Bad hair days are no fun. But before you reach for your baseball cap, or scarf, follow our quick-fix tips to regain control of your hair style.

Pump Up Your Pony

Ponytails are usually the go-to when it comes to unruly hair. But more often than not, they can come off a bit casual. To dress yours up, bobby pin a 2-3 inch center section of your hair away from your forehead. Then pull your hair up and voila! You’ve added bit of volume and a hint of sophistication to your pony.

Hiding Split Ends

Straightening your hair will put your split ends on display, so bump those ends under with a curling iron instead. That will conceal them until your next hair appointment; a trim is the only to get rid of split ends altogether.

Limp Noodles

Avoid using conditioners and styling products if you have fine and straight hair. This will only weigh your hair down.

When All Else Fails

Choose an attractive hat to complement the day’s clothing and conceal unruly hair.

HAIR BY SAM BROCATO SALON

Tons of hair and makeup looks were seen on the catwalk at last week’s Fall 2010 Fashion Week in New York City. To get this 70’s-Inspired Ponytail Twist from the NIMA presentation (Hair by Sam Brocato Salon) just follow these steps:

As described by Sam: THAT 70’s SHOW. Take Lauren Hutton’s hair from the 70s, mix it with Blake Liveley’s waves of today, and you get the inspiration behind the hairstyles at the NIMA Fall 2010 Fashion Week Presentation. “We tried to create a look that was very modern and Soho chic, yet still had a 70’s feel to it,” says Sam Brocato.

Sam and Matthew Fugate from the Sam Brocato Salon give step-by-step tips on how to achieve this trendy style at home.

STEP 1: GETTING READY FOR PRIME TIME

“I prepped hair with Brocato Back to the Beach Spray to give it volume,” says Sam. After spritzing the models’ hair with the spray, Sam used a blow dryer to set the wavy look.

Matthew Fugate used dry shampoo to add texture to the models’ hair. “I wanted to dirty it up and give it that ‘I just got out of bed look’,” says Matthew.

Note: [I] found a great dry shampoo called Black Hair Powder ($35, bumbleandbumble.com) that gives you the texture descibed here. Itf you’re wondering if it works on coarse hair, it does. The ideal use of this product is on oily and less than clean hair. Just be careful to protect your clothing before application because it may leave spots behind. But no worries because spots can easily be removed with soap and water.

STEP 2: ON THE SIDE

“Nima’s collection had strong design elements on the right shoulder and we decided that a low ponytail that fell on the left side was a perfect complement to the clothes, “ says Sam.

“Using a large barrel curling iron, I took different strands of the hair and curled it to give it more volume and texture, “explains Matthew. “I created a deep side part and used a clear elastic to secure the low ponytail.”

To give the ponytail added chic factor, the stylists used strands of the models hair and wrapped it around the elastic.

Tip: Avoid tugging your hair strands by using elastics that glide on and off easily. A good choice are Sephora Collection Snag-Free Hair Elastics ($3.50 each, 3 colors, sephora.com).

STEP 3: LOCK IT DOWN …read more

The spring 2010 shows were nothing short of spectacular.

Designers balanced extravagance with eccentricity to create looks that were stunning and unique. As amazing as the garments were, the corresponding hair and makeup looks very much outdid the couture.

Here is our list of the top 4 shows that took hair and makeup to the extreme this past week:

1.) Fantasy Land Backstage at Jean Paul Gaultier Couture

This show was a blend of high fashion and the Bronner Brothers hair show. The complex hair styles and bold looks were both appealing and entertaining!

2.) Rio Fashion Week’s Auslander show

This totally abstract look was a white-face in a cage with a mohawk. Strange, bizarre, alarming. But are you not entertained?

3.) Chanel Couture

These extravagant coifs capture Chanel’s signature romanticism in a big heart-shaped way. This hair is definitely art.

4.) Givenchy

This French fashion house showcased a dark makeup look in its Couture show. Capitalizing on the new Vampire craze, Givenchy models wore very dark smokey eyes with red lips. While dark eyes and lips would never work together in real life, its definitely a fab runway look.

5.) Christian Dior Couture

Dior went for the drama this season with bold, overdone almost kabuki style makeup. Pale powder, deep red lips and striking blue and green shadow characterize the Dior models’ makeup look. We love the drama!

Take a look at some more outrageous looks from a few of our favorite 2010 Couture shows.

Why Guys Love It: From an evolutionary perspective, guys subconsciously like hair that looks clean and healthy. “Hair that’s in top condition shows that you have a balanced diet and good health — signs of an ideal mate,” says biological anthropologist Helen Fisher PhD.

How to Get It: Work a silicone-based straightening serum through damp hair before blow-drying. Clip locks in 4-6 sections depending on how thick your hair is. Then tackle one at a time with a paddle brush and a blow-dryer equipped with a nozzle pointed straight down. Finish with a light shine spray.

Bombshell Blowout

Why Guys Love It: Every guy loves to run their fingers through smooth, shiny hair. “Shine draws guys in because it’s a sign of youth and vitality,” adds Fisher.

How to Get It: Apply smoothing cream to damp hair. While blow-drying, use a medium-sized round brush and work from the bottom layers up. Pin the top portion out of your way and point the nozzle down to flatten the cuticle. When your mane is dry, mist on a thermal-straightening spray (the kind heat activates like Dove Heat Defense Therapy Mist, $5). Glide a flatiron over strands to kill any flyaways and seal in silkiness. Rake a tiny drop of shine serum through ends with your fingers for a superglossy movie-star finish.

Bad Girl Bump

Why Guys Love It: The small pouf (and we’re not talking The Snookie here) adds a subtle dose of glamour to any look. That’s why it’s such a hot red-carpet go-to. “Wearing your hair up bares your most seductive features, like your neck and shoulders,” explains celeb stylist Ken Paves.

How to Get It: Part dry, straight hair from above the arches of each brow back to the crown to create a mini ponytail. Twist the top of the tail, and push hair forward to create volume, then secure with a large barrette or bobby pins. Gather the rest into a bun and mist with a holding spray (try Vavoom Shapemaker Shaping Spray, $15).

Sexy Shag

Why Guys Love It: This style shows off the neck and frames your face with its short bob. “Short and choppy, the new bob accentuates your cheekbones and eyes,” says celeb stylist Oscar Blandi.

How to Get It: Start with a protective styling spray to maintain shine like Got2b Guardian Angel Protect N’ Blow Out Lotion and Gloss Finish, $6. Then, divide hair into two-inch sections and blow-dry straight. Finish by using a flat-iron to flip out your ends slightly.

Relaxed Updo

Why Guys Love It: Bun looks simple and elegant yet still touchable. The hair that falls into the face prevents the updo from looking too severe. “Men couldn’t care less if your strands are perfectly styled and neat. In fact, he might like you more with some wildness or bedhead, since it shows you’re carefree and relaxed,” says Fisher.

How to Get It: Make a low side ponytail, leaving a few pieces loose around your face. Twist the length of your ponytail, and wrap it into a figure-eight shape — smoosh it up against your scalp, and tuck the ends into the loop. Insert a few hairpins or tiny barrettes to lock it all in place. Finish with a mist of light-weight hair spray that’ll give you extra hold minus any stickiness, like Paul Mitchell Worked Up, $15.

Sexy Side Pony

Why Guys Love It: “An asymmetrical updo is universally flattering for all face shapes because nobody’s features are perfectly aligned,” says NYC celeb stylist Nathaniel Hawkins. That means a side pony is an easy way to make sure no one notices your flaws. This look is soft without looking sloppy or overdone.

How to Get It: Rub on a smoothing gel like L’Oreal Professional Texture Expert Gelee Riche, $20 through wet strands. Blow-dry hair over to one side to create hold. Then use your fingers to gather hair low under the ear and secure with an elastic band (keep it loose so the bun doesn’t look too prissy).

Schoolgirl Pony

Why Guys Love It: Play up your naughty cheerleader with this easy updo. The look works best when the pony is a bit relaxed. “Loose hair with tons of movement is such a hot look,” says Tresemme stylist Nathaniel Hawkins.

How to Get It : Set hair with styling cream then curl with a medium barrel iron from ears to ends. Using a fine-tooth comb, sweep hair up, secure it directly above your crown, then wrap a few strands around the elastic. Mist on hair spray for hold.

If there’s one thing that redeems the terrible process of breaking up with someone, it’s the transformation-rich recovery period that follows.

Don’t get us wrong: Breakups are a sad, sorry business, and even the cleanest ones entail some kind of annoying consequence or follow-up, like adjusting to an empty bed or having to return that awesome space heater he left at your apartment. The key to making the most of your breakup is engaging in life-affirming activities: little things that will empower you start over and set out into the great unknown (singlehood—eek!) with courage and resilience. Resist binge-drinking, rebound guys or ex sex, and consider these fun post-breakup activities instead:

1) Vacationing

Breakups are stifling, and there’s no reason to sit around your house, marinating in everyday reminders of your ex, when you can be climbing the Great Wall of China or sipping mimosas in a European villa. If you’re afraid of vacationing alone, bring a friend. If anything, you might meet a handsome stranger who can further distract you from what’s-his-face back home.

Does a relationship age gap matter?

2) Chopping off your hair

It’s clichéd, we know, but the beautiful thing about breakups is that they provide you with a handy excuse for indulging in all kinds clichés for the sake of recovery. Makeovers help you start over by serving as a physical reminder that you’ve made a commitment to move on and change for the better. Remember how cute Reese Witherspoon’s breakup haircut looked after her divorce from Ryan Philippe? Get thee to a salon, long-tressed one! Just remember to let your stylist handle the sharp tools—haircuts are fun, but you don’t want to go down the Britney Spears route.
