Rihanna made an appearance on the “X-Factor” last night alongside the man who gave her a record deal six years ago, L.A. Reid. At the mogul’s Hamptons home, Ri and her mentor judged the boys of the competition. Naturally, she made them go wild.

However, there was one contestant who caught her eye: a 14-year-old rapper she likened to her rumored man J. Cole. WATCH at the 5:30 mark.

(Pharrell shared his expertise with Paula Abdul’s “Over 30″ group, while Enrique Iglesias helped Nicole Scherzinger with the multi-member acts. Mariah Carey was supposed to help Simon Cowell with his “Girls” group but was a no show because her flight was grounded due to Hurricane Irene.)

L.A. Reid – the man behind Rihanna, Usher and Mariah Carey’s careers – recently admitted he could’ve taken credit for Lady Gaga’s success too, but was having a bad day when he decided to drop her – only months after originally signing her to Island Def Jam.

Of course, Gaga went on to sign with Interscope and L.A. moved to Epic Records, but here’s what he had to say about what could have been:

“One day, this artist came to my office. She played piano, she had on white go-go boots, thigh-high boots. She sat down at the piano and she played and she sang and when she was done, I said, ‘You are an amazing artist, a true artist and you will change music’ and I signed her. Her name was Lady Gaga.

“Then a few months later, I got her demos and it was a work in progress and I was having a bad day. A bad day. And I said, ‘You know what? I really don’t like it. Let her have her freedom. Let her go find her career.’ And it was the worst thing I’ve ever done.”

Has Ciara been signed to L.A. Reid’s Epic Records label? Following her split from Jive Records and the failure that was her “Basic Instinct” album, we’ve been waiting for her to announce what her next move was.

But L.A. Reid may have made it for her. Over the weekend, he tweeted the subliminal message:

“@Ciara will be officially #EPIC very soon! Thats my girl!”

Hopefully this means he’ll be working with the struggling singer soon. After all, he is responsible for the signing Mariah Carey, Justin Bieber, Rihanna, and Usher.

Let’s hope that is all about to change.

The-Dream Fired From Def Jam [RUMOR]

The-Dream and L.A. Reid have been fired from Def Jam, according to Gyant Unplugged.

Vin Vivendi, a french international media conglomerate, with activities in music, television, film, and telecommunications, is reportedly behind the firing, claiming The-Dream as well as LA Reid are out due to disappointing sales figures and exuberant spending.

This comes as a bit of a surprise since L.A. Reid recently signed Shyne to a million dollar deal with the company. Then again, considering how the split with then-President Jermaine Dupri went down, maybe this should have been expected.

The-Dream was Vice President of Island Def Jam; L.A. Reid was Chairman and CEO.

An official statement is expected to be released soon.

L.A. Reid was scheduled to give a speech at a music event this week but canceled. He says his son was sick but sources say he wanted to avoid questions about his future at the label.

If you haven’t heard, it has been reported that the Chairman and CEO is in danger of being fired from Def Jam.

Today, on Page Six, they repeated the rumor saying Reid was under tremendous pressure to produce some hits after lackluster sales from Rihanna and Mariah Carey.

Anyway, L.A. was supposed to speak at the $1,000-a-seat Billboard symposium, where all the top music industry players would be, but he backed out at the last minute.

Even if he isn’t about to face termination, his plan for success doesn’t sound too promising. A source told The Post,

“L.A. had to cancel because he was called away on family business, not because his son was ill. That was just a story that went around. He isn’t afraid to answer questions about his future with the label. He is about to sign J.Lo [Jennifer Lopez] and isn’t going anywhere.”

Jennifer just got dropped from her longtime label, Epic Records. She claims she’s the one who left.
