if you don’t pay for the whole thing, you should at least offer to split the tab. Incredibly (to me), most women I spoke to thought I was an idiot and firmly believed the dude should always pay on a first date-though for some this was a recent change of heart.

Kate, a 33-year-old writer told me, “I tend to try to pay for myself, but as I get older and more comfortable with my awesomeness, I kind of wish and hope that the other person will be a little more old-fashioned about it.” Good point. If someone’s eating opposite Amazing Me, shouldn’t she or he pay for the privilege? After all, I’m entertaining and cute and if you let me order dessert there may be some smooching in your future.

Regardless of your feelings on the matter, whatever you do, don’t leave the house without enough money to pay for at least your share. It’s a first date so while he may seem great (and generous) on paper, you never really know what you’re getting into until he’s sitting across from you. Sure, he might be staring adoringly deep into your eyes, but then again, his pants might be held up with duct tape. Do you really want to count on that dude to know the meaning of “gratuity?”

What to say: “That’s so generous of you-can I at least leave the tip?”
What not to say: “This princess doesn’t pay for food!”

So what do you do after the first date, especially if you end up with your new beau? Read the rest of the article here.

In an article entitled “Surrogates: Redefining Motherhood,” CBS explores the increasingly popular act of carrying someone else’s child to term for monetary gain. According to the article,

The miracle has a high price. The fee for the entire surrogacy process ranges from $80,000 to well over $100,000.

Of that, doctors get $9,000 to $15,000; agencies, $15,000 to $20,000; and the surrogates? First-timers get $18,000 to $25,000; experienced surrogates, up to $40,000.

With the unfortunate condition our economy’s in at the moment, would you consider carrying someone else’s child for the sake of your family’s income?
