Consider it the worst type of fashion blunder: Your favorite items could be at fault for otherwise-unexplained breakouts and rashes, according to Marie Claire‘s resident dermatologist and psychiatrist, Dr. Amy Wechsler.

1. METAL AWARENESS
If you’ve ever noticed an itchy, red rash on your earlobes, the nickel in your everyday earrings could be the culprit; nickel can cause flare-ups in people with metal allergies. Like other skin sensitivities, a nickel allergy can develop over the years, and you should know that this metal can also be found in bra clasps, jeans’ buttons, and costume jewelry.

What to do: You can ban the rash with a simple over-the-counter 1 percent hydrocortisone cream; stick to jewelry made from surgical steel or platinum (both metals are hypoallergenic); or use a nickel-detection kit to test accessories while you’re shopping. To be on the supersafe side, switch the metal hooks and buttons on your clothes for plastic or fabric-covered ones. Another good trick is to put clear nail polish or moleskin on the inside of your jeans’ buttons.

2. TIGHT SQUEEZE
Denim is a coarse fabric, and the current trend for thigh-hugging skinny jeans can make you sweat and chafe. That leads to clogged pores and ingrown hairs — or leg foliculitis. You’ll usually notice it on your thighs, but if you tuck your jeans into boots or forgo underwear, you can get breakouts mid-calf and in the bikini region, too.

What to do: Hydrate your legs regularly with a non-comedogenic exfoliating moisturizer (ingredients like alpha hydroxy acid are great), and always wear underwear. Use a salicylic acid spot treatment on new ingrowns, and see your dermatologist if they don’t heal in three days — she might need to drain them.

3. EXTRA BAGGAGE
Heavy, oversize purses or travel bags can rub your shirt or bra straps against your shoulders, leading to sweaty, warm patches that are ripe for breakouts.

What to do: If you have pimples on your upper back or shoulders, you should wash daily with a 10 percent benzoyl peroxide body wash. Opt for tops in breathable, natural fabrics, like cotton and silk, which ventilate better than synthetics; at the gym, wear moisture-wicking shirts to help stop sweat from clogging pores. If the breakouts continue, ask your derm for a prescription for Evoclin foam or an oral antibiotic like doxycycline. In-office treatments like Isolaz lasers and chemical peels can be done at higher intensities for body skin than facial skin and are good for more persistent breakouts, too. And remember to carry your bag on alternate sides: Too much neck and shoulder pressure can lead to long-term back problems. SOURCE

As I thought about it I really began to analyze the situation and I came up with this: there’s two types of women in this world: those that crave attention, and those that repulse it. The attention seekers make up the portion of women who actually do seek attention through their choice of clothing.

We know the woman that is not shy by any means, embraces her curves and has the, “God gave me this body, so why not show it off while I’ve still got it” mentality, do we not? These women generally don’t mind attention, and either openly receive the stares, gawks, honks, whistles and whatnot or fronts and repulses it yet brags about it amongst her friends. These women don’t only exist amongst your everyday associates, oh no. Celebrities seem to have increased this issue to the highest level of buffoonery possible. Don’t believe me? There are the Lady Gaga’s that walk the streets looking like this , the Amber Rose’s that do things like this, and even the Rihanna’s that purposely do things for the controversy factor. Personally, I feel like as long as you own a pair of breasts, you cannot tell me that you can remember to put on your $1200 dress, 20 carat diamonds and get your hair and make-up freshly done but forgot to wear a bra. Nope! You absolutely cannot tell me that, I refuse to believe it.

Now back to the matter at hand, if you are anything like me and tend to repulse the attention, it’s usually a rare condition where people will see you in second skin clothing, yeasty (a “creative” word for too tight) pants, underwear-less or in anything way over the top. Notice I said it’s rare, not never. You are the woman that finds it uncomfortable or disrespectful to be gawked at in such a way. You’re the woman screaming obscenities in your head when you hear, “Damn, baby! Is there any room in those jeans!” Let me make note that the fact that you find this uncomfortable and disrespectful does not mean you’re uncomfortable in skin, it just means you’d appreciate a simple compliment instead of an example of one.

In my quest for male feedback, I began questioning some of the males around the office and many of them said that they think it depends on the way a woman carries herself or the guy judging her. In other words, if she walks out of the house in next to nothing, popping her gum, switching just enough to knock a hip out of place and acting loud and belligerent, well maybe she is looking for it. But take a woman that carries herself in a classy manner that just so happens to wear something sexy yet subtle, she very well could’ve just wanted to feel sexy that day. No harm in that right?

I took to my Facebook page to pose this question and the feedback came as somewhat of a surprise to me after talking to the men around the office. The general response from the guys on Facebook, was that these women look for this attention. One even went as far as to call it a fact. Yes, a fact. Last time I checked, I thought a fact had to be proven, which in this case it clearly has not. I didn’t want to believe that grown men still thought this way but I figured maybe It’s just me. When I reflect on my small circle of friends I can point out some who clearly like the attention but front like they don’t, and there are some that generally do not look for attention through what they wear. To each his own, I’m just curious to hear your thoughts on the topic.

We can’t go right to the socks, right? Here are a few ways to slowly keep yourself up to date with the weather while still rocking your favorites from this summer:

Flats: This summer was all about the flip flops or going barefoot.  Open toed heels were the in thing and you could see people’s pedicures everywhere.  Autumn doesn’t mean that your feet need to be completely covered already! I have always been a big fan of flats: they cover your toes for those nights that are starting to get a little breezy.  They keep your toes dry when the rain starts coming back and puddles are around.  Rather than go straight to the socks, sneakers, and boots everyday, warm your feet up slowly by wearing around flats like a champ.

Scarves: Once the goosebumps start appearing, people reach for the baggy sweat shirts way too soon.  Warm yourself up with style and look into scarves.  I have started seeing the light scarves come out already and they have beautiful prints.  They are easy to wear and do the job of getting you ready for the colder weather.

Blazers: I have always been a promoter of blazers.  They are cute and do the job of keeping you warm.  Rather than go right for the bulky clothing to throw over your t-shirt in the next few months, get a few fitted blazers.  They go with anything and add style and sophistication to your outfit!

Tights: Don’t pack up those cute dresses that you bought this summer already! You can still rock them as the weather gets colder, just throw on something to keep your legs warm.  Tights have always been in, and they can help your body react to the temperature changes.  You can still keep it stylish by getting some fun panty hoes and incorporating them into your outfit.

“I wear really fun dresses with corset tops, tight waists and flowy and puffy bottoms, and some pencil skirts. We stuck with pastel colors and floral prints. I wear some pinks and powder blues. A lot of the clothes are vintage, although some pieces were created for me. I had four fittings in total.

It was so much fun getting dressed up. But the corsets! Wearing them requires a lot of sucking in, so it wasn’t very comfortable. I actually had lines on my skin from the impressions of one outfit. Once I was out of it, I could breathe again! I remember going home and thinking ‘how did women get through the day wearing those things?’ But by the second day it didn’t bother me. I felt like a pro!”

A good rule of thumb is, if you have not worn an item in a year, then get rid of it. If you went through all four seasons and it didn’t leave the house, then it’s unlikely you will wear it in the future.

Here are some tips from the folks over at shine.com:

1. Matching Hangers – Use matching hangers. They not only look better, but also take up less space. Huggable or slimline hangers are preferable, as they are thin; and even slippery items stay neatly in place.

2. Acquire Appropriate Storage Containers – You don’t always have to get rid of everything to de-clutter. By acquiring the appropriate storage containers, you can become more organized and save space. Try items like scarf and belt hangers, multi-item pant or skirt hangers, fabric boxes, or plastic storage containers. Reisenthal makes beautiful collapsible boxes that are great for storing things in your closet; and they can easily be left on display. Clear containers make it easy to see what’s inside. Keep everything as visible as possible; since out of sight means out of mind

3. Sort By Type – Hang clothes by item type and then by color. For example, group together all tanks tops, short-sleeve shirts, long-sleeve shirts, pants, skirts and so on. It’s also best to hang by length. Fold sweaters, jeans, and delicates.

4. Only Seasonable Items In Closet – If you have a small closet but have another storage area, it’s best to put the out of season items in a secondary location. If that is not an option, put the current season’s items in the most accessible area.

To date, the the most controversial outfit that Venus has ever worn was the one that she wore to the French Open this summer, the black negligee inspired dress looked like it came straight from the boudoir of Moulin Rouge and folks were clutching their pearls over that one.

This tip is especially important as it forces you to focus on the utility of an item, ie the usefulness of an item to you, rather than just the price. Paying $5 for something you never where is $5 wasted.

Ladies, when it comes to buying a bra, wearing the right bra size is just as important as choosing the right bra style. How long has it been since you’ve checked your bra size?

According to Susan Nethero, the “Bra Whisperer” and founder of {Intimacy} bra shops, and Karen Bromley, spokeswoman for the Intimate Apparel Council, the right bra doesn’t have to be so elusive. Follow these  10 rules of bra shopping to end your hunt for the perfect fit once and for all.

Rule #1: Know your measurements.

According to both Bromley and Nethero, the first thing a woman should do before buying a bra is get fitted, which entails getting measured directly under the bust and across the fullest part of the bust. Nethero says 85 percent of women are actually wearing the wrong size. “The biggest mistake is that most women don’t get fitted,” Bromley adds. “You buy a pair of shoes, you want them to fit comfortably—your bra fit is just as important.” And getting fitted once isn’t going to cut it—as your body weight changes, your bra size will too. Nethero recommends a “bra checkup” whenever a woman’s weight fluctuates by 10 percent, which often happens as a result of pregnancy, nursing, exercise, dietary changes, hormones, menopause, puberty and weight gain.

Rule #2: Your cups should be front and center.

Once you find out your real bra size (which can be shocking for some women) it’s important to find an undergarment that not only provides enough support, but also correctly positions your breasts. Nethero says, “When you are looking in the mirror, your bra should lift and center your bust midway between your shoulders and elbows, and your breasts should stay within your body’s frame. You don’t want to carry low and wide.” She says there should also be one inch of definition between your breasts.

Rule #3: The bra should fit firmly around your frame.

Women often associate looseness with comfort, but bras should always have a snug fit. A brassiere gets 90 percent of its stability from the band being firm and level around the body. If your bra is too loose, it will shift up the back and cause every component that’s supposed to provide support to be unstable. Nethero’s advice: “The bra should be tight enough that you can fit only two fingers under the band. The back of the bra should be level with or lower than the front. You want it to be stable as you move throughout the day.”

Rule #4: Account for stretching.

Most bras are made of flexible materials, like Lycra and spandex. Over time, with normal wear, they will eventually stretch out. Nethero recommends buying a bra that fits best when it’s latched at the widest possible position, to account for the inevitable give in the fabric. “It should be on the last hook, so as the bra stretches, you can tighten it,” she says.

The truth is that some things have an expiration date. Clothes included. I encourage people to dress age appropriately. What fit your level of development at 25 is not going to fit your level of development at 55.  Just like at some point young men must learn to move on from the casual white tee and jeans, a young woman must also know when it is time to retire her favorite pair of booty shorts. Also, it is important to know when you have matured past a look.  Once you hit a certain age, certain clothing is simply not acceptable for you to wear in public. You may think that you are sexy but in actually you appear to be foolish and diluted from reality. Just as you grow and mature internally your outer appearance should reflect that change and growth as well.  People expect for you to understand the maturation process and accept it. Now, the direction of this growth is on an individual basis but it is something that everyone must go through and learn to accept. No matter how good you think those daisy dukes make your 66 years old booty look. Should Granny be forced to wear dresses down to her ankles and big sweaters in the summer time to assure that she is covered up? No. She can still be sexy but age appropriate sexy.

There are 7 major trends in colors for the Autumn 2009/Winter 2010 season.

1. Black and White: Almost every designer had at least one black and white piece, with many doing a majority of their collections revolving around the theme.

2. Grey: This was also seen a lot on the runway, varying shades ads variety to this  basic color.

3. Red: This was one of the few colors that added some punch on the runway. Sometimes whole outfits were done in red, otherwise it was used as an accent.

4. Purple: This was mostly used by itself. Designers played with different shades in one outfit to create some contrast.

5. Earth Tones: This trend has stuck around from last Autumn/Winter season and was the focus of some designers lines. It was also used as an alternative to white in some instances by using a cream or off-white rather than basic white.

6. Brights/Neons: Often times paired with basic black, neon made an appearance on the runway, too. This went along with the very 80′s inspired pieces that were seen from the clothing, also.

7. Metallic: Sequins, beading, and all over silver and gold were quite popular at the shows. Entire outfits were done in sequins, while some had only slight sequin accents.

The goals of the event were to get people more conscious of plus size women and the struggles they have shopping. Also, the event was a wake-up call for clothing producers to see the type of audience they are missing.

This is much needed as the size of a fashion model is shrinking along with the patience of many full figured women. I would argue many people couldn’t name 5 plus size models, but could easily name five non-plus ones. We know the queen of fashion, Anna Wintour, isn’t too happy about this recent development, based on her statement that “I had just been on a trip to Minnesota where I can only kindly describe most of the people that I saw as little houses, and I just felt like there’s such an epidemic of obesity in the United States. And for some reason everyone focuses on anorexia … We need to spend money, time, and education on teaching people to eat , exercise, and take care of themselves in a healthier way.”

The past 10 years has seen major improvement in this area. Now there are at least select brands that produce some very cute clothes for big, beautiful women, however it is not surprising for a full figured woman to have to shop online or search weeks before finding a great outfit. These women should be able to spend a day shopping where she doesn’t have to sit behind a computer screen and stare at pictures. Maybe this will be the breakthrough for plus size fashion.

Here is our Top 10 Michael Jackson Outfits from last night:

10. Soulja Boy’s Michael Jackson shirt on the red carpet - Overall the shirt was great, however it was the sagging pants that made this one the bottom of the list.

9. Carmelo Anthony’s Michael Jackson shirt- It was simple and captured one of Michael Jackson’s signature dance moves.

8. Monica’s Michael Jackson inspired jacket- It was an obvious tribute to MJ’s style, but there were other performers who hit it more dead on to his style.

7. Jamie Foxx’s white v-neck- A great screen print, keeping it real with a picture of MJ. The lines are a little distracting, however.

6. Ciara’s sequined jacket- This was a much closer imitation of MJ’s style, however a little off still.

5. T-Pain’s t-shirt- The sequins set this one above all the rest to win best T-shirt of Michael Jackson at the BET Awards show.

4. Audience Member’s Jacket- This jacket stole the show with clothing which referenced MJ. The bright color and MJ inspired look puts it above the rest.

3. New Edition’s vintage Michael outfit- One of the few outfits to keep it vintage, so naturally it got high marks.

2. Keri Hilson’s Michael Jackson look-alike- This one might have won standing alone, the jacket, tight pants rolled up, the socks, shoes, the whole thing looks very similar to MJ’s style, however we have to give credit to…

1. Jamie Foxx’s Beat It Tribute Outfit- The inclusion of the glove put it above the rest. That is just classic Michael Jackson style.

UNTIL recently the words “American” and “optimism” would scarcely be uttered in the same sentence but, like the African American President who the media are so keen to compare him to, Gap’s creative director Patrick Robinson epitomises both. Stephen Jones, Katie Grand – and the assembled media of London – watched as he presented the brand’s autumn/winter 2009-10 collection in London last night – and the designer was in positive mood.

“I just wanted to create a collection of great items,” Robinson told VOGUE.COM – following a company restructure which has moved the emphasis from individual product categories to integrated outfit building. “That’s what Gap is about. Classic pieces you can make your own in a range of colours. Gap doesn’t translate the catwalk trends on to the high street – we’re not about trends, but classics.”

A base of great denim; light, dark, casual, tailored, skinny or boyfriend baggy, provides the foundation for more fashion forward pieces – from a sleeveless leather jacket to a colourful chunky Navajo cardigan. There are stand-out individual items, but the overwhelming impression is of a man who knows how to give good outfit.

Supermodel Liya Kebede is not only to be the first model to pose as the exclusive face of J. Crew (that is, she’s agreed to pose for the entire catalog), the brand has also agreed to pick up her children’s clothing line, Lemlem.

Lemlem, which means “to bloom,” was launched by Kebede in 2007 and every piece is handmade in her native Ethiopia with natural cotton. The line will be available at J.Crew starting in April.
