I had never met him before and he called me sometime after that and said that he was initially afraid that I’d be upset about it because he wasn’t sure how I took it, but I thought it was sweet. He’s really nice. Word for word, he’s an incredible rapper. I’ve always been a fan and that line is a really dope line. We’re going to do some music together.

Kelis On Nas: We’re Friendly “Sometimes”

The Nas and Kelis divorce drama continues…It looks like spousal support is not the most pressing problem for Nas.  According to TMZ, the rapper is having problems making the monthly mortgage for the home Kelis is living in. Nas is behind $52,989.22.

So Nas’ lawyer, Mark Vincent Kaplan, filed a payment plan with the court, in which the rapper agrees to pay $17,500 up front, and then pretty much double the $7,800 mortgage payment each month to catch up.

According to the docs, the plan is to sell the home stat.

During the birth of a child, women undergo some of the most excruciating pain that they ever experience in their lifetime. It is understandable that during this time she would need to be in a peaceful mind state without any distractions that might upset her. So, if for some reason or another, the father of the child and the mother are not getting along or are on the verge of splitting up, his presence might not sit well with the mother.  Because of this the first reaction is to of course side with the mother. Allow me to play devil’s advocate for a moment.

What about the fathers needs? Should he have a right to be in the room to see the birth of his child? Do the mothers needs at the time outweigh his?   Some might argue that a man has as much of a right to build a bond with the child from the moment it comes into the world as the woman does and that any woman who does not allow that is being selfish. Especially since there are many single mothers who complain about the father of their children not desiring a relationship with their child.

Some say assume that the mother preventing the father from being in the delivery room during the birth might be a prerequisite for how the mother will be in regards to the father visiting the child and being able to bond with him in the future. An example of this would be how Nas now claims that him visiting his son is hell.  Insinuating that his now ex wife Kelis does not allow him to see the child as often as he would like.

With that being said, I direct these questions to you. Does a father have a right to be in the delivery room even if the wife insists that he is not? What if the couple is separated? Should their personal issues be put to the side for the sake of the child’s happiness? Or are the needs of the woman during the labor more important?

Since the news of Nas and Kelis’s divorce women have been rallying around Kelis and her astronomical demands for spousal and child support. As of right now she is said to be receiving over $40,000 a month in child and spousal support combined. Women everywhere are celebrating. Almost every blog that mentioned this was littered with comments from women saying “Yeah, that such-and-such better pay what he owes her.” While men were on the complete opposite side of the spectrum saying comments like, “Hiring an assassin to off Kelis would make more sense than paying her a ridiculous amount of money like that.”

I always fell somewhere in the middle, thinking that she does deserve to receive a settlement but the amount is way too much for a newborn child and a woman who can still go out and make her own money as well.

With that being said, I wonder would the same women who celebrated Kelis victory over Nas have the same to say if the situation was reversed. What if Kelis was the more popular and financially stable artist in the relationship and Nas wanted support from her? All hell would break loose. I guarantee that a double standard is in play here.

It is not like this situation has not happened before. Both of Halle Berry’s ex-husbands, Derek Jeter and Eric Benet, requested spousal support from Berry. Benet wanted her to pay his legal fees. Women all around the world were on Berry’s side and shouted from the heavens that Benet and Jeter were not “real men” because they were seeking money from a woman.

Then there was Jessica Simpson and Nick Lachey who were married very young. He too sought spousal support from his more successful wife Jessica.

Hardy Boy Parker Stevenson sought $18,000 per month from actress Kristie Alley when they divorced, just to cover the rent on his Bel Air home.

I am throwing these examples at you because I want us to consider our own ideologies. Most women I know would be in support of a woman receiving a large settlement from a man in a divorce. But not so thrilled with the opposite. Why? Just as he can take care of himself so can she, right? Why do we adhere to this particular double standard? Aren’t Kelis and other women who received spousal support grown and capable individuals, as well?

I find myself having to question this pattern in society because I, too, have been known to lean towards the woman receiving a settlemen,t but annoyed with even the thought of the man asking for any money at all from his soon-to-be ex-wife. Why do we subscribe to this ideology that a man should still be financially responsible for his wife after marriage, but not the opposite? Perhaps back in the day when more women were homemakers and did not have careers of their own, this made more sense. However, this is no longer the case. Women have the same opportunities to have successful careers as men.

Discussion: Would you support Nas requesting spousal support from Kelis? Would he be less of a man if he did? Is she less of a woman for seeking support from him? Where do we draw the lines?

According to documents filed last week, Kelis said in a declaration, “… it would be in the best interest of both of us if our marital status is terminated as soon as possible.”

Because she fears that the legal proceedings could take years to figure out, Kelis has requested that the judge immediately terminate their marriage — and wait until a later time to resolve “all other issues.

As for the odds that the two will rekindle their romance — Kelis stated, “I believe their is no possibility of reconciliation with [Nas].”

I can see why Kelis is trying to speed things up, as she’s now dating football player Wale Ogunleye.

A spokesman for Nas confirmed to MTV that he was given some leeway in their court proceedings. The spokesman says that the charge was dismissed and that Kelis’ attorney fees and spousal support payments have been taken care of.

“The contempt charges that were filed against Nas earlier this year in conjunction with his ongoing custody battle were thrown out yesterday by Judge David Cunningham III presiding over the case. Nas has paid all of the child support owed in full. His legal counsel today also settled on additional undisclosed financial terms, which included attorneys’ fees and spousal support.”

Nas also  released a statement of his own saying that he just wants to move on.

“All I want to do is make music and raise my kids. Nothing else matters.”

Nas has a daughter from a previous relationship.

Kelis owes $5,000 for non-payment of weave

Nas appeared in court yesterday over his divorce with Kelis — and walked out a little lighter in the wallet.

According to documents filed in L.A. County Superior Court, Nas had to immediately fork over $47,249.42 in back child support and $40,454 in back spousal support.

The judge also ordered Nas to pay $10,000/month in spousal support until he pays off the $299,015.50 he owes Kelis.

Nas also has to pay 90% of Kelis’ legal fees in the amount of $155,787.28.

TMZ is reporting that Nas has been sending Kelis emails telling her that he wants her back and telling her where she can fly to hook up with him. However, Kelis has apparently moved on and has a new boyfriend.

Last week, a judge ordered Nas to pay Kelis $200,000 in back child and spousal support. Sources say Nas is clueless he’s going under financially and doesn’t understand he can go to jail if he doesn’t pay child support.

As you all know, he was ordered to pay Kelis over $50k a month in child and spousal support last year and hasn’t been able to keep up with the payments. Even though Nas pleaded Not Guilty he could face jail time if convicted.

Meanwhile, Nas went in on a new song about his child support situation and Kelis’s alleged affairs in a new song titled “Strong Will Continue”:

Now how did this happen without setting off a problem? Recently divorced couple Nas and Kelis played rival gigs on either side of Main Street in Park City, Utah at the Sundance Festival over the weekend and not once did they come in close contact.

According to the NY Post, Nas performed at Harry O’s, while Kelis followed John Legend at the Film Lounge at House of Hype. Kelis waited until Nas’ performance was over before starting her set. “She didn’t want to compete against her ex,” an insider said. Kelis did a soulful turn, including a Madonna-infused remix of her song “Milkshake.”

According to legal papers, Nas has refused to pay any child support at all since December 1st.

TMZ has obtained Kelis’ legal docs asking the judge to haul Nas into court and ask him why he shouldn’t be held in contempt of court. According to Kelis’ lawyer, Laura Wasser, Nas is behind in child and spousal support to the tune of $56,911.50.
