“The label I was with kinda fell under an indictment and that actually put a hold on everything. It was like a black cloud that I had to kinda come out of and we had to do a lot of damage control. I wanted to distance myself from that. I did Broadway, I did some films –I did ‘John Tucker Must Die, ‘Resident Evil’ and I had to regroup and say, “Okay, we’re going to have a fresh start and I’m going to try and put my business hat on and try and look for an different angle to try and approach music because it felt like the industry was changing dramatically in those past three years.” We know music, it changes, and three years is a long time.”

Ashanti dealt with label woes when she was released from Murder, Inc. in 2009 when label owner Irv Gotti decided that their relationship had run its course. It only took a few months for Ashanti to announce she got her own label – Written Entertainment – which is where she will release her latest album. Ashanti understands the importance of ownership in being a businesswoman and through her new label, she’s working with eOne Music as a worldwide distributor.

2. She Knows Hits

Ashanti broke records with her eponymous debut album. Selling over 500,000 copies within the first week back in 2002 was a feat that even Lauryn Hill and Alicia Keys couldn’t accomplish. As of last year, Ashanti has sold over 30 million records worldwide.

3. She Gives Back

Not limited to making hits, Ashanti uses her power and influence for good. She’s been named the National Youth Of The Year Ambassador for the Boys & Girls Club of America. As an alumna of the Glen Cove (N.Y.) Boys & Girls Club, where her mother Tina Douglas taught dance, Ashanti performed for the very first time on the Club’s stage–so being an ambassador brings her life and career full circle. There’s a richness in being able to wholeheartedly do for others.

I saw this tweet from Lebron James’ girlfriend Savannah and it made me wonder why do women stay with men who just won’t commit?

Here are some famous couples that have been boo’d up, shacked up, have kids and never made it official:

“I’m nice, I’m the peacemaker, I’m the positive one but I don’t like the beef thing, I think it takes up too much of your energy. You block your blessing when you’re negative and you’re mean. It’s not worth it.”

When asked on why she’s been missing from the scene she also added,

“Well, I think it’s a combination of the industry changing as a whole. I think it’s about being happy, knowing what you want and how to accomplish it. Dealing with execs and the way things change in the labels is really something you have to adapt to because it’s a lot of things that are beyond your control. So in order to get that control back you have to kind of sit for a minute, sort it out and know what you’re doing and have an amazing team.”

While I used to go through the motions about liking Ashanti and not liking Ashanti, I never could deny the fact that she is a very beautiful and talented woman. I loved her first album, I used to swear it was the hottest R&B album of that year (2003) and she’s honestly beginning to grow on me, I’m interested in seeing the projects she has coming up in the future. **Warning** Video contains extreme laughter!

A rare cut off Skillz 2005 “Confessions of A Ghostwriter” album. Skillz manage to be lyrical and deeply express the love he has for his mother who has passed away. Get a good listen now because this track is one that is not all over the net.

9. Nas- Dance

Nas remembers his mother on the God’s Son album track. Many children seem to keep the memory of dancing with their mom or dad. Nas wish he could have had just one more dance with his mom.

8. Musiq- MotherFather

Musiq express how thankful he is for all Motherfather has done for him. In his own classic style he expresses the lesson he learned growing up. I think many parents want to hear that their child has learned from them.

7. Ashanti- Mother

I’m sure Ashanti had no problem expressing her feelings through music for her mom since she has played a very key part in Ashanti’s music career. She and her mom seem to have a very close relationship.

Jay-Z has always stated he grew up with no dad. He raps about all things his Mother had done for him growing up along with the role other family members played in his life.

Well, lucky New Yorkers got a trip down memory lane last night with the chance to see some of the members of Murder Inc. reunite on stage at the Dirty Money concert at the Hammerstein Ballroom. Opening act, Lloyd, brought out Ashanti and they performed their single, “Southside” in front of a surprised and excited crowd. Then Ja Rule joined them on stage as he and Ashanti performed “Always On Time”.  Wow, those songs definitely bring back memories!

Rumors about Sean “Diddy” Combs being romantically linked to singer Cassie Ventura circulated for years. Neither Cassie nor Diddy have confirmed or denied directly, but the two have been photographed extensively together and hints on Twitter leave most of us convinced the two are dating. R&B royalty in their own right, the couple stepped out together in 2007 but remained coy about the status of their relationship. Sources told gossip mags the couple had hit a “bumpy patch” in February 2009 but no one could have anticipated how far it would go. Brown pleaded guilty to felony assault charges and cannot come within 50 yards of RiRi.
