As the list of hosts rolled out for BET’s 2011 Notarized video countdown show rolled out, we were excited to see rapper and radio personality Shorty Da Prince and the “Fly Girl” Paigion of Detroit’s HOT 107.5 hosting the countdown show for 2011.

“Notarized” is the biggest music video countdown show of the year! Watch it New Year’s Eve starting at 11A/10C only on BET!

The pair will also host BET’s 106 & Park along side Terrence and Rocsi next week separately. Paigion will co-host BET 106 & Park on  December 29, while Shorty Da Prince will co-host December 28!

Originally taped October 15 in the Bronx, NY, “Black Girls Rock” introduced us to songstress Elle Varner and featured performances from legends such as Mary Mary, Mary j Blige, Estelle many more.

Here is a list of the top five moments from last night’s “Black Girls Rock”.

1. Erykah Badu’s opening performance of “Appletree”. She absolutely ROCKED IT! Everything was on point: her vocals, her outfit, her beatboxing, her live band… EVERYTHING! I’ve probably watched it about 5 times since the show first aired! In case you missed it, check it out right here!

2. Angela Davis’ acceptance speech. She is truly an “icon” and definitely deserved to win the BGR “Icon” Award. Her speech was so amazing because not only did she accept the award on behalf of herself, but on behalf of all black girls who are making a difference in the community and who.. well.. rock! She also touched on how the prison system has affected our communities and looking for ways to improve education, health care, jobs and freedom. She’s awesome!

3. Taraji P Henson’s “star power” award acceptance speech. With tears in her eyes, Taraji gave a heart warming speech as she accepted her “star power” award. She stated, “If I never walk away with another award, this one means more to me than anything!” That comment right there was enough to bring tears to my eyes! She touched on the importance of black women supporting each other and bring each other up! Taraji, you certainly do rock!

4. Ruby Bridges telling us why she rocks! I’m sure everyone has read about Ruby Bridges during Black History Month, but to hear her tell her story on television was mind-blowing. As one of the first African Americans to integrate the public school system in the 60s, she is such an inspiration to us all. Her bravery was unlike any other and she paved the way for so many of us to receive the education that we have today. Thank you Ruby!

5. The show closed with a salute to the honorees from Tracee Ellis Ross and Regina King as well as the closing performance from my girl, Mary J Blige. I think this moment really summed up the night, and showed everyone exactly why Black girls rock. Closing the show with Mary gave us a feeling of excitement, and sealed the deal on our achievements! But how would you recommend that she grow her business? I think, first of all, Oprah really needs to stick to what she really believes in doing. She should never go off that path. And I think a few times she has done that, and it’s cost her her ratings. The only advice that I say, let’s open up your circle a little bit more. You know, we love the Dr. Phils. We love the Suze Ormans. Let’s open up. There are other people. And there’s also African-American experts out there that I think she should start bringing on her show that can reach even a wider audience.

And it’s true that there doesn’t appear to be a great deal of ethnic diversity in her programming at this point, which is puzzling to some people. No. Yes. And I think she really should do that and not be afraid to do it. There’s really a lot of great experts out there that really know the businesses at hand. And I’d like to see her open up her circle to do that.

My Mic Sounds Nice Premieres Monday, August 30th on BET.

To a standing room only audience, featuring both stars and top executives from the black music world including Sylvia Rhone, President of Motown Records and EVP of Universal Music, Debra Lee, President & CEO of BET Networks, and Yo-Yo, BET Networks premiered its first original music documentary special, My Mic Sounds Nice: A Truth About Women and Hip Hop, produced and directed by acclaimed young filmmaker Ava DuVernay.

The documentary will give an inside look at how women have affected rap music, and in turn how rap music affects female MCs of past and present.

Artists such as MC Lyte, Missy Elliott, and Queen Latifah contributed significantly to the shaping of hip hop music, bringing new sounds to the record labels. With the emergence of a younger generation of women in hip-hop including Nicki Minaj and Diamond, My Mic Sounds Nice: A Truth About Women and Hip Hop will serve as a commentary for how hip hop music is influenced by women and vice versa.

This artistically-shot documentary, using full-camera portraits and interviews of some of the greatest women to ever hold a mic, examines gender-specific differences in artistry, marketing, promotion and economics, and explores why there are far fewer female than male MCs.  DuVernay, whose debut documentary, This Is The Life, won numerous audience awards and premiered on Showtime in May 2009, asks whether there’s still a place for women in hip-hop.  The answer may surprise you.

My Mic Sounds Nice: A Truth About Women and Hip Hop features revealing interviews with journalists, executives, and rappers, including Missy Elliott, EVE, Trina, Rah Digga, MC Lyte, Yo Yo, Questlove, along with hip-hop moguls Jermaine Dupri, Russell Simmons, Kevin Liles and many more.

Tracee Ellis Ross will be return­ing to TV with Reed Between The Lines, a new half-hour com­edy green-lit by BET. In the new show, Ross plays Dr. Carla Reed, a busy psy­chi­a­trist, wife, and mother, who’s strug­gling to bal­ance career and family.

Ross will also pro­duce, along­side Arthur Har­ris and Kel­lie Grif­fin, the for­mer head-writer for Tyler Perry’s House of Payne.

Reed Between The Lines con­tin­ues BET’s re-entry into the orig­i­nal scripted series arena along­side The Queen Lat­i­fah pro­duced Let’s Stay Together and rein­car­nated Girl­friends’ spin-off The Game. Pro­duc­tion on the pilot is slated to start in Atlanta on August 11th.

Girl­friends, Ross’ last TV series, was can­celled two years ago after an 8 sea­son run on UPN and then The CW. She can next be seen in the Off-Broadway Play, “Love Loss and What I Wore,” writ­ten by Nora and Delia Ephron, as part of the rotat­ing cast along­side Rosie O’Donnell, Sherri Shep­herd, Jane Lynch, Brooke Shields, and a slew of others.

The 2010 BET nominations have been announced and while Jay-Z is ahead of the pack, leading with 5 nods (Jay-Z Is A Wife Beater On BET), Monica is the artist that has got everyone talking.

The lack of recognition made by BET’s head honchos to Monica and her recent overwhelming success has sparked a Twitter outrage.

Although BET included Monica’s name in the category for “Viewers Choice Award” and something called a “Centric Award,” we expected more for an artist who returned from a hiatus with a #1 album (“Still Standing” claimed the spot only a week after it’s release) and her very own, well-received reality show.

Monica Switches 2nd Single To “Love All Over Me”

Although fans were already skeptical about BET being the only network that had not premiered Ciara’s “Ride” video, it was not until last night that fans were TRULY enlightened. During Ciara’s Ustream chat, Ciara’s grandma, Grandma Gladys, let a “cat out of the bag”. Ironically, though many “non-family friendly” music videos have been shown on the channel in the past, “Ride” has not been accepted onto the network.

This will be the second video by Ciara that BET has banned. Last year in September the network announced they would no longer play “Love, Sex, Magic” featuring Justin Timberlake because of the exposed butt cheeks, splits and ear licking.

Why is this video any different that the scandalous ones the channel airs?

VIDEO: Ciara To Show “Sensual, Cocky” Side On New Album

Sheila Johnson, the co-founder of Black Entertainment Television alongside her ex-husband Bob Johnson, was asked by The Daily Beast blog what she thought about her groundbreaking network since selling it to Viacom in 2000 for $1.3 billion.

Says the 60-year-old Johnson, who has since divorced and remarried (charmingly enough, to the Virginia circuit court judge who presided over her divorce),

“Don’t even get me started. I don’t watch it. I suggest to my kids that they don’t watch it… I’m ashamed of it, if you want to know the truth.”

Johnson was being interviewed at the Tribeca Film Festival about the premiere of “The Other City,” a searing, but ultimately hopeful documentary she produced about the AIDS epidemic in Washington, D.C. — an epidemic Johnson says BET is making worse, and potentially contributing to its spread, by promoting promiscuous, unprotected sex in raunchy videos.

“When we started BET, it was going to be the Ebony magazine on television. We had public affairs programming. We had news… I had a show called Teen Summit, we had a large variety of programming, but the problem is that then the video revolution started up… And then something started happening, and I didn’t like it at all. And I remember during those days we would sit up and watch these videos and decide which ones were going on and which ones were not. We got a lot of backlash from recording artists…and we had to start showing them. I didn’t like the way women were being portrayed in these videos.”

Johnson says she has absolutely nothing to do with BET these days.

“I just really wish—and not just BET but a lot of television programming—that they would stop lowering the bar so far just so they can get eyeballs to the screen. I know they think that’s what’s going to keep programming on the air; that’s what’s going to sell advertising. But there has got to be some responsibility. Somebody has got to take this over. Because with all the studies that are out there, this is contributing to an atmosphere of free sex, ‘I don’t have to protect myself anymore.’”

TheYBF is reporting that they received a letter from Teairra Mari’s Fo Reel Entertainment label stating that BET has banned her and Soulja Boy’s video for “Sponsor.”

Apparently, BET has deemed the video detrimental to young women because it “teaches” them to get paid for sex/relations with men. But, Teairra’s people say this is a blatant double standard in the industry.

I was informed that 106 and Park, a source for African Americans to promote their music, have banned Teairra Mari’s song Sponsor and other projects from surfacing on their channel. No one else will report because they don’t want to put it on blast. I feel bad for the underdogs because they are not given a fair chance and its even worse when your own kind won’t promote you. What’s bad about Sponsor that overshadows any work that Lil Wayne, Ludacris, and many others have showcased on BET? Why is it, do you think, that booty shaking and such is allowed but a video by a woman encouraging others to make it is bad. Why is it that Lil Wayne can perform “Every Girl In the World” with his daughter on stage, but women artists have to be “appropriate”. I understand if they would at least let Teairra come on the show to explain the concept behind the song. It just seems like a shady business where people who have made it have certain control over those that haven’t through shady connections.

I know people may say “well who checkin’ for…” but what if these people actually had a chance in the business if it wasn’t so shady?

Funny thing is, Teairra Mari just answered this question for Rap-Up:

What do you have to say to those who think “Sponsor” glorifies gold diggers?
Well, the video was my response. But in words, my response is that a “sponsor” is whoever is dishing your money out. For some people, that could be their man, their sugar daddy, whatever you want to call it. For some people it may be their woman, their sugar mama. For some people it may be their job, their parents. Whoever you’re getting supported by, that’s your “sponsor.” Mine is Warner Bros. [Records]. It’s not a gold digger thing. But gold diggers I’m sure will love [the song]. The way the song is written, it’s very sarcastic. So it’s like he must be a baller, doctor, rapper, I don’t even care, just as long as he don’t say bye. It’s just really fun.

BET VJ Rosci recently sat down with honeymag.com to discuss the rumor mill, cyber attacks, dealing with anorexia and how she’s learned to deal with it all.

Here are some excerpts:

On the cyber attacks

“I think a lot of these Web sites need a story. They need to find somebody to pick on, and I just so happen to be one of those girls. I’ve always had that coming up against Free on a black network and not being black.”

“With men in my life, I’ve always made good choices. I would love to think that. It’s just really hard to trust people, and that’s just coming from not knowing everybody’s intentions,” Rocsi says.

“It hurts when my brothers call me,” Rocsi says. “I mean it’s real bad when it gets to the point where everything’s so unbearable. You really got to have that strength, because if I didn’t have that strength in me, I would kill myself. There are some days when I’m like ‘How bad do I want to kill myself right now? What is the point of going on when so many people despise me or hate what I do?’”

“I got where I’m at because of my work,” Rocsi insists. “I never had to lay on my back to get where I was. I come from a Latino background where family and the way we were brought up was very important. That’s how we conducted ourselves as ladies. And that’s a very important thing to my family, so yeah, when these blogs come out and they start talking shit – you’re messing with what my parents instilled in me. And I know it isn’t true. But I’m glad I have great family members who know that I wasn’t brought up that way, to not be blinded by this industry.”

“You’re never really cured, because sometimes you have to psych yourself up that you’re eating healthy, you’re at a healthy weight. As women you have those fat days, but in my mind, those days are a little too frequent,” Rocsi says. “To this day, when somebody calls me thick, that’s not a compliment to me. Don’t call me thick. I hate that. I think thick is fat. I used to think that if I had curves or stomach flab that meant I was fat. I used to go over 110 lbs, I would think ‘I’m fat.’ If I see on a scale 118 [lbs.], I would start starving myself to get myself down to what I need to be at.”

It’s not all about weight, though. The ridicule celebrities receive does not go unnoticed. “That’s why I give Solange props for cutting all her hair off,” she says. “I wish I could do that. My ears are too big, though.”

On her future

“I would love to do film and [be] casted … in a dramatic role. I just want to be great at [acting]. Until then, I love my job and there’s nothing in the world that would bring me to leave 106th. I think we’re getting bigger and badder and there’s no point in me leaving right now. But I could dab,” Rocsi says. “Acting is my therapy. I could be somebody else and if I want to cry, I can cry, if I want to scream out … because if Rocsi does it, Rocsi looks crazy.”

It’s officially a go!

According to Sister 2 Sister Magazine,  guest star Drew Sidora briefly spoke up about BET getting the green light on, “The Game”:

“While speaking with Drew Sidora earlier this week, the singer-actress dished some great news for fans of “The Game.”

“The show is getting picked up, so for people that have been petitioning and wondering, it is coming back to BET. So, hopefully, you will see me back,” Drew told S2S exclusively. “It is official. The deal has been done.”

Buzz of a partnership between show creator BET and CBS TV that would reincarnate the once-cancelled sitcom began spreading in June. Last anyone heard, the network said it was close to a deal, but nothing was final.

This news comes with the catch that production on another season of “The Game” hasn’t started just yet. And we heard that she show might actually be taping in Atlanta now.

“Right now, they’re just trying to figure out when it’s going to actually come back, as far as when we start filming the new episodes and things like that,” said Drew. “But BET has picked it up.”

“The Game” has always had a wonderfully loyal fan base, and those who tried to convince the CW to keep it had a big hand in its resurrection.

“Everybody that petitioned-believe it or not-about the show getting cancelled, that is really what ultimately had BET even looking to pick it up,” she explained. “It was really dope. Everybody really loves the show and supports the show, so all I can say is keep watching.”

But with the show is headed to a new home field does that mean all of the original cast will be coming along with it?

“I can’t say that for sure, but you will probably see a lot of the characters back,” Drew dished. She’s hoping to get a recurring spot on the show, reprising the self-named role of Drew Sidora. The big question there will be, if she does return, what does that mean for Derwin Davis and his new bride Melanie?

“Just bring people up to date with that because it was never resolved. It was something we always to bring back; it was all about the great timing of it,” Drew said. “I think now people are going to want to see what happens with Mel and I. You know, you might see us out somewhere. And the same with Derwin.”

In case you missed the premiere of Mo’Nique’s show on BET last night, we got you covered!!! Singer and upcoming reality actress Monica made an appearance.  The singer spoke about her upcoming reality show “Still Standing”. When asked if her music would be different because of the effect her ex-boyfriends had on her versus the man she is with now, she replied:

It’s way different. I love being in love but I also like being loved right because I’ve seen both ways. The wrong way and the right way so I can appreciate him for being loved the right way and loving me the right way. But I have not forgotten the others so the album does reflect on them. It does talk specifically about them. It’s not so much “So Gone” kick down the door, slap the chick, as it use to be but I do encourage my women to stand up for themselves. Go Hard or go Home”

After the overwhelming success of the first season, Tiny & Toya’s BET reality show has been green lighted for a second season and cameras will follow Tiny’s group the OMG Girlz and the eventual release of Tiny’s man T.I. from prison at the end of this year or the beginning of next year.
