It’s been reported that police in D.C., the city with the highest rate of HIV/AIDS in the country, are using possession of condoms as evidence of sex work.

And they’re not the only ones; New York and San Francisco have used safe-sex devices as a means for arrest, as well.

WTF? How can it be legal to punish, wrongfully label, and mar one’s public image all because he or she made a conscious decision, at some point, to do what they’ve probably been told their whole life?

I remember being told to abstain from sex. At least until marriage. And if I wasn’t planning on abstaining, I was supposed to use protection. And if I was to use protection, I wasn’t supposed to depend on the guy to bring it. Meaning I had to make the “walk of shame” to the nearest CVS myself, past the hair and body products, and into the family planning (or lack thereof) section. “Put your life into your own hands” – it was said and it was true. And then, unfortunately, in high school, someone mentioned that girls who carried condoms were “easy” and those that were easily influenced stopped using them and some got pregnant and some didn’t. (What definitely didn’t happen though were those girls becoming prostitutes but, I guess, that’s a minor oversight.)

There was a contradiction, though. Getting free condoms from the nurse was always an option, but never a rule. It was promoted, but looked down upon. READ MORE BELOW THE GALLERY!

Would You Dime Out Your Friend For Cheating?

Cosmo’s iPhone App: “Sex Position Of The Day”

And the same goes for the grand city of New York. It’s been distributing free condoms to combat STDs since 1971, but some businesses are even afraid to offer them because they can also be used as evidence of “maintaining a premises for prostitution.” In D.C., if caught carrying three or more condoms in a “Prostitution Free Zone,” you can be accused of intent to sell sex. But in San Francisco, police defended this practice by claiming that “a pocket full of condoms alone is not a basis for arrest.”

A basis for arrest? Should it be a factor at all?

I’m not condoning public sex – far from it. But a late night out, a single car ride somewhere, and a pocketful of condoms doesn’t always mean prostitution – maybe one hell of a night with no inhibitions and a happy ending, but not illegal sex.

What do YOU think? Are the police infringing on our human rights? Or taking needed precaution?

The Female Health Company (FHC) announced that its second-generation FC2 Female Condom® is now available for purchase in the United States. The condom received regulatory approval from the Food and Drug Administration in March as an HIV prevention method.

The new condoms will be 30% cheaper than its predecessor and are supposed to be more user friendly. FHC hopes this help in the fight against the global HIV epidemic and other sexually transmitted diseases.

The new female condom is synthetic rubber rather than polyurethane, allowing for a less costly manufacturing process and quieter sound that is less likely to disrupt the intimate act. Also there are hopes the new price will make it more attractive to health organizations for distribution.

While the female condom is not popular in the United States it is used widely in other countries, especially those countries that are hard hit by the HIV epidemic. It is seen as a tool to empower women and protect them even when their male partners will not.

“America’s HIV epidemic isn’t going away. In fact, it’s getting worse, and African American and Latino women are disproportionately impacted… It’s time to provide women in heavily impacted communities with expanded access to affordable women-controlled options, and the female condom becomes that choice. Women will use it if they have it,” said Dazon Dixon Diallo, Founder and President of SisterLove, a grassroots service organization that supports HIV/AIDS prevention and women’s reproductive health programs in the Atlanta, Georgia.

According to FHC, 7 of the top 10 states ranked by the rate of AIDS cases are in the U.S. South.

“Just this once?”

“Nah, I can’t. That’s not even my dude/chick like that.”

“I wonder if she is on the pill.”

Thankfully, cooler heads prevailed. Oh, I didn’t say you aren’t tight that you can’t get none. You are beyond pissed but being a mature adult, you are proud of yourself for doing the right thing.

But who should be in charge of having the condoms?

When I was younger I automatically thought it was the guy’s responsibility. I’m talking young, young like teens and early 20s. Then I got to college and the RA taped them to our doors and had a fish bowl full of them in their room. My girls and I would grab a handful in jest because we were too shy to say “I’m getting some dick from this guy in my Poly Sci class tonight and want to make sure we’re strapped.” Instead, we’d shyly laugh at the various colors and tastes and place them in our underwear draw like we never plan on using them…READ THE REST HERE!

Face it: Accidents happen. One night a condom could break. Or you stupidly might not have used one at all. But don’t panic. Here’s a complete primer on everything you need to know about preventing pregnancy and protecting yourself from STDs after you’ve done the deed.

If you wind up in this nail-biting situation, don’t waste time cursing yourself out for not being more careful. You need to act quickly to prevent your biggest concerns from coming true. Whether you’re worried about an unwanted pregnancy or an STD infection — or both — we’ve mapped out a clear guide to get you through. You’ll want to print out these pages and keep them in your nightstand…just in case.

Your Damage-Control Timeline
The morning after: Get your gyno to phone in an Rx for emergency contraception to your pharmacy. Also — unless you know your partner is STD-free — make two appointments for testing, one in a week and the second in three months.

One to five days later: Take emergency contraception as soon as you can get your hands on it (ideally on the first day, since the earlier you take it, the more effective it is).

One week later: Go to your gyno to get a preventive shot against hepatitis B and be tested for gonorrhea, trichomoniasis and chlamydia.

Five to seven days later: If you haven’t taken emergency contraception yet, consider having an IUD inserted and make an appointment for the procedure ASAP.

One week after your next period was due: If you haven’t had your period yet, take a home-pregnancy test to make sure the emergency contraception worked.

Three months later: Go in for your second round of STD testing — this time for HIV, herpes, hepatitis C and syphilis.

Many women suffer through some type of discomfort during sex. Much of this discomfort is often ignored or even considered normal. The truth is that sex should never be uncomfortable, not even one bit. Here’s a few things to consider if something just isn’t quite right during your passionate moments in the bedroom.

Lubrication. This is where things could get a little sticky. Of course, there’s nothing wrong with a little lube during your lovemaking (It’s a lot of pressure on a girl to keep things friction free!) but some lubes contain ingredients that can cause irritation.

1) The first culprit could be glycerin. Glycerin is a sugar and is used to make lube taste sweet. The only problem is that sugar is that promotes yeast growth. So if you’re prone to yeast infections steer clear of glycerin! There are many glycerin free lubes out there such as Sliquid (which comes in yummy glycerin-free flavored versions!), Astroglide Free, Babelube and Liquid Silk just to name a few. Lastly, silicone lube is the most non-irritating and body safe option out there.

2) Parabens are chemical softeners that we don’t actually know much about. They could lead to cancer, infertility, birth defects and possibly more. Sliquid makes great paraben-free lubricants that can help you out.

3) Check the label for any ingredients that you know you are allergic to. This sounds simple but a lot of organic or natural lubes contain extracts from essential oils that you may be allergic to.

My advice is to do some research and find a specialty store in your hometown (or even online) where you can get quality lubricants. Often your drugstore will only offer the bottom of the barrel for lubricants.

Latex. Many people have latex allergies that they are unaware of. Don’t worry about being safe because there’s plenty of condoms made out of polyurethane that will ease those latex allergies. Try Trojan’s Supra brand or Durex’s Avanti brand.

Nonoxynol-9 (spermicide). Most condom manufacturers have recognized this ingredient as hazardous to one’s health. This chemical is used in spermicidal lubricants and actually irritates the mucous membranes down there. This can increase the transmission of STIs and especially HIV. Many women find this ingredient to be extremely irritating, even to the point of excruciating pain.

Semen. Yes, it’s true that you could be allergic to your partner’s ejaculate. The pH level of semen is more alkaline where as the pH of the vagina is more on the acidic side. So when you’re having everything can go haywire down there. If you find out that this is in fact the problem, it’s not the end of the world. Some minor adjustments can have you both sharing the love once again.
