Greetings Everyone!

This weekend is Father’s Day, and it’s also the late great E. Lynn Harris’s birthday weekend. On Sunday, June 20, he would have turned 55 years old. In July of 2009, E. Lynn died of a heart attack in Los Angeles, California. The literary world mourned the passing of one of its greatest writers and pioneers.

I hope you all will help myself, Stanley Bennett Clay, and James Earl Hardy celebrate Father’s Day and E. Lynn’s life. Help us give E. Lynn a wonderful Father’s Day and birthday gift by supporting our newest tribute book, Visible Lives.

Visible Lives is a powerful tribute to the late Harris in which three authors present new novellas in the genre E. Lynn helped to create. I conceived the idea and concept for the tribute book, Visible Lives and enlisted the contributions of fellow authors Stanley Bennett Clay and James Earl Hardy.

The Trip consists of the following elements, all as determined by Sweepstakes Administrator and Prize Provider, in their sole discretion: (a) round-trip coach class air transportation for Grand Prize Winner and Guest from a major U.S. gateway airport nearest Grand Prize Winner’s residence to one of the major airports nearest Greenwood, Mississippi; (b) three days and two nights hotel accommodations (standard room, double occupancy) at a hotel chosen by Sweepstakes Administrator in its sole discretion); (c) $100 to be awarded as a check or in some other form as determined by Sweepstakes Administrator in its sole discretion; (d) a visit to the set of the filming of The Help, ground transportation provided, with the chance to meet talent and filmmakers, and; (e) a Featured Blogger login, provided by HelloBeautiful.com, for the winner to submit two posts that documents their on-set experience.

Estimated Retail Value (“ERV”) of the Grand Prize is $2,000.

Actual Grand Prize value may vary depending upon the actual cost of air transportation from point of departure at time of reservation. Sweepstakes Administrator will furnish an Internal Revenue Service Form 1099 to Grand Prize Winner for the final actual value of the Grand Prize for the tax year in which the Grand Prize was used. The value of Grand Prize represents Sweepstakes Administrator’s good faith determination of the maximum retail value thereof. Neither transportation nor accommodations in Greenwood will be included in the Grand Prize for any winner who lives within a 50 mile radius of Greenwood. Sweepstakes Administrator and Prize Provider, in their sole discretion, may substitute ground transportation for airfare if the Grand Prize Winner lives within a 100 mile radius of Greenwood, Mississippi. Once determined, no change, extension, or substitution of travel dates and/or times is permitted, except by Sweepstakes Administrator in its sole discretion. Grand Prize Winner and Guest must travel together on the same itinerary. Grand Prize consists only of the elements set forth above. Miss Black Britain 2009 was brandished a ‘shambles’ after host Nia Long walked out during the event, and ticket holders claimed they were ‘conned’.  Chaos kicked off behind the scenes when co-host Nia left the building midway through the event – before Rikaya Tagoe,was declared the winner.

Nia’s international publicist, Jessica Huie, was PR for the event, but ditched her post a day before the show.

She told OvergroundOnline:

‘Nia was disappointed that the lack of organisation lead to her early departure. She and I arrived at the venue at 7pm as requested to perform a walk-through before the show opened at 8pm.

‘On arrival we were informed by the organisers that Ms Long’s co-host [UK model Ainslee, below] “was not confident” enough and they had been left to draft in an alternative co-host. This meant the script which Ms Long had rehearsed was now defunct.

‘The chaotic scene which met us on arrival due to the road closures around the venue earlier in the day, suggested a severe lack of organisation, and this was not a scenario either myself or Ms Long were comfortable she host in.

‘Having agreed to attend purely as a support for the contestants and the positive ethos of the Miss Black Britain concept, Ms Long agreed to stay in a judging capacity.

‘The show opened 90 minutes late, by which point Ms Long had been sitting in her dressing room for almost two hours. Due to a previously organised engagement at 11pm, we had no option but to leave the venue at the interval.

‘If the show had run to schedule Ms Long would have remained present throughout, and was disappointed that the lack of organisation lead to her early departure.’

He asked her a question

YES was the reply

every woman’s dream

yet it ended up being a lie

she told all of her friends

congratulations was in order

how happy her mother was

for her beautiful daughter

He was the one who set the date

He was the one so excited

hotels to book plans to make

all the family will be invited

should have seen the ring yall

2 carat Marquise cut

simple girl taken aback

she thought it was a bit much

the ladies got together

made it a date to find her gown

beautiful in the mirror

but under the veil a frown

something wasn’t quite right

she felt it in her soul

this is the dress but hold it for me

is what the sales woman was told

she dialed his phone to tell her future

all about the find

to her surprise someone picked up

another woman was on the line

3 1/2 years of her life shattered as

the phone hit the floor

the woman on the other end changed the game

see they had already been married 4

the ring she described too a tee

cause she had seen it before

it belonged to her but swollen with his seed

she could not fit it anymore

She had met the family spent holidays

and no one said a word

sang Christmas songs went to church

she even helped auntie cook the bird

She was the other woman and everyone knew

yet no one said a thing

if she had known what was real

she would have never accepted the ring

Don’t worry she’s doing better now

actually she is doing great

She takes it one day at a time

and tries to meditate

This was not Lifetime honey

I swear this is all true

because I am she and she is me

I am a 27 year old woman who hasn’t let misfortune get the best of me. I grew up with parents who chose drugs and alcohol over me and my syblings. My maternal grandmother was all that we had. After she passed, I grew up in and out of foster homes. I’ve experienced any and everything that one could imagine. Just from all of the bad experiences that I’ve been handed, I pretty much came to the conclusion that no one would or could ever love me. On my 22nd birthday, I met a man who I instantly hit it off with. I had just met him on my birthday and he came to my home with flowers and a card for me. I had never experienced that before. He took me out to dinner and got me the prettiest necklace that I had ever owned. We instantly hit it off. I really thought he was going to love me for ever after a while of dating. We didn’t even make love for the first three months, which further made me believe that he really was there for me. Four months of us dating, he had went to prison for 15 months. Though he landed in a bad situation, I decided that I was going to ride it out with him. I honestly felt as if We were meant for each other. I didn’t have a car when he went away, so I worked extra hard and was blessed with a car, then, I moved us into a new apartment, and picked up a second job to ensure that I would be able to take care of him, myself, and the expenses. I never missed a visit, never cheated, and never lied to him. He would tell me how much he loved me and how he couldn’t wait to come home and pick up where we left off. Even though we were in the situation we were in, I wouldn’t and couldn’t leave him. I was all he had and vice versa. Finally, he returned home. I thanked God every day and night that he was finally back in my arms. I made sure the apartment was cleaned, his clothes were washed, ironed and put away, he never missed a meal, and on top of that, I was still working two jobs and preparing to enter into college to further myself for not only me, but us. A month after he came home, he started to act differently towards me. He started staying out all night and not answering his cell phone. I would cry myself to sleep at night and ask God why was the man I vowed to stand by began to treat me this way. After about two months of him being home, I became pregnant; then that’s when it all really began. He would stay gone for days at a time. Then I started hearing that he was back with his ex wife. The rumor was found to be true. He left me and moved to be back with her. I went through my first pregnancy by myself. At about five months, I was put on bed rest but because I had no one to help me, I had no choice but to continue on working and lifting grocery bags. I went into labor three weeks early. He was there to see her be born. He stayed with us for two weeks. In those weeks, I felt as if we would be a family again. But then, he left again. I cried so hard. Here I was alone with a brand new baby. I had no idea what to do. Thanks to the lord blessing me with inner strenghth, I got through it. I raised my baby as best I could. I was in college, when she turned six months, I was also working. I did it. I did it. I was so proud of myself. I was never with another man since I met him and to this day. My daughter is now going to be three in two months and I couldn’t be any more proud of her than I am now. She is so smart and intelligent. I have been on deans list since I began my college career. Looking back, I used to ask myself, do I regret going through any of it? My answer to that is no. It made me so strong and I am so proud of myself. I didn’t allow what a man did to my heart keep me down. Now, he comes along telling me how he is sorry that he put me throught that and broke my heart. I forgave him. I am strong enough to forgive. Rather I win this contest or not, I am so glad that I got the chance to share my story with other women. Just know that a man is just that, a man. He may have the power to break your heart and make you cry, but he doesn’t have the power to keep you down and stop your dreams from forming. Only you have that power. I am so glad that I didn’t give that power to him. After my harsh childhood and broken heart, God has blessed me with a beautiful baby girl who gives me strength to go on everyday. I used to think that no one would or could love me, but now, I love myself. And that is all that matters!

Want to know her favorite home beauty remedy?

This recipe can be used as a body butter AND a hair moisturizer!

7oz unrefined Shea butter
4oz Aloe Vera Gelly (Clear, Fruit of the Earth brand from Target)
3oz Coconut Oil
2oz oil of your choice
OPTIONAL: Drops of your fave EOs if you don’t use a strong flavor oil

First, melt the Shea butter in a glass bowl set in boiling water. Soften coconut oil in the microwave (not all the way to liquid) then mix in a glass bowl with the Aloe gel and Banana oil with a wire whisk. When Shea butter fully melts, pour it in the Aloe/oil mix. Beat with mixer on medium speed for about two minutes. Then pour into an empty plastic container that has an air tight lid. Put it in the fridge for a couple of hours to solidify.

The HELLOBEAUTIFUL.com Nelly’s Apple Bottoms Giveaway Contest (”Contest”) will begin at 12:00 PM on March 15, 2010 and end at 11:59 PM March 29, 2010 (”Contest Period”). One (1) winner will be awarded one (1) prize package

HOW TO ENTER:

1. Legal residents of the U.S. who are 16 years of age or older and are members of BlackPlanet.com will be able to take part in this Contest. To participate in the Contest, participants must do the following:

2. Go to HELLOBEAUTIFUL.com and in the comment section of the designated article, submit a photo of yourself in your best Apple Bottom outfit.

Photographic entries must:

• contain ONE person

• not be patently offensive, illegal, pornographic or obscene, or similarly inappropriate in Sponsor’s sole discretion.

• not infringe upon any rights of any third party including without limitation, copyright, trademark and right of publicity or privacy

• be taken and solely owned by the photographer (who is the contestant or parent/legal guardian) submitting the photo

• be unpublished and not have been submitted in other competitions

3. Contestants must be registered members of BlackPlanet.com to submit their comments at HELLOBEAUTIFUL.com. Membership is free. To join, go to BlackPlanet.com and submit the requested information.

4. Upon entering the Contest website, participants with a valid email address are to follow the on-screen instructions. Once a member becomes a winner, they will be contacted to confirm, their name, address, phone number, email address, and additional contact information in order to mail the prize to the winner’s residence.

5. Photo entries submitted by Contest participants will not be judged and will have no bearing on determining the grand prize winner, except that entries that do not contain the photo will be disqualified.

5. All Internet entries/comments must be received by 11:59 PM EST on March 29, 2010 or they will be void.

6. One entry per person per day during the Contest Period.

7. In the event of a dispute regarding the identity of a participant’s online entry, the entry will be deemed to have been made by the authorized holder of the e-mail account at the time the entry was made.

8. The entry photo submitted by the winning contestant will be posted on the Contest website

ELIGIBILITY RESTRICTIONS:

1. The Contest is open only to legal residents of the United States who are registered members of BlackPlanet.com, and are 16 years of age or older at the time of Contest registration.

2. Employees of Radio One, Inc., Community Connect, Inc. or Interactive One, LLC (together “Company”), its officers, directors, subsidiaries, affiliates, general sponsors, promotional partners, their respective subsidiaries, affiliates, parent companies, members of the immediate families (defined as spouse, child, sibling, parent, or grandparent), and members of the households (whether related or not) of any of the above are NOT eligible to participate or win in this Contest.

3. Persons who have won a prize in another contest or promotion of any kind from Company within the thirty-day (30) period immediately preceding the start date of this Contest are not eligible to participate

4. Contestants agree to abide with any applicable federal, state, local laws and regulations.

PRIZES:

Prize package will include the following: one (1) bottle of Nelly’s Apple Bottoms Perfume

One (1) prize package will be awarded during the Contest Period.

1. If a winner is unable to accept the prize, the prize will be forfeited in its entirety.

2. No substitution of prize is offered, no transfer of prize to a third party is permitted and non-cash prizes may not be redeemed for cash value, except as determined by Company management and/or the sponsor in its sole discretion.

3. All Contest winners must sign and date official Company release and waiver forms as requested. Failure to do so will result in the winner’s forfeiture of the prize.

4. All cash prizes won will be awarded in the form of a check.

5. Company will award the prizes only upon winner verification and final approval. Each winner or selected entrant will be notified by email, mail and/or phone within five (5) days after being selected (e.g., date of drawing). Each winner or selected entrant will then have five (5) days to respond with their information. Company will then send prizes or prize-verification information via the U.S. Mail. If the winner or selected entrant is unable to be contacted within five (5) days after being selected (e.g. drawing date), is ineligible, fails to claim a prize or fails to return completed and executed release forms and affidavits, if applicable and as required by Company, or if the prize notification or prize is returned undeliverable, that prize will be forfeited and an alternate entrant will be selected. If the winner is a minor (under the age of eighteen (18)), all release forms and affidavits must be signed by the winner’s parent or legal guardian.

EXECUTION:

1. During the Contest Period, eligible participants will be encouraged to take part in the Contest by commenting online at HELLOBEAUTIFUL.com. After completing their comments regarding a designated article posted on HELLOBEAUTIFUL.com, and submitting their photo entry in the comment section, entrants will be qualified for a chance to win the prize.

2. The grand prize drawing will take place on March 30, 2010. One (1) winner will be selected by random drawing from among all eligible entries received.

3. The winner will be notified by email. Winner will be required to provide HELLOBEAUTIFUL.com with a mailing address to ship the prize. Interactive One, LLC will then ship one (1) prize package to the winner.

4. The entry submitted by the winning contestant will be posted on the Contest website.

5. All decisions made by Company management regarding any aspect of this Contest are final.

GENERAL CONDITIONS:

1. Winners are responsible for all applicable taxes associated with the receipt of the prize (prizes are not transferable and may not be exchanged).

2. Any person winning over $600.00 in prizes will receive an IRS form 1099 at the end of the calendar year for tax purposes and a copy of such form will be filed with the IRS as required by law.

3. No purchase necessary. Contest is void where prohibited. Contest is subject to all applicable federal, state, local laws and regulations.

4. Odds of winning depend upon the number of eligible contestants participating during the Contest Period.

5. By participating in the Contest, the winner or winners agree to have their name, voice, or likeness used in any advertising or broadcasting material relating to this Contest, in any media now known or hereafter devised for advertising or promotional purposes without additional compensation, and must sign a publicity release prior to acceptance of the prize. By entering this Contest, each participant agrees to comply with these Official Contest Rules and the decisions of the Contest sponsor which shall be final and binding in all aspects relating to the Contest.

6. Company retains the right to disqualify any contestant if all contest rules are not followed.

7. All Contest winners will be required to sign a liability release prior to acceptance of any prize. Pursuant to the liability release, the winner or winners will agree to hold Company, any other Contest parties and each of their respective affiliates, subsidiaries, agencies, officers, shareholders, directors, employees, agents and representatives of each of the foregoing, harmless against any and all claims or liability, directly or indirectly related to or arising from or in connection with Contest participation or the acceptance, possession or use / misuse of any awarded prize or any portion thereof, or participation in prize-related activities, including but not limited to any related travel.

8. By accepting the prize, the winner acknowledges that Company has neither made, nor is in any manner responsible or liable for, any warranty, representation or guarantee, express or implied, in fact or in law, relative to the prize or to any portion thereof, including but not limited to its quality, mechanical condition or fitness for a particular purpose.

9. Any information collected by registering to enter the Contest shall be used only in a manner consistent with these Official Contest Rules.

10. Company, participating sponsors and their respective parent companies, subsidiaries, affiliates or their representatives, agents and employees are not responsible for the inability of any contestant to complete or continue an internet registration due to equipment malfunction, busy lines, inadvertent disconnections, unavailable network, server, Internet Service Provider (ISP) or other connections, communication failures or human error that may occur in the transmission, receipt or processing of entries, including any injury or damage to participant’s or any other person’s computer arising from or relating to participation in this Promotion,. In addition, Company, participating sponsors and their respective parent companies, subsidiaries, affiliates or their representatives, agents and employees are not responsible for late, postage due, lost, misdirected, mutilated, illegible or incomplete contest entries. No mechanically reproduced or automated entries permitted. Entry materials/data that have been tampered with or altered are void. Once submitted, entries become the property of Company and will not be returned.

11. If for any reason, the Contest is not capable of running as planned, including without limitation, any suspected evidence of tampering or technological corruption or if any portion of the promotion is compromised by virus, bugs, worms or unauthorized human intervention, fraud, acts of God, strikes, terrorists acts, criminal acts of third parties, an insufficient number of qualified contest entries, or any other causes beyond Company’s control which, in the Company’s sole opinion, corrupts, threatens or impairs the administration, security, fairness, integrity, or proper conduct of the Contest, Company reserves the right to cancel, terminate, modify or suspend the Contest at its sole discretion.

12. Any attempt by an entrant to deliberately undermine the legitimate operation of the Contest may be in violation of criminal and civil laws and should such an attempt be made, Company reserves the right to seek remedies and damages (including attorney’s fees) from any such entrant to the fullest extent of the law, including criminal prosecution.
