Still, she is also gracious enough to say that as she’s gotten a bit older, she exercises and watches her diet. “For me, carbs are a treat now.” She’s vigilant about her beauty routine too: steams, facials — “everything I can to keep my skin elasticated,” she laughs. She says plastic surgery is fine “for those who do it for themselves and not to please someone else,” but she isn’t fazed about getting older. “I don’t worry about a number. I’m fine with aging.” She looks fantastic, though we can’t chalk it all up to good genes and facials. There is clarity behind her green contact lenses, and she seems more in control than ever. Here’s what Naomi had to say about the Spring/Summer 2012 collection:

Jeans are the heart of the collection. Do you wear them in your free time?
Absolutely. I’ve got so many pairs: jeans are perfect for travelling – you can wear them with a pair of trainers or flip-flops if you want comfort or heels if you want to look sexy. Jeans are like pasta – basic, but you can interpret them differently each time and play with the accessories.

What inspired you when you were creating this mini-collection?
I thought about what would enhance women. I’ve a lot of jeans, as I’ve said, but it’s difficult to find ones that fit perfectly, so I always wear the same ones. For the capsule collection, I thought about what I liked and what I didn’t like. So no low pockets – it’s better to have them higher so they have almost a push-up effect. And then there are washes, which are very special.

Supermodel Naomi Campbell was very offended, and stated “I am shocked. It’s upsetting to be described as chocolate, not just for me, but for all black women and black people. I do not find any humor in this. It is insulting and hurtful.” We learned from Popeater.com that she even threatened to sue the company after the ad appeared in U.K’s newspapers last month.

In order to avoid a lawsuit, Cadbury has stopped putting the ads in newspapers and even issued Naomi a formal apology on their website.

“Cadbury understands that our latest advertising campaign for ‘Cadbury Dairy Milk Bliss’ caused upset to Naomi Campbell and her family. Cadbury takes its responsibility to consumers very seriously indeed and we would never deliberately produce any marketing material we felt might cause offence to any section of society. It was not our intention that this campaign should offend Naomi, her family or anybody else and we are sincerely sorry that it has done so. We can confirm that the advertisement is no longer in circulation and we will not be using it in future marketing…..”

The model, who once bashed the belief system, says she has been in and out of Kabbalah for years.

She told Interview magazine,

“What you can change is yourself and the type of energy you put into yourself. That you can change.

I study Kabbalah because it takes me to a positive, calm place. That’s what I use it for, and it helps me a lot…I’ve been in and out of Kabbalah since around 2000.

It’s just something I have taken more seriously (recently). I’ve been practicing. I don’t know if I’ve been pronouncing everything right, but I’ve been practicing.”

But life as a black women in Europe is certainly not easy. Black European women, like many minority groups there, continue to be marginalized as a result of gender and race, albeit in ways that are different to those that a sister faces in America.

Europe is also currently dealing with a serious social backlash towards illegal immigration including from Africa’s Sub-Sahara. Many immigrant risk their lives to enter Europe via the Mediterranean Sea, some of whom have died or have been deported in the process.

Legal or not, there is a notable presence of recently arrived African immigrants in Europe who bring with them traditional styles of dress, cuisine and music. Access to these traditions is made easy, depending on the time of year you’re in Europe, through cultural festivals celebrating traditional African customs.

For those beautiful, black European women born in the continent we can only assume that many suffer from a clash of identities as a result of belonging to a visibly different minority group in Europe yet having been born, raised and educated there (so we invite all European members of black planet to share with us their experiences in being black and European.)

But let’s not forget to celebrate! Europe has produced some admirable and frankly gorgeous women to be proud of. If you want fashion you have the incomparable runway diva Naomi Campbell and more recently French sister, Noémie Lenoir. Musically, there’s Estelle, Alexandra Burke and the countless British pop groups featuring those soulful European voices (think Liberty X and Spice Girls). European governments are also beginning to see the arrival more and more black representatives in relation to the growth of the black community in Europe.
