Should all celebrities get special treatment?

In the last few weeks, there have been several airport scares – the “underwear” bomber on Flight 253 from Amsterdam to Detroit on Christmas Day, the man who trespassed a security cordon without permission in Newark, etc.

These men – one harmful, the other not so much – caused headaches and worry throughout the nation.  However, Halle Berry runs late and she is allowed to bypass the security checkpoint at a Montreal airport without so much as a signature to prove her identity.

“The (boyfriend) of Ms. Berry asked if they could go faster through the line because they were late and they had the baby,” said Insp. Jimmy Cacchione.

Now, I’m not saying Halle Berry is a threat – unless, of course, she’s on the road – but who’s to say that her exemption didn’t make other passengers uncomfortable? Not only were they blatantly treated as second-rate citizens, as they received no special treatment and were reminded of their sad non-celeb status, but they got to see first-hand, right before their eyes, a breach of security – at what could not be a worse time. And all because of a personal preference and request?

Marieve Paradis said she spotted the family bypassing the lengthy lineup while other passengers waited for hours to get to U.S. Customs. “I’m not sure people are very happy to learn that their tax money is used for escorting celebrities.” She barely made the morning flight herself after arriving three and a half hours ahead of departure as a result of the recently-heightened security checks.

I’m sure Ms. Berry is not the first person to have been running late, carrying a child, or become frustrated with customs in an airport, but in a time where terror alerts are high, should she have been detained like the rest of us? (At the very least, to put us at ease?) Or did she deserve the special treatment?

FAME…I Wanna Live Forever!

I know you will be humming that Fame song for the rest of the day. (Don’t you just hate when I do that?) LOL! The song is so perfect for today’s topic.

So what, they are not on the cover of Giant, Vanity Fair, Cosmo, or Essence. They might not have the paparazzi hiding behind their bathroom door trying to get that million dollar nudie shot, but they are still stars in the eyes of many!

I’m talking about the phenomenon of the local celebrity. The little guy who still shines brighter than the Average Joe. There is something that draws us to these people. It’ s their passion, their personalities, it’ s what they do. The local celebrity could be a financial expert, doctor, politician, motivational speaker, pastor, or business guru. What is it that gives him or her that star quality? And is it possible for you to attain that magical twinkle in your eye as well?

Well, today you’ll learn you don’t have to dance on top of cars to get the attention you deserve. (It’s okay, show your age, for those of you who remember the Fame Movie!)

1. Know your target market and have them feel comfortable with you! Understand what they need and want so that you can give it to them and THEN some. Having a “story” is extremely important as well, in many cases people want to identify with you. Maybe you accomplished something they are trying to and you are their inspiration. Tell them about it. Don’ t be shy. If you were in an abusive relationship, WRITE ABOUT IT, talk about it.

If you just overcame a serious illness and found ways to overcome it by changing your diet, SHARE IT! If you were in debt and now you’re a big BALLER, tell ‘em how you got there! FIND THEIR PROBLEM AND HELP THEM SOLVE IT! We love information– heck you’ re getting some right now aren’t ya?

2. Do Something that Counts!

Being fabulous is cute, but what are you doing for your community that makes people remember you? Host an event, volunteer; speak on topics that will uplift those in your area.

3. Continue to Build Up Your Fan Base

Collect contact info like it’s nobodies business. Every event that you have or attend, you should be collecting names, e-mails, and mailing addresses. Don’t walk away missing out on potentially new clients, customers, followers, fans, etc.

For those in the music industry for example, I can’t tell you how many times I’ve been to a show and then realized they didn’t even have anyone collecting email addresses or business cards. It’s a wasted opportunity! You need to stay in contact with these folks who could later come to another show and buy your CD or MP3s online!

4. Get out the house and WORK THAT ROOM BABY!

Learn how to find interesting networking events online. Go where your target market is, not necessarily where your peers are. Read this article titled Work That Room, Baby for more info and simple tips to make networking easier for you.

5. Do local cable, TV, or even get your own Internet Radio Show. Start researching cable access shows in your area by calling your local cable company. Cable is very inexpensive and many folks are shocked when they find out the rates!

6. Have Authentic Personal Style

Becoming a local celebrity is a lot easier than you may think! Having star quality is more a matter of over-all impression than actual looks so having a knockout first impression is one giant step to stardom. What message is your image sending? Before you even open your mouth, you need to have a positive and memorable impact on people. Having authentic personal style can give you the clout to open doors to places that would otherwise remain locked or take years to enter. It’s amazing how charm, grace, and confidence can get you to the front of the line. You don’t have to be rich or wear expensive clothes. It’s all in how you work it! That’s star quality.

7. Keep yourself in front of people!

Speak at events, participate in fund raising, go to networking events, get cards printed and hand them out and make sure to take advantage of photo ops and auditions. There’s no room for fear! Get known for being the professional and wonderful person that you are. It’s a hard fact that even if someone is really interested in you, they will rarely call you back. You must keep on top of your contacts and constantly develop new ones, focusing on those that will help you get to where you want to go. The most important advice is to be kind to everyone on your way up, from the receptionists to the doormen to the assistants, because you never know who you’ll meet on the way down!

8. Remember, anyone can develop a signature style.

It takes time and it takes courage, but it can be done. Finding yourself as a person has a lot to do with finding your personal style as the whole process is to basically bring the inward outward. It’s not enough to get a makeover when the old attitudes are still attached. It’s like putting fresh icing on a stale cake. If you’re going through a major transition in your life and exploring new options, you’re feeling lost and confused or just plain bored, it helps to have a coach on hand to help direct you to your goals and the image to go along with them.

Gossip isn’t all bad
Swapping salacious stories can be thrilling, but can also leave behind a guilty conscience. But what if some of your rumor remorse could be alleviated? Recent studies suggest that under certain circumstances, gossip can be beneficial – even healthy. And while this research doesn’t necessarily excuse spreading the sordid details of a friend’s love life, it does ease a bit of the shame that accompanies a Perez Hilton addiction.

Gossip defined
The very notion of gossip can be tricky to define. How does a snarky comment about a coworker compare to a random celebrity-centered rant? In a recent issue of Scientific American Mind, Professor Frank T. McAndrew offered this widely accepted definition: “the practice [of gossip] involves talk about people who are not present and this talk is relaxed, informal and entertaining. Typically, the topic of conversation also concerns information that we can make moral judgments about.”

Gossip actually a sign of evolution
Why exactly do all humans seem to have such a lust for gossip? Blame it on our ancestors. According to McAndrew, our predecessors lived in intimate groups in which members had to rely on each other, but also engage in competition for limited resources. Those who had the savvy to gather information about their fellow group members achieved more success and passed their knowledge-seeking genes on to subsequent generations. Hence, our desire to get the scoop on friends, colleagues and enemies may be innate.

Gossip ironically is moralistic in nature
McAndrew, along with other researchers believes that when controlled, gossip can be a major asset to humans. Individuals not only forge bonds by sharing information, but they effectively maintain the norms and tenets of their group culture. When one person is the target of gossip, the group quickly identifies him or her as a violator of its standards. After all, by McAndrew’s definition, gossip is usually characterized by information we can evaluate on a moral level. So by outing those who defy social ethics, the group as a whole can prosper and thrive.

When gossip isn’t good
So does this mean distributing photocopies of your rival’s diary is a clever way to climb the social ladder? Not exactly. Because our modern society no longer deals with the perils of prehistoric civilization, today’s information grapevine can be quite damaging. Although we no longer rely on the primitive functions of gossip to inform and protect our social groups, we continue to engage in it. In his article, McAndrew asserts that “in its rawest form [gossip] is a strategy used by individuals to further their own reputations and selfish interests at the expense of others.”

Wearing a dramatic pair of falsies is a great addition to your favorite party outfit, but if you can’t apply them correctly, they can make you look like a hot mess! To get you prepped for your next big night, we got in touch with eyelash guru Ja’Maal Buster, who has applied amazing lashes on almost every star from Rihanna to Fergie, for a few tips on keeping a sexy eye from becoming an evil one.

Your lashes depend on your personal style – not the other way around
“There are lashes that last for months, and some that last for days, but you have to pick a kind of lash that works for you,” advises Buster. So if you’re just going to the store, it’s probably not the best idea to walk around with stage eyes. Here are a few types of lashes Buster offers:

• Soiree Lashes: Individual, flare, or strip lashes, which are offered in black or brown human hair. Also can be used along with feathers, beads and jewels. Can be used for a natural or dramatic enhancement. Clear adhesive can be used for an invisible hold or black to give an illusion of an eyeliner. Lasts 2 days.

• Fab-Lashes: Like the Soiree set, these can be used in a number of ways, but they last for two weeks

• Bio-Lashes: One of the most technology-advanced lashes in the market today, this procedure consists of single silk lash that are applied to the client’s own individual lash with medical-grade adhesive. The lashes come in various lengths, which are offered in black or brown. The adhesive offers an invisible hold. Touch-ups are approximately 3-6 weeks. Lasts 2 months.

Not all glues are created equal.
“The type of glue you use really depends on the look you’re going for,” says Ja’Maal. “If it’s natural, then clear glue will offer an invisible hold; black glue will give you the look of wearing black eyeliner. There are also kinds of glues that offer a longer holding time – some for days, others for weeks.”

• Debu Waterproof Adhesive, $3, drugstores
• shu uemura eyelash adhesive, $8.50, nordstrom.com
• I Love My Lashes lash adhesive, $25.95, ilovemylashes.com

You don’t have to leave your makeup on for days to keep your luscious lashes.
To wash your face without sacrificing your falsies, Buster advises clients to remove makeup gently with a q tip or cotton pad, and make sure to use a remover that isn’t oil-based – otherwise, the glue on your lashes will come off with your makeup. Try using Cetaphil cleansers, which are great for sensitive skin AND delicate lashes.

Your lashes aren’t life-long.
Eventually, you’ll have to part with your favorites and get a new pair. If they’re cleaned right after each use, Ja’Maal says, you can wear strip lashes only 3 or 4 times before it’s time to give them the boot.

Don’t give yourself spider eyes!
“I like to use mascara after application to help the false lashes blend better with your real ones,” says Buster. “If you use it before, your lashes might be too stiff.”

APPLYING STRIP LASHES: A STEP-BY-STEP GUIDE

1. Carefully remove your lashes from the container by using tweezers and pulling them at the base.
2. Size your lashes by holding them to your eye to see if you need to make them shorter. If needed, trim the outer edge of the lashes with small scissors.
3. Using your lash adhesive, apply a small amount along the bottom rim of the false lashes. Take your time so as not to get any glue on the lashes themselves.
4. Allow your lashes to sit for 30-60 seconds until the glue is tacky. While you are waiting, hold the lashes in a U shape to help them form to the shape of your eyes.
5. Once the glue has set a bit and is tacky, hold the lashes with the tweezers or your fingers and aim downward.
6. Look down slightly and place the middle of the lashes very close to your natural lashline. Be very careful not to place ON your lashes, but on the lid right next to your lashes.
7. Using the end of the tweezers, press down the outer edges of the lashes until they stick to the lid. If needed, continue to press the entire rim of the false lashes until they are on tightly.
8. Allow the lashes to sit for a minute (start on the other eye while you wait)
9. Apply your mascara.

REMOVING YOUR LASHES: A STEP-BY-STEP GUIDE

1. Never remove it by tugging. Chances are, you might pull off some of your real lashes as well, and this can become very tragic! Go gentle on those fake eyelashes and handle them as though they could be real.
2. Start by dabbing fake eyelash remover on your lash line with a cotton swab. You can gently tap the swab at the base in order to loosen the eyelash glue. Start applying from the outer edge-inward. You may use some oil-based eye-makeup remover as an alternative. It would also be good to let it soak for a few seconds in order to soften the adhesive glue. (Do not leave it out too long as it will dry out eventually.)
3. After making sure that it has fully softened, take one corner of the lash band (for full fake eyelashes) and gently pull off the eye lashes. For individual fake eye lashes, it is best to use a good pair of tweezers for more precision when pulling.
4. Remove all possible traces of eyelash glue by dabbing some more eyelash remover. Finally, cleanse your eyes and the rest of your makeup with a good make up remover.

Hang Mioku began her plastic surgery journey at the age of 28 and now at 48 she has completely disfigured her face. Some of the risky procedures Mioku took underwent were silicone injections into her face. The doctor who administered the injections even gave her a supply of silicone to inject at home. When the silicone ran out Mioku began injecting her face with cooking oil.
