This weekend’s Pride parades have reinforced the notion that same sex relationships continue to be largely misunderstood by mainstream society. While the glitter, rainbow flags and campaign fliers are swept from the streets of New York and San Francisco, here at Hello Beautiful we try our best to interpret some aspects of a typical female-female relationship of which you might not have been aware. We also ask you this: Can lesbians teach us anything about relationships?

But first, there may be a number of questions you still haven’t had answered.

How Much Variety Is There In The Lesbian Community?

In case you didn’t know, there is a huge degree of variety in the lesbian community. You’ll find women from all ethnicity, religious affiliations, and professional and social backgrounds.

But a word of advice: Don’t watch The Real L Word on Showtime if you want to learn about diversity in the lesbian community because you won’t find it (the cast is made up of mostly professional white women).

In terms of personality type TheFrisky profiles 9 types of lesbians according to traits and behaviors:

1. The Sophisticate: Usually an artist or academic, this well read member of the intelligentsia is socially conscious without smelling like patchouli. An important public person, she’s a wise, loving role model. Example: Melissa Etheridge

2. The Tomboy: She’s strong enough for a man, but made for a women. This gal wouldn’t be caught dead in a skirt! Naturally chivalrous, her attitude and outfit often make people question her gender. Example: Daniela Sea and Samantha Ronson.

The LUG (Lesbian Until Graduation): Maybe she’s stuck in an all-girls’ dorm, maybe she’s just experimenting because she’s at a small private college, but no matter what the impulse is, she’s just learning. 4. The Lipstick Lesbian This girlie-girl is so girlie she likes girls. She isn’t afraid of attention and follows trends to a tee. Being a lesbian doesn’t make her look or feel like an outsider. She’s comfortable being her feminine self and that is why she is the dream girl male lesbian fantasies are made of. Example: Portia DiRossi and Lindsay Lohan.

Why Do Some Lesbians Chose To Be With Masculine Women?

In March last year Oprah spotlighted the lesbian community and asked a guest psychologist, “Why Do They Date Women Who Don’t Look Like Women?”

The answer is complex and varies from woman to woman. What is certain is that no matter what, these women are women. The level of attraction to particular ‘masculine’ features exists on different levels in the straight community also.

What Do Lesbians Have In Common With Straight Women?

The Gottman gay/lesbian couples study, which spanned a period of 12 years, concluded that same sex, long term relationships shared a range of similarities with heterosexual relationships.

The study found that even in the face of social resistance to same sex relationships, lesbians followed similar paths to relationship stability and battled against many of the same hurdles as straight couples.

When taken seriously, both types of relationships are characterized by the resilience of members of a couple and the level to which each member attempts to keep the relationship in working harmony.

What Do Lesbians Do Well In Their Relationships?

The Gottman study also found that lesbian women in particular were more “upbeat in the face of conflict” and played fewer emotional mind games with their partner. It was also found that lesbians, even more so than gay men, did not take conflict personally and were therefore well equipped to break down particular issues in the relationship before a point of no return.

Of course relationships in themselves are unique and the lesbian community could never be fully understood from one study to the next or from one point of view to another.

But, knowing who and what you know, what do you think? Can lesbians teach us anything about relationships?

The woman in the picture, if you didn’t know, is super model Naomi Campbell who I happen to think is absolutely beautiful. But perfect rear end?

Please.

Perfect would be somewhere between Naomi and, say, Bria Myles. Perfect would be a taller Beyonce or a slimmer Alicia Keys. Perfect would be Serena Williams if she’d been, say, a distance runner and not a tennis player. Perfect would be useless video vixen Solei or adult film star Roxy Reynolds (and don’t expect a link on that one).

But this, I think, represents the fundamental disconnect between men and women. What women find attractive in themselves and each other is often not what men find attractive at all.

Very recent studies have found that seeing the body of a curvy, hippy woman has the same effect on a man as taking drugs.

This, of course, would seemingly put Black women in the awkward position of being almost effortlessly able to induce a natural high, while simultaneously forcing them to continue in their psychological warfare against the rail thin, pancake-flat on both sides, top fashion models that America ridiculously endorses as the feminine ideal.

One would expect that women—particularly Black women—would know better than this. Most fashion designers are gay males. The only type of women these guys could even feel remotely attracted towards would be the ones that have the bodies of young boys.

Still, even when women go lesbian they seem to pick unattractive partners. Anybody seen Sex and the City star Cynthia Nixon’s main squeeze?

Ugh.

Then there’s all this hate against genuine cuties with real talent like Nicki Minaj!

I’ve even heard some disparaging things (from women, of course) against a lady who physically, academically and intellectually is, by any reasonable standard, completely above reproach—Michelle Obama!

All this leads me to suggest that, ladies: we men will accept your opinions on whether or not another woman has class.

We’ll listen to you prattle on and on about whether or not her purse is wack or her shoes are corny or her dress is cheap.

But when it comes to judging another woman physically, I’d advise ya’ll to leave that up to the experts.

Dear Gay Best Friend,

I would like to thank you first of all for being so real and for not being afraid to be yourself. I honor what you are doing and wish I had to strength to do it also.

I’m a 21-year old female and I have been bisexual for as long as I can remember. It’s a struggle living on the low and not wanting to tell anyone because I feel so ashamed. I do have lesbian friends and we go out and I can really be myself, but having to keep all of my feelings locked up and having to lie is really becoming stressful.

I have been in relationships with women before and I must say, during those short times it did last, I have never felt so good about myself, and so in love with any other person. When I was with a woman I wanted to tell my family, and the world, about this wonderful person I had met and fell in love with, but I could not. I couldn’t find the strength to do it. Since my last relationship with a woman, I’ve found a man – “the man” – I think I would like to spend the rest of my life with. He is not like the other men I have dated. He is so different from what I used to deal with, and I love him so much. He pleases me in every way except for one, and that is sexually.

You see, when we make love, I’m thinking of making love to FEMALES. When he’s away and I need to “get one off,” LOL, I think of females. I constantly think about the times I spent with them. I love this man and I never want to hurt him, but I’m so scared to tell him about my true desires. I don’t want him to feel like I don’t want him or that he doesn’t satisfy me, but the truth, Gay Best Friend, is that the urges I have for females, along with the want, desire, and passion that I hold towards women is becoming greater every day.

I’m lost and I don’t know what to do. I mean, maybe, it’s because I’m so young and I keep telling myself I’m being greedy, and I can’t have both, and I keep hoping that one day the answer will just fall out of the sky. I doubt it, but, still every day I hope.

I have so much on my plate, and me being a down low female is not making things easier. So, if you can guide me in any way, be it a book, website, poem, or anything I would appreciate it GREATLY. Thanks in advance for the advice, and for being so uplifting, and for making a way for those like you and myself. – Young and Struggling

Dear Young and Struggling,

You’re hoping the answer will fall from the sky, well, POOF!

First, I want to thank you for sending your question. That, in and of itself, was very brave. It shows your strength and courage to find truth and answers.

Second, yes, I do know of the struggle you are dealing with. When I was younger, and dating both men and women, it was very hard to explain the feelings I had for both sexes. Like you I didn’t know who to turn to, or who I could speak with about what I was experiencing.

Now that I’m older and wiser, thank God for maturity, I have become a strong advocate for doing what makes you happy, but more importantly following your heart. You have to do what makes you happy in your heart and your life. It’s obvious you prefer woman, and it’s an inner turmoil because you want to please not only yourself, but those you love. So, you are continuing to date men, and lo and behold, you find a man you really enjoy being with. Ain’t that something? However, when you are having sex with him you are thinking of women. When he is away you are thinking of women. Well, honey, if it walks like a duck and quacks like a duck, then it’s a duck. And, girl, you are a lesbian.

I hope you didn’t think I was going to let you off the hook. Let me get comfortable. If you are deceiving others, that is not good. The man you are involved with has a right to know. If you don’t disclose your feelings, and he finds out, it will not be pretty. Besides, you are not allowing him any say in the relationship. You are taking that away from him and it’s not fair. What if he chooses to be with you after you tell him your true desires? Then what? Just as I thought, you’re stuck, huh?

You stated perhaps you were being greedy. That is very selfish. Everybody wants to have their cake and eat it too. Imagine if someone did the same to you. Imagine if you discovered he was cheating on you. You would feel betrayed. You would be upset. And, you probably wouldn’t think he was “the man” for you.

Girl, I understand it’s difficult, and you are struggling within yourself because you don’t want to disappoint your family and friends. You want to make them happy. We all want to please our family and friends because those are the people we love, and they love us. But, what about you? Are you doing what makes you happy?  Are you loving yourself? And, who are you living for?

Let me tell you something, and it may take some time, hours, days, months, hell, even years before you get it, but first you’ve got to accept and love yourself. If you love you for who you are and not beat up yourself because of your sexuality, then others will love and accept you. Second, DON’T GET CAUGHT UP IN WHAT OTHERS THINK OF YOU. If they are your friends, your true friends, then they will stick by you and love you just the same because you are still the same lovable laughable personable good friend. Your family will still love you. They will support you and embrace you like they did before. If your friends don’t stick around, then guess what? They were never your true friends from the beginning. True friends will be there regardless.

One thing I’ve learned in my long journey and process of accepting me, was loving myself, and being happy with me. I’ve learned you can’t please everybody. Nope. You sure can’t. So, stop trying. And you know who taught me that valuable lesson? My grandmother and aunt. They told me, “Boy, folks hated on Jesus. Look at how they persecuted him for what he did for others. Look how they talked about him. What makes you think folks won’t do it to you.” Ever since then I walked to the beat of my own drum. Well, that which God is drumming.

As I got older I’ve also met some wonderful people who’ve assisted me on my journey. They are pastors and spiritual leaders. One spiritual leader told me, “You can’t please people. They are never satisfied. When it’s hot outside they want it to be cold. When it’s cold outside they want it to be hot. You go left they want to go right. You can’t please them.”

So, Ms. Young and Struggling I am saying to you, “Love you! Damn it.” Stop trying to please everybody. Girl, you are going to run yourself ragged trying to make everyone around you happy. Besides, who’s to say that this guy can’t be a good friend to you? Sit down with him lovingly and tell him your feelings. Explain to him what you’re going through. You stated he is different from all the other guys you have dated, so hopefully he really is, and if he loves you, he will understand.

And, thank goodness we are in a new day and age where there is a plethora of information for people who are struggling with their sexuality. You can read any of E. Lynn Harris’s books. His books changed the landscape for many men and women who were unaware of down low men and women in this world. You should also check out author, Laurinda Brown. She is a phenomenal and fabulous lesbian writer. And, I am certain there is a Lesbian, Gay, Bi-Sexual, Transgender (LGBT) Center in your area. Many have counselors who will speak with you over the phone, and you can remain anonymous until you are comfortable to share more information.

Indie film Truth Hall is the winner of multiple well-deserved awards including the International Black Film Festival’s Audience Choice Award, The International Black Film Festival’s Best Feature Award and San Diego Black Film Festival’s Best Comedy Award.

Check out my conversation with the award-winning filmmaker and lead actress Jade Jenise Dixon, of Stepping Stone Productions.

Abiola: Jade — it’s so exciting to see a smart, funny, upscale romantic comedy film featuring people of color. Congrats on getting your film made. When I was hosting The Best Short Films on BET, part of the show’s excitement was watching diverse, creative stories. What inspired you to become a filmmaker?

Jade: I wanted to tell stories that were important and depicted an upscale African American lifestyle. These stories are not often told so I wanted to present us in a different light. My latest project Truth Hall is smart, funny and upscale. I remember walking into a major Hollywood executive’s office with my script and he told me “I love the script but it might be too smart.” He didn’t think Black people could appreciate anything smart. That was a little disheartening for me because I felt like I wrote the best script I possibly could. I believe my film gave not only African American people a good voice but also African American filmmakers. There are so few of us in the industry, especially black female directors so it was important that I created something with a voice.

Abiola: Sadly, that is a common issue that I have run into numerous times from gatekeepers. When I was shooting my documentary Knives in My Throat dealing with bipolar disorder and mental illness, I was told the same thing, probably by the same executive! But thankfully, Jade, you persisted. Please tell our readers about your story. Summarize “Truth Hall.”

Jade: Truth Hall is about 5 women who reunite several years after college graduation for a wedding. As the story unfolds, the audience learns that there are a lot of skeletons in the closet and each one gets exposed in a dramatic yet sometimes comical banner. Truth Hall was the name of the dormitory they stayed in.

Abiola: Now, you also co-star in the movie. I was in awe of that fact! Was it difficult to balance so many hats?

Jade: It was really about the team. My team makes my job easy. Directing and producing is in my blood because I’ve been doing it for so many years. In high school, I directed For Colored Girls Who Have Considered Suicide When the Rainbow is Enuf. There’s an energy that comes over me once I’m sitting in the director’s chair. I go in and get the job done.

Abiola: Ntozake Shange’s for colored girls changed my life. Anybody who mentions that work is immediately someone whose work I’ll appreciate. I have a Safe Sex Awareness Initiative, so I was pleased as a viewer and an activist to see you introduce taboo topics. Did you find any resistance to tackling the stigmatized  subject of HIV and AIDS?

Jade: No, as a matter of fact I feel it helped fill a void. This is a story that needs to be told. There’s a line in the movie that says, “I had to take back the power it had on me.” There are no set of people who are exempt from this disease. HIV and AIDS affects so many people across the world.

Abiola: You also take on the sexuality taboos of lesbian love and homosexuality- in a romantic comedy. Tell us about that choice.

Jade: I wanted to show all sides of us. We can be mothers, wives, lawyers, doctors, etc. African American women can be anything. Homosexuality is heavily condemned in the African American community and it’s seen as an abomination by Christians. Although I’m a Christian, I feel like the idea of “belief” creates barriers as opposed to a sense of unity. Belief should never come before loving your children. Belief should never come before respecting other people.

Abiola: My girl Nicole Prescott is one of your stars. I love Nicole! She is extremely talented and known for a strong body of work.  Let’s talk about your casting process and the talent you chose.

Jade: Everyone knows Nicole! I didn’t hire a casting director, my company hired a few acting associates to find people. The difference between a casting director and an acting associate is that I get to see every person’s audition. It’s common practice for casting director’s to edit people’s auditions. I had the opportunity to see each person’s video so by the time we had table reads I had technically already seen everyone. We had a few table reads and then the final table read. At the final table read we selected a few cast members and the others came later.

I never gave dating a woman much thought. I have imagined what sex with a woman would be like as opposed to my pounding, sweat drops hitting me in my eye, grunting, bed breaking sexcapades with men. For some reason I assume sex with a woman would be softer, longer, more intense cause unlike men, we’d be using our brains during intercourse. But would it really be INTER-course. Maybe it should be called BUMPER-course.

What do I know? I’m not a lesbian, but judging by the weakened state of affairs in the dating game more and more women are considering taking a lesbian lover.

As of now, I do not have any outright lesbian friends. I do have girlfriends who have had girl-on-girl jump offs. What I noticed the most about my girlfriends who lust for women is that they don’t consider themselves to be bi-sexual or gay. They blurt it out in conversation like I knew all along then brush it off when they notice my eyebrow raised. The best excuse they give is “I was in college.” Not all of these relationships are in the past. From time to time, my girls will take a strap on to a chick Pinky style but swear they aren’t gay.
