I’ve never quite understood the lifestyle of the “label whore”:

She who spends all her savings on the latest Louis Vuitton bag only to find that, upon her exit of the mall, every woman walking by and whistling nonchalantly holds the same thing, but in variation.

She who rips the back pockets off her jeans and the tongues off her sneakers and re-sews them with a monogrammed patch of fabric, turning her average style into a customized (but entirely fake and desperate) costume.

She who will, very willingly, pay 10 times the amount worthy of a plain, short-sleeved, cotton T-shirt, simply because it exclaims “GUCCI,” but fits exactly the same as a Hanes – just “eh.”

Designer John Galliano has recognized these women and their childish need of “wanting to belong,” has ignored said psychological issue, and instead decided: bank on it!

With the creation of the Christian Dior Contact Lenses, women can now sell their eye to the devil (dressed in Dior drag) because, now impacted with a sheen of gold and an iconic “CD” logo, your eyes will no longer serve as the windows to your soul, but to that of a fashion house that has no idea who you are. And now, you’ve joined the ranks of Kanye West and Nicki Minaj – all you’ve done is name-check them, and they haven’t “checked” you anything in return, not a cent.

Designer Karl Lagerfeld, forever the narcissist, also jumped on the “brand-a-bobblehead” bandwagon. He sent models upon models down this year’s Paris Spring/Summer runway, each plastered with pieces from his Les Trompe-L’oeil De Chanel Tattoo set. Surely, they were temporary but, unfortunately, his desire to sell them to the masses was not. A fake tattoo doesn’t seem fake at all once it breaks your pocket for $75. And honestly, if you were truly a die-hard fan, you could get the same logo done, for about the same price in a hole-in-the-wall New York parlor. So if you’re gonna do it, really do it, you label whore.

The Louis Vuitton nail designs and decals are a different story entirely. There’s nothing like tap-tap-tapping away at your desk during your graveyard shift at the job that you’ve only acquired to try and make enough money to afford the actual luxury items that are currently being poorly represented on the tips of your nails – the nails that sadly stare back at you as you, ya know, tap-tap-tap. Way to come full circle!

Urban Dictionary describes “brand whore” as:

Someone who buys and prominently displays name brand products (or products that feature large corporate logos) under the belief that such loyalty to a label or corporation is a cachet and brings prestige to their otherwise lack of taste, regardless of the actual quality or value of the products.

Ladies, isn’t there another way to show that you have style, money, and/or both?

The LV Spring 2010 bag line, however, has dropped its trademark luxurious complexity and opted to go strictly conceptual. The concept? Utilitarianism.

Not the satchel type of utilitarian. The garbage bag type of utilitarian. Vuitton’s eccentric designer, Marc Jacobs, has released the line’s new “Raindrop Besace” bag, which is essentially a raincoat, cut in the shape of a trash bag, with a leather strap (which is removable in case you actually want to carry it like a garbage bag).

The best part of this ridiculous thing is the fact that it costs $1,960.

Considering the fact that the designer market is tanking in these tough economic times, an overpriced designer trash bag hardly seems like the way to drive sales. Especially when the company makes bags with double the brand visibility for a fraction of the price like this one from the LV website:

Perhaps Louis Vuitton should stick to what works, and leave the trash bags in the garbage.

Louis Vuitton’s‘ Spring 2010 Paris runway show was a mash-up of all things unlikely for the posh fashion house.  Models came trotting down the runway in humongous Afros, layered outfits and (gulp) kitten heels! While the brand has been reinventing itself constantly in recent years, this collection is nothing if not unexpected.  We often consider LV to be iconic in terms of its super-luxe, almost pretentious delivery of classic pieces.  Accordingly, seeing a two foot mass of (dare I say) nappy hair on a model adorned in garments carrying the Vuitton name is initially quite startling. Has Louis gone ethnic? And how should we feel about this blatant cultural reference?

Once the shock wears off, it becomes clear that designer Marc Jacobs has infused his quirky, visionary appeal into this collection. It seems like he is taking the fashion house away from its stuffy perch atop the grandiose mountain of the fashion elite, and settling in a newer, hipper, more provocative lane. According to Style.com, the line abandoned last season’s “sugar-coated luxe,” in favor of  “city utilitarianism.” I never thought I’d see the day when a Vuitton line is described as “utilitarian.”

LisaRaye was a victim of airport theft this weekend at JFK airport. Her Louis Vuitton bag was lifted while she wasn’t looking. The actress accused airline employees of pilfering her bag after the airline told her the bag was never scanned.

The former First Lady of Turks & Caicos took to her Twitter page to beg her “Twitt Fam” for help in retrieving her belongings.

…I need my WHOLE Twitt Family to HELP me put it out there I will pay WHOEVER comes up with my bag..Delta employee, police, family, WHOEVER. i hope like hell they find my bag. I hv family keepsakes n there i travel with. So help me bring awareness to it. Thanks
