Your Guide To Wearing Nude Makeup

I’m not a big fan of nail designs and trendy styles that have over-saturated the fashion and style scene. But Newsprint nails are fresh and funky and still a big enough secret.

First, be sure to wash your hands thoroughly and make sure your nails are clean and natural oil-free.

Newsprint Nail Ingredients:

- Rubbing alcohol
- Clear Base/Topcoat polish
- Light Nail Polish (preferably White)
- Black and White print Newspaper

FIRST- Put one layer of a base coat and one layer of the white. It’s recommended to use a light color, preferably white or grey (the newspaper will leave a faint grey film on your nail, so white is ideal). In this case, I used Essie’s Marshmallow #63.

It’s important that nails dry completely, so instead of putting the second coat on a half-dry first coat, it’s better to wait until the first coat is 100% dry.  After 2 completely dry coats of white, your nails should be all and even and complete shade of white.

To test if your nails are completely dry, tap them against one another; if you feel a sticky hesitation when pulling them apart, they need more time. You want them to be able to tap and rub together without friction or messing up the polish.

NEXT-  Take a strip of newspaper. Make sure you have an area with just words, no gaps or paragraph breaks and be weary that you’re not about to place vulgarities or degrading words on your nails. I read where someone accidentally printed the word ‘rape’ on her nail. So watch out!

Dip your nail in rubbing alcohol then place the newspaper strip over your entire nail. For complete coverage, I took an alcohol-dampened cotton ball and firmly pressed the newspaper strip to my nail. Hold down in a steady position for about 10-15 seconds.

Remember those water activated tattoos when you were younger? It works just like that, don’t move it around or it will smudge, don’t remove to soon or it won’t all take, and don’t leave any corners dry or it won’t activate.

FINALLY- Once you remove the newspaper strip and you’re happy with the results, put a clear and shiny topcoat polish on to protect the news ink. If you’re not satisfied with the outcome, immediately rub the ink off with your finger and try again. If your nails were completely dry before applying the paper, this shouldn’t affect your polish.

HOW TO APPLY
1. Gently ease cuticle back and remove any nail polish.
2. Shape and file the nail edge.
3. Gently remove surface shine using a nail buffer or a smooth nail file.
4. Select Nail Rock Wrap nearest your Cuticle size. These can be trimmed to fit if needed.
5. Do not touch the adhesive side of the wrap that will be used on your nail.
6. Gently place at cuticle edge and apply heat from a small or travel hairdryer for a few seconds until the wrap begins to soften.
7. Applying firm pressure, push the wrap onto one side of the nail bed. Re-apply heat and repeat on the other side.
8. Re-apply heat and push firmly over the entire nail for a secure fit. If there is a crease; re-heat, gently lift the wrap off the nail and reapply adding further heat if necessary.
9. File off excess wrap at the end of the nail in a downward motion with a fine wooden file.

1. Apply heat and peel off gently.
2. Nail polish remover may be needed to remove excess adhesive off the nail bed.

Love getting a manicure only to have it chip hours after its done?  With the right tools and products, your nails can look just as great as the ones you pay for on a weekly basis.

Here are some tips on how to do-it-yourself at home:

1)  Remove any old polish. After the polish is removed, clip the nails straight across, slightly above the skin.

2) Next, file nails straight across, rounding slightly on the corners. File from the outside to the center of the nail to prevent tearing and grinding away at the nail.

3) After filing, apply cuticle remover on the cuticles, and then soak fingers in warm soapy water for a few minutes. Avoid letting them soak long because if the nail is too saturated, it can make the nail soft, making it harder to apply polish. If nails are yellow or stained from constant use of polish, add a teaspoon of hydrogen peroxide or lemon juice to the water.

4) When the nails are done soaking, use an orangewood stick wrapped in cotton to gently push back cuticles from the nails. With cuticle nippers, trim hangnails and avoid cutting the cuticle to prevent infection. Massage hands with a hand or body scrub, and then rinse and apply hand cream. Add cuticle oil to the cuticles and massage to allow the oil to soak in. After moisturizing, clean the nails of oil by using a cotton ball with polish remover to prepare nails for paint.

5) Painting the nails. Apply a base coat to nails, starting with the pinkie finger to prevent smudges while painting. After letting the base coat dry, apply the first coat of color polish. For an even amount of polish on each nail, use three strokes of the brush, the first one down the center and then one on each side from the bottom of the nail up to the top.

6) After the first coat is dry, the final step to the manicure is applying a second coat. By painting to the tip of the nail and slightly over, it can prolong the life of the manicure and prevent chipping. Use a small brush with remover to clean up any spots where the polish got onto the skin. Apply a clear topcoat and allow nails to dry.

Can your makeup make you sick?

Here is a way to clean up your nails at home and get yourself looking like you have just left the salon:

1) Removing any old polish with acetone polish remover and a cotton ball. A cotton ball holds up much better than tissue and will not fall apart causing you to waste more remover than needed.

2) Clip and file your nails to their desired length. Choose a round or square shape and try to keep all nails around the same length.

3) Soak your hands or feet in a bowl of warm water for about five minutes, add some liquid soap to help soften up nails and cuticles. Be sure the water is not too hot because this will actually end up drying out your hands. When you are finished soaking, apply a cuticle cream over the bottom of the nails to soften any rough spots.

4) Push back cuticles off your nail bed so they are out of the way for polishing. If you are used to a self-manicure and want nails to look great you can also cut back your cuticles if you feel comfortable doing so. Afterward clean and exfoliate hands with a scrub or homemade mixture of your choice, then wash it off.

5) Dry hands and apply the best lotion you have around the house. Make sure nails are wiped clean from any lotion and you are ready to polish. Apply a base coat first then two thin coats of polish. Let it dry then finish with a topcoat to help protect nails. If you are a little messy with the color, you don’t have to start all over again, just grab a Q-Tip and use nail polish to clean up skin around the nails.

We have all come across a woman with impossibly long nails at least once in our lives and wondered, “how that heck does she function with those things?” Whereas extravagant nail design and extraordinarily long false nails are often considered a tacky hood trend in this neck of the woods, it turns out that in Tokyo they call it art!

On Monday Tokyo hosted a huge Nail Expo, boasting over 50,000 attendees, all hoping to catch a glimpse of the amazing nail designs on display by the events manicure masters.  Check out photos of the nail art that was submitted for the Nail Queen 2009 Awards Ceremony in the gallery below. Somehow, I feel as though I’ve already seen many of these designs on the display board at the local round-the-way-nail shop and called them ghetto, but hey…art it is.

3) Hold the picture up and make a small pencil mark on the wall where the top edge of the frame will be.

4) Choose an appropriate hook. You might want a two-piece nail-and-hook, or a hollow-wall anchor for heavier objects.

5) Holding the picture’s wire taut, measure from the wire (or from the hanging tab if that’s what the picture has) to the frame’s top edge. Measure down that distance from the pencil mark you made on the wall and mark that spot – that’s where the hook will go.

6) Nail the picture hook into the wall where you’ve just made a mark.

7) Hang the picture and adjust it so it’s straight.
