Runway To Real Life: How To Do Makeup Like A ‘Fashion Week’ Model

Turns out you can go about it one of two ways:

FILL IN THE BLANK: This technique works if you have a liner that is almost identical to the shadow you’re using.
1) With the pencil, start by lightly making the outline of the shape you want around your eye, closely lining your bottom lashes and circling up to your brow bone, making sure the line is really straight and seamless.
2) Take a fluffy brush and smudge the color slightly.
3) Then, take your shadow (it can be cream or powder, just make sure to use a brush) and fill in the outline, patting the color on at the edges to ensure you don’t slip outside the lines.

CLEAN UP CREW: This version also can be used with creams or powder formulas.
1) Start by applying the shadow all over your lids, bringing it up to the brow bone and winging it out to the ends of your eyebrows.
2) Trace your bottom lashes with the same color using a small shadow brush.
3) Take a cotton swab dipped in a tiny bit of makeup remover and simply erase any extra shadow, forming the exact shape you want. The same technique works if any pigment has fallen under your eyes and on the tops of your cheeks.

Beauty 911: More Ways To Treat Dark Spots

Keep cool. Store makeup and fragrance away from humidity and heat, which both degrade products. The bathroom cabinet may be convenient, but a dresser drawer is better. Wipe down lipstick cases and compacts regularly with a wet wipe, and wash brushes in warm, soapy water.

Roll up. I recommend a washable-fabric brush roll for easy access. It protects the bristles and keeps the brushes separate so they don’t muddy each other.

Spring clean. I mark every product with the date I opened it so I know when it needs to be tossed. Replace mascara and foundation every three months, and lipstick and gloss after a year. At least twice a year, I get rid of anything I don’t wear regularly. READ THE REST HERE!

Makeup artist James Kaliardos explained to Allure how he pulled it off:

The chubby NARS Soft Touch Shadow Pencil in Dark Right (a metallic blue-gray) was spread all over the lid, high above the crease, and underneath the lower lashes.

Over that, NARS Eyeshadow in Night Flight was applied; it’s a blue that is so dark it borders on black and that has finely-milled flecks of silver shimmer.

And to bring to life the sparkling element of the painting, the lids were topped with the NARS Eyeshadow in Tropic, a turquoise shade with large chunky silver glitter.

To keep the models’ eyes from getting lost in all the dark colors, the inner rims of their eyes were lined with beige liner, and coated only the top lashes in mascara.

Well, there you have it. Who’s giving it a go?

Starting where your lashes begin, draw a thin line all the way to the outer edges, extending it a half inch up into a wing.

Then thicken the line from the midpoint to the outer corner by going over it a couple more times–you should end up creating a triangle at the outer corner of each eye.

Trace over the eyeliner using a small angled brush to darken and fill in any gaps.

I’m sure that the mere thought of parting with that last smidgen of face powder that makes your face look absolutely flawless is terrifying because it was discontinued (a practice that isn’t so surprising) and you can’t find a similar shade anywhere. But however sad your plight is to seek out an equally-fabulous face powder, Simon says “chuck it” because when you first bought it, it was light brown but now it’s turned two shades darker – red alert!

Unfortunately, there isn’t a “one-size-fits-all” solution to determine when you should dump your color cosmetics because that’s decided in large part  by the product’s formulation and the method in which you store them which should always be in a cool, dry place. Because cosmetics manufacturers aren’t under a U.S. mandate to display expiry dates on their packaging, you’re then left with the task of adhering to loose guidelines doled out to us by these same manufacturers concerning the toss schedule of your products.

Liquid Liner & Mascara: Up to 3 months unless they begin to smell sooner. With all of the opening and closing of the tube and repeated usage of the wand itself, there’s a higher risk of bacteria being introduced, therefore increasing your chances of developing an eye infection or at the very least mild irritation so be cautious.
Cream Eyeshadow: 3-4 months
Powder Blush, Face Powder, Powder Eyeshadow, Eye Pencils: 6 months to 1 year – sharpen pencils regularly.
Foundations (Cream & Liquid): 1 year
Concealer: 1.5 years
Lipstick: 1-2 years

Step Two: “Apply your desired eyeshadow, eyeliner, and two coats of mascara ensuring you coat every lash from the inner- and outer-corners.”

Step Three: “Once dry, apply a thin layer of eyelash glue to the underside of the strip of lashes and let dry for 30 seconds so that it becomes tacky. Hold a mirror in your lap and look down to find the exact placement to apply the lashes. Carefully lay the lashes down at the base of your natural lashes; you may use your fingers or tweezers to do so.”

Step Four: “To really press lashes in and ensure they are secured, take an angled eyeliner brush with a little black waterproof gel eyeliner and press into lashes. This also helps to conceal any glue that may be present, and eliminate any fleshy tones at the base of the lash-line.”

Step Five: “To remove, gently rub an oil-based eye-makeup remover over your lashes, and off they come.”

Q: Inquiring minds want to know…who are some the celebs you’ve had the pleasure of working with?

Estelle, Brandy, Hilary Duff, Amerie, Letoya Luckett, Raven Symone, Regina King, Lauren London and the list goes on and fortunately on.

Q: Of all the celebrities you’ve worked with, who’s the most adventurous with her makeup and why given that you’ve established yourself for your clean makeup techniques?

I’d say Estelle, takes the most risks with her look. She loves to try new things. She’s not afraid to push the envelope. We’ve had some great moments. I can remember a brief conversation with Rachel Roy where she complemented me on my work with Estelle, from the extreme to clean because even with her look being soft and clean it too was setting a trend. I have seen many things we have tried translated in new ways on other artist. Same as with Letoya Luckett, our Purple lip from the video for Regret really started a movement as well!

Q: What’s most meaningful to you about being a makeup artist? I have the opportunity to make someone look and feel their best. It’s a wonderful feeling knowing that I help evoke confidence in a person.

Q: What’s the one makeup product a woman should never be without?

I would have to say Lip gloss. That’s why I created my own line Kissable Couture (21 shades in all). Working with Fergie for years we bought up stock from all over of a favorite shade she wore that was discontinued. I thought what are we gonna do when these run out?! The only answer I could come up was to make my own! Lip gloss is fresh and now! Make the lips a focal point without being obnoxious. It’s inexpensive, yet makes you feel luxurious. Its fashion for your lips.
