DEEP PURPLE

We’d recommend a lip gloss for a sexy, dramatic look. The gloss will look healthy if you use a semi-transparent shade, rather than a traditional matte lipstick, which can make you look like you have bruised lips. The purple shade generally looks better with a paler skin tone (versus a summertime glow), but you’ll want to wear a little color on your cheeks in a medium brown or pink shade, and a nice, classic eye. It may be fun to really play up your lashes, but I’d avoid a deep, smoky eye – as that could make you look like a vampire.

WARM & TOASTY NUDES

You can really play upon a natural, everyday look, while still being made-up. Also, this is one of the easiest shades for all skin tones to wear, as you can find lip colors with an assortment of undertones. When wearing a nude or brown lip color, we suggest a matte or traditional lipstick rather than a gloss, as glosses can often look ‘too nude’ and weirdly shimmery. This lip is great for casual wear in warm, muted, almost nutty shades. We’d suggest a less-is-more eye, with only simple mascara and well-groomed brows. Stick with a lighter, natural eye and line your eyes with a dark shadow if you want a little oomph, but this shouldn’t compete with your look. With this shade, people are sometimes devoted to their nude or brown lip liners, and that is an acceptable way to wear the color, as long as you don’t make the lines around your lips too harsh. Fill your entire lip in with the liner and apply a lip balm over top to keep the color on and make sure you stay moisturized.

When it’s ten below outside, it’s tempting to turn your morning shower into a half-hour steam-a-thon. But after about 15 minutes, all that heat begins to compromise your skin’s lipid layer, a complex of fatty acids that holds in precious moisture. Turn down the heat as much as you can—or at least shorten your shower time.

Wearing the Wrong Lip Balm

To soften and help seal cracks, slick on an ointment, then wear cotton socks while you sleep.

To prevent a hat from messing up your hair, “make sure hair is totally dry first—if it’s even slightly damp, it will dry flattened-out under the hat.” Prevent dents in long hair by gathering it into a loop and tucking it under the cap. To maintain volume in hair that’s shoulder-length or longer, part it on the opposite side from where you normally do, then flip it back after you take the hat off. To fill out a thin face: Using circular motions, apply your blush to the center of your cheeks and blend it along the cheekbones and straight back to your ears. On a narrow face, use a bright pink blush with highlighter on the apples.

To shorten a long face: Dust your blush from the apples up toward the temples, then a little across each eyelid and on the chin. Having the same shade on your eyes, cheeks, and chin will make your face look shorter.

To soften a square face: Apply a soft shade of blush on the apples and down into the hollows of your cheeks. Then lightly skim your brush over your temples to very subtly contour.

To create higher cheekbones: Choose a contouring powder or a matte bronzer a shade or two darker than your skin. Starting at the outer cheekbones, lightly sweep it over them. A dot of highlighter on the tops of the cheekbones creates a lifted effect.

First, think of the lighting: Certain lights reflect more than others—fluorescent especially—so skip anything too sparkly at the office. Then consider your skin: Blushes with shimmer bring sallow skin back to life, while matte blushes are ideal for oily skin, eliminating shine and staying put longer. Sheer blushes, which tend to be creams or gels, look best on very dark or very pale complexions, since they allow the skin to show through.

FLAUNT YOUR SHAPE
If your eyes are close together, leave the inner corner bare and highlight it with a pale shimmery shadow. Extend the line at the outer corners, finishing just beyond the edge of the lash line—the farther out, the more dramatic the look. This makes close-set eyes appear to have more space between them. For eyes that are wide-set, the opposite holds true. Line the eyes all the way to the inner corner and don’t extend the line at the outer corners. If you’re wearing liquid liner for day, be sure the line is fine—no heavy streaks—and match your mascara to the liner.

GO EASY
The process of taking off your makeup should be gentle and should never leave your skin dehydrated or irritated. That’s why I like to use a cleansing oil, which won’t dry out your face. Using your fingers, swipe a small amount of oil across your lids, eyebrows, and lips, and then lightly massage it all over your face. This will soften your skin and loosen the makeup, so you don’t have to rub like crazy. Then take a flat, square cotton pad—I like these better than the balls, which can be rough—and pour a little cleansing oil on it. Go over the same spots again, being careful not to scrub back and forth. Just skim the surface in one direction to pull up the color.

30 Minutes To Gunmetal Glam

1. Prep: Cleanse with a good quality wipe and apply fresh concealer.

2. Eye Shadow: Press all over the lid and under the eye. Dark skins should opt for an on-trend pewter gray shadow, while fairer skins can work a more silver/putty shade.

3. Apply black kohl liner to the inner rim of the eye and blend into the shadow.

4. Add tons of black mascara and a touch of highlighter on the top of the cheekbones and sculpt along them with a bronzer or buff color.

5. Define lips with a nude pencil and fill in with a neutral lip color.

45 Minutes To Black Glitter

1. Work foundation into the skin with a brush and use an illuminating concealer under the eyes.

2. Next, apply an ebony cream base over the lid and blend into the socket line.

3. Then use a mixing medium (like Elizabeth Arden Eight Hour Cream) to blend glitter into a paste and apply it across the lids.
