As a 20-something-year-old female I’ve done a lot of growing up the past few years and I have to say that Halloween has definitely turned from something that used to be fun and creative to a public display of sluttiness. Since when did it pass as a costume idea to run around in booty shorts and a bare midriff? Why is every costume you can find at the Halloween store a “sexy _____”? Why can’t I just be a regular referee or Little Red Riding Hood without being a sexy one?

Editor’s Note: I tried to look for sexy costumes with BLACK models and there weren’t any. SMH…

My guess is that many people feel Halloween for adults can’t just be about dressing up as something fun, we have to take it an extra step further. However, I feel that it shouldn’t just be women who have to fall into the slut trap. If women are pressured to be something attractive for the Day Of The Dead then men need to step up to the plate and dress up as a hunky firefighter or drop dead gorgeous policeman. Maybe if the fellas did try to be handsome when they dress up they’d have a better chance of hooking up with that cute Playboy bunny.

I don’t have a problem with women wanting to be sexy for Halloween but there’s a fine line between being cute and walking down the street ass-naked. Remember, what you conceal can be more sexy than what you reveal and if you look like a ho then you’re going to be treated like a ho. Is that what you really want?

Here is a cocktail to make at your Halloween bash:

BLACK WIDOW MARTINI

2 oz black vodka
.5 oz Chambord Black Raspberry Liqueur
2 oz blackberry or grape juice
black licorice and sugar for garnish (optional)

Combine all ingredients in an ice-filled cocktail shaker. Shake well and strain into a sugar-rimmed martini glass. Garnish with black licorice and add a plastic black spider to the stem of the martini glass.

1.) Apply a base coat/nail hardener to your nails.

2.) Use an orange nail color as your background to set the tone for the theme–in this case a spider web design.

3.) Use black nail to create small dots by sparingly taping it in various sections of your nails. Only apply four to five dots; you don’t want to add too many or else it will start to look cluttered.

FLIRTY FEATHERED EYELASHES
When we see fluttery, feathered lashes on runway models, they look so pretty. They just don’t translate easily to real life—except on Halloween. Buy strips of feathery faux lashes to complement your costume, or if you’re feeling creative, make custom ones by buying feathers (real or fake) at a craft store. You can cut them into tiny lashlike clumps, dip them in clear lash glue and nestle them into the roots of your real lashes. Gently hold in place until dry.

HUGE HAIR
You can fight frizz on the other 364 days of the year. On Halloween, go with it. Play it up, tease it and think big—really, really big. To create your own pouf-boosters at home, you can use a crimper or curling iron. Just be sure the extensions are heat-safe first, to avoid a scary faux-hair meltdown.

MAJOR (TEMPORARY) TATTOOS
Channel your inner tattoo artist and draw your own temporary designs—they make for a pretty fierce costume on their own. Map out your design using subtle flesh-toned lip pencil. Not artistic? Halloween is rapidly approaching and many of you are scrambling to choose from the left- over costumes that the more timely parents were kind enough to leave behind. Worry you not! HelloBeautiful has surveyed the net for some great alternatives to store-bought costumes that will leave your pockets less strained this Halloween season.  Check out these cool costumes that you and your child can make at home:

1.) A Bunch of Grapes

All this costume requires is about 2 dozen purple balloons, a simple purple outfit and a green hat.  Have your child dress in all purple, then blow up the balloons and stick them to the upper part of your child’s body.  Finish off the costume with a green hat, which you can decorate with simple art supplies to look like a grape stem.

2.) Chicken

Cut the sleeves off a white sweatshirt; fold in and glue raw edges.

Starting at bottom of sweatshirt, hot-glue a white feather boa to it, wrapping it around and up to the neck (you’ll need one boa for a baby, two for toddlers on up.)

Hat: To make chicken’s comb, stuff fingers of a pair of red rubber gloves with Poly-Fil or batting. Then use one cutoff sleeve for a hat: Fold over and glue raw top edge. Then glue the stuffed gloves, end to end, between the folded edges of the hat. Put hat on your child’s head and cut the open end to desired length, leaving an extra inch to fold in and glue down.

Add leggings or tights (striped leggings here are from hannaandersson.com), red or orange long-sleeve T-shirt, yellow gloves, and yellow rubber boots.

3.) Baby Lion

This is a great costume for babies and toddlers. And it might just be the easiest costume. Ever. Simply buy a mop (the old-school stringy kind). Remove the top, and attach it to a creme colored hat.  Dress your little one in a creme outfit and paint some whiskers on his face and voila! Baby Lion. The mop top will give the appearance of an instant lion’s mane. Use piece of rope to create a tail.

4.) Corn on the Cob

For this costume, you’ll need hot glue or fabric glue,  scissors and a tape measure.

Cut the sleeves off a green sweatshirt. Turn in the armholes and glue raw edges. Next, give 3 paper egg-carton bottoms a coat of yellow paint. When dry, glue to front of sweatshirt for kernels. Cut 1 yard of green felt in half. Pull on felt to create irregular edges. Fold and glue along each side of egg cartons, as shown. Glue green pipe cleaners to the back of felt at the top to help the “husk” tips stand up.

For the hat: Measure child’s head and cut a sleeve to fit, leaving an extra inch at the top. Cut a bunch of raffia and bundle together. Wrap a strand around base of bundle to keep it together; glue to hat for corn silk.

5.) Baby Sheep

To make this costume you will need an old sweatshirt, lots of cotton balls, a white hat, black & white felt, a black shirt and black pants. Cut the sleeves off of the old sweatshirt and paste cotton balls generously all over it.  Do the same for the white hat. Cut two ear shaped pieces of felt and add ach them to the hat.  Have your child wear the black shirt/tights under the cotton-covered sweatshirt, along with the hat.

10 “Healthiest” Halloween Candies

Vampire’s Punch (Serves 12)
18 oz. SKYY Infusions Cherry
8 oz. Lime Juice
6 oz. Cranberry Juice
2.5 oz. Grenadine
7UP
Fresh cherries, pits removed

Wash and remove pits and stems from fresh cherries, and muddle in cocktail shaker. Combine the rest of the ingredients except 7UP in bowl and stir. Top with 7UP and muddled cherries.

Ghostly Coolada
2 oz. SKYY Infusions Pineapple
1 oz. Cream of Coconut or Coconut Milk
0.5 oz. Lime Juice
2 Circular Chocolates

Place all ingredients except chocolate in cocktail shaker with ice and shake vigorously. Strain into a cocktail glass, and float chocolate circles on the top of the drink for your Ghostly Coolada’s eyes.

What they don’t want is for their child to indulge in all the free candy that comes their way.

We’ve compiled a list of 10 of the “healthiest” Halloween sweets, so keep these in mind when stocking your cabinets for Trick-Or-Treaters, and when picking and choosing what’s suitable for your own kid.

Jolly Ranchers: Three of these hard candies have 70 calories, no fat and 11 grams of sugar. Plus, they take a long time to eat, meaning you’ll eat fewer pieces overall.

Blow Pops: This 18-gram candy-gum combo has 60 calories, no fat and 13 grams of sugar.

Gobstoppers: Nine pieces of this everlasting treat have 60 calories, no fat and 14 grams of sugar.

Pixy Stix: There are 60 calories, 0 grams of fat and 15 grams of sugar in seven straws of this fruit-flavored candy.

Candy Corn: 22 pieces of this ultimate Halloween candy has 140 calories, no fat and 32 grams of sugar.

Tootsie Pop: This lollipop with the Tootsie Roll center is only 60 calories. Only have one, though!

Whoppers: Unlike Milk Duds, these are covered in what tastes like real chocolate, and are just 10 calories per ball. Yum.

Almond M&Ms: No trans-fats, plus almonds contain omega fatty acids, which are important in cell health.

Junior Mints or Peppermint Patties: These mint-filled chocolates are lower in fat than many other cocoa-based treats, getting only 25 percent of their calories from fat.

Dark Chocolate: It’s loaded with anti-oxidants that promote a health heart.

One of accused this year is the mega store chain corporation Kohls. Kohl’s has pulled a Halloween wig from its website after outrage broke out on the store’s Facebook page over the name. The “Ghetto Fab” wig which is available in blond and brunette, is a poofy little wig with tight ringlets that is supposed to be attached onto the back of one’s head. What makes the wig ghetto or fabulous is not clear. However, Facebookers were not happy about this Halloween theme. The people took to their Facebook page to complain about the costume.

“I am in no ways ‘ghetto’ and neither is my kinky hair,” wrote one poster. Another poster stated “A “Ghetto Fab” wig for Halloween? Seriously, Kohl’s?!,” wrote one poster. “I find the term “ghetto fabulous” TASTELESS!” Meanwhile Kohls reacted to the controversy and racist labels by initially changing the name to “Curly Wig” on their website. Still worried over more back lash, the company decided to pull the wig from online and in stores completely. The VP of Kohls public relations later issued a statement where he claimed that the wig “in no way reflects the values of our company”.

Kohls is not the first major chain store that has let their racist impressions of minorities slip during Halloween. Last year Target was scrutinized by the Latino community for having their “illegal alien” costume. The costume showed a space alien carrying a green card and included a prison-like jumpsuit with “Illegal Alien” stamped across the front. Target says that the costume was never intended to be on the website and blames the mistake on human error during data entry.

Target spokesman Joshua Thomas said the item was put on its website by mistake when an employee entered a wrong number into the system. Target has a strict review process with its vendors, he said. “We apologize. This was never intended to be part of our assortment. We are moving as quickly as possible to remove it from our website.” Others are not too sure if this was a mistake made by Target or a costume that was chosen in bad taste.

For those of you who have no interest in donning an itty bitty ” sexy cop costume,” or a huge elaborate bride of Frankenstein costume for Halloween, but still want to be festive, you’re in luck. There is a happy Halloween medium! You can attend the hottest holiday parties without having to choose between looking like a slutty something-or-the-other, or an overdone Halloween freak.

1) Pick A Look
What image do you want to portray this Halloween? Decide what kind of look you want to go with, then coordinate the next steps accordingly. You can be Gothic, glam, 80s or whatever else your mind can conceive of. Choose your signature for the holiday, then head to your closet.

2) Outfit
Instead of going out and buying a costume, look to your own closet for Halloween inspiration. Pick out an outfit that is fun and outgoing. Also, make sure it goes with the theme that you picked. How To: Carve A Pumpkin

Check out these celeb suggestions:

1) Select a fresh pumpkin. Some folks prefer their pumpkins low and round, while others like them tall and oval-shaped.

2) Draw a circle or hexagon on top of the pumpkin in preparation for making an opening large enough for your hand to reach through.

3) Cut through the stem end of the pumpkin along your outline with a sharp knife or pumpkin-carving tool. Use a back-and-forth slicing motion to cut through the thick, tough skin.

4) Remove the stem end, which will act as a cap, making sure you scrape off any seeds or pulp.

5) Use a large spoon to scoop out the seeds and pulp from inside the pumpkin. Hold the spoon by its bowl to get extra leverage while scooping.

6) Draw a pattern for the face on the clean pumpkin with a felt-tip pen, or scribe the lines into the skin using a pencil. Be sure to make the eyes, nose and mouth large enough; you’ll have a hard time cutting out tiny features when you’re using a big knife blade to saw through tough skin.

7) Follow your pattern as you cut all the way through the pumpkin.

8) Push the cut-out features gently from the inside of the pumpkin and discard the pieces.

9) Place a votive candle inside the pumpkin to create an eerie glow.

6 Ways To Use A Pumpkin This Fall

October is in full swing and that means it’s that time to start carving pumpkins and baking pies. Except, pumpkin pie isn’t the only thing you can make from pumpkins. Here’s a great recipe for a delicious pumpkin cheese cake plus other great ideas on how to cook with pumpkins!

Pumpkin Cheesecake

Ingredients:

Crust:

• 1 cup (100 grams) graham cracker crumbs
• 1/2 cups (50 grams) finely ground ginger cookies, homemade or store bought
• 1 tablespoon (15 grams) granulated white sugar
• 4 – 5 tablespoons (56 – 60 grams) unsalted butter, melted

Cheesecake:

• 2/3 cup (145 grams) light brown sugar
• 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon
• 1/4 teaspoon ground ginger
• 1/8 teaspoon ground cloves
• 1/8 teaspoon ground nutmeg
• 1/4 teaspoon salt
• 1 pound (454 grams) cream cheese, room temperature
• 3 large eggs
• 1 teaspoon pure vanilla extract
• 1 cup pure pumpkin puree (canned or homemade)

Topping:

• 1 cup sour cream
• 1 teaspoon pure vanilla extract
• 1/4 cup (50 grams) granulated white sugar

Directions:

Preheat oven to 350 degrees F (177degrees C) and place the oven rack in the center of the oven. Butter (or spray with a non stick spray) an 8 inch (20 cm) spring form pan.

For Crust: In a medium sized bowl combine the graham cracker crumbs, finely ground ginger snap cookies, sugar, and melted butter. Press the mixture onto the bottom of the prepared spring form pan. Cover and refrigerate while you make the cheesecake filling.

For Cheesecake: In a separate bowl, stir to combine the sugar, cinnamon, ginger, cloves, nutmeg, and salt.

In the bowl of your electric mixer (or with a hand mixer), on low speed, beat the cream cheese until smooth (about 2 minutes). Gradually add the sugar mixture and beat until creamy and smooth (1 to 2 minutes). Add the eggs, one at a time, beating well (about 30 seconds) after each addition. Scrape down the sides of the bowl and beat in the vanilla extract and pumpkin puree.

Pour the filling over the chilled ginger crust and place the spring form pan on a baking sheet to catch any drips. Place a cake pan, filled halfway with hot water, on the bottom shelf of your oven to moisten the air. Bake the cheesecake for 30 minutes and then reduce the oven temperature to 325 degrees C (165 degrees C) and continue to bake the cheesecake for another 10 – 20 minutes, or until the edges of the cheesecake are puffed but the center is still wet and jiggles when you gently shake the pan.

Meanwhile whisk together the sour cream, vanilla extract and sugar. Pour the sour cream mixture over the top of the baked cheesecake and rotate the pan slightly to evenly distribute the topping. Return the cheesecake to the oven and bake about 8 minutes to set the topping. Remove from oven and place on a wire rack to cool. Loosen the cake from the pan by running a sharp knife around the inside edge (this will help prevent the cake from cracking). Then place a piece of aluminum foil over the top of the pan so the cheesecake will cool slowly. When completely cooled, cover and refrigerate at least eight hours, preferably overnight, before serving.
