Fast forward to the present and you can barely get a second season out of these watered down, slapstick style comedy TV series’ like “House of Payne,” VH1′s “Single Ladies” and BET’s “Let’s Stay Together.” I would never even think of buying a DVD series of ANY season of these shows. Why not? Well, these are not necessarily shows that you can watch rerun after rerun and not get annoyed by much less remember they existed six years from now.

Like your parents boasted about shows like “Good Times,” “Sandford & Son,” and “The Jeffersons” to us, we’ll skip right on over the host of black TV shows post-new millennium and go back to the hilarious black comedies of the 90′s and tell our children about it. As of late I’ve been noticing a pattern taking shape within Black television, and that is that ratings seem to always be an excuse behind a show getting pulled. Which makes me wonder, if nobody is watching black sitcoms anymore then what are they watching, because TV is definitely still being watched.

The other day a very influential black woman spoke briefly on the state of black television and it really made me wonder. Then I realized it, I’ve been trained. I can’t speak for the readers out there but I realized that I’ve been trained to like what (before just a few years ago), I swore I’d never fall victim to: and that is my love for “real-life” drama or “reality tv.” The television industry has trained me to become transfixed with seeing pointless drama instead of the scripted, yet positive images and lifestyles that in my own reality would take much hard work to attain. The industry figured out what myself as well as many other reality TV lovers “desired to see” before we even realized it–which is the highly-scripted and well-rehearsed drink-throwing, hair-shifting, “Who Gon’ Check Me Boo”-style drama on TV every week. What I didn’t know was that the public (if you don’t like reality TV, you can quietly exclude yourself from this group) has become obsessed with the idea of “real-life” drama, which is exactly why you have reality shows like “Basketball Wives,” and “Real Housewives of Atlanta” and shows that we think are reality are the total opposite.

Not only that, but we actually watch and create celebrities out of reality TV ‘stars’ as opposed to watching well-trained actors and then we complain when these TV series’ dissipate due to low ratings. I realized that the problem is much less the commentary and content of these shows and more so the people and the TV industry giving the people what they want. Ultimately what I’m saying is that, with the many different black TV shows that has came and went over the course of the last 10 years, I can count on 1 hand the amount of shows that have made a lasting impression.

Many people complain and say that we have no black TV shows yet divert their time to reality television. Evolution is definitely a great way to promote change and growth but do you think reality TV has enough longevity to permanently take over for the Black Television series? Is the Black Television Series dead? And if so can it be revived, if so what would it take to make these shows more memorable and widely accepted?

We reported on Chad Ocho Cinco’s upcoming dating reality show “The Ultimate Catch” back in March: Will You Apply For A Spot On Ocho Cinco’s New Dating Show?

We hadn’t gotten any word on when filming began but, according to this letter sent in to TheYBF, it has – and not without a lot of drama!

According to a kicked-off contestant of the show who says she is of Caribbean descent, Chad Ocho Cinco is only requesting that light-skinned girls be included in his line-up.

Here’s the email she sent after being sent home early:

I was recently selected as one of the final 85 for Chad’s (OchoCinco) dating reality show. Long story short, Chad has identity issues and primarily chose Latinas and white girls (mostly brunette’s). Many of the black girls were eliminated right off the back (including Rabbit from “Real Chance of Love”)<– might I add Cali made a cameo, as well. I managed to make “Top 30″ before getting eliminated.

The entire day was unorganized and Chad only wanted to do things his way; he wouldn’t listen to producers and all selections were made by him only. In the beginning, Chad walked the field and immediately began to dismiss girls.

He later called a group of ten girls (including myself) up to the front and told us to “Not worry. You’re not going anywhere.”

Shortly after, he directed us to do a quick warm-up lap (at the Rose Bowl in Pasadena, CA). This warm-up lap turned into chaos; lap after lap producers were unsure of what to do next, so they directed girls to keep running. Luckily, I stay with a personal trainer, so I ran a total of 6 laps before I stopped for water. Some girls began to hyperventilate, while others began to walk.

One by one, Chad starting pulling black girls aside and telling them “bye.” During my stop for a cup of water, Chad called me over along with a group of six girls – 5 black and 1 white. He then said “Umm…you guys are eliminated…yeah…eliminated. Except for you.” And guess who he pulled out the group? The white girl.

Another letter also came in, spilling all the behind-the-scenes dirty deets. But this time, it was from a member of the production staff.

When you watch the show it’s going to appear as if he had to narrow down 84 girls to 17. In reality. 17 girls were pre-selected by the producers and flown to LA a week prior to do interviews and photo shoots for the show. The other 67 girls on set were “extras” filling in.

When Chad arrived on set, he saw a mixed variety of nationalities that the producers had already pre-selected – five black girls, 5 Spanish girls, 6 white girls, and a girl of Middle Eastern decent. He seemed rather upset and acted irritated. The producer felt that he was unhappy and after talking to them off-air, Chad wanted to revise the list of the pre-selected girls. He wanted to send home all of the Black girls and replace them with some of the Caucasian and Hispanic “extras” that were already on set.

After not having picked any Black girls to remain on the show the producers pressured him into picking at least two. Chad, in turn, chooses the two most GHETTO girls there to represent the us. And by ghetto…you know the ones that cause black men to say that’s the reason they don’t date black women anymore.

It’s really sad to see a man who has an entirely black family, including beautiful black children, have such low regard for black women. I’ve heard stories about his preference in the past but never in a million years would I think he would make it that obvious, especially knowing that his TV show is not exactly catering to the white folks.

This is not a good look.

FROM CNN: One of the former cast mates of the “Real Housewives of Atlanta” will soon be a housewife no more.

DeShawn Snow and her husband, former NBA player Eric Snow, are divorcing according to a report in the Atlanta Journal-Constitution.

Eric Snow recently filed divorce papers in Fulton County Superior Court in Georgia stating that there is “no hope of reconciliation” for the pair who has been married for 12 years.  He requests joint custody of their three sons.

The family was featured on the first season of “RHOA” which included an episode about a less than successful charity event hosted by DeShawn Snow at their mansion.

She told Essence magazine she was asked to leave the show after the first season because she wasn’t bringing enough drama.

“[One of the producers] called and said that I was ‘too human for a circus show’ and that because the show did so well, they are about to pump up the drama and they didn’t think that I would fit in,” she said. “I’m fine with the decision.”

Snow was replaced by current castmate Kandi Burruss.

Club Cafe Radio wrote:

We had these two ladies on our show tonight, and when Poprah thought that Royce was going to be on the show WITH her she started going HAM via twitter (Initially, we were planning to interview them separately). According to TMZ:

Shaunie O’Neal’s lawyer, Sorrell Trope, tells TMZ Shaq and Shaunie have reached agreement on all terms of the divorce, including property, custody and support.

Under the agreement, the Florida courts will have jurisdiction to officially divorce the couple. In addition, a Florida judge will handle any issues that may arise involving property division and spousal support. Trope tells TMZ the California courts will have jurisdiction over any issues related to child custody.

Also, Shaunie is prepping for the debut of her new reality series “Basketball Wives.” In an exclusive interview with Essence Magazine, she explains what went wrong in her marriage, blaming Miami groupies, whom she says are the most “aggressive” she has even seen, and Shaq’s inability to resist temptation.

Shaunie on when things started to go bad in her marriage:
[Shaq was traded to the Miami Heat] “Miami is a great city. It just wasn’t a great city for our marriage. I know they say L.A. has its groupies, but Miami has a different mentality. Even going to the games, the whole environment is so different. Girls are practically sitting in their bra and panties in the arena. When you’re trying to keep your husband, that’s a lot to take. It was a whole new lifestyle I wasn’t ready for. Apparently we didn’t have a strong enough foundation for Shaq to withstand that type of temptation.”

The reality show filmed by Shaquille and Shaunie O’Neal before their marriage took a decisive turn last week may find its way to at least one network still willing to give it a chance.

Earlier this year, the couple had shopped a show called “Love Shaq.” The difference between other reality romances and this couple is that those other unions were at least still in tact as the seasons aired; the O’Neal marriage has fallen apart before the show could even be sold.

A preview of the televised wedding of Lamar Odom and Khloe Kardashian has aired. Though audio was released last week of production crew members discussing the script of the ceremony, after watching this, do you think their matrimony may be real?

“AUDIO: Khloe & Lamar’s TV Wedding Script Revealed!”

Despite defending their non-legal Sunday ‘wedding’ as a real marriage, Khloe Kardashian and LA Laker Lamar Odom’s scripted ceremony has further been exposed as fake. Audio has just been released of a chat between “Keeping Up With The Kardashians” production crew members discussing how the ceremony should be arranged. They are heard debating a line from an actual script, as well as how many steps the bride should take before appearing at the beginning of the aisle.

WOMAN: And I also wanna get that Bruce and Khloe beat, where Khloe tells Bruce that she thinks…she considers him a real dad.
MAN: I think that should happen, like, literally right before they walk down the aisle, don’t you think?
WOMAN: I doubt she’s gonna be thinking that right when they walk down the aisle, but when he’s in there with her, after he walks her mom, it can happen.
MAN: Ok, sounds good.
WOMAN: Finally, when Bruce comes up for Khloe – and that’s where you can get your beat, where Khloe says that thing to Bruce – she backpedals just for, like, maybe 10 steps and then let her go because Abby’s gonna pick her coming down the line.

Khloe’s biological father Robert died in 2003.

I guess we’ll have to watch the November 8 episode of E!’s “Keeping Up With The Kardashians” to see if Khloe follows directions.

“NOOO! Flavor Flav To Return To TV”

Hip-hop hypeman-turned-ridiculous reality TV star Flavor Flav is plotting his return to the television screen. Flav told AllHipHop.com in a recent interview that he has some upcoming projects in the works.

“I’m working on a reality show and a talk show, going back to high school. I got a talk show coming, y’all ain’t going to be mad at ya boy.”

Sure, it’s vague, but it’s enough to make us want to boycott whatever series he’s about to air. He made his debut in 2004 on VH1′s “The Surreal Life,” and then went on to star alongside Brigitte Nielsen in a spin-off entitled “Strange Love.” After that, he hosted three seasons of the reality dating competition “Flavor of Love.”
