Don’t let the miserable morning afters keep you from having an awesome time this summer. With so much available, why miss out on any of the fun opportunities? So go ahead, sing your heart out at karaoke night. Or show off your talents at trivia night at the local bar. But when your alarm starts buzzing the next morning, make sure you are ready to deal with what comes along with heavy drinking: hangovers.

Hangover remedies for the weekends are very different than hangover remedies for the weekday. Bumming around on Saturday morning trying to get rid of the headache from hell isn’t as bad as healing yourself on your commute to work. But if you are stuck on the subway with a stomach ache and headache, try to grab one of these things for the ride:

Water: Not only should you chug this the night before, but continue to do so the morning after… maybe through the afternoon to be safe. The most important thing is to be hydrated so that your body doesn’t crash.

2 Advil:… Maybe 3. Take this with water and make sure that you have some food in your stomach while you take it. The worst would be to take it on an empty stomach and end up puking what you don’t even have in your tummy.

Coconut Water: Ice cold coconut water might taste a little odd at first to those of you who haven’t had it/don’t like coconut. But the flavor is very light in comparison to what you get out of it. Coconut water is packed with electrolytes… the one thing you need when hungover.

Bagel: Not only are they delicious, but the bread absorbs everything that is upsetting your tummy. Go easy on the cream cheese and butter and you should be feeling better soon after you eat.

When you have more time to take care of yourself on Saturday or Sunday morning, try to get yourself in the kitchen. My friends and I like to call this dish The Hangover Cure. It’s a tortilla wrap filled with eggs, cheese, potatoes, and sausage. Eat it with some hot sauce and you’re golden. Feeling too sick to stand by the stove? Order it from pretty much any deli or cafe: It’s a common dish that has tons of advantages.

Spend your weekend morning taking it easy after a crazy night. Movies are long enough to help you relax and they keep you pretty distracted. I personally enjoy mindless movies when I’m tired and feel out of it. The perfect hangover movie is the one that I can doze off in the middle of and wake up and not be completely lost. Solution? Disney movies. I understand that this probably isn’t everyone’s first choice, but Disney definitely helps me feel better. Not a Disney person? It’s Always Sunny In Philadelphia has never failed to make me feel better. When you feel like a sick fool the next morning there is nothing better than watching the cast get themselves in ridiculous situations and then work their way out.

Another remedy is music. I personally enjoy kicking back to some reggae music. It’s light, happy, and relaxing. Long showers or baths never fail to heal any ailment that you might have. Use your favorite products and let the warm water and steam release you of any stress that you have.

Remember to not let a hangover keep you from going hard again the next day. Take some time to relax and make yourself feel better before going to town again. If the morning was especially rough, maybe try a new drink for the next night. Certain drinks hit you harder the next morning than others. Do you have any hangover cures that work especially well for you? Fill us in: we could all use the advice!!

Awhile back, New York Times writer Paul Clarke said he thought it is good to drink around your kids as a parenting tactic because it teaches them moderation. Of course, Mr. Clarke is the Times’ alcohol beat writer, so I’m guessing he’s bound to come down on the “pro-drinking” side of many an argument. Me, I’m not so sure.

I have a friend who loves to bring his seven-year-old over to my house every Saturday to play with my kids. He drops by around noon, plops down on the couch, turns on a terrible movie for ironic amusement and opens a beer. Usually he has about 3-4 beers before he and his daughter take off (I drive them home). The kids love it because after a couple of beers my friend becomes a playful clown.

Dieters are often advised to stop drinking alcohol to avoid the extra calories lurking in a glass of wine or a favorite cocktail. But new research suggests that women who regularly consume moderate amounts of alcohol are less likely to gain weight than nondrinkers and are at lower risk for obesity.

The findings, reported this week in the Archives of Internal Medicine, are based on a study of 19,220 United States women aged 39 or older who, at the start of the study, fell into the “normal weight” category based on their body mass index. Researchers at Brigham and Women’s Hospital in Boston tracked the women’s drinking habits over 13 years. About 60 percent of the women were light or regular drinkers, while about 40 percent reported drinking no alcohol.

Want to lose weight? Dance it off!

Over the course of the study, 41 percent of the women became overweight or obese. Although alcohol is packed with calories (about 150 in a six-ounce glass of wine), the nondrinkers in the study actually gained more weight over time: nine pounds, on average, compared with an average gain of about three pounds among regular moderate drinkers. The risk of becoming overweight was almost 30 percent lower for women who consumed one or two alcohol beverages a day, compared with nondrinkers.

We just found out that Keyshia Cole’s mom Frankie is going through it..she broke up with her much younger boyfriend Lamon and is not handling it well.

Here’s what we found out from freddyo.com:

Frankie is like that aunty that everyone and there mama has, she knows how to have a good time, but for the last few weeks she has been going threw it… A few weeks ago I found out that her and Lamon her lover had come to an end and she was pissed… At her shows premier party I asked Frankie where was the love of her life Lamon, she replied ” he f-king up.” I was then lost for words because she seemed to be so deeply in love with him and even got his name tatted on her back! I couldn’t even imagine having somebody’s name tattooed on my back, just to break up with them not even 3 months later, before the scars healed.

One of her friends told me that they were taking some time apart but she came on the Ryan Cameron show to let the world know its over. Frankie once told me life for her is all about having fun with her family, and if you know Frankie you know she loves her men and don’t mind a little kiss and makeup …..But if you know Frankie you know she moves on quick and is a strong black women …

Frankie has also decided to clean up her image saying that she wanted to stop drinking and is going to stop saying “man down” and start telling these men to “man up”… So no more crazy pictures of Frankie having a good time … damn!!!

There’s a lot of articles on the net that give guidance on how to get rid of that pesky hangover after you’ve had one too many Patrons the night before. To be honest, most of them say “pop and Advil and drink some water,” but as we all know this sometimes isn’t nearly enough to get through your day at work. Here’s HB’s list of surefire ways to get rid of that hangover!

1.	Start nursing your hangover before you go to sleep. Take some Advil, Aleve, Tylenol (or whatever floats your boat) before you hit the sack. The #1 rule of pain is if you fight it before the pain starts it’s easier to control. So if you take those meds before the headache starts it will never become a splitting FML type of headache.
2.	Eat and drink before bed. Have some crackers or bread to soak up all that alcohol before you sleep. Also, remember that a hangover is basically extreme dehydration. This means that if you drink a few large glasses of water before bed you’ll wake up less dehydrated AKA hung-over.
3.	Take a cool shower. Your blood vessels are dilated and you need to cool and soothe yourself back into shape.

4.	Water is great but Gatorade is the best. Athletes drink Gatorade because they need to fight extreme dehydration by replacing electrolytes. Consider your hangover on the same level and just drink the damn Gatorade already.
5.	Eat! Eat! Eat! Cheese, bread, eggs, bacon, home fries! This is not a time to watch your weight. Eat those greasy and oily foods to help soothe your stomach.
6.	Alka-Seltzer. This will also ease your tummy and make you feel less nauseous.

We hope these tips help you fight through your next nasty hangover! Good luck ladies!

[From Health.com]

Drinking diet sodas, especially those with a citrus flavor, might help ward off painful calcium deposits known as kidney stones.

The drinks contain citrate, which is known to inhibit calcium formation, according to the authors of a study that was to be presented Sunday at the American Urological Association annual meeting, in Chicago.

And there’s more good news in the drinks department: A second study being presented at the same meeting found that pomegranate juice might slow the progression of prostate cancer.

Some 10 percent of people in the United States will form these calcium deposits, known as kidney stones, at some point in their lives. In as many as a third of the cases, it’s because they do not urinate enough citrate, said study author Dr. Brian Eisner, a clinical fellow in urology at the University of California San Francisco and an instructor in urology at Massachusetts General Hospital/Harvard Medical School, in Boston.

Potassium citrate and other pills can help alleviate the problem, as can a special lemonade drink (rich in citric acid) concocted by one of Eisner’s co-authors a decade or so ago.

[From CNN Health]

Attention red wine drinkers: Drinking moderate amounts of any kind of alcohol (including wine, beer, and liquor) is associated with a slightly increased breast cancer risk — and the rosy-hued beverage is no exception.

That’s the conclusion of a new study that dashes any hope that red wine is less likely than other alcohol-containing drinks to increase breast cancer risk, or that it might even protect against the disease.

“If a woman chooses red wine, she should do so because she likes the flavor, not because she thinks doing so will reduce her breast cancer risk,” said Polly A. Newcomb of Fred Hutchinson Cancer Center in Seattle, Washington, who led the research. “It might be good for other things, but it definitely is not conferring any protection against breast cancer.”

There’s good evidence showing that women who consume alcohol have a slightly greater risk of breast cancer than teetotalers, and the risk is higher with heavier drinking. But research in animals and some human studies had suggested that red wine might not carry the same risks as other forms of alcohol or could even be protective.

(From lemondrop.com)

According to a recent survey of 3,616 college students, most women tend to overestimate the amount of alcohol a typical guy would like his female friends, dates or girlfriends to drink by an average of one-and-a-half drinks.

The study also found that the women who overestimated the men’s preferences were more likely to engage in excessive drinking.

It may be true that women have misconceptions about how much men want a woman to drink, but we have to call BS on the idea that women drink to impress men in the first place. It seems more likely to us that the excessive drinkers overestimated men’s preferences for boozing to match their own inflated preferences.

Among hard-drinking women of a certain age, being able to keep up with the guys can be a badge of honor, but for the most part people of both genders drink because they enjoy it.

HOT TOPIC

Do you drink to impress, or just to have fun?

So while we’re not in favor of anyone drinking to the point of compromising their safety, shouldn’t we base our decisions about our own drinking on our own health and happiness, not what men like?

The singer was spotted toasting to presumably the good life with hubby Nick Cannon and friends, despite a ton of pregnancy rumors going around. But we all know Mariah is all about attention, so we really wouldn’t put it past her to throw some Welch’s in a wine glass to ward off nosy gossip hounds.

Then again, they say a glass of wine won’t hurt a fetus, so maybe she’s just celebrating the new year and calling it quits on the booze after that.

What do YOU think?

Somewhere out there may be a martini with your name on it. That’s not such a bad thing if you drink occasionally and know when enough is enough. But if you drink too much – particularly if you’re inclined to get behind the wheel afterwards – a martini with your name on it can be like a bullet with your name on it. In that case, the best defense against downing a shot could turn out to be getting a shot; that, at least, is the thinking behind a new study of monthly injections to battle alcohol abuse.

Drinking too much is a deadly game any time of year, but it’s particularly so during the holidays, when alcohol-fueled parties abound and even moderate social drinkers may indulge too heavily. That’s the reason 40% of all road deaths during the Christmas and New Years season involve at least one alcohol-impaired driver, compared to 28% the rest of the year. Those numbers ought literally to be sobering, but for some drinkers – full-blown alcoholics in particular – they’re not.

One answer for those trying to kick the habit is naltrexone, a once-a-day prescription medication that works in the brain to curb the urge to drink and reduce the amount consumed if drinkers do give into the craving. But there’s one difficulty with naltrexone: In order for the pill to work, you have to take it – essentially making a chemical commitment to sobriety every day. That’s not so easy for people who deny they have a problem or who know they do but are nonetheless looking forward to the annual office bash. “Part of the traditional problem with naltrexone has been that people just don’t take it,” says David Rosenbloom, a substance abuse specialist at the Boston School of Public Health and director of the addiction prevention and policy group Join Together.
