When the baby is born, the average man does not feel the same way about the birth as the average woman does. We did not carry our babies around in our wombs for nine months. We did not get to feel the babies move and kick in the same fashion as you did. Our bodies don’t change. Our hormones don’t change. In most cases, we do not change either.

So when the doctor placed my beautiful son Ethan into my hands I just said “thanks.” I was not overjoyed or filled with emotion. I watched my wife cry tears of happiness and I was glad that she was healthy and my new baby boy was healthy, but it is not like I wanted to give the doctor an extra tip or invite him out to dinner or something. He did his job.

I had to learn to love Ethan. My wife had a nine-month head start on their emotional bond. Ethan and I had some catching up to do. At the time of Ethan’s birth, I am not sure if I would have traded my life for his. But right now today, the bond between my son and me is so strong that I would trade all of your lives for his! I would take all of you out! I love my lil’ guy.

I say all this to explain to women that when you get pregnant by a man that you are not married to, you are potentially setting your child up for a bad relationship with his or her father. It is important that you know this in advance of your unprotected sex-capades. I am not excusing the behavior of men. We are responsible for our own actions. I am merely explaining why so many men are not involved in the lives of their children. The reason why I love my son the way I do today is because I have been with him since day one. I have taken full advantage of my opportunity to nurture the bond between my son and I.

Here are the three most important life lessons my father has taught me:

1.Have Confidence. If you don’t have confidence in yourself, then who will?! For example, when going into a job interview, walk in there like you KNOW you are the best candidate for the job. After all, that is the message you want to convey to your future employer. If you do not believe that you are perfect for this job, why should the interviewer? Even if you may not have total confidence in yourself, tell yourself a few compliments, have good posture and walk in there like you know you are the best!

2. Get Ahead. In anything in life, if you are a step ahead of everyone else, you will succeed. Whether it is applying for a job, studying for a test or getting ready for a big event in your life, if you prepare ahead of everyone else, then you will do better. Applying earlier than everyone else for a job lets the employer know that you are serious and are committed to the job. If you study early and often for a test, then you will get a better grade than if you didn’t. Preparing early for a big day such as a big day on the job, a concert, sports event, or moving also helps. If you prepare in advance for all these things, you will do better than if you had done these on the spot.

3. Do The Right Thing. Although it may be very tempting to rebel, and sometimes us girls need to, in the end doing the right thing is the best decision. Many of the mistakes I’ve made in my life I look back on and think, “If I only listened to my daddy.” It may have been a hard decision at the time and rebelling probably looked more fun, but doing the right thing always is the best decision.

As Father’s Day gets closer, I find myself leaning towards the classic card and Best Buy gift certificate.  But not only does Dad order whatever he wants from online shopping networks, but the amount of money that I could put on a gift card would maybe get him a few CD’s (if he’s lucky).  As I see the summer approaching without much change in his wardrobe, I realize that girls can give their dads something much more useful for Father’s Day: their own, personalized makeover!

Let’s face it: we all watch Dad getting ready to go out and we have at least 5 suggestions for him.  It’s our chance to help him out.  Spend your money on a cute card and something to add to his wardrobe while making the bulk of your gift be awesome ideas for him.  Get rid of his obscure patterned ties and give him something more modern and summery.

Rather than the huge, sometimes unflattering t-shirts, re-introduce Dad to the plain white T.  A t-shirt and jeans is comfortable, light, and definitely more attractive than a huge t-shirt with lots going on.

I’m not going to generalize and say that all Dads wear patterns, but I have definitely seen a lot of that happening this summer. Rather than making them ditch all clothing with anything exciting happening, just have them taper off from the Hawaiian t-shirt look.  Go for something with patterns or stripes, just a little less intense.

Hot sunglasses are in.  Although the modern eye-wear is pretty different from what Dad’s are usually caught in, give them a little taste of what is happening now.  Even if they aren’t ready for something huge, throw some cool rims their way and see how they feel.

There’s nothing worse than a tan from high socks. Not only are ankle socks much more comfortable, but they work better with shorts.  Let Dad in on this little secret!

Lastly, don’t forget to remind Dad about those small things that sometimes slip their minds: keeping facial hair tamed, using lotion, and taking some time to relax!

Like Chris Rock said..”All we fathers get is the big piece of chicken- if we lucky”…Moms get songs by the O’Jays and everything!!!!! Moms deserve that love, but right now I’m shouting out to real dads.

Some are great role models with real academic achievements. Some are not. Some are no longer alive. Some fathers are locked up, but they are praying for their kids and hoping to be on the streets soon and be betters dads 1 day.
