Which chapter of your book resonates most with you?
My open letter to [my ex-girlfriend, singer] Erykah [Badu] is a chapter in my life that resonates with me. It was a time of reflection. I learned a lot about Rashid Lynn when I was with Erykah. During our relationship, I often chose to think, I’ll chill and let other people get their way, because that’s just who I was in all of my relationships with friends and family. I’d choose to take a [backseat], and getting to see that in myself while she and I were together was enlightening. I eventually realized I don’t need to be that person. I learned to speak my mind and be the man I’m supposed to be. It was a release.

What lessons did you learn while dating tennis great Serena Williams?
As far as me being in love, I’ve learned to just be myself—more of a man—in any relationship, whether I was dating Serena or whomever. Finally, I feel I’m able to be me and really know what I want and make steps toward those things that are special to me. Like I want children, I want to have a home, I should be starting a family. One difference between Erykah and Serena was that the [presence of] paparazzi is much stronger now than it was in 2000 and 2001. Serena’s a super international star and my profile [when we were] together was a [big deal] for some people. I remember when I made the cover of the Chicago Sun Times for the first time it was in the middle of our relationship and I’m thinking, This is for real. People are paying attention. But I handle [the attention] the way real men do: Keep family and personal business in your home. When Common entered the scene in 1992 with his album, Can I Borrow a Dollar?, the new, mostly underground artist, found himself thrust into a music environment where game-changing albums such as Dr. Dre’s The Chronic, Ice Cube’s The Predator, and Eric B. & Rakim’s Don’t Sweat The Technique blazed trails in hip hop.  It would have been easy for Common to disappear into the history books of hip hop like many other artists of that time.  After all, the competition was stiff.  Yet, Common still stands today, not only as an accomplished and award-winning recording artist but also as a leading man who has co-starred alongside such thespians as Denzel Washington (American Gangster), Queen Latifah (Just Wright), Christian Bale (Terminator Salvation), Ray Liotta (Smokin Aces), Steve Carrell, Tina Fey and Mark Wahlburg (Date Night).

Despite his vast accomplishments as an artist, however, very little is actually known about Lonnie Rashid Lynn, the man.  That’s all about to change with the publication of ONE DAY IT’LL ALL MAKE SENSE (Atria Books; September 2011; $25).  In this deeply personal, introspective memoir, Common unveils himself, layer by layer, from his childhood on the streets of the South Side of Chicago; to grappling with the decision to leave college, disappointing his mother, and pursuing a career in hip hop; to emerging as a talented recording artist faced with all the trappings of fame and success but working hard to remain true to himself and the people who’d supported him along the way.  “People who know me as Common might find it hard to believe some of the things that made me Rashid,” says Common.  “That’s partly why I’ve written this book, so that I can show myself as a man in full.  That means telling some tough truths, revealing my faults and vulnerabilities.  But it also means showing the true strength of my character.”

Common’s journey is by no means a rags-to-riches story.  The emotional and spiritual place where Common is today came about as a result of witnessing the tragic losses of loved ones to addiction and the very cold, hard streets of the South Side of Chicago that were once his stomping grounds; making mistakes for which he dealt with the consequences but also learned from them; and loving hard and dealing with the end of failed relationships.

Common’s memoir also highlights the fact that his mother – his friend, confidante, and moral compass – very much contributed to his evolution as a man.  Readers will also absorb her words and perspectives about her son throughout the book, which makes for an incredibly balanced and honest look at the life of Lonnie Rashid Lynn.  She writes: “By the time he started getting exposed to street things, he had a foundation…It was also letting him have his freedom and make his mistakes…I think about it like little lion cubs.  The mother protects them until they’re old enough. But if you don’t put them in the wilderness they’ll never survive by themselves.”

Compiled with open letters to loved ones, both living and those who’ve passed on, peppered with lyrics from some of Common’s songs throughout his career and his mother’s unflinching insight, ONE DAY IT’LL ALL MAKE SENSE challenges the reader to look beyond the celebrity and understand fully the man behind the spotlight.  He also writes openly about his relationships with the women who have been a part of his life – Kim, the mother of his daughter, Omoye; singer Erykah Badu; and Academy Award nominated actress Taraji P. Henson – and how each played a role in his emotional growth as a man.  “Having a daughter has made me to understand people better – particularly women.  I began to consider and question how any woman I was dealing with might have been raised. Did she have her father in her life? What was she missing? What helped her move forward? Thinking about all that makes me want to make sure that I give all I can to my daughter,” writes Common.

The hip-hop “legend” (or so says his website), is the driving force behind a very worthwhile foundation called the “Common Ground Foundation,” which he says aims to help people “strive for greatness in any and everything you do.” On April 16, the foundation is hosting a gala in Chicago where he will be honoring women who represent award-worthy leadership skills across generations including Dr. Maya Angelou, Keke Palmer, Dee Robinson Reid and Sherri Shepherd.

For those who can’t make it to the gala, or those who cannot afford the $250 ticket, or $2250 table, the donation drive has been opened up online, where everyone who donates can win different prizes based on how much they can afford to donate. Tennis champ Serena Williams is single and ready for love.

Despite pulling out of the U.S. Open tournament due to an injured right foot and ending her two-year relationship with rapper and actor Common in April, Williams is in the market for Mr. Right.

So what should a guy do to date the top-ranked women’s tennis player in the world?

“Call me! It’s that easy. Just pick up the phone and call me!” Williams, 28, told PEOPLE.

More importantly, Williams wants to date a man with strong family values.

“I’m looking for a guy who is close to his parents – his mom mostly because you can learn a lot about a guy by the way he treats his mom,” she says. “And someone who loves themselves because if they take care of themselves, they are able to take care of you.”

As for dating deal-breakers, the tennis ace reveals she’s not keen on bad habits.

“I don’t like smokers, and of course people who disrespect their parents and families. Family is very important to me.”

Although Williams describes herself as “rough and tough” on the tennis court, off the court she insists men shouldn’t find her threatening.

He has been cast in AMC’s new pilot Hell on Wheels, a Western that centers on the building of the Transcontinental Railroad. The musician/actor most recently starred in the movie Just Wright, playing a basketball player who falls in love with his trainer, played by Queen Latifah. He also appeared in the Date Night with Steve Carell and Tina Fey.

In Hell on Wheels, he’ll play Elam, a freed slave who comes West seeking work on the railroad. Production is scheduled to begin in August in Alberta, Canada.

ON COMMON: They broke up in April. “His schedule is actually worse than mine,” she sighs. “He didn’t want the responsibility. It’s really tough.” Common then began promoting his latest film, heaping enough praise on Williams that people assumed they were still on. (“Beautiful, intelligent woman, fun and spiritual woman. I think she’s an incredible person,” he told Access Hollywood.)

Williams looks befuddled — befuddled but coquettish. “So I called him and I was like, Why are you saying all this stuff when we’re not together?”

ON HER PHYSIQUE: “When I was six or seven in a swimsuit — I look back at those picture, and my arms are cut and my legs are strong,” she says. “I didn’t realize that I was really fit and most people aren’t. To this day, I don’t love my arms. People want more fit arms, but my arms are too fit. But I’m not complaining. They pay my bills.”

“I was 23 when I realized that I wasn’t Venus. She’s totally different,” she explains. “I’m super-curvy. I have big boobs and this massive butt. She’s tall and she’s like a model and she fits everything. I was growing up, wanting to be her, wanting to look like her, and I was always fitting in her clothes, but then one day I couldn’t.” She pauses. “But it’s fine. Now I’m obviously good, but it’s a weird thing.”

ON FITNESS: After she won the Australian Open in January, “I wanted to get really fit. I wanted to lose some weight. So I’ve been doing Pilates and yoga, trying to lean out my body so I won’t be bulky.” Her regimen: Pilates two or three times a week and when she’s training for a tournament, “a couple of hours of hitting, then an hour or two of cardio and strengthening in the gym.”

Also, when she’s at home in L.A., she runs the half mile up a hill to Venus’s house instead of driving. But no dieting. “I don’t even know the D word,” she says with a laugh. There is a training eating plan, though: “Smaller portions of every meal, a lot of grilled or baked chicken or fish, and steamed veggies.” Her weakness? “I can never turn down a good piece of cherry pie, but,” she continues, “all I know is that in 10 years, I don’t want to be as wide as this couch.”

FROM FREDDYO: Common visited Atlanta earlier this week for an intimate meet & greet to answer a few questions about his new movie, Just Wright, starring Queen Latifah. He also shared his thoughts on his ex-girlfriend Erykah Badu’s “Window Seat” video, his relationship with Serena Williams and whether he would date a woman Queen Latifah’s size. Here are a few notes from the interview:

While addresses his transition from hip-hop to movies, Common revealed that he has always tried to remain true to himself, be creative and still have fun. He took acting lessons and takes his role as an actor very serious. He wants to have a long career in acting and is in it for the long haul.

On relationship with Serena Williams He says: He didn’t have to use any pick-up lines. He was just honest. He has great intuition and street sense when it comes to women and dating. He doesn’t knock women who admire him for his work, but she should still be able to hold her own. He can tell if someone is genuine.

On Black Romantic Comedies making a comeback: He is enthused and excited that films are starting to show another side… “I am really GEEKED. It’s like we can be classy, too. We love too. Love is universal.”

When asked would he date a woman of Queen Latifah’s size: He responded yes, if he was attracted to her. He stated, no matter a woman’s size, she should be able to love herself first, then she can get love in return.

On being a sex symbol: He definitely appreciates the love, but doesn’t take it to the head.

On Erykah Badu’s Window Seat Video: Common says he hasn’t seen the video yet. He says he is very low-tech and had a hard time finding it on YouTube. But he salutes Erykah Badu and agrees with his homeboys that “Yeah, she’s a sexy woman.” He thinks she is innovative and it was a great marketing strategy.

She also dated Common from 2000 to 2002.

JUST WRIGHT stars Queen Latifah as Leslie Wright, a straight-shooting physical therapist who gets the gig of a lifetime working with NBA All-Star Scott McKnight (Common). McKnight is drawn to the affections of Leslie’s gorgeous childhood friend Morgan (Paula Patton), who has her sights set on being an NBA trophy wife. Set against the exciting world of championship basketball, the game of love takes on the battle of the sexes in this romantic sports comedy.

NBA stars Dwight Howard and Dwyane Wade make cameos, as well.

Mos Def and Common will be two of several artists being filmed for a new music documentary series for cable channel Current TV titled “Embedded.”

The debut episode, airing October 14, spends seven days with Mos Def as he performed at venues in Tokyo and Osaka. Cameras capture him in a hotel room, wearing a bathrobe and smoking a cigarette, and discussing the differences between Japanese and American culture – revealing how impressed he is by the intensity of the local hip-hop fans who have been filling clubs for a week to see him perform.

The independent channel will later debut a few “best of” compilations from all of the episodes.

“No one is committing to this type of music programming in the television space,” said Davis Powers, VP of Music Programming at the network. “We wanted to commit to doing real music journalism and documentaries — and that comes with working with the artists on the ground floor.”
