I thought that we left this in the 00′s. Especially when statistics show that 44% of black men are never married vs. 42% of black women. The official Miss Picky says every man and woman regardless of race deserves not to settle. Love is supposed to be fun. Let’s talk…

Today’s Kiss and Tell Report.

Sixth grade was my last year in coed education. After that my parents and I made the genius decision that I would enter a snooty all girls prep school for the remainder of my adolescence. Seemed like a good idea at the time but that’s a different article. And by article I mean therapy session.

I had a wise-cracking wizened old teacher, let’s call him Mr. Goldstein, who used his ‘I’m one of you’ schtick and stale jokes to push us. Goldstein actually managed to be amusing and relevant despite his advanced age. He was ancient. Like 30 years old at least. Anyway, in a stroke of teaching brilliance Mr. Goldstein turned our weekly quizzes into contests. The top 10 students in the class would to attend a fun-filled after school pizza party.

This was a huge friggin’ tween deal because it meant we girls had 4 opportunities a month to hang out with boys without being chased, hit, or wielding a joystick. What kind of joystick you manipulated depended on how ‘fast’ you were.

Being the reigning queen of the geeks and an over-achieving suck up meant that I was on the inside track to attend every pizza party. Luckily big butts were in style in my ‘hood. With some cajoling maybe we could even get Goldstein to play New Edition or Salt N Pepa. What better way was there to have your own personal Theo Huxtable jammin’ on the one?

The first few times that Goldstein dangled his pizza party carrot the top 9 kids out of 10 who qualified for the after school jam were girls. We had fun together and enjoyed our extra cheese but really missed the boys. Now that I think back, a big part of the boys not doing as well probably had to do with the uncoolness factor in urban schools surrounding achievement. For the other issues surrounding young black boys and learnin’ check out educator Jawanza Kunjufu.

But after 3 weeks of pizza parties that looked more like an episode of The Facts of Life than the hot gooey pizza filled co-ed Breakfast Club orgy my raging hormones craved it was clear that the girls were ‘winning.’ Something had to change.

What did Mr. Goldstein do at that point? Did he yell at the girls for overachieving? Berate us for being so accomplished? Tell us to aim lower and not leave our peers in the dust? Remove the standards to allow the boys their opportunity at high cholesterol and heartburn? Or tell us girls that we were stupid and desperate young bitches destined to die alone for even wanting to share the soiree with boys?

No. Mr. Goldstein challenged the 6th grade boys to step up to the plate and be men. He chastised the underachievers. He lectured them and offered them after school tutoring. He encouraged us girls to share photos and stories of our pizza party high life to tempt the dudes to get it together. And step up they did. Eventually the pizza party winners were almost 50/50.

Why am I sharing this now? A deep longing for ghetto Queens pizza? Well, yeah. But also it’s been reported that Nightline is once again tackling that poignant 00s question, “Why Can’t a Successful Black Woman Find a Man?”

Chris Ariens at MediaBistro reports that: Nightline’s Vicki Mabrey and talk show host Steve Harvey moderated a “Face-Off” debate between Sherri Shepherd, Jacque Reid, Hill Harper, and Jimi Izrael for an upcoming episode. [Video: My Interview with Hill Harper about black people and love] Pardon me while I lean out of my Harlem window to hurl on the last junkie left in the alley.

Haven’t we pummeled this horse to death already? Or at least put it out to pasture in The Washington Post, Essence Magazine, Ebony on The View, Oprah, and yes, Nightline. I haven’t had this many people in my bedroom since college. But that too is another therapy session.

For those of you new to this single black woman “debate” here’s what usually happens in these episodes: The host rallies off statistics like, “If you are a black woman with a degree you have a better chance of being one of Tiger Woods’ mistresses than getting married.” They then throw up graphs to show the percentages of black men who don’t graduate high school, who are in jail or gay, the rest who choose to date interracially. They highlight the fact that black women are least likely to date across racial lines.

At this point in the program several high achieving, successful women are shown with all of the degrees, hair relaxers, dreadlocks, Loubatin shoes and designer accoutrement that can fill the screen and asked what they look for in a man. Then like any other human being on the planet the women simply state what qualities they seek in a mate.

For example on my fame-whoring gig on the Drew Barrymore-produced “reality” series VH1′s Tough Love my list was: Single black female seeking a man that I am attracted to, who is kind, smart, gainfully employed, spiritual, funny, community-minded and available. For that my character was dubbed Miss Picky. Really? Are there people out there seeking someone unkind, not smart, unemployed, and unavailable? Methinks not.

So if a man is not interested “he’s just not that into you” but if you are not interested you’re too picky or something is wrong with you. Got it. Here’s the thing- all of us – even those in arranged marriages have a concept of what we seek in a partner. We may or may not physically list it out but the list is there. Do what works for you.

Obviously the great 6th grade pizza experiment wasn’t a clean test kitchen of the full psycho-socio-economic issues facing black men and women in America. But WHY are women being berated for wanting to date people that they like and have things in common with. This is absurd.

Why isn’t anyone addressing the men?

I think that most of us, even some Republicans, will agree that we are all created equal. People are interested in dating and marrying people who have the same interests they do. People tend to meet people primarily through work or in their social circle. Anyone can find just any man or any woman. What I hear from my friends – male and female – of all races is that they are seeking people they find right for THEM.

The insane thing is that this conversation has taken on a vicious black woman-hating tone– much of it from other people of color including black women and men. [Video: The Reason Black Men Jump Ship] This strain of the argument goes, “Black women are all nasty bitches so black men don’t want them.”

As a certified platinum certificate holder on nasty bitchiness with best friends of both the Becky and Keshia persuasion I can tell you that nastiness comes in every race, creed and gender. [Video: Black Men Seek White Women Because Black Women Are Too Angry]

Another strain of the conversation says that these women are caught up in the fairytale and want some unrealistic version of the prince. And men are exempt from fairytale ideals? Ever seen a barbershop wall? Or whom men cast to play their love interests in movies and music videos? How about whom wealthy men (including athletes and the like) with the largest dating pool choose to pursue?

Here’s the real deal– we are all seeking our Kings and Queens. That’s why Larry King is on his 8th divorce. As for being sold a fairytale we forget that men are taught the same fairytales that women are, and they too buy in to whatever their culture reinforces. For some that fairytale may be that the man should be a prince; for others that fairytale says that the man should be a pimp.

Enough of reinforcing this “no good men” prophesy. My father and brother are amazing black men so clearly this mystical white whale exists. Marriage numbers are down across the board because many women (gasp) don’t want to be married. Many people are living paperless with their life partners. They don’t register in these stats. As for the swirl, I too also used to feel like I only wanted to marry a black man but I’ve since grown to realize that I am seeking commonalities and attraction. Duh. I had forced myself to sit–and think of an idea–so that I could write a treatment to get a book deal but the vision was a synergistic one–once I created it. I saw THE CHEETAH GIRS as a group, story, that could perform in concerts, have a TV show, be books, merchandise–the sky the limit–which it literally became. The sky was the limit.

And the truth is, if I had created that vision with girls who were white–it would have been even bigger, but alas, my vision was always multicultural as that is what drives my stories because at the heart of my sagas is a girl from New York–in other words, just another girl on the IRT! So if I can see the girl on the IRT–then she become someone I can write about it–and in New York, you literally interface with people from every culture on the planet. I love that!
ABIOLA: Tell me more! What was your cheetalicious inspiration?

DEBORAH: I was lounging at home in my leopard PJs. laying on my leopard bedspread, propped up on my leopard pillows, wracking my brain trying to think what I would call my girls. I wanted to be a singer really bad when I was younger—used to whip up clothes that I sewed by hand and stand in the mirror pretending to be a singer.

My dreams were never dreams that I thought could come true; they served more of an escape from the extremely painful existence of growing up in foster homes with people who were mean to myself and other foster kids. Nonetheless, by the time I became a writer, and knew that I wanted to write something for the girlies, the editors at Disney Publishing approached me to come up with an idea while I was a columnist for Essence magazine, penning an entertainment news column called “Chit Chat and All That.’’

Once I wrapped my mind around the idea of a group of girls forming a singer group I still had to figure out, Who would they be? What would they look like? What would they call themselves? Then just like in the Wizard of Oz, I realized that I had the answer all along, right at my heels. Who was I trying to fool? Just go with what I know! I guess you could say I created THE CHEETAH GIRLS right out of my leopard lair!

Abiola: Fabulous! Did you expect THE CHEETAH GIRLS to be such a huge worldwide sensation?

Deborah: While I didn’t expect THE CHEETAH GIRLS to become so international, I did precisely envision it to have all the “legs” it had–I saw it from the moment I created it as something that would be books, movies, concerts, merchandise. My model for it was THE PARTRIDGE FAMILY. I loved the idea of a fake singing group—and seeing behind the microphone.

Abiola: Aha. And you are also a performer right?

Deborah: Yes, I’m a natural performer. Alas, I have been caught up in writing. I have performed parts of my one-woman show and stopped after my beloved playwright teacher, Rita Nachtmann died of cancer. She told me, to finish my show–but I didn’t. I have not faced how truly devastated I am about her untimely death. I will have to face all this–and move on.

Abiola: You are absolutely an inspiration. What’s next for you besides reading at Abiola’s Kiss & Tell Live?

Deborah: As you know, I created a new book series called CATWALK.The second book in the series–CATWALK: STRIKE A POSE has pounced onto bookshelves. Right now, I’m in development with TEEN NICK NETWORK to turn CATWALK into a tv series! And I will write the third novel in the CATWALK trilogy–CATWALK :RIP THE RUNWAY. Then I’m going to decide what to write next–I have been working on an adult novel for ten years! My website is: www.cheetahrama.com.

On Monday I was one of 10 writers and media personalities in NYC invited for an intimate conversation at the Hotel Plaza Athenee with author Jackie Collins. The word diva seems too small for bestselling author Jackie Collins. Jackie Collins is a legendary goddess, a queen and a woman among women. She has become internationally successful by weaving tales of intrigue and drama with incredibly strong female characters. There is no typical Jackie Collins character but her sexpot heroines from the dynamic Lucky to Anabelle of her new novel Poor Little Bitch Girl are empowered women who rewrite the rules of ‘should be’ and ‘supposed to’ in order to rule their worlds.

Sade’s Official Bio:

Helen Folasade Adu was born in Ibadan, Nigeria. Her father was Nigerian, a university teacher of economics; her mother Anne was an English nurse. The couple met in London while he was studying at the LSE and moved to Nigeria shortly after getting married. It’s my duty to introduce you to new cultural happenings. Theater is not just Tyler Perry and Last Mama on the Couch plays. If you liked the sketch comedy of Dave Chapelle back in the days or Funny or Die-style parody then you’ll love AMERICAN CANDY. Their next shows are this Thursday January 15 and Friday January 16, 2010, links below.

AMERICAN CANDY is a New York City based sketch comedy troupe that I had the honor of seeing perform a few of times. Last month I invited the show’s creator Hollie Harper to kick off the inaugural night of my monthly reading and performance series Abiola’s Kiss and Tell LIVE with her insane tune, “My P*ssy’s on Fire.” Yeah, they’re crazy like that.

This is a great date idea– and guess what? The team has invited me to perform sketch comedy with them for a couple of shows this spring.

ABIOLA ABRAMS: Hey love! So proud of you. Give us some background. What is AMERICAN CANDY?

HOLLIE HARPER: AMERICAN CANDY is crackalicious sketch comedy with naughty little songs.  We debuted at the Gotham Comedy Club in June 2009. Michael Pauley, artistic director of the Hyperion Theatre Company approached me about starting a new sketch comedy troupe to round out Hyperion’s roster.

ABIOLA: Crackalicious! Who’s involved?

HOLLIE: The troupe consists of 6 writer-directors and about 40 auditioned actors. Produced by me, the Creative Director and Patranila Jefferson. Choreographer, AC Jermyn; Composer, Jeff Joseph Jeudy. Along with me, writers include: Kevin Gilligan, Sherwin Smith, Joyce Turiskylie, Wilkie Cornelius and Keisha Zollar.

It doesn’t seem to make a difference with Mariah Carey and Nick Cannon. We guess that it’s because their maturity levels match. It seems to be working out with Ashton Kutcher and Demi Moore as well. With Usher and Tameka Raymond however, not so much. And update, Sisquo and the 14 year old baby mama makes us hurl.

Do relationship age gaps make a difference?

In his book, The Conversation, Harper says that there’s a rift in black communities and a dearth of black love due to lack of conversation. It makes sense that Tiger’s friends would have his back because not only was he their boy but they were probably on his payroll. Reportedly, Tiger’s wife Elin Nordegren feels betrayed by his friends as well.

ABIOLA: Nika, I am excited about our conversation. When I first read an excerpt of the book about 18 months ago, I was in a stressful relationship and vowing that I wanted to be single forevermore! (laughs) I enjoyed your premise so much that I wrote a blurb for the back of your book. Most people know you as an ABC News Producer. What made you write this book?

NIKA: I wrote I Didn’t Work This Hard Just to Get Married: Successful Single Black Women Speak Out for several reasons.  First, to let women know that being alone doesn’t mean you have to be lonely.  Second, that a single woman today has many opportunities to make her dreams come true.  Third, to show women they are scores of others out there who have been where they are and are succeeding, thriving, happy and healthy on their own; women who have lives filled with love even though they may not have a ring on their finger.

Fourth, to point out to all people that being single is a transitional thing, a state most of us will find ourselves in at several different points in our lives so it’s important you are happy with who you are so that losing someone won’t be as devastation.  Fifth, I was tired or relationship books offering advice to women on how to find a man without addressing the notion that not having one (a man) isn’t a death sentence.

ABIOLA: Critics often believe you wrote this book because you are not married and are trying to justify why it’s okay that you don’t have a wedding ring.  You know, they believe that every single woman MUST be in a relationship or be miserable. And I must say reality shows like even the one I was on don’t help. Was that a consideration?

NIKA: I’ve been in a relationship with the same guy for eight years but I don’t plan to marry or not marry, meaning people assume I would or have been pressuring him for a ring for a considerable amount of time but that’s not true.  I’ve simply tried to enjoy our lives together, spend time and accept him for who he is and therefore to be loved an accepted in return.  For a long time, my boyfriend was not marriage material because he did not desire to be married.  I heard him, accepted him and wholly agreed that I was in the same place.

I think that’s the key to any long term relationship, love and acceptance so I didn’t need this book or any other to justify my life because there’s nothing wrong with being unmarried.  I’d rather be single than married to the wrong man, force a man who isn’t ready to get hitched only to end up divorced or stay together miserable.

ABIOLA: Did you discover in this book why so many black women are single? A guy insisting on taking me home at a party last night was quoting the number 70%.

NIKA: I discovered that black women are not all angry or bitter that they are unmarried. I learned they haven’t given up on black men, but want them to excel in society and help rebuild the black family.  I found out that successful black women are willing to date and marry men who may not have as much as they do financially but men are reluctant to partner with a woman who has more than he does.

I now know black women are brave, accomplished and continue to carve out the lives they want in this society, raising kids, buying homes, starting businesses, earning degrees and caring for their family, friends and communities.   Most importantly, I discovered that single black woman still yearn to have a partner to share their lives with, they are just no longer willing to sell themselves short to find a mate.

ABIOLA: Interesting, thoughtful and powerful.  What do you hope people learn by reading I Didn’t Work This Hard Just to Get Married?

NIKA: If nothing else, I hope that people learn to cherish the time when they are single because when you are in a relationship is requires a huge sacrifice of time, money and effort, thereby making it more difficult for you to pursue you own selfish dreams—and might I add rightfully so.

ABIOLA: Let’s talk about the title. That seems to tick people off. The title of the book may make some men think you’re say black women don’t need them.  Clarify?

NIKA: Certainly, I don’t feel that women don’t need men at all.  Women may no longer need men for financial support, material things or security but I think you will find, even with the women in my book, we all need and crave love and companionship in our lives.  The only thing is now women don’t have to settle out of fear or being alone.

Actually, the title means you should do anything in your life just for one reason.  You should be the best you can be, because by living your potential you will be happy and accepting of yourself and attract people who are equally appreciative of you and your talents too.  It’s also a call to women to stop being what a man wants.  You know, my mother told me, “don’t start something you can’t maintain.”  I took that to mean be who you are and not who someone wants you to be because then and only then will they be able to see and love you for what you truly have to offer.

Indie film Truth Hall is the winner of multiple well-deserved awards including the International Black Film Festival’s Audience Choice Award, The International Black Film Festival’s Best Feature Award and San Diego Black Film Festival’s Best Comedy Award.

Check out my conversation with the award-winning filmmaker and lead actress Jade Jenise Dixon, of Stepping Stone Productions.

Abiola: Jade — it’s so exciting to see a smart, funny, upscale romantic comedy film featuring people of color. Congrats on getting your film made. When I was hosting The Best Short Films on BET, part of the show’s excitement was watching diverse, creative stories. What inspired you to become a filmmaker?

Jade: I wanted to tell stories that were important and depicted an upscale African American lifestyle. These stories are not often told so I wanted to present us in a different light. My latest project Truth Hall is smart, funny and upscale. I remember walking into a major Hollywood executive’s office with my script and he told me “I love the script but it might be too smart.” He didn’t think Black people could appreciate anything smart. That was a little disheartening for me because I felt like I wrote the best script I possibly could. I believe my film gave not only African American people a good voice but also African American filmmakers. There are so few of us in the industry, especially black female directors so it was important that I created something with a voice.

Abiola: Sadly, that is a common issue that I have run into numerous times from gatekeepers. When I was shooting my documentary Knives in My Throat dealing with bipolar disorder and mental illness, I was told the same thing, probably by the same executive! But thankfully, Jade, you persisted. Please tell our readers about your story. Summarize “Truth Hall.”

Jade: Truth Hall is about 5 women who reunite several years after college graduation for a wedding. As the story unfolds, the audience learns that there are a lot of skeletons in the closet and each one gets exposed in a dramatic yet sometimes comical banner. Truth Hall was the name of the dormitory they stayed in.

Abiola: Now, you also co-star in the movie. I was in awe of that fact! Was it difficult to balance so many hats?

Jade: It was really about the team. My team makes my job easy. Directing and producing is in my blood because I’ve been doing it for so many years. In high school, I directed For Colored Girls Who Have Considered Suicide When the Rainbow is Enuf. There’s an energy that comes over me once I’m sitting in the director’s chair. I go in and get the job done.

Abiola: Ntozake Shange’s for colored girls changed my life. Anybody who mentions that work is immediately someone whose work I’ll appreciate. I have a Safe Sex Awareness Initiative, so I was pleased as a viewer and an activist to see you introduce taboo topics. Did you find any resistance to tackling the stigmatized  subject of HIV and AIDS?

Jade: No, as a matter of fact I feel it helped fill a void. This is a story that needs to be told. There’s a line in the movie that says, “I had to take back the power it had on me.” There are no set of people who are exempt from this disease. HIV and AIDS affects so many people across the world.

Abiola: You also take on the sexuality taboos of lesbian love and homosexuality- in a romantic comedy. Tell us about that choice.

Jade: I wanted to show all sides of us. We can be mothers, wives, lawyers, doctors, etc. African American women can be anything. Homosexuality is heavily condemned in the African American community and it’s seen as an abomination by Christians. Although I’m a Christian, I feel like the idea of “belief” creates barriers as opposed to a sense of unity. Belief should never come before loving your children. Belief should never come before respecting other people.

Abiola: My girl Nicole Prescott is one of your stars. I love Nicole! She is extremely talented and known for a strong body of work.  Let’s talk about your casting process and the talent you chose.

Jade: Everyone knows Nicole! I didn’t hire a casting director, my company hired a few acting associates to find people. The difference between a casting director and an acting associate is that I get to see every person’s audition. It’s common practice for casting director’s to edit people’s auditions. I had the opportunity to see each person’s video so by the time we had table reads I had technically already seen everyone. We had a few table reads and then the final table read. At the final table read we selected a few cast members and the others came later.
