The former wrestler found out he was HIV positive after a routine pro-wrestling exam. According to VLadTV.com Ohio has a law which requires anyone to reveal that information before having any sexual interaction with a partner.

Some of the statistics that spawned the creation of Hairdressers Against AIDS -  were these facts: HIV/AIDS is the number one killer of black women ages 18-34, 20% of the U.S. population is infected with the disease, but are living in ignorant bliss because they’ve never been tested and 1.2 million America are infected today.

Your first thought might be so how does a hairdresser make any sort of impact on a disease that’s ravaged the African-American community for years? The answer is simple. Stylists are unofficial therapists for the many clients they service in salons and on movie sets. Stylists have the unique opportunity to maximize on client relationships by becoming a resource and educator on preventing the spread of HIV. Just think…a passing conversation about this very topic could unwittingly pass the baton to you so you then spread this message and so on and so on.

Established hairdressers & colorists took quickly to this initiative when they were first approached, however, it was evident that more voices were needed to spread the prevention message, so beauty schools across the nation were also enlisted to advance this cause.

Don’t become a statistic. Get tested regularly.

One of the most common misconceptions about HIV/AIDS is that only homosexuals and drug addicts have the disease. This couldn’t possibly be any more FALSE! HIV/AIDS does not have a face or sexual preference attached to it. It does not come with a certain “look,” it can be impossible to tell if someone has “that nasty woman’s disease” simply by looking at them. Another misconception is that there’s some sort of  maximum number of people you have to sleep with to contract the disease. One time is all it takes people. ONE time. So here is a few things you can do to ensure your protection from HIV/AIDS that are really quite simple. I promise:

1. Get Tested. It’s one of the only ways to make sure BOTH you and your partner is safe. It only takes no more than 20 minutes and there are places that offer free testing, all you have to do is look for free testing in your area.

2.  Wear A Condom. Always, Always, Always wrap it up, no excuses people. Not to mention it poses as 80% protection against HIV/AIDS.

3. Remain In A Monogamous Relationship. The risk for contracting the disease increases with the number sexual partners, therefore it is best to either get tested before sex with a new partner AND wear a condom.

4. Abstinence. It may sound corny and can be extremely difficult to do but it really is the only positive way to make sure your HIV/AIDS test turns up negative.

It is extremely important to protect ourselves as well as our race and always be conscious of your sexual status. Unless you are born with the disease contracting HIV/AIDS is entirely in your control, therefore follow these guidelines and protect yourselves. The first step to getting others to care about their sexual status, is for you to care about yours.

The German pop star that was recently found guilty for knowingly spreading HIV to at least one of her sexual encounters was given a two-year suspended sentence. This judgment was chosen instead of giving her any actual jail time.  28 years old Nadja Benaissa, has known that she was HIV positive since she was 17. Benaissa will also have to do 300 hours of community service.

I personally think that they were entirely too lenient on this woman and part of the leniency I’m sure comes from them feeling sympathy for a young, attractive, popular, Pop star. However, by giving her such a lenient punishment, I fear that they are setting a precedent for the future. More people are being infected with HIV and if they feel that they can continue on with their lives as if they are not HIV positive, putting others in jeopardy and there be no repercussions for their actions then they will. Those without conscious will.

Benaissa was apologetic during the trial. “I made a huge mistake and for that I’m sorry.” These were among the many apologetic statements that she uttered during the trial. She might perhaps truly feel apologetic about her actions at this point but what about when she was having sex with men and not making them aware of her status? It has already been discovered that she has infected at least one man in recent years and had unprotected sex with at least 3 people and did not inform them of her status.  That to me was a malicious act. She went on to explain that her fame made her fearful of revealing her status and that doctors informed her that the odds of her spreading HIV to others were unlikely. I feel that she has passed the blame of responsibility of her actions on to the doctors.

Although I do feel some type of sympathy for Benaissa, I do not feel enough for her to not have to serve any time at all for her crime. Which it indeed was a crime. She knowingly with held her status from someone and had unprotected sex with them and in return gave them HIV. She may have be naïve and beautiful but she is also selfish.  It will be a disappointing effect of this if other HIV positive people went on to be as selfish as her and knowingly spread HIV and in turn were not punished for their crime once they have been outted.  This woman should have served time for this crime.

I also wonder if Benaissa was a man, a regular Joe with HIV who was knowingly having unprotected sex with women and infected at least one, would his punishment be as lenient? Did Benaissa use the naïve damsel in distress move on the court?

How we define the act of murder and the intent to kill may have to be redefined in courts if incidents like this become more of the norm for our society. Nadja Benaissa, 28, former German Pop singer in the girl band No Angels, is charged with causing grevious bodily harm and attempted bodily harm after having unprotected sex with 3 different men and infecting one of them.

How To Avoid Being That Girl

Benaissa had unprotected sex on five occasions between 2000 and 2004 with three people and did not tell them she was infected. She had allegedly known her status since 1999. Benaissa has admitted to not telling sexual partners she was HIV-positive but denied intending to infect anyone. “I am sorry from the heart,” she told the court, according to media reports. One of the three men Benaissa allegedly slept with has since been confirmed as having HIV. He said he went to the doctor after learning of Benaissa’s condition from her aunt, and discovered he had contracted the virus.

5 Reasons Why She Will Never Make You Hubby

I feel remorse for anyone who has been infected with this deadly disease but I do not find Benaissa’s story convincing. If she was aware of her status since 1999 how could she not have purposely been attempting to infect these men? Did she think that if she ignored the disease and lived in denial that it would go away? The thought had to have crossed her mind every time that she allowed these men to enter her body without a condom on that she was putting their lives in jeopardy. It is obvious that she had no intentions on informing them about her condition otherwise her Aunt would not have had to have acted as her conscious and disclosed the information. For that, I think she is guilty as charged and should receive a punishment for basically intentionally taking a man’s life.

The men involved in this case also played a role. These men learned a hard lesson. Not every pretty face is a trust worthy face.  Despite her rock star status they should have protected themselves with her. Also, sometimes you have to use your good god given common sense when entering into a sexual situation and not allow your penis to be the dominant one. A lot of this heartache could have been avoided if they one, used a condom with this woman or two, refrained from having sex with her. Just because a woman is attractive and is willing to have sex with you does not mean that you are obligated to proceed. Sometimes it is okay to say “no thank you” and not be so reactive.

I am not placing full blame on these men because she is at fault in this situation but I am just throwing out some possible alternatives to situations like this happening. Since you cannot always trust that the pretty/handsome face to have your best intentions at heart all people should head this warning. This is a sad story for all parties involved.

World AIDS Day 2009 is just around the corner on December 1. It is an opportunity to reflect on the millions of people who have been victims of this disease and the millions more who are being infected each and every day, across the planet.

It is also an important opportunity for our Black community to remind ourselves of the stakes and to make sure we are educated about a disease that affects us disproportionately in this country and in Africa.

Today is World AIDS Day. Recognized each year on December 1 to raise money, increase awareness, fight prejudice and improve education regarding a leading killer of black men and women.
