After a radio interview one day, I received an email from a husband named Scott. Scott heard me on the radio and asked me to help save his marriage. (When men email me and ask for help, I call them back immediately. If a man is asking for help, I know that he is ready to do whatever it takes to save his marriage. I predict that I will have his marriage on track by mid-afternoon. Easy.) Scott explains that his marriage is in trouble. His wife is very unhappy and she is talking about leaving him. We are always talking about divorce. If we are not talking about divorce we are talking about who is getting married. Well, I want to talk about and write about how to stay married.

I talk to couples who have marital problems every day. While the people that I talk to are different, the problems within the marriages are very much the same. The problems are the same because the solution is the same. The solution is a technological advancement in relationship problem solving and conflict resolution that I created and developed called, “The D.I.N.A.O. Project,” short for “Divorce Is Not An Option.” We can save our marriages if we are taught, if we are trained, if we exhibited and if we all believed that divorce is not an option as a solution to a troubled marriage.

What is unique about D.I.N.A.O. and why it’s light years ahead of all relationship therapeutic treatments is that it looks at the end result of a relationship problem first, and then works its way backwards to the root of the problem.

The end result of too many marriages today is divorce. I start off all of my relationship counseling sessions explaining to couples why they don’t want a divorce. I have been there. Divorce sucks. Divorce hurts. Divorce is for losers. You don’t want to be a loser do you? Divorce means that you quit, that you failed, that you are a failure. You don’t want a divorce. D.I.N.A.O.

Twenty days after divorcing her first husband, Lisa Marie and Michael Jackson got married. This has got to be of the strangest relationships on the list. The two bonded during the molestation allegations against Jackson. She proved to be a positive influence in his life. She pushed him to settle out of court and to go to rehab for drug addiction. The marriage eventually ended because of Jackson’s drug addiction.

Wait, this was J.Lo’s 2nd marriage right? Her first one to Ojani Noa didn’t even make it a year while this one only lasted 6 months. This is by far Jenny’s most forgettable marriage compared to Ben Affleck, Marc Anthony and her 2+ year relation with Puffy. The question is…what the hell is Chris Judd doing now? We had a sneaking suspicion that this wouldn’t last considering they were MWD (married-while-drunk). The model/actress married the flamboyant basketball player one drunken night in Las Vegas in 1998. Luckily for them, the marriage was invalidated because of their inebriated state. This wouldn’t Carmen’s first marriage that didn’t last. In 2003 the model/actress married musician Dave Navarro and the couple split in 2007. Perhaps the 3rd time will be the charm for Carmen?

Britney Spears & Jason Alexander: 55 Hours
55 hours?! This might be the shortest marriage ever. These two childhood friends tied the knot in Las Vegas in January 2004. Brit quickly called it off siting that it was a “mistake.” He said it was fueled by drugs. She said it was a joke gone too far. Either way, this was definitely a sign of the troubles to come for the young pop star. After her later marriage to Kevin Federline came the shaved head and then a full on breakdown. Luckily, Brit seems to be doing ok these days.

Okay, I know you’re thinking Sveto-who? Model/actress Robin Givens did marry again after her tumultuous marriage to boxer Mike Tyson. In 1997 Robin married a tennis instructor named Svetozar Marinkovic. The two separated the day they wed and Givens officially filed for divorce months later. Oops!

I’m not against divorce – in fact, I am all for it in some cases. I mean, surely it’s much better to live alone and happy than in a marriage that sucks, right? But Hanneke’s approach to divorce made me think: are we now reaching for divorce as more of a first option, rather than a last resort after all other measures have been exhausted?

Take Halle Berry for instance. Just this week she purported to not being “the marrying kind,” but she has already been married and divorced. Twice. So obviously she thought she was the marrying kind at some point? Or did she just think that she could give it a shot, and if it doesn’t work out, no harm done? And what about Brad Pitt, he once said in an interview with GQ that “the idea that marriage has to be for all time, that I don’t understand.” But, in fact, isn’t the “forever” part, the whole idea of marriage? Isn’t, as an editorial on Elle.com claims, “the essence of marriage a lifetime commitment, without which, marriage just becomes legally sanctioned dating”?

William J. Doherty, PhD, a professor of family social science, agrees with the claim that people don’t take marriage as seriously as they used to. He claims that in surveys where divorced people are asked why they split, “soft reasons” such as: ‘the sex isn’t good’; ‘we see life so differently’; ‘we argue but never get anywhere,’ are rising. He criticizes our society for being to quick to reach for divorce and break our wedding vows, and he notes, “for me, it goes back to a promise made. It’s about integrity. What’s the meaning of the promise if you don’t bend heaven and earth to keep it?”

Clearly with the advancement of women’s liberation and more women in the workforce with their own income, societies attitude to divorce has changed, as more women are able to take care of themselves, by themselves. But is that the only reason more and more marriages end in divorce these days, or do we just not value marriage the same way? We live in a throw-away society, where things aren’t made to last and we upgrade our cars, tv’s, houses, and clothes every few years, so why not our marriages?

Here are a few tips to help you achieve forward motion in the quest for a healthy measure of success and happiness in all areas of life:

• Get clear. How can you know what is expected of you if you are not clear about what exactly you are trying to achieve? In the workplace you must get clear direction from your superior. In your relationships you have to have an open dialog about what you are trying to gain collectively and what are you “bottom line” of needs. Likewise, if you are currently not in a relationship or on a job, you should get a blank journal book for each and begin to clearly define for yourself what you require to be happy and successful in your career and at home. Be specific in your wants, needs and desires so that you can begin to focus your energy toward those things and most certainly, when you believe that it is possible for you then you will begin to see opportunities open for you in the direction of your vision.
• Set forth your intentions. You cannot hit a target if you cannot see it.  Once you have become clear about what you want from your career and in your love life then you can start to visualize yourself in that space. If you have been unfulfilled in past relationships, with lovers and workplace it will be challenging get out of the cycle of being unfulfilled. Visualizing yourself as you would like to experience your relationships and successful career opens your mind on a subconscious level to the belief that obtaining these things is actually a possibility for YOU. Hitting your target is much easier if you can see what it is that you are aiming for, so set forth your intentions.
• Seek out necessary resources. When you stop learning you should be dead – I mean that literally. The time to learn is now and always. Read books, go to seminars, buy programs that will help you advance, attend retreats, talk to your mentors, have lunch with the CEO of your company and other successful people in life, and do whatever it takes to develop the necessary tools for obtaining massive success, abundance and overflowing love. No need to wait until the need arises to learn a new skill, by that time you are already behind the curve. Add the knowledge to your toolbox and when needed you will instinctively use what you already know.
• Push beyond your limitations. While comfort zones are comfortable, they are also limiting.  Sometimes we get caught in these comfort zones and mistake them for what is “meant to be” but you’ll find that if you are willing to push yourself out of this space you will likely be met with success and happiness beyond your imagination. If you’ve only ever dated one type of person then open yourself to others. African American women are notorious for this by exclusively dating within the race, but the love of her life may not be of her nationality and by limiting herself; she’ll never have the opportunity to find out. If you’ve only ever worked one type of job, it may be time to adapt your skill set and look into another. There’s the old adage that says if you do what you’ve always done then you’ll get what you’ve always gotten. That couldn’t be more truthful. Is it time for you to push beyond your limitations?
• Go above and beyond. Don’t be afraid to take on new challenges without being instructed to do so.  Take the initiative to do more than is expected of you. Since mediocrity is the norm your enthusiastic efforts to do more will be noticed and presumably rewarded. More importantly, you will begin to have higher standards for yourself which will undoubtedly set you apart from the rest. And as you know, top quality positions take top quality people to fill them; professionally and personally. If it is your intention to secure a worthy position in your career and love life, then it is up to you to standout from the crowd.
• Take action now. Procrastination can be your worst enemy. The most common reasons that people procrastinate is because they don’t know where/how to begin, it appears overwhelming, they haven’t obtained the proper resources and they are afraid of change. Rarely is it because they are lazy. Laziness is something completely different. There is no better time than now to take action toward achieving your own success and happiness. NOW is the right time to get clear, set forth your intentions, seek out the necessary resources, push beyond your limitations, and to go above and beyond. Are you not worth a successful career, a happy home and enjoying the love of your life? It is up to you to put your plan in motion.

Ojani Noa, Husband: The couple met while Noa worked as a waiter at a Miami. They married in February 1997, just one month before her breakout role in “Selena” hit screens. They divorced just 10 months later in January 1998.

Sean “Puffy” Combs, Boyfriend: Not too long after her divorce, the two moguls-in-the-making became a couple in 1998. Seemingly a musical match made in heaven, they shared a 2-year relationship until 2000, that ultimately came under stress in 1999 when the two were involved in a New York nightclub melee.

Cris Judd, Husband: The singer married her back-up dancer in September 2001 after meeting him on the set of her “Love Don’t Cost A Thing” video. My family tree is full of divorce and divorce was an option for me so when I became unhappy, I bounced.

I work a lot harder in my current marriage to keep both me and my wife happy. Because of the energy and effort that I put into my marriage today, my wife is also unafraid to give her maximum effort in our marriage. Marriage is hard work but you have to want it! Divorce is not an option for us. I am not encouraging people to stay married and be unhappy. I am encouraging people to figure out how to be happy. People figure out stuff every day but when it comes to their marriages they give up. Someone is reading this article at a job that they hate, but you know what? They will figure how to go back to that same job tomorrow. We have too many people trying to be the best lawyers, doctors, rappers and athletes but we don’t have enough people trying to be the best husbands or wives. My role as a husband is by far the most important role that I have. Nothing else is even close. I tell couples every day that God is #1 in my life. My wife is #2. My wife is also #3. #4 is vacant; I don’t want anything close to my wife. #5 is my son, momma, the Raiders, LSU, the Miami Heat, friends and frat.

Obviously, nobody wants to believe that maybe they would say “yes” to a marriage proposal, just to have a wedding and for the thrill of writing “Mrs” next to your name, but according to Shine, a survey conducted by therapist Jennifer Gauvain, found that 30% of now-divorced women say they knew in their gut they were making a mistake as they walked down the aisle; but they did it anyway!

So the question is; why? Why go through with a wedding, if you know that something’s not right in the relationship beforehand?

Shine’s articles argues that the fairy-tale view of love and romance we have instilled in us as children is to blame, for as Gauvain notes; “we are raised with an unrealistic impression of what love is supposed to look like… Girls read fairy tales where the woman gets saved by the prince, and when they’re older, the same message is enforced through romantic comedies where love always prevails, despite impossible scenarios. So women learn that love can always work, even when it’s unhealthy.”

While I agree with that to an extent, it seem like a cop out to me. Yes, everyone want to believe that a storybook romance will happen for them and they will be the next Kate Middleton or even just end up like Amber Rose and Toya Carter, with a career and buckets of cash from the relationship, but what good is it if you’re Kate Middleton but not in love with your husband, or he’s not in love with you? (remember Princess Diana, anyone?) You might have the ring and an awesome party, but is it worth it?

In my opinion, the marrying just to get married and have a wedding thing, has more to do with competition and “winning” than a desire for a fairytale romance. One of my girls, Tori, is currently dating a guy who is going to be deported back to Canada. He suggested they get married so he can stay in the country, but wait for it, she “shouldn’t get the wrong idea, it’s not a real marriage,” (yes, I know, what an ass.) But the real kicker is, she wants to go ahead with it, and is telling everyone that she’s getting married and she even bought herself a ring. To a lady in the elevator the other day who congratulated her on the ring, she boasted about how romantic the proposal was and how excited she was for the wedding. To my raised eyebrows, and to answer the question that I hadn’t yet asked but was about to, about why she was settling for a guy who clearly treats her like a doormat, she said; “what? You don’t understand, you’re just mad at him, cos’ I got engaged first.”

Oh yeah, that must be it.

But her comment got me wondering if there really is a big competition to not be the last one of your friends to get married? Sadly, I think that there is still pressure to not be the last single girl standing. Has anyone seen the fight that breaks out when a bride throws the bouquet? I still don’t know why though; is it a showing off thing? Is it about proving that you’ve grown up? Is getting married still one of the ways we use to measure success, and if you don’t have the husband, then you haven’t really achieved?

Or is it just to be the one who has the most beautiful wedding dress, the best party and the most handsome husband, to ensure the most fabulous wedding photos? I would like to think that we wouldn’t get married for one day, one dress, one party, but 30% of divorced women and shows like “Bridezillas” and “4 Weddings” seem to disagree…

Now that the gag order has been lifted, Steve is finally able to speak out about the accusations.  During the show, Steve mentioned that he only wanted to clear his name, and not bash his ex-wife in the media because he raises all of his sons to respect their mother and women. Such a gentleman!

Barbara Walters and Elizabeth Hasselbeck read through the details of his recent court battle to ‘The View’s’ audience. The judge ruled that Mary was not left broke or homeless after their divorce, that Steve is the primary guardian of their son, and that their divorce was due to “irreconcilable differences” and that Steve’s current wife, Marjorie, was not the cause of the split.

As you know, Steve Harvey is the author of “Act Like A Lady, Think Like A Man” and “Straight Talk, No Chaser” which are both books geared toward women on how to get, keep and form lasting relationships with men. Steve, being the ‘relationship guru’ that he is, went on to discuss his definition of a ‘real man’, stating that real men can not live without women. I concur.

“I plan on filing for divorce in the next couple of weeks. It’s a new year and I just want to put this behind me,” Jennifer tells Life & Style exclusively. “He doesn’t know exactly when I’m going to do it. He’s just waiting for me to pull the trigger.”

According to Bobbie, the judge granted Steve a temporary injuction against those YouTube videos that Mary made, and gave the Harveys a “contempt of court” hearing date for March 10, 2011. When the Harveys appear in court on that date, it will be to decide if Mary should be sanctioned or punished for violating the couple’s gag order.

As previously reported, Gregg let slip last year that he wants NeNe to repay him the $300,000 that he spent trying to make her a household name on the popular Bravo reality show. “Once he met her he kicked us out of the house,” Damian said, “the young siblings went to my mom’s, and he just ran off to start a whole new life literally in front of our faces.”

Damian’s father was divorced at the time he met NeNe, but added that soon after their introduction at the gentleman’s club where Damian said his father worked, the children were quickly moved out of the picture.

It was reported that Tony filed for divorce in Texas on November 15, however, Eva’s people deny that story.

What was confirmed though by two court officials at the Bexar County, Texas courthouse is that a divorce case was indeed filed yesterday and sealed by the judge.
