Rumor has it that Elba could one day wind up playing one of the most iconic British film roles there is: James Bond.

“It’s a rumor,” he says flatly. But does that mean you should dismiss it out of hand? Not necessarily. Elba says he recently talked about the role with his father and said that while it sounded like an interesting idea, he had concerns. “I just don’t want to be the black James Bond,” he says. “Sean Connery wasn’t the Scottish James Bond, and Daniel Craig wasn’t the blue-eyed James Bond, so if I played him, I don’t want to be called the black James Bond.”

The three actors received nods during the nominations telecast this morning.

Taraji is nominated for Best Actress in a Mini-Series or TV movie for “Taken from Me: The Tiffany Rubin Story,” while Idris Elba and Laurence Fishburne are both nominated for Best Actor in a Miniseries; Elba for his BBC America drama, “Luther,” and Fishburne for “Thurgood,” the HBO film about civil rights icon Thurgood Marshall. Veteran actor Andre Braugher is also up for Supporting Actor In A Drama Series for “Men of a Certain Age.”

The Emmy Awards are scheduled to air September 18th on Fox.

Black men have never been sexy. We’re ‘sportsmen.’ We’re ‘intimidating.’ We’re not ‘good fathers.’ So we need that. I think we should celebrate that. But am I a sex symbol? I don’t know. Not everybody likes one thing.

On who he’s dating
I’m sure people are curious, but do they really care? No. Jesus Christ, does it make a difference in their lives? No, not at all. …I don’t hide my girlfriend in a box or anything like that. The series premieres tonight on Showtime. Elba will play a painter who meets Cathy (Laura Linney), a suburban mother and high school teacher with cancer. The series also stars Oscar nominated actress Gabourey Sidibe and Oliver Platt as Linney’s husband.

2010 is the year of Idris Elba.

His latest film, “The Losers,” raked in about $9.6 million this weekend.

“Takers,” starring Elba alongside T.I., Chris Brown, and Michael Ealy is to be released this coming August.

And “Legacy” has become an indie favorite, as it is an official selection of both the Tribeca Film Festival and Glasgow Film Festival.

In it, Elba plays Black Ops operative Malcolm Gray who returns home after a botched mission in Eastern Europe. Holed up in a Brooklyn motel room, he is torn between retribution and personal salvation as he mentally unravels. When the walls close in, his story may be all he can leave behind.

Hmm, looks a little Will Smith in “I Am Legend”-ish, but we’ll check it out anyway!

How do American and English fans react to your celebrity?

It’s weird. An English star has to be a lot more humble. But if an American comes over, he has to be all “Yeah, motherfucker, I’m the best!” And English people love that. In America, I downplay this whole celebrity thing; there are just more important things in life. I will probably never be überfamous in America because I don’t care about the culture of celebrity.

What’s one quality you’ve taken from each culture?

One of the greatest things that America has to offer is optimism. To English people, the optimism in America can be almost nauseating. But in America, it’s the reason why you can do what the fuck you want. And for good or bad, England became one of the most powerful nations in the world—England has resilience. Those two things make me an unstoppable human being!

Like your character in the upcoming heist flick Takers.

I play Gordon, the leader of a motley pack, a hardened criminal who does high-end bank jobs. He’s suave but ferocious—and ruthless when he needs to be.

The cast seems like a fun boys club, with costars Matt Dillon, Paul Walker, and Michael Ealy.

Good fellas, man. Everyone was just snapping on one another. If you weren’t sharp with your wit you might get laughed at for 20 minutes. Of course you have Hayden Christensen, he’s a little less slick with his…he’s more of a farm boy. But he’d give it back whenever he wanted to.

Did you spit any rhymes or sing melodies between takes with your other castmates T.I. and Chris Brown?

Yeah, we were huddled in the corner doing three-part harmony. [Laughs.] No, no, none of that.

Chris Brown, Idris Elba, T.I., Michael Ealy and HB beauty Zoe Saldana shine in these screenshots from their upcoming film, “Takers.” We can’t wait!

But word is that it’s been pushed back to a May 14th release date. The project, which was previously titled “Bone Deep,” had been scheduled to arrive next month. “Takers” focuses on a group of criminals who plan a heist at a money depot while looking to shake two detectives hot on their trail.

Be still our hearts! This year, some men caught our eyes more than others – and for good reason (not like fathering multiple children from different women, or having a dozen mistresses on the side). And before the year is up, we’d like to be granted one wish: If we’re lucky enough, we hope to be caught under the mistletoe with, at the very least, one of these 9 men. These men really showed and proved their best qualities in 2009.

9. DEREK JETER: Because, let’s face it, he has one of the best asses in sports and he played a large part in his team, the New York Yankees, landing their 27th World Series win.

8. COMMON: Because he held his own, for as long he could, in “Terminator: Salvation” and after almost 20 years in the business, he’s still making rap music that we don’t feel degraded while listening to. Plus, he’s not afraid to have a strong woman by his side…and we mean, strong.

7. DJIMON HOUNSOU: Because though we’ll never forget him as Janet Jackson’s brief-wearing lover in “Love Will Never Do,” he re-emerged this year as an involved stepfather to Kimora Lee Simmons kids with Russell, pulled off a private wedding, became a first-time father of his own, and always appears to be the perfect gentleman in public.

6. BORIS KODJOE: Because in addition to being half of one of the longest-lasting (and most attractive) couples in Black Hollywood, he just snagged a lead role in NBC’s new spy drama, “Undercovers.” Congrats!

5. MAXWELL: Because he lived up to his highly-anticipated comeback, making our impatience during his hiatus worth while…and he lost none of his swagger or sexiness while out of the spotlight. Thank goodness.

4. IDRIS ELBA: Because he was man enough to endure Beyonce’s terrible acting skills without complaining once! And because we’re looking forward to him starring in “Takers,” alongside Michael Ealy and T.I. (Eye Candy Alert!) Plus, the role requires him to keep his natural British accent! Always a turn-on!

3. LANCE GROSS: Because he’s officially off the market (thanks a lot, Eva!) and we’d like to just get one last magical moment in before the year is up.

2. TREY SONGZ: Because he “Invented Sex” and looked damn good doing it.

1. BARACK OBAMA: Because he made history. ‘Nuff said. (Of course, we’d only wish for this if he was single. We love the Lucky First Lady.)

Here are some excerpts from the interview:

Elba’s take on the film receiving a PG-13 rating …
“The process of making a movie with Beyoncé was unique, just because she’s such a huge superstar. So when I first looked at the script, I thought the film could have and probably should have received an “R” rating on subject matter alone. But Beyoncé has such a responsibility to her younger fans that I believe it was necessary for them not to try certain things because of that responsibility.”

Connecting With Beyonce…
“I think this was a very important role for her, because it was the first time she wasn’t playing a singer. But when we first started taping, it was difficult for us to really connect as artists because she has such a huge machine behind her. So in the early going it felt divided … almost like it was her and her team on one side, and everyone else on the other. But once the cameras started rolling, she really opened up and those walls began to fall. As a result, I really saw her grow as an artist, and I think you’ll be able to see it as well when you watch the film.”
