Christy Turlington Burns actively advocates to increase awareness and support for maternal and child health. She is the founder of an organization called Every Mother Counts, which aims to improve the lives of women and girls around the world. She is also the producer and director of a documentary film called No Woman, No Cry, which illustrates the stories of at-risk pregnant women from around the world. Immediately there was a lot of talk about shows such as 16 and Pregnant and Teen Mom, being responsible for, not just this case, but the rising rate of teenage pregnancy in this country. Everyone from Kim Kardashian to Roxanne Shante has voiced their opinions on the matter and their distress that MTV is glamorizing teen pregnancy. Yesterday, Rosie O’Donnell argued the other side. She said that she watches this season’s  “Teen Mom”, with her 13 year old daughter, and finds that MTV sends a definite message about the hardships of teen pregnancy and does not advocate or glamorize teen pregnancy. Now I never thought I would say this, but I agree with her.

For a start, the teen pregnancy rate has been increasing since 2006. “16 and Pregnant” was first aired in 2009. So obviously teen pregnancy was happening, and should have been a major talking point, long before MTV decided to thrust it into the public’s consciousness through the television show and made people pay attention to the bigger issue. Rosie 1, K’Dash 0.

As anyone who has ever seen the show would know, MTV make a point of showing the girls struggling with being mothers and losing their carefree teenage ways. Each commercial break finishes with a voice-over stating that teen pregnancy is 100% preventable, and directs teens to the it’s your sex life website. REF. Almost every episode ends with the girls monologue, where they all say that they wish they had waited to have sex and they aren’t ready for the tremendous responsibility that comes with having a child. Further, most of the girls find out that their ‘perfect’ relationship with their baby daddy, is not so perfect after all, and in Teen Mom, the majority of the girls are dealing with not only having a child, but doing it on their own. Not so glamorous is it? Rosie 2, K’Dash 0.

I have heard the argument that some girls are deliberately getting pregnant in an effort to get on tv and become famous. I’m sure that there are some girls who are stupid and immature enough to do that, but as the Maury Povich show has shown for years, these girls are going to be stupid and immature anyway, and it should be up to the family to try and teach them about the hardships of being a teen mother. Today I joined the Teen Mom Facebook group and from the hundreds of posts on the discussion board there are only a handful of posts even expressing interest in being on the show, and most of these were met with dismay from fellow posters. As one person wrote, ‘teen mom is the reason I am on birth control’. Therefore, if shows such as Teen Mom can help raise awareness about safe sex and pregnancy prevention for millions of girls (at last count the Teen Mom Facebook page had 3,262,902 followers), then why should the immaturity and sheer stupidityof a few jeapordise that? Rosie 3, K’Dash 0.

Blaming the media for a social problem is an easy way for politicians and even teen mothers to avoid taking responsibility for their own actions or in-actions, but it does not address the whole issue. As Terrika Sutton, the school girl from Memphis who was interviewed said, her school did not have (at the time) classes about sex education, be it abstinence education or learning about birth control, but obviously it was needed. Instead of focusing on demonizing television programs, why don’t we focus more on pressuring governments and school officials to broadening the education offered about sex and parenting at school?

I think that MTV, with such a massive audience, in the prime age bracket for learning about sex education, has the unique opportunity to be able to talk to teenagers and get throught to them much better than teachers in a classroom, or even parents can. So I can’t see the harm in shows being aired that address such big issues. In fact, I think that MTV with 16 and Pregnant and Teen Mom, has done the community a service, by opening up the debate about how to prevent teenage pregnancy and showing immature girls the reality of being a teen mom.

I have been seeing a man from Nigeria off and on for about 15 months. I am seven months pregnant by him. I have been pregnant once before by him, but I had a miscarriage early on. He was mad the first time I had gotten pregnant and told me all kinds of horrible things on the phone. Then when I miscarried he was back up in it two weeks later, raw. He told me that he had a vasectomy after the first time I got pregnant and I believed him because he has six kids from six different women and always talks about how he’s always broke because of them.

When I got pregnant again four months later he said, “I don’t want you to mother my child because you don’t have a driver’s license, high school diploma, or any of your other kids, what’s going to happen to mines?” Then why would he get me pregnant or not use protection? I always have condoms. He never wants to use them and even takes them off when we’re having sex.

I think he got me pregnant on purpose. Why would he do this to me, lie about having a vasectomy and get me pregnant on purpose? Since I’ve been pregnant he doesn’t try, and barely at all, comes to see me or anything. I recently moved to Baltimore and he lives in another part of Maryland. Ever since I’ve been pregnant he has had a million excuses about why he can’t come see me and he even asks me for money for gas, or he says he’s coming and doesn’t come at all.

I don’t know where to begin. This letter is a HOT MESS! And, you’re a HOT MESS for writing it. Okay, let me stop shaking my head my damn head because of this foolishness you’re caught up in.

First, you can’t and you won’t put this solely off on him. How the hell are you going to say he got you pregnant on purpose? And, to trap you and keep you? Girl, you playing. Please stop it. You really think he had a master plan to get you pregnant to keep you around forever? Look, you have condoms, yet, you let him take them off and have sex with you without any protection. Is he really at fault? No man, no person, no one can make you do something you don’t want to do. Girl, you liked it just as much as he did and you played the game with him and now you’re pregnant. In all honesty, I think you really wanted to get pregnant so you can keep him around. Based on the tone of your letter you sound like a woman who will go to any lengths to keep a man. I’m just saying.

Second, he told you that he had a vasectomy. You really need to go look out the window right now and see if the yellow short bus is sitting in front of your house, and if it is then you need to put on your helmet and go get on it now. You really believe for one second that after you had your first miscarriage that he hustled himself to the doctor and got a vasectomy? Girl, punch yourself in the face. He didn’t have a vasectomy. He lied to you. He bold faced lied, laid up with you with no condom because he didn’t want you to put a fight about him being able to get you pregnant. You really are slow.

Third, he has six kids with six different women. And, now you’re number seven. SEVEN!!! I can’t, I can’t, I can’t. You have unprotected sex with a man who can easily lay-up with random women with no regard for his own health or theirs.  What woman in their right man will get in the bed, let alone entertain, a man who has six kids with six different women? Never mind, don’t answer that, I already know. This man has clearly shown you who he is. He berated and belittled you (go get a dictionary and look those words up. I’ll wait) when you got pregnant the first time. He said to you he doesn’t want you as a mother to his child because you have no education, no driver’s license, and you’re unable to raise your other children. Basically he has said that you are unfit to be a mother. Yet, he doesn’t find you unfit to lay in the bed with and have unprotected sex. Both of you need to go on the side of road and kick rocks. Honey, he doesn’t care about you, or any woman. He is a womanizer, and the women who let him get away with this are desperate, lonely, and lack self-esteem. Hold up and wait a minute, girl, the man is asking you for gas money. This low-down broke trifling no good job having bum is asking you, the woman carrying his child, for gas money. I quit!

I’m wrapping this up, Ms. Pregnant With No Support, I’m not doing this with you today. You asked can a man love you and tell you this big of a lie. The answer is NO! A man who loves you will not lie to you. A man who loves you will be forthright and supportive. A man who loves you will be responsible. A man who loves you will be a man and get a job and take care of his kids, woman, and his responsibilities. The man you have does not love you. I will repeat it slowly for you, HE…DOES….NOT…LOVE…YOU!  Listen up, sweetheart, you really need to do a few things – 1.) Get into somebody’s school and further your education. It’s important for you and your child that you’re bringing into the world. Educate yourself and strengthen your mind. 2.) Leave this man alone! He doesn’t love you, want you, or need you. He isn’t worth your time or energy. 3.) Go to court and start child support proceedings. Don’t rely on him to, “do the right thing,” on his own. Got to court and get it enforced. 3.) Get into somebody’s church, spiritual group, or read some books on self-empowerment, inspiration, and encouragement. You’ve got to do better in your life, and the only way to do that is to build up your self-esteem and know your self-worth. If you desire to be and do better, then you’ve got to take a long look in the mirror and do a lot of self-inspection. You are in this situation because you have allowed yourself to be here. You don’t know who you are and what your value is. No woman, and I mean no woman, would knowingly lay up with a man, with no condom, who has six kids with six different women. That says a lot about YOU and HIM! Ask yourself, “Why did I attract him into my life? What is he bringing to the table? Why do I feel I need to be in this situation? Here’s what Ne-Yo told Ebony:

EBONY sat down with the singer-songwriter at a super exclusive photoshoot planned to help promote his upcoming album Libra Scale. Ne-Yo, who is preparing to attend the ASCAP Awards Friday night in Beverly Hills, talked about how he had traveled home to Atlanta to get some news about the baby.

Surprise! He had to come home so he could make the first ultrasound visit with his girlfriend. There’s no word on the sex of the baby because the tiny tot curled up in a ball, leading Ne-Yo to joke that his future progeny is “stubborn.” But, he added, “They didn’t get that one from me.”

“I am 30 and I do have my first child on the way, and I’m very, very, very excited about that,” he tells EBONY. “It’s a New Year’s baby and I’m just in a really good place right now.”

There’s also the rumor that Ne-Yo and Monyetta are engaged, which he did not confirm.

Ne-Yo has experience in being a dad as he previously took care of his ex-girlfriend’s baby boy as if he were his own, despite him not being the biological father.

FROM PEOPLE: Despite the joys of fatherhood, actor Taye Diggs is leaving it up to wife Idina Menzel as to whether there will be a baby number two.

“I was in the room when my wife gave birth to Walker [Nathaniel], and after seeing that and going through the nine months of pregnancy with her, I would never ask,” says the first-time dad, who welcomed his son in September.

“I would never ask her for another child. If she wants to give me one because she wants to, I’m perfectly fine with that. I came from a large family, and I would love Walker to have some siblings.”

Quick not to rule out anything, Diggs, 39, says,

“There’s also the idea of adoption. So we’ll see. It’s basically up to her. She’s the boss. It’s her body.”

For now, he’s relishing his role as Dad, and is already seeing glimpses of himself in 8-month-old Walker.

“He’s like his daddy. He likes the sweet things: pears and apples.”

Right now, Diggs’s favorite daddy and son activity is spending guy time alone.

“I have to get permission from the mom, and once she writes off on it, it’s cool,” he jokes. Just two weeks ago, the pair spent a day at the park, where he took his son on the swing and fed him lunch. “It was a big day for us,” Diggs recalls. “I put him in the car seat all by myself!”

UPDATE: The internet was popping with rumors yesterday when TheYBF.com announced that Usher and his girlfriend Grace Miguel were not only engaged, but also expecting their first child together.

Usher’s rep is telling a different story, saying “There is absolutely no truth to it.”

FROM THEYBF: Though Usher and Tameka Foster officially divorced in November, they were still legally married (and together) when Usher started dating former Def Jam exec Grace Miguel. And Usher is clearly continuing his pattern of quickly marrying an older woman and getting her impregnated at rapid speed.

Over the weekend, Usher was caught in Atlanta’s Piedmont Park with his two sons, Naviyd and “Cinco,” and Grace. When the two were asked to pose for a picture, they both turned and moved very quickly from the cameras. Still, the pic (above) was snapped from behind (Grace on the far left, Usher and the kids on the right).

It’s been said that Grace is about 3 months along and not showing much yet. But she will be soon, in case Usher predictably tries to deny our story. It’s well known throughout Usher’s circle that Grace is expecting, but folks for some reason are not speaking about it.

Actress and Lil Wayne’s baby mama Lauren London recently sat down with Access Hollywood and discussed motherhood, her son Cameron and the drama surrounding her pregnancy. Here are a few excerpts:

On Motherhood and Lil Wayne as a father:

Mother hood has changed me alot. I’ve definitely calmed down. I had a temper in the past and I don’t as much anymore. My son definitely puts stuff in perspective. the things I thought were really really important, aren’t. I don’t look at the surface as much anymore. A lot of things I was doing before were really selfish and now it’s not about me. It’s about him.

I’m blessed that I am not parenting him alone. I have help and I get to do what i love. Wayne is a great dad. He’s a great father. I have no complaints!

On tweeting & being hurt by things people had to say:

“I don’t feel pressured to tweet or share my business because I feel like my personal life is my personal life. They talked about me so bad during my pregnancy at this point, what can they say. Go ahead. It [was tough], I’m not going to lie. When a woman is pregnant to me it’s her most beautiful and as pure as she can be and I felt like they took everything away from me. At some point it did hurt my feelings and I had to let it go because it was distracting me from what God had me doing. Point. Blank. Period. I love my baby!

Although it had long been considered the stuff of old wives tales and legend, using ginger as a remedy to treat morning sickness is rapidly earning a new respect.

90 percent of pregnant women have “morning” sickness. In studies published in the April 2004 issue of the journal Obstetrics and Gynecology, doctors from the University of Adelaide in Australia proved once again this natural remedy is an extremely effective treatment for the nausea and vomiting that affects up to 90 percent of all pregnant women, usually in their first trimester.

If, however, you’ve tried ginger and it just doesn’t seem to help you, skip the gingerale and gingersnaps, and go for the “real stuff” instead.

There is some research to show that it is the properties found in natural, fresh ginger that makes this a truly effective treatment — so when possible, buy some fresh ginger root and use to make a tea, or sprinkle it on your cereal or a bowl of fresh fruit.

If, in fact, ginger just isn’t your “cup of tea,” here are six more “natural” ways to beat morning sickness.

1. Switch prenatal vitamins or the time you take them. The high iron content can induce nausea in many pregnant women. Switching to a low-iron formula in the first trimester only (when the risk of anemia is very low) may squelch morning sickness. Also, take your vitamins late in the day, and skip the glass of water. Instead swallow your vitamin in a spoonful of pudding or apple sauce.

2. Limit fluid intake with meals. Instead, drink between meals — and try other tummy-soothing beverages such as peppermint iced tea or chamomile hot tea.

3. Massage your pressure points by applying pressure on what Chinese medicine experts call the P6 Nei Guan nerve located in the wrist. To stimulate this anti-nausea nerve use two fingers from your left hand to press the underside of your right arm two inches above your wrist. Hold for up to 60 seconds and repeat as needed.

4. Rise and shine . . . slowly. Whether it’s getting up in the morning or after a nap, rising too quickly can throw off equilibrium and contribute to the queasies.

Model-turned-designer Kimora Lee is eager to expand her family with actor boyfriend Djimon Hounsou, insisting the couple is planning to have a second child.

The Baby Phat designer welcomed her first little boy, Kenzo, with the Oscar-nominated actor in May 2009, and now she wants another baby boy.

Lee also shares two daughters, Ming, ten, and Aoki, seven, with her ex-husband, Def Jam Records co-founder Russell Simmons – who she divorced in January 2009 after 10 years of marriage.

But the fashion mogul insists she wants to keep building her new family and can juggle a fourth child.

Pre six-week check

Most countries have a post natal check at six weeks to assess whether the woman can get back to normal activities, including exercise. But do you have to wait until then? Well, as long as you don’t have any complications here’s what you CAN do. (including cesarean section births)

From day one:

Exercise 1: Pelvic floor

Fast and slow pelvic floor lifts not only regain bladder control of this stretched and bruised area, but also promote circulation (which will help ease swelling) and begin to tone the deep abdominal muscles that work in conjunction with the pelvic floor.

What to do:

Each time you feed the baby or change a diaper, draw up your pelvic floor as fast as you can 10 times then release. It should feel like you are stopping yourself from urinating. Aim for a maximum contraction. Even if you can’t feel anything at first, keep going and visualize the area contracting. It will come back and you will soon start to feel it. The great thing about this move is that in the early days post birth, your uterus can contract quite strongly when you feed, which makes it easier to develop awareness of feelings low down.

Just weeks after Kourtney Kardashian gave birth to son Mason Disick, sister Khloe is hinting that she’s trying to have a baby, too.

People is reporting that when asked about becoming a mother on a Wednesday radio interview for 104.3 MY FM’s Valentine in the Morning, Khloe responded with:

“I want to so badly! That’s a goal for me.” She then qualifies: “I’m 25. I’m not rushing it.”
