Holding the #1 spot is Adele, whose 21 album sold 15.3 million copies. (She also holds the #7 spot with her 19 album – despite it being released three years ago – with 2.8 million copies.)

Lady Gaga technically nabbed the #2 spot, but she is still very far behind Adele in sales; her Born This Way album sold 5.4 million copies.

Rihanna sits pretty at the #5 spot with her LOUD album selling 3.4 million copies.

Beyonce, however, just made the cut. She achieved the final spot in the Top 10 with her 4 album selling only 2.1 million copies this year.

She told Time Out,

“I can’t even watch the Telephone video, I hate it so much. Beyonce and I are great together. But there are so many ideas in that video and all I see in that video is my brain throbbing with ideas and I wish I had edited myself a little bit more. It’s funny, though, because I know a lot of kids on the forums didn’t like the Alejandro video, but that was my favorite of all my videos. It’s not busy. But maybe that’s my own monster.”

And this isn’t a fleeting feeling. Lady Gaga also told Pop Justice:

“I hate ‘Telephone’. Is that terrible to say? It’s the song I have the most difficult time listening to. Ultimately the mix and the process of getting the production finished was very stressful for me. A music industry insider says that Lady Gaga and her label Interscope are launching a full scale attack on our girl Bey because Gaga is happy with her status as the number one worldwide artist and she’s not looking to be number two.

The insider claims that there has been a a lot of  bad blood between the two divas since an unspecified falling out the two had earlier this year. The insider adds, “Lady Gaga doesn’t see Beyonce as an artist – she doesn’t play instruments, she doesn’t write her songs, [in Lady Gaga's eyes] Beyonce’s just an empty shell.”

Lady Gaga’s people are starting a campaign  to expose Beyonce, and wants her fans to know that she’s a real musician and Beyonce is a dancer that has a nice voice.

While the lineup has not been finalized, the record label plans to find more acts who are willing to waive royalties that would have come from their tracks appearing on the compilation. Rumors are swirling that U2 and Bon Jovi will be added to the bill – and they plan on doing it fast.

“We are doing it only digitally because it is faster, and this will be a worldwide release. The plan is to have it available later this week,” a spokesperson for Universal Music said.

The music industry has been quick to support the relief efforts, with Lady Gaga‘s specially designed prayer bracelet selling out in only two days to make $250,000 for the people of Japan. Katy Perry donated funds raised from selling tour merchandise and The Black Eyed Peas have announced that the music video for “Just Can’t Get Enough” would be used to promote awareness and funds for victims of the tragedy. The clip, which was eerily shot in Japan just one week before the earthquake and tsunami hit, shows the band traveling throughout Tokyo.

A source said: “GaGa wanted to give her something special. The whip was made out of hundreds of diamonds and leather.

“When Beyonce received it she squealed with excitement. The dressing room was decorated with balloons and banners and a lot of champagne had been put on too.”

Forbes magazine released its ranking of the top-earning musicians from June 2009 to June 2010 and though they determined that U2 reigned supreme with $130 million, thanks to its massive 360 tour, it was Beyonce (coming in at No. 3) who became the list’s highest-earning female.

Forbes said the star banked $87 million through major endorsement deals with Nintendo and L’Oreal, as well as her House of Dereon fashion line and world tour.

Oprah regained the ‘Most Powerful’ crown this year, climbing back to the top with earnings of $315 million. She also scored a TV rank of #1, a press rank of #5 and a web rank of #5.

Where there are many minorities in the spotlight, namely the music industry, female artists over-sexualize themselves.  Partly because sex sells, but also because non-caucasian artists are slightly overcompensating for their lack of natural whiteness; they have to find another way to be desirous to the public.

What will it take to make everyone look beautiful – race and orientation aside?

Nicki Minaj and Lady Gaga’s proposed solution is to make people look eclectic and crazy, apparently.

Well let’s start with another question: where can we find beauty in our world?  My answer is art.  We find beauty in the unique art of nature and on canvases where paint is splashed and images are intentionally made to look abstract.  We find beauty in music where the beat gets you tapping your foot and migrating towards the dance floor regardless of what race you are.  Because abstract art is so subjective, people of all races can appreciate it.

Musical artists like Nicki Minaj and Lady Gaga are, to say the least, abstract and beautiful.  Their outfits are crazy – Lady Gaga wears cigarette glasses.  Those glasses are not sexy, in fact they are quite outrageous, but they attract attention and they get people thinking and wondering about what they’re seeing.  Lady Gaga doesn’t tell people to start wearing them, although she does make cigarettes look better hanging from rims than from lips.  She’s keeping us entertained by making us think, what an intellectual chick.

Both Nicki Minaj and Lady Gaga have been labeled bisexual, and they’re both mainstream artists whose songs are echoed throughout cities and suburbs alike.  People may not support gay rights, but they’re starting to support ‘gay’ music, and more important gay musicians.  Lady Gaga’s last video for her song Alejandro was a bit racy and incited strong opinions against her, but nevertheless she was expressing how the gay community felt about certain things.

When I look at Nicki Minaj I see a girl with a lot of spunk and colorful uniforms.  In comparison to previous mainstream pop-stars like Britney Spears, Nicki Minaj is a lot more artistically expressive in terms of her outfit choice.  She still uses her body to present sexual power, but more than that she uses costumes and music videos to present her female empowerment.

Both of these new artists have really stepped away from previous notions of standardized beauty by making the obscure beautiful – and mainstream.  Their style is different from artists like Beyonce, Alicia Keys, Britney Spears, and other previous female pop-stars that have ruled the radio.

Niki Minaj and Lady Gaga, while both are highly sexualized, are launching their artistic careers in new directions by using outrageous imagery to accompany their music.  They are making people think, and that’s what is important in the world today.  Mainstream media has been attacked many a time, being likened to ‘brainwashing’, but with this type of music that has us thinking “WTF?!… oh… okay.. wait..WTF?!, Okay, never mind I’m good, I like this stuff”.

What are your thoughts?  Do you think these artists are prompting the nation to think like the post-racist, post-prejudice people that we want to be?

Is Nicki Minaj, and even Beyonce who is featured in Gaga’s video ‘Telephone’, changing the game by acting out against stereotypes?

When Rap-Up asked whether Kelis had heard the Internet chatter comparing her style to that of Rihanna and Lady Gaga’s, the singer responded,

“Yeah. I tried not to see, but it’s noticeable.”

Although it may ruffle her fans’ feathers, the “Acapella” songstress says she’s flattered by the comparisons and attributes the similarities to her peers’ ages.

“They’re really young. What else are they supposed to do? I’ve been around for a long time and that’s what artists do; we take from each other and we recycle. And quite frankly, it may not even be them. It might be stylists that have been around as long as I have and are like, ‘Hey, let’s recycle this on these younger artists.’”

But she shrugs off the controversy.

“I’m not offended by it. I don’t really have much feeling about it, honestly. It just keeps me on my toes and allows me to continue moving forward, so it’s cool. I really don’t see it as a bad thing. I guess it means I’m on the right track.”

While she has no beef with her fellow fashionistas, you won’t find her listening to their music on her iPod.

“I can’t say that I do. I’m familiar with it, like I know it. I don’t live in a hole. If I’m at a party and they play it, I enjoy it. I get it.”

So, not everyone is a fan of Lady Gaga.

Most of the teens still are – and they’ve probably broken many a finger nail trying to twist their hair into dangly oversized bows – but winning over the elders of the universe is another story altogether. And that sucks for Gaga – especially because she’s named one woman old enough to be her grandmother (ignore the racial differences for the time being), as an inspiration.

Gaga, and her delusional self, believes they “relate” to one another, as she’s labeled them both “androgynous, robo, future fashion queens.” She meant that in a good way, though. She even went as far as to call the inspiring, aging former Bond Girl “Jesus.”

But Grace Jones isn’t buying it. She’s not flattered at all. She’s now just one pissed off old lady – and that’s the worst kind of old lady.

In an interview with England’s The Guardian this week, the legendary Grace Jones admitted that Gaga had once approached her about a possible collaboration. She denied. Her reasoning?

“I’d just prefer to work with someone who is more original and someone who is not copying me, actually. I’ve seen some things she’s worn that I’ve worn, and that does kind of piss me off… I wouldn’t go to see her.”

Jones added: “I really don’t think of her at all. I go about my business. I just don’t play with other acts as a rule.”
