Earlier this month, male model David Gangy, complained that male models were treated as the ‘lowest of the low’ thanks to their portrayal in comedy Zoolander. He says that in the scheme of things, even the asistants on the shoot are treated with more respect than the male model. Boo hoo! It must be dreadful, to get paid to wear beautiful clothes and travel the world.

At the time I thought Gandy was an idiot. But then I saw images of Andej Pejic, (the guy on the right) an Australian male model, modeling, of all things, women’s wear, specifically a wedding dress for Jean Paul Gaultier. While I have to admit, he makes a pretty good looking lady, it did get me thinking.Perhaps the fashion industry does exploit male models for publicity or attention? Surely there would have been a female model who could have done the job just as well if not better.

Then I heard the story of the transsexual who will star in Brazil’s fashion week, Lea T. will walk for Givenchy, and will definitely be one of the most photographed models at the event. The fact that I even know she is a transsexual highlights how desperate the fashion industry is for controversy. Otherwise, why does it even matter if she was born as a boy or a girl?

It seems to me, that the fashion industry is all about creating a buzz, and to do that they need to create controversy. Any controversy. A few years ago it was all about why are all “America’s Next Top Model,” and this year it seems, the fashion  industry is determined to make us take notice of them with androgynous models.

I guess it’s working.

We earlier posted that the beauty was seen sporting some brand new blond hair at Paris Fashion Week. Well it turns out that her Diddy boo was indeed on deck for the Gareth Pugh Show, seated front row beside huge fashion insiders like Carine Roitfeld (above). According to WWD,

Sean “Diddy” Combs is taking the name of his most recent album, “Last Train to Paris,” to heart. The hip-hop impresario-turned-designer slipped into his front seat at Gareth Pugh minutes before the show started. “I’m here presenting my album,” said Combs. “I’m just here observing, trying to figure it all out,” he added when asked about upcoming fashion projects…R&B singer Cassie squeezed into her seat wearing a white Pugh number ahead of a performance at the V.I.P. Room nightclub. The singer is working on her next album, which will be “more pop than R&B.”

Good to see the designer (and his side piece) doing real fashion research, front row at Paris shows. Hopefully he will learn a few pointers, because the oversized jacket, highwater pants and grandpa shoes (with pants leg tucked in only on one side) were not up to par for such an extravagant gathering:

Jenden is a fashion industry vet, though he is first planting his feet as an independent designer. According to his bio:

Nathan Jenden has over 10 years experience as a designer, his brand is aimed at the modern woman, who desires old fashioned quality delivered in a modern form. Educated at Central Saint Martins and the Royal College of Art and work experience with John Galliano, prepared him for a career at Kenzo, Tommy Hilfiger and Daryl K. He runs his own label in conjunction with his role as creative director at Diane Von Furstenburg.

His Fall 2010 collection was shown at London Fashion Week, and it did not disappoint. He sent bold prints, bright colors, sexy silhouettes and a whole lot of swagger down the runways. Jenden’s work this season has a real urban appeal that we could easily see marching down a Harlem pavement or out a fifth avenue residence. His ability to capture the best of both worlds is what draws up to his collection and the fierceness that his designs exude is what keeps us interested. Also, in light of the lack of diversity taking place on fashion runways world-wide, we totally appreciate his fabulous model casting for the London show. Show ‘em how its done Nathan!

Many models and industry professionals have expressed displeasure with the blatantly discriminatory ways of the fashion world. Now, we actually have some quantifiable evidence. Jezebel has been monitoring the number of spots relegated to women of color at New York’s Mercedes Benz Fashion Week, and the numbers show a clear decline in the trajectory of hiring practices with regard to black women.

Jezebel monitored the website Style.com which covers fashion week, and counted the number of spots in each of the 122 fall, 2010 shows held in New York. They reportedly counted how many of those spots went to models of color. According to Jezebel,

The numbers were not encouraging. Of 4,095 turns on the runway, only 662 went to models who weren’t white. That’s barely 16%.  Black models, at 323 bookings, were used the most of any single ethnic group, aside from whites. Asians were second, with 264. Latinas were a distant third, with 61 trips down the catwalk. Fourteen times during this fashion week, models of other races were used in a runway show.

It’s important to note that we were counting instances of a model being used in a show — not individual models. (A lot fewer than 4,095 models did the fashion week rounds.) Models who are popular with designers and casting directors were booked for multiple shows, and many shows send each model out in two or more looks from the collection. We counted not each model but each runway look — ie, the total number of opportunities for women of color to be included on American fashion’s biggest platform, and in the fashion week that kicks off the world’s ready-to-wear collections, which continue right now in London.

These statistics  show a clear decline in work opportunities since last year. Whats particularly surprising is  the fact that several of the most well-known fashion houses like Calvin Klein and DKNY, were among the most discriminatory. Jezebel states:

Most of the shows that took place used some models of color — just three designers, A Détacher, Alice + Olivia (full disclosure: an old client of mine), and Preen, chose exclusively white casts — but many used very few. Well over 60% of the shows, in fact, used casts that were 85% white, or more.

Nineteen shows used only one non-white model. Those designers included taste-makers like Calvin Klein, blockbuster commercial labels like Diesel, and the Olsens’ well-regarded line, The Row.

Eighteen designers booked just two models of color. That list included both Donna Karan and DKNY, Jill Stuart, Rag & Bone, and Nicole Miller.

It is certainly frustrating to see the pattern that the fashion industry is following, though he real question is how can we change things? It is already a known fact that black women struggle to find solid footing in the racially selective fashion industry. Now, we need to dedicate efforts to the task of remedying the problem. We hit up the iconic Bryant Park Tents to take in one of the most spectacular shows of the week, Isaac Mizrahi.

Of course, the wealth of the fashion week experience lies largely in the smaller details, so here is my fashion week diary, filled with all of the amazingly glamorous details.

9:00 AM

Entering the tents is nothing short of a red carpet experience tailor made for the die-hard fashionista. There are paparazzi and street photographers lining the steps of the entrance tent.  As I enter, random people snap pictures of my outfit, and shoes; ladies, i loved it!

9:30 AM

I brave an impressive line manned by an uber-chic PR team, and make my way to the Mizrahi tent.

9:45 AM

I am seated in the third row (which-fyi-puts me shoulder to shoulder with major players in the fashion game). I see Russel Simmons and supermodel Veronica Webb seated directly across from me. And, oh my, was that Countess D Lessepes from our favorite guilty pleasure “The Real Housewives Of NY”? I even see Yaya from ANTM, remember her?!

10:00 AM

Just as I find myself fed up with people-watching, the lights dim…yes!

Mizrahi sent about 45 glamorous looks down the runway. The collection is a winter wonderland theme; luxe furs, colorful wools and heavy prints march by me. I am totally engaged with this line. It has a pretty, real-woman sensibility, though it is fabulously fashion forward in its execution. Elegant ball gowns float by, topped with full fox-trimmed hoods…perfection! Thick wool blazers balance short feminine dresses, and we are inundated with color which is so often omitted in fall collections. Mizrahi has managed to crank out another winter-wonderful collection that maintains his trademark understanding of what real women can, and want to wear.

Snow comes falling freely from the ceiling (covering the usually stoic and unnaturally chic front-row Vogue editors-Ha!) emphasizing the theme and ending the show with a bang. The models take their final walk, giving us one final view of the amazing Mizrahi looks and then the designer himself prances down the length of the runway. A job well done.

10:40 AM

I exit the Mizrahi tent on a natural high, anxious to see the Fall 2010 collection hit stores.

In desperate need of a break from the high-energy, high-fashion Bryant park scene, I dip into the Frappucino Lounge.

I am greeted with an organically tranquil ambiance, and have a seat to mix and mingle with the other fashion week glamazons seeking refuge at the Starbucks lounge. I become acquainted with a brand new flavor of Strabucks’ bottled Frappucino, and it is decidedly a relationship that I want to continue! The Vanilla Light Frappucino combines the best of both worlds. The traditional taste of Starbucks’ rich coffee, but with 50% fewer calories and 60% less sugar than the classic Vanilla.

As my fashion week experience comes to an end, I have a new collection and a new drink to look forward to! Until next time fashionistas!

And since we all know that these designs won’t make it from the catwalk to the sidewalk without some adjustments, here are 5 tips on how to add pattern to your daily life.

Step 1.
Invest in some bold flower prints. Note: Color combinations can vary the impact of the same print. For instance, a black and white floral pattern can be sophisticated and understated, while the same pattern in bright green and yellow can be young and fresh.

Step 2.
Buy patterned dresses, which work well on most ages and body shapes, and are an easy way to ease this trend into your life. Silky wrap dresses with flowers, stripes and other prints can work well year-round.

Step 3.
Realize that investing in pieces with animal prints are a safe bet, as these are always in style and can make any outfit look fresh. Look for scarves, tops and pants with this on it.

Step 4.
Use patterns strategically to create the illusion of the body you wish you had. A bright print can accentuate your best features. If you have a small, toned upper half and larger hips and thighs, opt for patterns above the waist to call attention to this area, and go for darker pants or a skirt to balance yourself out.

Step 5.
Play it safe by adding patterns in your accessories, rather than your clothes. Look for patterned tights and leggings, patterned bracelets, print bags and necklaces with lots going on.

Still, Azria is often criticized as a designer for refusing to stray from the bandage design that propelled his brand into mainstream notoriety. After all, how many short, tight striped dresses can one fashion house make?

Well, Azria marched his response to this question down the Mercedes Benz Fashion week runways this past week. The answer? At least 32 more.

The collection managed to reinvent the bandage dress is a more cutting edge way. Azria showed conceptual dresses with dramatic cuts and complicated detailing. The typical skin tight Leger mini dresses have graduated to angular, sculpted frocks. In some pieces, the bandaging technique is abandoned altogether in favor of elaborate weaving, although there is always a subtle nod to the original thrown in masterfully.

The 29-year-old entertainer donned a Catherine Malandrino dress and Robert Lee Morris jewels, as styled by June Ambrose.

A preview edition of the issue was handed out during NY Fashion Week. It features the Big Apple’s up-and-comers including model/artist Alexandra Richards, model Theodora Richards and DJ Harley Viera-Newton, who just celebrated her 22nd birthday with a star-studded bash at Marquee.

WTF? Terrell Owens Walks The Runway…In A Wig?

Much of what we see on the runway is purely for show, but this is one trend that just might make its way into the mainstream. If you’re interested in recreating the look for yourself, Glamour Magazine got a behind the scenes look at the makings of Lacoste’s side pony.

Hairstylist Luke Hersheson was going for “playful and preppy” when he whipped up these poufy side ponies for the runway. Their texture gives them a bit of a sophisticated/modern update.

To give the ‘tails a full-bodied look, Hersheson relied on Rockaholic by TIGI Texturizing Spray Pomade along with some strong mousse.

Tracy Reese, one of the few African-American designers who showed at this year’s Fashion Week, makes clothes that make us smile. She’s not afraid to be a girlie girl, and goes over the top in doing so. Floral prints, flowy skirts, and feminine silhouettes have been front runners in her fashion collections for years, but for her Fall 2010 Ready-To-Wear line, Reese attempted to make “an eclectic mix of urban and rural style.” To be concise, she succeeded.

Think black lace, cocktail dresses with arm-warmers, and overwhelming, but delicate wraps. Every ensemble conveys a feeling of warmth without heaviness. Reese explained the line further, “distressed faux fur and stretch suede styles are softened by cosmetic toned lingerie and made cozy by soft alpaca sweaters.”

The BCBG runway show took place this past Thursday at New York’s Mercedes Benz Fashion Week, and to be frank, it was a huge bummer.

While the BCBG brand is not necessarily known to be on the cutting edge of high-end fashion, it is still known as a stylish fashion house for the city-chic woman. Unfortunately, none of this came across in the fall 2010 collection. Designer Max Azria provided nothing more than a drab color palette with white stockings and a mish-mosh of fabrics that totally disagree with each other. The models seemed to be playing an epic game of “how many ways can we wear the same piece of cloth.” There were a few looks that were satisfactory, but overall BCBG left us feeling uninspired and confused. Designer Gwen Stefani sent her Fall 2010 collection for L.A.M.B down the runway this past Thursday at Mercedes Benz Fashion Week.

The line stayed true to its usual rocker aesthetic, via cool leather pieces, layering and punk prints. Stefani also incorporated a military motif, a clever belt accessory and garments with more proportion to keep the line looking trendy, fresh and new.

1) Create A Muted But Bold Color Palette

Sure, this may sound like a contradiction but its not. The L.A.M.B. collection used a lot of blacks, deep greens, greys and rich blues. While these aren’t the brightest colors, they are definitely bold! Mixing bold colors is actually quite difficult sometimes, as it is so easy to end up looking more drab than fab in a black and blue outfit, but if you use the looks from the L.A.M.B. runway as a guide, you should be able to master the delicate balance.

WTF: Raven Symone Hits The Runway

FROM WSJ: ARISE is the first global style and culture magazine to celebrate African achievement in fashion and arts. This season, they selected designers from South Africa, Nigeria, and Tanzania to present their collections to a packed house at the main tent at Bryant Park during Fashion Week. The runway show was titled “African Collective—Part III”!

South African label Black Coffee (Jacques van der Watt and Danica Lepen) featured oversized coats with wide collars in muted peach and tan colors. For the most part, the coats looked like they would keep a person very warm, especially those that looked reminiscent of comforters with quilted geometric designs. Underneath the coats each model wore the label’s concept dress, which can be worn in several different ways. Jacques van der Watt said the inspiration for the coats’ angular styles came from African masks.

The next collection, from Loin Cloth & Ashes (Anisa Mpungwe), frequently referenced origami figures. Tanzanian-born Ms. Mpungwe explained that origami is unpredictable, like her style: “You fold something up so simple into a beautiful piece of art,” she said.

One thing to note was her jewelry, featuring electric-blue geometric shapes, which Ms. Mpungwe said has a tribal look to it.

The clear favorite of the night, however, was the sexy, military chic collection from Nigeria’s own Deola Sagoe. Strong, structured shoulders on jackets, tassels, metallic fabrics and gold buttons were very prominent in her garments. “Ever since I was a child I was very fascinated by the military silhouette,” said Ms. Sagoe. “I like men in military uniform. WTF: Raven Symone Hits The Runway

According to the Huffington Post, Campbell is organizing an all star fashion show set to take place during Mercedes Benz Fashion Week. She is teaming up with top designers, who are in turn creating custom pieces to be shown on the runway and then sold at Net-A-Porter on March 15, with proceeds going to the organization CARE.  Campbell states,

“Everyone else is trying to help Haiti, and we wanted to do our part on the fashion side of things. The response has been overwhelming. No one has said `no’ – which means a lot because it’s such a busy time with designers preparing their fall collections.”

Huff Post is reporting that Campbell has called upon her friends, including Christy Turlington and the Duchess of York, asking them to participate. Celebrity stylist Rachel Zoe is putting together the looks, and designer Marc Jacobs has already created a special Louis Vuitton handbag, one of many items that will go on sale on the Net-a-Porter Web site.

Campbell, who rarely walks the runways is also slated to hit the catwalk for the charity event. She has previously organized Fashion for Relief events at the Bryant Park tents to benefit disaster victims in New Orleans, Tanzania and Mumbai, India.

The show is taking place at  New York’s Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week on Feb. 12. If you are interested in attending, tickets will go on sale to American Express cardmembers Friday through Ticketmaster.

Top 10 Highest Paid Models Revealed, None Black

The spring 2010 shows were nothing short of spectacular.

Designers balanced extravagance with eccentricity to create looks that were stunning and unique. As amazing as the  garments were, the corresponding hair and makeup looks very much outdid the couture.

Here is our list of the top 4 shows that took hair and makeup to the extreme this past week:

1.) Fantasy Land Backstage at Jean Paul Gaultier Couture

This show was a blend of high fashion and the Bronner Brothers hair show. The complex hair styles and bold looks were both appealing and entertaining!

2.) Rio Fashion Week’s Auslander show

This totally abstract look was a white-face in a cage with a mohawk. Strange, bizarre, alarming. But are you not entertained?

3.) Chanel Couture

These extravagant coifs capture Chanel’s signature romanticism in a big heart-shaped way. This hair is definitely art.

4.) Givenchy

This French fashion house showcased a dark makeup look in its Couture show. Capitalizing on the new Vampire craze, Givenchy models wore very dark smokey eyes with red lips. While dark eyes and lips would never work together in real life, its definitely a fab runway look.

5.) Christian Dior Couture

Dior went for the drama this season with bold, overdone almost kabuki style makeup. Pale powder, deep red lips and striking blue and green shadow characterize the Dior models’ makeup look. We love the drama!

Top Trends For Men In 2010

1.) The Murse

Man purses were in abundance on the 2010 Menswear runways. While most men are averse to rocking bags for fear of having them confused with pocketbooks, a few designers found ways to make the murse more masculine.

We vote PASS on man purses for 2010!

2.) Thick Knits

There is noting quite as sophisticated and sexy as a man in a thick form fitting knit sweater. Knits were heavy on the 2010 runways, just the way we like them.

3.) Leather Pants

Leather pants were a huge trend in the 90s, and they seem to be in for a huge comeback in 2010. A number of designers showed leather bottoms, though we’re not entirely sure about the look. You definitely need a whole lot of swagger to pull off this look. If you’re ambitious enough to try, make sure and study the runway shows where the look has been perfected.

Its a toss up for the leather pant look. You are just as likely to PASS as you are to FAIL while trying this bold trend!

4) Dresses & Skirts

Let me start off by stating that we vote hell no on this trend. While experimentation is always encouraged in fashion, there are certain trends that are strictly relagated to certain people (namely, women and Irish men). Skirts are definitely not a good look for 2010.

5) Shearling Coats

There is a new coat alternative making its way through the fashion circuit. Designers reintroduced the shearling lined bomber in the 2010 menswear collections. Overall this look is bold sexy and ultra masculine.

6) 2 Tone Suits

While the suit is a difficult thing to reinvent, several designers took a stab at it on the Menswear runways. The newest trend in tailored menswear is apparently mixing tones. Several designers showed suits and jackets with different-colored sleeves. In addition, some went as far as choosing a different fabric altogether for the sleeves. Our verdict: don’t try to fix whats not broken. The suit is the quintessential tailored, any-occasion menswear piece. No alteration necessary in this case.

7) Tights

There is almost nothing flattering about a man in tights. While women are able to wear them and showcase endless curves, a man in tights just does not scream sexy. No one wants to see your man’s body knees knocking in a pair of tights. Leave it to the ballet dancers guys.

V Mag Asks: Thick Or Thin Models, Which Do You Prefer?

Chris Brown has certainly been vilified in the media for his recent domestic abuse scandal. He has put on a well publicized show of repentance, and now the question is not so much ‘why did he do it;’ but more of ‘should we forgive him yet?’

It seems that in the fashion world, celebrity trumps scandal, and forgiveness is granted to Breezy. High Fashion designers Gianfranco Ferre recently showed their 2010/2011 Fall Winter menswear collection at Milan Fashion Week. Chris made an appearance and apparently the designers Tommaso Aquilano and Roberto Rimondi, were so enamored with him that they posed for a picture and sent it out in a press release to major fashion news outlets.

Since an esteemed fashion house like Ferre is boasting about its association with a famed woman-beater, we must ask the question: is it time to forgive Chris Brown?

In my opinion, Chris Brown is a fashionable guy. Unfortunately, he has also been convicted of domestic abuse. The latter by far cancels the appeal of the former in this simple equation.

PASS OR FAIL? Chris Brown’s New Photo Shoot

Regardless of how famous he is, how much publicity he can generate or how desperate fashion houses are to stay afloat in these trying economic times, I can’t fathom why any decent publicist would regard such a press release is a smart idea.

I do not think that Chris Brown has done enough to recover from his tainted image. I do not forgive him yet, and I do not want to wear any designer that flaunts him for press.

What’s Hot + What’s Not For 2010

On Saturday, fashion label PPQ made history during London Fashion Week by casting the first ever all-black show in the capital.

Percy Parker, designer of the line, added: “It’s not something we really considered. We just wanted to find the most beautiful models and those were the best ones.” This decision just comes two weeks after supermodel Naomi Campbell said she thought the recession was harming black models’ chances to get cast in runway shows during the various fashion weeks.

However, the reaction to the show was mixed. While some thought that PPQ was just doing it for publicity, others celebrated the diversity.

Former Destiny’s Child member Michelle Williams, seated on the front row, said “I don’t want to turn this into a race issue, but I know this is what people are going to talk about. And it’s great that it’s happened here. I thought they were really regal.”
