Our First Lady got a sexy makover this past weekend.  Michelle Obama glams it up when she gave music students a preview of the upcoming Governor’s Ball performances.She changed it up with a sexier Jason Wu dress with a crisscross top and sleeker, sassier bob.

President Barack Obama and First Lady Michelle are on the cover of the March issue of ESSENCE.

They spoke to the mag about education and how they deal with educating First Daughters Sasha and Malia:

President Barack says, “Malia will tell you, my attitude was, if she came home with a B, that’s not good enough because there’s no reason why she can’t get an ‘A’…”

First lady Michelle Obama framed her national campaign against childhood obesity in intensely personal terms, relating that her own daughters were starting to get off-track before the family’s pediatrician gave her a wake-up call and warned her to watch it.

Some people feel that by the First Lady addressing this issue, it will begin to promote eating disorders, especially when she used her daughters Sasha and Malia’s weight as examples after they visited their pediatrician:

“In my eyes I thought my children were perfect. I didn’t see the changes… I wasn’t always aware of how all the calories and fat in some of the processed foods I was buying were adding up. Sasha and Malia’s doctor cautioned me that I had to look at my children’s BMI and he was concerned that something was getting off balance.”

We see nothing wrong with a parent taking an interest in what their children are eating!

In an interview on NBC’s “Today” show, the First Lady said:

“I still see myself as Michelle Obama, the girl who grew up in the South Side of Chicago — Marian and Fraser’s daughter. I’ve got this husband who does these interesting things — and I’m Malia and Sasha’s mother,” she said.

“I approach this position like I approach my life,” the first lady went on. “I try to be as authentically me as I can be, because it’s easier to maintain it. So what people have seen over the course of the year is really Michelle. And I find a level of comfort in that role.

Michelle Obama also said the country is going through tough times with a recession and two wars. She said Americans are rightfully frustrated, and, she says, “the person in charge is the person folks look to.”

She said that since Barack Obama became president last year, the couple have “much more respect” for their predecessors because only presidents and their families understand the job’s pressures.

The First Lady also said she teases her husband about his graying hair. She said his mother and grandfather were gray, “so he was going in that direction anyway.”

Michelle Obama turns 46 years old today, completing her first year as First Lady. Here are 46 things you didn’t know about about Michelle Obama.

1. Her nickname is “Miche” (pronounced “Meesh”).

2. Her husband calls her “My Rock”

3. Her father worked the swing shift in the boiler room at Chicago’s water purification plant.

4. She grew up with her older brother, Craig, and parents in a one-bedroom, one-bathroom apartment. She shared the living room with her brother, which was separated by a room divider.

5. She and her brother both skipped a year at school – second grade.

6. As a girl, she loved her “Easy-Bake Oven”.

7. Michelle was student council treasurer in high school.

8. Growing up, she practiced playing the piano so much that she had to be told to stop.

9. Although a great athlete, she shied away from competitive sports because, her big brother says, “she hated losing”.

10. Her father died of complications from multiple sclerosis when she was in her 20s.
