‘The Blind Side’ may have earned several Academy Award nominations and a Best Actress win for Sandra Bullock this past weekend, but Vanessa Williams is clearly no fan of the movie. Williams said on ‘The View’ that the film, which depicts a homeless African-American youngster who is adopted by an affluent white family, does little to improve race relations.

Williams argued that film only reinforces the notion that African-Americans need whites in order to succeed.

The cast for Lee Daniels‘ next film, Selma, is really starting to shape up. A while back there was rumor that Robert De Niro would be on board as Alabama governor George Wallace, and that news was confirmed by Movieline. Daniels now also has Hugh Jackman in the cast (announced last week) and, seemingly, Lenny Kravitz, who did good work in “Precious.”

The film is said to largely center around the relationship between Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. and President Lyndon Johnson. Beyond the core relationship between King and Johnson, the film also features the voting rights and desegregation campaigns and civil rights marches that centered in Selma, Alabama in the mid-’60s.

While talking to E! last night before the Oscars, Kravitz said he’d been cast in Selma, as civil rights activist Andrew Young. An Alabama pastor in the late ’50s, Young encouraged African-Americans to register to vote and became a friend of Dr. King. He moved to New York, but returned to the South during the Civil Rights Movement, during which he was jailed for taking part in demonstrations. This could be a relatively large role for Kravitz, depending on how Daniels is arranging Selma. READ MORE HERE!

The actress said that her winning the Golden Globe will raise more awareness to the prevalence of child abuse:

“I think for so long we have swept it under the carpet. For so long, when it is time to deal with that issue, and when it is time to deal with molestation inside the home, we walk away from it and we don’t address it,” she said backstage. “So, oftentimes we live [with] those demons and are not really dealing with it. So we continue to have a damaged life, and it is time to stop that. It is time for us to heal and be survivors and no longer be victims.”

The Globe Globes are one of the most prestigious awards in Hollywood and often considered an indicator of the Academy Awards. The Golden Globes will be presented Jan. 17 in Los Angeles.

“Precious” Star Gabourey Sidibe Appears On “GMA”

When Mo’Nique, the funny woman with the larger-than-life sense of humor, took on the role of an abusive mother in the film “Precious: Based on the Novel Push By Sapphire,” the actress set her current contentment aside and recalled a much harder time in her life. In this week’s issue of PEOPLE, Mo’Nique opens up about the sexual abuse she allegedly suffered at the hands of her eldest brother – and how she channeled that experience onscreen.

“Coming from being molested as a child, when [director Lee Daniels] said, ‘I need you to be this monster,’ well [I] knew who that monster was,” she says.

In the October 2008 issue of Essence, Mo’Nique revealed:

“I was molested by my older brother. And even when I confronted him and told my parents, he said I was lying, and nothing was really done.”

He often used candy to lure her into the bathroom, where much of the abuse took place, beginning when Mo’Nique was just seven. Her parents never believed her.

“…Because me and my brother were both their children, and I just don’t know the kind of position they felt they were in. My father was very upset, but it never got mentioned again. I’ll never forget my mother saying, ‘If it’s true, it will surface again,’ and I remember thinking, ‘Why would I lie? Why is there even an ‘if’ in this?’ I was angry with them for so long, because I felt as if they should have seen what was happening.”“My brother was a monster to me.”

Her brother went on to serve 15 years in prison for sexually abusing another girl and has never apologized for Mo’Nique’s sexual abuse.

“He still acts like he doesn’t know what I’m talking about. So screw hurting your feelings. You need to get your feelings hurt, and you need to get some help.”

Keri Hilson Squashes Rumors of Beef With Mo’Nique

Mary J. Blige recently broke down the process of writing “I Can See in Color,” her original, sure-to-be award-contending song from “Precious: Based on the Novel ‘Push.” Speaking at an industry conference in Beverly Hills, Blige discussed how channeling the film’s difficult subject matter resulted in a sometimes grueling recording process.

“I was damaged, in a good way,” Blige said of writing and recording the song.

The soundtrack will be available online November 3rd and in stores November 23rd.  It was produced by Daniels along with Mary J. Blige, whose new song “I Can See In Color” will be the first single. The track has already garnered raves, with Rolling Stone extolling it as “a knockout song. expressing the goal of Precious to see the world in color.”  Other artists featured on the star-studded soundtrack include Queen Latifah, Mahalia Jackson and Grace Hightower.  According to Daniels, these artists were selected because they “resonate not only in Precious’ world, but speak to your soul no matter who you are.”

Mariah Carey’s look in the film “Precious” — bad hair, dowdy clothes, even a faint mustache — is as far from fabulous as she’s ever been.

Here’s what the singer, known for the over-the-top glamour, had to say:

“It wasn’t just de-glamorized. They added some hideousness on top of that too. I drank some ugly juice. I couldn’t even look in the mirror! It was tough.”

Mariah turned up on set for her first day with a collection of extravagant hair pieces and cosmetics only to be informed she wouldn’t be needing them for the film. “I brought in all my wigs for the character, and Lee was like, ‘No. This is not happening.’ It really brought up what everyone was going through was not about that.”

Gabourey Sidibe, Precious’ young star, told Us in Toronto that Carey “hated” her time in the makeup truck. “She hated her wardrobe! It was the funniest thing. Like the first day of school or something, where you’re not wearing the right socks and the whole outfit’s ruined.

Gabourey Sidibe, the star of the critically acclaimed film “Precious,” appeared on “Good Morning America.” The breakout star sat down with Good Morning America host Robin Roberts and revealed that she hasn’t even acted before. This is her first role! She is 26 and a college student.

Filmmaker Tyler Perry, who is promoting his new movie “Precious” a film about an abused teenager, has decided to go public with brutal memories of his own childhood beatings and molestation. According to the NY Daily News, in an email to fans, Perry cites various examples of terrible childhood mistreatment – from his father beating him senseless to a neighbor woman molesting him at age 10.

I’m tired of holding this in. I don’t know what to do with it anymore, so, I’ve decided to give some of it away…

Memories at 40: Not long ago, I was asked to speak at an engagement. I walked in and I was told that they had assigned a person to take care of me while I was there. She walked up to me, all of 5’2″ of her, and asked if I needed anything. I looked at her and started to sweat. It took me back thirty-something years to her apartment. I couldn’t have been more than 10 years old when I went over to play with her son and Matchbox cars.

She opened the door in skimpy lingerie. There was a man sitting on the couch, smoking. She told me that her son was in the bedroom. I was there playing with him about 20 minutes when I heard the man arguing with her. He said he was leaving and slammed the door. She came into the bedroom and told me that I had to go home. She told her son to take a bath and she locked him in the bathroom. I was at the front door trying to get out, when she came in and laid on the sofa and asked me if I wanted the key. I told her I had to go home as it was getting dark. She put the key inside of herself and told me to come get it, pulling me on top of her.

So he would buy them and put them on top of the fridge and when I would eat them he would beat me mercilessly.

My mother was out one night, as she loved to play bingo, and my father came home…mad at the world. He was drunk, as he was most of the time. He got the vacuum cleaner extension cord and trapped me in a room and beat me until the skin was coming off my back. To this day, I don’t know what would make a person do something like that to a child. But thank God that in my mind, I left. I didn’t feel it anymore, just like in PRECIOUS. How this girl would leave in her mind. I learned to use my gift, as it was my imagination that let me escape. After he was done with his rant he passed out. Since my aunt lived two doors down, I ran to her. She saw me and was horrified. She loaded her 357 and went to kill him. Holding a gun to his head, her husband came and stopped her.

Memories at 40: I got a call not long ago from a friend. He told me that a man that I knew from church when I was a kid had died and he didn’t have any insurance. His family was trying to reach out to me to see if I would pay for his funeral. I quickly said no, but I wish I would have said yes.

There is something so powerful to me in burying the man that molested me.

I wish I would have dug the grave myself.

Memories at 40: I was about 8 or 9 years old. I had a crush on a little girl across the street. She would come over to my house and we’d play. She was about 12 or 13. One day she stopped coming and when I asked her why, she told me that my father was touching her. I didn’t believe her, so I talked her into staying one night. We were both asleep — she was in one bed and I was in another. I opened my eyes to see my father trying to touch her and her pushing him away. I moved in my bed trying to make him think I was waking up. He looked over at me and left out of the room. Not long after that, he beat me mercilessly for something again. Another mind game set up, so I told my mother what he had done. The blood drained from her face. We left that day. We were at my Aunt’s house and he came there about 1am. Not long after that we were back at home. Nothing would compare to the random, drunken, violent beatings I would receive from then until I was 19.

Memories at 40: We would spend the summers in the country, with my father’s adoptive mother. As a kid I was always sick. I had asthma and he hated it. He hated that I wasn’t strong and viral like him. He hated that I couldn’t be in the sawdust, pollen and the raw lumber like him. He hated that I liked to read and write and draw. He hated that me and my middle sister were darker-skinned than him. He didn’t think he could make a dark baby. He just hated everything about me I guess. Anyway, I had to go to the doctor every Tuesday to get shots to control my allergies. When his mother found out she said, “Ain’t nothing wrong with that damn boy…he just got germs on him. Stop wasting all that money.” When my mother left to visit some friends I heard what sounded like water running in a tub but it was sporadic. She came and got me out of the living room leaving my Matchbox cars on the floor. She said she was going to kill these germs on me once and for all. She gave me a bath in ammonia.

Grateful at 40: I was asked recently how I made it through all of this, (half has not even been told) and my answer to that is…I know for a fact that there is a GOD. When my father would say or do those things to me, I would hear this voice inside of me say, “That’s not true” or, “Don’t believe that” or, “You’re going to make it through this”. I didn’t know at the time what “it” was, but today I surely have no doubt that “it” was GOD. That voice always gave me comfort. It allowed me to hold on. It kept me from being strung out on drugs, from dying when I wanted to commit suicide. It kept me from being a gang banger or drug dealer. Worse than all of those things put together, it kept me from being him. It brought angels to comfort me after every foul, harsh word or every welt on my legs or back. GOD, only GOD.

Contrary to the rumors, I did not quit. Mo’Nique is one of the most talented actors in hollywood. It was an honor to work with her and to get to know her as a human being. She’s at a point in her life where her achievements should be heralded.

Mo’Nique Is First Black Female Late-Night Host

Monique has been subject of serious side eyes ever since she refused to do any promo for the film Precious based on the novel “Push” by Sapphire unless she was paid. According to the NY Daily News, as expected Monique was a no-show for the Friday night premiere in NY, but everybody else was there. By all accounts this is Monique’s break-out role and could even earn her an Oscar, but according to her big mouth pal, Monique says, “When people say, ‘You care more about money than winning an Oscar,’ well, what does an Oscar mean? An Oscar means more work when you win it, and that means more money! I couldn’t eat that Oscar. Everybody needs money, baby. That’s how we survive, right?”

Unfortunately for her, those in the know say the film’s producers, Oprah Winfrey and Tyler Perry have instructed the studio stop campaigning for Monique and instead put their Oscar efforts behind Mariah Carey.

Monique may want to lose the attitude…After promising she’d be there, BET talk show host and comedienne Mo’Nique will not be attending Saturday’s New York Film Festival premiere of “Precious.” And her publicist of two weeks has just quit as well. According to Roger Friedman of The Hollywood Reporter, Mo’Nique has “a reputation for demanding money for showing up” to promote the film.

Allegedly even her publicist Tresa Sanders — whose experience includes Mary J. Blige and other hip hop divas — couldn’t take the actress’ demands and quit right after announcing her client wouldn’t be making it to the film festival.

When ‘Precious’ first debuted, insiders buzzed about her performance — stating she’d likely get an Oscar nomination for her role as Mary in the film.

First Mariah Carey and now Mo’Nique, the stars of the film Precious are all being talked about with the word “Oscar” in the same sentence. Here’s the story what people are saying about Mo’Nique’s role in the film (from eurweb.com):

According to the New York Post’s Page Six, Dick Cavett, Ben Bradlee and Sally Quinn, Bob Balaban and Joel Schumacher saw the film over the holiday weekend in East Hampton, and emerged in awe of the performance by Mo’Nique.

“She doesn’t steal the film — she kicks, screams and pummels it into an Oscar no-brainer,” Forbes.com media critic Bill McCuddy told Page Six.

The filmed, backed by Oprah Winfrey and Tyler Perry, has already earned raves at Cannes and Sundance, and Mariah Carey has even received praise for her makeup-free role.

Said McCuddy: “If Oprah can get Barack [Obama] elected, she can get Mo’Nique either a Best Supporting Oscar or a Cabinet post.”

Mariah Carey can thank her lucky stars because it looks like Hollywood is giving her a reprieve for her earlier disastrous film roles in Glitter and Wise Girls.

Her moment of regained glory comes in the upcoming film entitled Precious, co-produced by two entertainment powerhouses, Oprah and Tyler Perry.  I assume that with that kind of backing, it would be pretty hard to fail.

In Precious, a film based on the novel Push by Sapphire, Carey takes on a supporting role as social worker to the film’s main character and namesake.  Precious, who is played and mastered by debut actress Gabourey Sidibe, is a morbidly obese, troubled teen dealing with various types of abuse which culminates with her being raped and impregnated for the second time by her own father.  This incestuous sexual abuse is compounded by the mental and verbal abuse that Precious faces from her mother (played by Mo’nique) who is quite aware of what is happening in her household, but is too desperate to keep her husband to do anything in opposition to his actions; instead she takes her frustrations out on Precious, who despite it all finds the determination to fight her way through the struggle with the help of an involved teacher (played by Paula Patton) and Carey’s character.

Carey, tackles her role with surprising intensity, appearing both believable and sincere and apparently the critics have picked up on it.  Specifically, Entertainment Weekly’s Oscar watchers Dave Karger and Missy Schwartz have marked the film as one to watch for in the upcoming 2010 Academy Awards, and expect Carey to be an Oscar contender.

We applaud Carey on her accomplishments and contributions to this film, as well as her ability to function without her globs of makeup and I’m-perfect swag for long enough to film all of her scenes.  Who knew those sunglasses even came off?

Just when I was about to clown the fact that Mariah Carey is in a new movie (if you’ve seen Glitter, you know what I mean), I watched the trailer for Precious and completely changed my mind.

The movie, based on the book Push by Sapphire, stars newcomer Gabby Sidibe as a young girl trying to find confidence and strength in a tumultuous environment. Mariah stars as a guidance counselor, comedian Mo’Nique plays a serious role as the girl’s abusive mother, and Paula Patton and others are also mixed into the cast.

Though I haven’t read the book, the movie looks riveting. Can’t wait til it’s out! Check out the trailer below.
