In the last few months alone, Miss Fenty has rocked a variety of big hairstyles in a sultry fire-red, a bohemian head of brown curls, and most recently, a sleek rocker inspired blonde ‘do. From her “Pon de Replay” girl-next-door brown locks to her career-changing black asymmetrical bob, Rihanna is an innovative and carefree trailblazer in both her music and style.

A hot date is the perfect opportunity to take your look up a notch. Start with one of these sexy celebrity hairstyles—they’re easier than they look.

DEFINED RINGLETS
This style is an easy way to give naturally curly hair some definition and shape. Finger-comb curl cream through damp hair (the amount you use depends on how much hair you have, but don’t be afraid to really use the product. We like Moroccanoil Intense Curl Cream. Let it air-dry, or blow-dry it using the diffuser, then polish curls with a small-barrel curling iron. Pick out the naturally existing coils, wrap them around the iron, then spray them with shine spray. Don’t shake it out with your fingers—you want these curls to be tight and bouncy.

GLAMOROUS WAVES
If your date is somewhere fancy—say a big party or a night at the theater—these glossy ripples are the perfect way to complement a great dress. After blow-drying hair with a round brush to create volume, create a deep side part. Set hair in hot rollers and let them cool for 15 minutes. Take them down, then comb out with a brush that’s been spritzed with shine spray.

SLEEK CENTER PART
This casual style is first-date hair because you don’t look like you’re trying too hard, but it’s still polished. To get hair this straight, smooth an anti-frizz serum, such as Alterna Caviar Anti-Aging Color Hold Polishing Serum, over damp hair before blow-drying it with a paddle brush. Finish the hair off with a flatiron to make it look shinier and smoother.

LOOSE WAVES
Here’s one good reason you should copy this hairstyle on your next date: It’s sexy, make-out hair. To get it, blow-dry your hair with a diffuser attachment. Then, working with one-inch sections, wrap hair around a medium-barrel curling iron, starting at ear level and leaving the ends out. Let the hair cool in coils, then flip your head over and shake them out into soft waves. GET THE REST HERE!

When winter comes, people tend to become so careless, their hair and clothes get stuck in a rut. But you can break out of your everyday, ordinary hair ‘do with these 5 styles. See more at Glamour.

The Touchable Half-Up Curly ‘Do like Garcelle Beauvais
If you find your curly haircut springing up, down and all around, just pull the top portion back into a sleek half-up ‘do and we doubt you’ll ever have another bad hair day, lovelies!

The Glam Mini Cornrows like Joy Bryant
Instead of braiding cornrows all the way around, add a few subtle braids to the sides of your center part. Take a piece of hair about as wide as your index finger and braid from the top to halfway down. Secure with an invisible hair tie and spray all over with a shine-enhancing spray like Bumble & Bumble Shine Spray.

The Twisty Short-Hair Updo like Katerina Graham
Spray a styling product like Nexxus Root Extent on the roots of wet hair, blow-dry and curl all around using a 1-inch-barrel curling iron to help give hair a bit of swirl. After teasing the crown, take random 3-inch sections, swirl hair—like the shape of a cinnamon bun—and secure with bobby pins. The fringe should be gently teased, smoothed with your fingers and spritzed with shine-enhancing hairspray.

The Styled Pixie Haircut like Halle Berry
Add a dime-size amount of sculpting paste such as Shu Uemura Art of Hair Shape Paste’s to freshly shampooed hair to define the layers. Take a mini flatiron to give a few pieces a little bit of a bend. If halfway through the evening you notice your cute hair deflating, keep a mini bottle of alcohol-free hand sanitizer gel to dab on to reactivate your hair products.

The Mod French Braid like Eva Longoria
Tuck the tail of a French braid underneath to create this gorgeous updo. Start by making a thin rectangular section on the top of your head from hairline to crown and clip it away. Divide the rest of the hair to make a loose French braid, secure with a clear elastic and fold the tail under using bobby pins. Remove your clip, brush back and blast generously with hairspray.<a title="5 Hot Do-It-Yourself Holiday Hairstyles!

After two months of becoming acquainted with my natural hair, I realize that several notions about natural hair and its care just aren’t true. Before I went completely natural, I had ideas of ways my hair and beauty routine would be different, even easier certain ways. But my hair proved many of those ideas to be totally wrong.

I thought I would:

1. Wake up feeling free and liberated …
Although having natural hair is liberating and has its perks, sometimes I miss my longer, straight hair that falls to my shoulders and blows in the wind.

2. Just wash and go …
Whoever came up with this saying forgot to name a few steps in between. I must wash, condition, apply leave-in conditioner, oil, and styling product, then go. And I have to wait 4-6 hours for my hair to air dry completely.

3. Look like a boy …
I’m relieved this thought proved false for me! Although I think that women with pronounced bone structures are gorgeous, I’m glad that my face is soft and feminine enough to balance a short, somewhat bold cut.

4. Wear big earrings to feminize my look …
Since I wear glasses (cat-eye frames), wearing big earrings looks too over-the-top. My face can’t handle two statement pieces. So I’m stuck wearing studs and small hoops, unless I want to draw tons of attention.

5. Walk in light rain without an umbrella …
Sprinkles and sparse showers seem harmless enough, but my hair is moisture sensitive. So if my hair is already dry, even a few droplets turn my cute curls and coils into fuzzy frizzies.

Hair color has the power to make us sad, happy, match how adventurous we’re feeling or make us feel demure & sexy. Although I prefer Rihanna’s black phase, she balked at safe and rocked “in-your-face” bright red hair in 2011, while in sharp contrast, Ms. Angela Bassett wowed us with subtle brown highlights that accentuated her chocolate complexion.

For those of you looking to emulate RiRi’s red, don’t do it on the cheap! Leave hydrogen peroxide – a bleaching agent that preps your strands for your new hair color – to the professionals who know how to use it or you may end up bleaching yourself bald. Why? Because peroxide weakens the hair shaft and could result in significant hair breakage. Not on my watch, ladies!

Let’s make a deal…you leave the bottle of hair peroxide to the salon professionals and HKI will clue you in on 100% reliable, at-home hair color products that won’t damage your hair and are peroxide-free…

Bigen Permanent Hair Color ($6.49, beauty supply stores) is an affordable permanent hair color line created with no ammonia and requires no hydrogen peroxide to deliver incredibly rich and natural color in spades, especially if you’re trying to cover up your grays. So how long does the color last? The color lasts for what seems like forever, but you should plan on reapplying… read more.

Fall and winter bring changes in nature, fashion, and even hair maintenance! For instance, going outside with damp hair can cause you to become ill. Also, the cold, dry weather can extract moisture from your hair, making it brittle and prone to breakage. But wearing protective hairstyles prevents the weather from having such harsh effects on your delicate hair.

The main purpose of protective styling is to preserve your hair’s health and length. Protective styles such as braids and twists, wigs and weaves, and head scarves and hats require minimal manipulation to your own hair and allow the strands to be covered from the cold. However, moisturizing your hair and allowing it to breathe are still vital.

Tip: To avoid stressing your strands and scalp irritation associated with repetitive styling, try rotating regularly between different protective styles.

Ladies, I’m sure at one time or another you’ve had to deal with this scenario..you have a friend, co-worker or even a family member who has a weave but something is just not right…the hair is not blended properly, the texture is all wrong but you’re afraid to speak your mind. Here are some tips on how to achieve a natural look while wearing a weave:

1) Try to match the hair to YOUR hair and hair color. Ladies if your hair is not bone straight, please don’t waste your money and get the super straight hair. You want your weave to look natural. If you want to go lighter, you can always color your hair to achieve this by using a temporary or permanent dye. If you’re going to spend the money, get good quality hair, after all this is an investment.

Let’s Talk Hair! See What Women Just Like You Are Saying

2) Blend, Blend, Blend. If you get a full weave and you leave out some of your hair for a more natural look, there are a few ways to style it so that it will blend with the hair weaved in. Invest in a curling iron or flat iron. Make sure you curl or flat iron the hair so it blends easier.

3) Maintain. Take care of your weave the same way you would with your natural hair, and it will last for months. Make sure you comb it out before washing and avoid using alcohol and harsh products when you wash, condition and style. If you have the extra money, go to the person who weaved your hair and have them wash and style it, this way you know it’s been take care of correctly.

You hair is a reflection of who you are, treat it with care and it will last long and look very natural.

There are two types of women in this world: those who have bangs and will probably die with them, and those who are just dying to grow the damn things out. But since the average fringe takes six months to a year to grow out fully, slicking your hair back into a ponytail every day can become a bore.

STYLE IT WELL
When your bangs reach your eyebrows, it’s all about control. Those with coarse, wavy hair need a little pomade to weigh it down, while fine hair responds best to a dime-size amount of gel that’s got some alcohol to shape and tame flyaways.

Once your bangs have reached the bridge of your nose, apply a styling lotion and curl the fringe up and back with a round brush. Gravity alone will help the hair fall into a sexy wave.

And by all means, experiment with different parts—if you usually create one in the middle, a side part can make bangs look less like the center of attention.

After one month of having completely natural hair, I have learned more and more about myself, how people perceive me, and how to care for my hair in its natural state.

Although I doubted whether or not I could pull off an extremely short haircut, I went through with the big chop without tears or hesitation. And I was somewhat nervous to wear my short, coily hair in public, but I quickly overcame my fear. Chopping most of my hair off and publicly showing my teeny weeny afro has definitely added to my self-confidence.

Hair, Makeup & Nails: The 8 Best Beauty Combos From The Fall Runways [PHOTOS]

I’ve realized that if I emit confidence, others will respond in a generally positive way. People are attracted to the portrayal of strength and character; they admire it, regardless of how bold or crazy the hair, makeup, or clothes one wears. So not worrying about what others think has actually resulted in numerous compliments from friends, family, and strangers, which further encourage me in my natural hair journey.

One month in, I have settled into a hair regimen that is simple, yet effective. By researching products and practices, I was able to adopt an easy routine that works well for me. I wash and condition my hair every 2-3 days. Afterward, I use a leave-in conditioner, essential oils, and a moisturizer to nourish my kinky, curly hair. Some days, I apply styling gel to wet hair to provide extra curl definition.

Overall, I have no regrets, and I am happy with my decision to grow naturally textured hair. Though I can’t wait for my hair to grow longer, I am enjoying the ease, compliments, and self-assurance that come with my short and natural hair.

When a woman with chemically processed hair decides that she wants to go natural, she may consider doing the big chop. To ‘big chop’ or ‘BC’ is to chop off the majority of one’s hair, which is relaxed, while leaving only the new growth, which is natural.

Although many women of color are deciding to do the big chop, it is not the only option for those wishing to grow healthy and natural hair. Short or long term transitioning from relaxed to natural hair is also a popular option.

I tried transitioning for a little over three months, but I am incredibly happy with my decision do my own big chop a few weeks ago. And if you are thinking of doing the big chop, here are a few tips on how to make your experience less stressful and more enjoyable.

1. Ask an encouraging, supportive friend to join in on the fun. Positive energy will put you at ease, and every experience is better with a friend to share it with.

2. Research hairstyles for short, natural hair beforehand. After you big chop, you will probably be left with a TWA (teeny weeny afro). And if you have to go to work, school, or anywhere else the next day, you will definitely want to already have some ideas of hairstyles that will work for your new hair length and texture.

Bye Bye Relaxed Hair, Hello Natural Hair!

3. Buy necessary products before cutting your hair. Unless you don’t mind going out with an untamed mane, be sure to have moisturizers, styling products and utensils, and other materials already on hand.

4. Ask someone you trust to cut your hair. Whether it be your stylist, a relative, or even yourself, make sure that you communicate how important this haircut is to you. Determine and share your vision for your cut and style to ensure a good outcome.

Why Can’t Black Women Do Their Own Hair Anymore?

5. Remember, it’s only hair. It grows back, so try to enjoy your short hair while it lasts. And hair doesn’t define your beauty — you do. So go ahead and rock your natural hair! But keep in mind that it’s what’s on the inside that counts.

“My hair won’t grow! There isn’t a stylist on earth who hasn’t heard these very words from a client or two. You might’ve even been the client who uttered these words not just to your stylist but to your bathroom mirror with an audible whimper nonetheless because your six-inch length hair in January is still just six inches in June. WTF!

Side-stepping the hair plug option, celebrity stylist Sophia Alston offers her insight into how to get to your hair into the best possible condition so you can manage slow growing hair. But, first some trivia – how long does hair grow in a month? The answer is half an inch!

According to Sophia there a few things you can do to maintain the health of your hair, one of them being to use proper shampoos and conditioners; her favorites are Joico Moisture Recovery Shampoo & Moisture Recovery Conditioner (drugstore.com) because these products combine many ingredients like jojoba oil which provides the ultimate in moisture replenishment for hair that “becomes dry because of chemicals like relaxers and the [mere] harshness of the environment.”

When I first thought of ‘going natural’ in January 2011, I quickly decided against it; I opted to continue my regular relaxer regimen. After all, it worked for ten years. But during my past three years in college, I have found it difficult, frustrating and nearly impossible to grow and maintain a healthy head of relaxed hair.

So when June rolled around and my hair was still suffering from the relaxing process and heat damage, I knew it was about time to give my natural hair a chance. I did my research by reading natural hair blogs and watching lots of natural hair videos on YouTube. The women on these websites were quite knowledgeable and encouraging; I felt I was finally ready to embark on my natural hair journey.

Although initially, I thought I couldn’t bare to cut all of my relaxed hair off, managing my two hair textures (new growth and relaxed ends) proved too aggravating! So on August 1, 2011, after three months of transitioning, I asked my mom to chop off all of my chemically altered hair.

We love summer, but potential health hazards seem to be everywhere, from jellyfish stings to hyperactive armpits to fried, frizzy hair…here’s how to get through the bikini season unscathed.

Bloat – Being on your feet for long periods of time (standing in line at the amusement park, for example) can lead to swelling and bloat. If you can poke the swollen area with your finger and leave an imprint, chances are, you have something called pitting edema. The best treatment? “Get off your feet and elevate your lower extremities above your heart level (lie flat on your back with a few pillows under your feet).”

Fried hair – Between the sun’s harmful rays, the ocean air and chlorine, bad hair and summer go hand-in-hand. How can we protect our hair and still look pretty in the process? Rinse your hair as soon as you get out of the pool and look for products that have an SPF, such as leave-in conditioners, styling products and some hairsprays. Also avoid products that contain alcohol, as they will dry out your hair faster in the sun. To keep your hair protected, tie it back into a bun or low ponytail. Better yet, wear a hat to prevent wrinkles, too!

Heat rash – Heat rash is your body’s way of telling you to get out of the heat and into the AC. Better yet, strip down and take a cool bath with oatmeal derivatives and pop an antihistamine. A mild steroid cream (1 percent hydrocortisone) may also help alleviate the annoying symptoms.

Nasty pits – Keep mini-deodorants in your handbag and reapply as necessary. You can even cleanse the area with towelettes before you reapply. Too clunky for your classy clutch? Try putting a spare deodorant in your car or your desk drawer at work. You’ll be sundress ready in no time. GET THE REST AT SELF.

I love everything about summer – except what the weather does to my hair. Some days it is just too hot to do my hair, or even attempt to make it look cute. Instead, I throw on a headband or clip and pretend I spent hours trying to get the perfect ‘do. (Some days I pull it off better than others, but that’s besides the point). Either way I am stress free about my hair and I can enjoy the sun, pool and the cocktail in my hand.

Black men have always seemed to have something against women with shorter hair. While I won’t make a general statement and say that black men have a fear that a woman will lose her beauty if she goes and makes “the big chop” I will say it certainly seems that way. I recently read an article on Vibe Vixen asking one of the many million dollar questions amongst the African American community and that is, “Do Men Really Prefer Women With Long Hair?”

This truly seems to be the million dollar question as it cuts directly straight to the core of some women of color’s source of self esteem and self confidence, our hair. As mentioned in the article, if were in a relationship whenever the idea of cutting our hair comes up some men will have absolutely no parts of their woman cutting their hair, they won’t even hear of it. So one of the first things a woman does after a break-up is go for the big chop. Is it a symbol of our independence? A staple of our individuality? Or simply the result of being a trendsetter? Who knows, but it does seem as though a lot of black men have a problem with the idea of a woman cutting her hair?

Check out Vibe Vixen’s full article here!

Also, fellas here is your chance to speak out, what is your take on women with short hair?

Does your skin immediately sting or turn red when you apply makeup or skin care products? If yes, then you have sensitive skin. In many cases, the ingredients *sulfates and *parabens are the reasons why your skin reacts so negatively. Is it too much to ask for a beauty product that won’t cause you unbearable discomfort when applied? For a time it was, but some well-known and some not so well-known cosmetics companies rose to the challenge and created products that women with sensitive skin can use without even thinking twice because they’re made without the chemicals that have been proven to cause irritation.

The concept of natural isn’t just reserved for skin care products, it penetrates the hair care market as well. The impetus for the creation of Hugo Naturals was to create a line of beauty products that contained all-natural ingredients. All the while still achieving the same effect of mainstream hair gels and still chemical-free, the most notable characteristic to HKI about Hugo Naturals Styling Gel ($5.99, hugonaturals.com) is that it contains no alcohol and retains moisture unlike some other hair gels that leave your hair feeling dry. Works on all hair types.

1) Do some prep work. “Whether you’re heading north or south, a change in climate can really dry out your hair,” says hairstylist Ashley Javier. Apply a deep-conditioning treatment before you go (just leave it on for 20 minutes while you pack) so your hair has some extra moisture reserves to draw on when you’re on the go.

2) Call a truce with your natural texture. You should spend your time off kicking back, not stressing about unruly curls. “You can look great using nothing more than conditioner and a black elastic,” says India Hicks, creative partner at Crabtree and Evelyn, who lives in the Bahamas. Hicks simply combs a light cream conditioner through her long wavy locks when they’re damp and ties them back in a low ponytail. If your hair is coarse, stylist Ted Gibson recommends choosing a protein-derived conditioner (we like Pantene Pro-V Repair and Protect Intensive Restoration Treatment, $3.99) to calm it down before you pull it back. On a budget? You’ll love these amazing beauty buys.

How to wear nude lipstick on any skin color

3) Loosen up. Vacation is about fun, not perfection, so when you’re hitting the town at night, try playful variations on classic styles. Instead of doing a prim and polished chignon, toss your brush aside and use your fingers to rake your hair into a low pony. Twist it into a messy knot and secure with a few pins for a chic but not done effect. Tie a ribbon to make a headband, and pull wisps out for a flirty touch.

Hello Beautiful!

You emailed me and as promised, I answered. Check out this week’s Ask Natalie Q&A. Keep the questions coming. Be sure to send them to DEAskNatalie@gmail.com. I love this stuff!

Greetings,

I have a question about my hair. It is natural and I have very curly textured hair. A few weeks ago I straightened my hair and now the back of my hair is all straight!! Is there a way to get my natural curl back without cutting my hair?? Thanks so much in advance! - Dionne

Hi Dionne,

This is a common challenge for women with natural hair. Sometimes heat, when applied too often or too high, can loosen the natural hair’s curl pattern and texture. I suggest retraining your hair with a 2 Strand Twist Set using Design Essentials® Natural Defining Crème Gel. Shampoo, condition, and then twist your hair (while wet) in 1 inch sections using Natural Defining Crème Gel. Sit under a hooded dryer until your hair is dry. Separate the twists and style as desired. You’ll have a head of beautiful, textured hair! For more definition, try wearing your twists as a style before separating them for a few days as well. 2 Strand Twists will allow a curl to form in the straight areas, and begin the process of getting your naturally beautiful curls back. You should also replenish the moisture level in your hair; Design Essentials Sulfate-Free Curl Cleanser and Moisturizing Conditioner will do just that. When straightening your hair in the future, be mindful of how much heat is being used. Excessive heat can cause your hair to over stretch and remain permanently straight. - Natalie

——————————–

Hello!!

My name is Alexis and I have decided to wear my natural hair out for the summer (and maybe longer!). I have been natural since about the age of 7, however, when I was younger I always had braids and since the 11th grade, I’ve had weaves 24/7. There is no extensive damage done to my hair, seeing as my older sister is my hair stylist and has made sure that my edges were always healthy. My main concern is what to do now?! I decided to leave it out for the summer because I would like my hair to become healthier. While in its natural state it is thick (however I know it isn’t as thick as it could be), but if it gets flat ironed, it isn’t as full. My hair also shrinks really fast when its wet. My goal for this summer is to give my hair the nutrients it needs to become thicker and longer. Do you have any ideas/hair care regimens that you think would work?? I appreciate you input and am looking forward to your response! -Alexis.

Hi Alexis,

It seems like your sister is doing an excellent job of making sure your natural tresses are maintained! I think it is great you decided to give your hair a break from braids and weaves. Summer months can be challenging, so embracing your texture is the first step. To maintain the integrity and health of your natural hair, use moisturizing shampoos and conditioners formulated for natural hair like Design Essentials Natural. This suite of products contain natural ingredients like Jojoba, Cocoa Butter, Coconut Oil, Soy, and Almond Oil which nourish natural tresses. Since you’re concerned about your hair shrinking, you should try Design Essentials Natural Curl Stretching Cream when styling to help elongate your curls. The 2 Strand Flat Twist Set will be a perfect style for you. Refer to the DE Natural Step by Step Styling Guide if you need guidance on how to achieve this look. http://www.designessentials.com/Natural/Style%20Guide.aspx. This style will stretch your curls and give you maximum fullness. Remember, the smaller your sections, the tighter the finished look. Good Luck and let me know how it turns out. -Natalie

———————————

Blessings!

Recently, I’ve noticed I’m losing my hair and I’m concerned then I’m going to lose it all and I won’t be able to interview for a job, or be seen in the public eye. I’m also menopausal, just right in the beginnings, and it is really frightening to me. Being in the public eye is frightening. I am also looking for a better shampoo and conditioner I can use every 3 weeks when I wash my hair. I’ve been looking at the product called “I Am Care,” and considering the pudding…. I am also using root stimulator which was working and now I’m not sure. I just noticed that I’m really thinning. What can I do? What can you suggest? - Ashé

Hello Ashé,

I agree that being in the public eye can be very frightening and even more so when you are having hair challenges. There can be several reasons why your hair is thinning such as diet, hair regimen, medications, etc. I suggest visiting your dermatologist to determine what is causing the thinning. Once you get an answer then we can determine what regimen will work best for you and your hair. I have a few questions that will help me understand your hair challenges. Is your hair chemical-free (relaxers, permanent wave or color)? Are you noticing short or long strands shedding? What styles are you currently wearing? Is the thinning in a generalized area or throughout your entire head? Is there any history of this or any type of thinning in your family? I look forward to hearing from you and working with you to find a solution. - Natalie

————————————

Natalie,

I’ve been natural for almost 2 years. I am still trying to get the hang of it. I am at a lost on styles and products to put in my hair since I work in Corporate America and I try to look appropriate. I find myself sticking with either putting it in a bun or a roller set. I don’t want permanent locs. I would like to know of more styles I could try. I also would like to just wash, dry and go without any rollers. My hair pattern is curly but there are spots that stay straight so I was wondering what to do with those pieces? Is there a product that I can purchase that will help not only keep my hair moisturized but also take care of the few pieces that don’t want to cooperate. Thanking you in advance for your reply. - Sincerely Jerlisa

Hello Jerlisa,

I must say, you are not alone in your search for an “appropriate, corporate natural style.” Based on your description of your hair type and challenges, you will need to create styles that will place a curl or texture in your hair due to the straighter ends. Styles such as 2 Strand Twist Sets of Flexi-Rod Sets are going to work best for you in order to maintain a neatly groomed look and encourage your ends to curl. You can wear the styles more conservative and neat for work, and then loosen the curls and fluff for a flirty weekend look. Increasing the moisture level in your hair will enhance and encourage the curls to reform as well. Drink lots water and eat plenty of fruits and vegetables to help hydrate your hair from the inside out. Also, try Design Essentials Natural Curl Cleanser and Moisturizing Conditioner to replenish the needed moisture and strength to your hair. You may not be able to wear wash and go styles until the curl formation is reformed. But, I suggest trying to scrunch a curl enhancing product into the ends of your strands and use a diffuser attachment on your blow dryer to assist in curl formation on the ends. Best of luck and let me know how it turns out. - Natalie

Bye Beautiful!!

Hello Beautiful!

Are you natural, thinking about going natural, or currently transitioning to natural hair? If so, and you’re wondering, “What do I do with my hair”, then you are not alone. In fact, styling and maintaining natural hair is one of the hottest topics in hair care. Thousands of women have made the transition; either through the B.C. (the big chop) or by growing out their tresses. For most, this requires them to “relearn” their hair since natural hair opens up a whole new world of discoveries.

First, there’s re-discovering your texture: fine, medium, or coarse. Then, you have to understand your curl pattern: wavy, curly, tightly curled, coiled, and tightly coiled. And of course, the biggest challenge is often finding (and maintaining) the right styles for your hair, personality, and lifestyle. Sound a little exhausting? Well it can be. But this is why “Ask Natalie” is here-to help you get through it, and discover your naturalista!

May is all about natural hair. So we’ve got an entire month to answer all things related to natural hair. Here are a few tips to get us started:

Determine your hair goals. Think about why you went natural. Are you looking for styling versatility, texture definition, volume, or easy maintenance? Your goals will help you find the right products and styles. They’ll also help you to connect with your hair and the natural hair experience.

Consult a professional hair stylist. A professional stylist will help you understand your hair type and texture. They’ll also be able to recommend products and styles based on your hair care needs. Remember, natural hair requires tender, loving care; often in the form of trims, conditioning treatments, or special styles.

Embrace your texture! Your curls and coils may take some getting used to if you haven’t seen your natural texture in years. But, you must learn to embrace your natural roots, especially if staying natural is one of your goals. Everyone’s texture is unique, and there is beauty in diversity.

Speaking of embracing your texture, The World Natural Hair, Healthy, & Beauty Show, held in Atlanta April 30th-May 1st, had a sea of beautiful, funky natural hair. Ladies and gents from all over the country came out to rock their natural hair, and to learn about the biggest movement in hair in decades. Design Essentials was there and I was one of their educators. The event was FABULOUS of course!!! View the photos on the Design Essentials Facebook Page.

A recent study of middle aged black women reveals that nearly 30% have sustained permanent scalp and hair damage, possibly due to tight braids and weaves.

Black women often maintain these styles for long periods of time, and the stress they exert on the scalp can lead to the development of pus-filled bumps, says the lead researcher, Angela Kyei, M.D., a dermatologist and chief resident at the Cleveland Clinic’s Dermatology and Plastic Surgery Institute. “Over time, these bumps can develop bacteria” that can lead to scarring, she explains.

To make matters worse, women who are already losing their hair are more likely to get a weave or braids because they think they help disguise thinning hair.

The study stated Black women should consider refraining from using these hairstyles on young children, and they need to think about the consequences and damage that they’re doing to their hair.

We have no problem rockin’ a weave, but if it’s going to make us go bald before our time, we make need to rethink what we’re doing to our hair. If you must wear a weave or braids, take it out after a few weeks and let your hair breathe.

Porosity means that hair can easily absorb water, but loses that moisture just as quickly, leaving it dry and in desperate need of hydration. For this reason, it’s important to zero in on hair products that lock in moisture because if your hair is dry and brittle, breakage will become yet another issue you’ll need to contend with.

Chances are you haven’t heard of Aquage styling products or their offshoot line, Biomega because they’re only sold in salons. Once you’ve used Biomega’s Silk Shampoo & the Intensive Conditioner ($17 each), your coarse hair is instantly turned into silky hair making it much easier to manage. The conditioner alone is made with omega oils (nature’s most powerful moisturizer) like macadamia nut oil to build and seal the hair cuticle, tiare flower extract (blended with coconut oil) to restore that healthy lustre, and hibiscus extract which forms a barrier against moisture loss. Click here to find a salon near you and discover the product that delivers results tenfold…you won’t be disappointed.

When India.Arie proudly proclaimed she was not her hair I admired her courage for addressing a closet topic not typically addressed unless in the company of women who look like me. Yet, I still felt like the outlier. I am not my hair but it is a part of me. Like my clothes and make up it is an expression of how I feel, an extension of who I am, and for some, how I will be perceived upon first glance. I am not ashamed to admit that, for now I love my hair.

This was not the case when I was younger.

As a child, my hair robbed me of play time with my friends. It was to blame for long hours in a kitchen sitting in front of a hot fiery stove that kept irons hot. It was those very same irons that swept so close to my scalp it gave me goose bumps. It was responsible for hours spent in a hot, smoky salon surrounded by gossip and scents of Finisheen instead of being outdoors on a beautiful Saturday. Among my childhood friends it was the tense subject of curiosity and scrutiny from those who didn’t understand why I didn’t wash my hair everyday or why it didn’t possess the same movement as their straight golden locks.

Yes, I hated my hair.

My disdain for my coarse tresses finally ended in college where I was surrounded by women of color who embraced their crown and glory. Their hair was dyed, shaved, curled, braided, weaved, and sometimes wavy. It was art on display and they wore it proudly. Their pride was contagious and soon I was allowing myself to experiment with new hair styles and colors. Years later, I am still on a journey towards healthy hair. I am not a cosmetologist. I don’t possess a degree or certificate in hair care and I haven’t won any awards. I’m simply passionate about Black hair. After years of bad stylists, bad hair stylists and bad advice I put my hair care in my own hands – literally. I became my very own bathroom beautician. On Sundays I reserve the afternoon and spend it washing, hood drying and curling my mane. Now, my bathroom and bedroom look like the cloudy salons I once frequented. I have a staple of products that I stick to after years of mistrials and broken promises by miracle creams, shampoos and magic hair scarves. I use a hair journal to record my progress so I can easily recall what’s working and stop what isn’t. I’m not an expert and I still make mistakes along the way, but I’m learning. I’m always interested in talking about hair with my friends and when we get together and hold polite conversation about our family, jobs and latest shopping excursion the conversation undoubtedly arrives at hair. We praise someone’s new ‘do, swap hair products, and recount salon stories – good and bad. Hair is one of those threads that ultimately bring conversation, curiosity and compliments out of women of color.

I hope through these blog posts, my progress and setbacks can help you and perhaps you can share your own hair story.

This is a question most women should ask themselves. I didn’t know the answer and for many years it resulted in a lot of frustration and money thrown the drain on products that weren’t designed for my hair. For example, in the late 90s I wanted my hair to mirror Cree Summers’ beautiful kinky curls. I tried every spray, cream and leave-in I could afford at my local beauty supply store. After each disappointing product, I would head right back to the BSS in hopes the next bottle would reward me with the desired look.

It never did.

While my hair, in its natural state, is curly my actual texture and curl pattern is completely different from the actress. I didn’t know that until I came across a hair style system designed by Andre Walker, Oprah’s one and only hair guru. Walker classified hair into 4 (somewhat) easy to understand categories. Within each category, there are further sub-categories to help you define your hair type a little better. That is where it gets tricky. This categorization is adopted by many curl heads around the country and helps put things into perspective whether you’re looking for products to enhance your curl or control it.

Hair Type 1: Straight

The end.

Hair Type 2: Wavy

If you fall into this category, your hair when wet forms a loosely shaped ‘S’. Furthermore, your texture can range from thin (Type 2a) to somewhat thick (Type 2b) to very thick and coarse (Type 2c).

Hair Type 3: Curly

Those with Type 3 hair texture will see a tighter curl as their hair dries and more of an ‘S’ shape. The texture is fuller and sometimes frizzy. Type 3b looks more like ringlets or tight corkscrews with the circumference of a crayon.

Hair Type 4: Kinky

Kinky hair types have the most defined curl. It appears more like a zig zag and tightly coiled. This type of hair is the most fragile so be delicate when drying, combing, brushing or exposing to heat. Those with Type 4b will see less of a coil or curl and the hair will bend in sharp angles like the letter ‘Z’.

So, what’s your hair type?
