It was a year of first for fashion. First Africa had a inaugural fashion collective and now it is the big girls turn! June 25-27 in NYC was the very first Full Figured Fashion Week, which Kim Coles hosted. According to American Demographics, in America alone, there are 40 million women over size 14, spending $25 billion a year on clothing, or a quarter of all clothing sales! There hasn’t been any full figured representation in high fashion, though, until now! Fifteen designers flaunted their amazing interpretations of fashion for the plus size fashionista in a variety of ways! From swimwear to outerwear and everything in between.

The goals of the event were to get people more conscious of plus size women and the struggles they have shopping. Also, the event was a wake-up call for clothing producers to see the type of audience they are missing.

This is much needed as the size of a fashion model is shrinking along with the patience of many full figured women. I would argue many people couldn’t name 5 plus size models, but could easily name five non-plus ones. We know the queen of fashion, Anna Wintour, isn’t too happy about this recent development, based on her statement that “I had just been on a trip to Minnesota where I can only kindly describe most of the people that I saw as little houses, and I just felt like there’s such an epidemic of obesity in the United States. And for some reason everyone focuses on anorexia … We need to spend money, time, and education on teaching people to eat , exercise, and take care of themselves in a healthier way.”

The past 10 years has seen major improvement in this area. Now there are at least select brands that produce some very cute clothes for big, beautiful women, however it is not surprising for a full figured woman to have to shop online or search weeks before finding a great outfit. These women should be able to spend a day shopping where she doesn’t have to sit behind a computer screen and stare at pictures. Maybe this will be the breakthrough for plus size fashion.

Take a look at a recap of the show…

It’s ONE thing to be FULL figured (12-16) and TONED. Quite another to be FAT, HUGE and OBEAST (yeah I know it’s obese but some of ya’ll..done went past even that!) and try to say you’re THICK when that’s not the case! Okay, good point in case: Take picture # 13; Red is THICK & CURVY. Ms Rainbow Bright is simply FAT and her titties are pushed SO far UP that if she jumped–she’d knock herself OUT! Pretty legs below the knees though…but that dress is horrible! She look like an over sized Skittle! I’m just sayin’…

Anna Wintour is right! “LOSE the weight and FEEL GREAT!” Don’t try to cover it or hide it under pretty fabric!

I am Thick-size 14/16 but they need to make fashion FOR US and not make us fit into FASHION to make us look worse. I agree with the striped dress comment, why if i have 38ddd’s would i want to wear a dress where the belt is right under my breast. If i m thick and have a gut why would iw ant to wear an outfit so tight my gutt looks now like an azz instead of a stomach. They need to make Fashion for us and not just in our size. Just becuase it comes in a 28 does not mean u should wear it-hence a tank top with no straps where u cant wear a bra. I am happy for the effort but still disappointed at the look.

Its so hypocritical that fat, obese, thick whatever you like to classify us as, we get knocked for not being healthy and told to lose the weight and not cover fat in pretty fabric. But what about the DECADES of anorexic/bulimic size 0′s that have been running the fashion industry? The majority of them are NOT heathly nor are they happy but they get to cover their bony butts in pretty fabric and not get scrutinized to the extent of any of us that are plus size and happen to want fabulous clothing to reflect our personality/style. There is nothing wrong with wanting to be beautiful at any size, but society/media pressure to lose weight because “it doesn’t look good” has the opposite affect that those people claim to want. Soooo… off my soapbox now lol just had to say a lil something!

Hot Commodity12 you said it. Being a thick chick I can still turn heads. But to name this article “Fatshionistas”is ignorant and an insult to its readers. The ignorance is that most people who are between 14 and 22 are naturally like that. If you have parents that are big boned or thick you will not be a size 2. Genetics have something to do with it. Also, being a medical underwriter I found that some women who are over size 14, it was due to medication they have to take due to medical conditions and other medical problems. I talked to a customer of mine and she told me she had tumors in her stomach and she had numerous surgeries. She couldn’t help her size. But she was constantly made unease by others and society…that was until she met me. Ladies and gents… Be THICK, SEXY, and FAB*LIS. Screw everyone else.

Its lovely to see plus size women and fashion making a voice for the average american woman. You don’t have to be thin just to be beautiful. You should be beautiful at any size but also healthy. That’s what young girls need to hear and not put down. Also to name this article FATsionista was pretty ignorant and rude. You could have named it something else.

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/OUT_SPOKEN_DIVA/ OUT_SPOKEN_DIVA

I so agree Poetic Dancer the titlew of the article is distasteful. It’s like taking a jab on the sly. I kept up with the activities that week via Twitter and CurvyChick.com. And it sounds and looks like it was great success.

I am laughing at blksxylady46′s ignorant ass! There are plenty of beautiful plus size women who make a lot of money! Its all in how you carry yourself and dress for your size…just because your a size 2 or 3 doesn’t make you any more beautiful then ME or any other REAL women out here. My honest opinion blksxylady46 shouldn’t call anyone UGLY or Gross when her ass is ugly as f**k…you can call us FAT all day long but you obviously put a lot of energy into hating us…there’s a FAT kid in there LMAO…someone feels threated…but guess what here we are…we are beautiful, we are the majority, and its about time people took notice!

I’m so proud of people who stop wining about others pointing fingers at them, laughing at them and calling them names!

These people are winners for even trying to do it naturally and very healthy. The best way to do anything! My fav so far is Shayla. • http://www.blackplanet.com/specialkindalady/ specialkindalady

Why oh why do big women think small(er) only comes in a 0 or a 2? Damn! It does come in a 8, 9, 10, 11 and TWELVE! Nobody wants to be overweight…and nobody wants to be UNDER weight! It’s all about fitting properly in clothes that aren’t pulling, grabbing or gasping for space! It’s easier to grab greasy fries and a burger than it is to grab a treadmill or run track…I know. I know. Heard it all before (hell, I used to be the one making the BIG boneded excuses)…but damn. Do something about being 5 dress sizes too big. I lost weight naturally and so did 3 of my overweight girlfriends. We got tired of just simply walking and sweating from our bodies working extra hard to propel itself FORWARD! We also got tired of having to shop in the BIG girls stores when all the really cute items were in the smaller women’s section. We got tired of being sick and tired, did cardio kick boxing, ran track, rode our bikes, and ran those damn pounds right off our ass, thighs and backs! So when I talk to BIG girls about working out and losing weight and they start getting angry…and making up all kinds of stupid and ridiculous excuses like I used to (even Monique had to get REAL and drop the weight excuses cause her man wasn’t finding it cute anymore!) I show them a BEFORE picture of me…and they shut the heck up! Stop trying to beautify it. If you’re a size 26…vow to get down to a size 20. Size 20? Vow to get down to a size 16! Get off your ass and WORK it out! It’s not going to be easy. Trust me! But every inch you lose is an inch MORE you’ve just added to your LIFE! My kids are proud of my accomplishment!

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/tasteeKOco/ tasteeKOco

OMG I am so sad that this is your thought process and you claim to be a woman that was once plus size. I am a big girl and I love every inch of me I walk every day and I am happy. I eat fries but I also love a good salad big doesn’t neccesarily mean unhealthy. I am a bit tall and heavy on top so my curves fit my body. Iam happy that you lost your weight but I do hope that you did it for you and not to fit in to someone elese’s opinion of beauty. I say it proudly. I AM A BIG SEXY LADY!!!!!!

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/Ceress86/ Ceress86

tasteeKOco- I agree with you whole heartedly…and just an fyi to specialkindalady a size 12 is considered plus size a size 10 is where the line stops at straight sizes…I am a “big” girl I excersize everyday and eat healthy…I have never made an excuse about my weight in my life…I am a proud size 16 5’8″ tall and all curves, flat stomach, thick thighs, and have always been an athelete and I am completely comfortable in my skin…I am beautiful and confident and don’t need reassurance of my beauty from a “once upon a time big girl” people need to learn to love themselves more and worry about others less.

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/Peninsulachick/ Peninsulachick

Interesting: a recent study shows that BMI (body mass index) in African-Americans may not be indicative of how “fat” they are. What does this mean? Well, simply put, a “plus-size” black female actually has more muscle mass than a non-black female who wears the same dress size. We need to realize that the standard of beauty established based on Eurocentric ideals are simply not applicable to us. This fashion show proves that. I know lots of plus sized women (16, 18, and so on)with flat stomachs and non-flabby arms and thighs. We need to appreciate ourselves for the lush, beautiful beings we are. This is a wonderful advancement in the fashion industry.

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/AntiFeminization/ AntiFeminization

    @PennisulaChick,

I am feeling your comment like Anne Frank and braille.

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/horny_devil84/ horny_devil84

    AntiFeminization…

Anne Frank and braille aren’t related. Anne Frank was the Jewish girl that hid in an attic from Nazis during WWII, with her family. I think you were going for Helen Keller. Sorry to be pick knits.

I’m glad to see that the “standard” of beauty is changing. The funny thing to me was that polls always suggested that men typically preferred larger women. That has existed for some time. Media is responsible for thin being so in since the 80s.

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/specialkindalady/ specialkindalady

LOL@horny_devil84! Thank you for correcting that! Good to see someone else who paid attention in school instead of the gossip girl garbage! But anyways…to answer those BIG girls who get all riled up when someone talks about being overweight….

Do YOU! Whatever THAT means for you. I know what it meant for me. I KNOW 12 is still a ‘plus’ size–but coming from a size 20 or 22–that’s small! Damn, folks get all indignant as if I know any of you personally. I spoke about ME and MY FRIENDS and what WE did about all that excess and very unnecessary weight. If being overly heavy floats your boat, and ya man likes it…then, hell…don’t lose it! Keep it! Hold on to it for dear life! Cuddle up with it! Wrap your man up in it and BE HAPPY! Like I said…DO YOU!

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/afro-Chique/ afro-Chique

alright … this is coming from a plus size woman who is making an effort to NOT be plus size.

i don’t want for anyone to hate who they are or not accept who they are on the inside – however, i don’t believe that there should be so many things around that make being plus sized something to be “desired”. really.

fact of the matter is, being overweight is unhealthy – for everyone – ESPECIALLY african americans. *dingding* HEALTH ISSUES!?

there are many beautiful, plus size women – but it doesn’t need to be celebrated. getting healthy should be celebrated.

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/JaxSunShine9/ JaxSunShine9

Afro-Chique I definitely agree with you. I am in an effort too to lose weight because it is so unhealthy being overweight. I believe I am beautiful thin or heavy but I am much HEALTHIER THIN.

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/BlackAmazonBeauty/ BlackAmazonBeauty

Thats right us Big Girls are sexxy too. Watch out skinny biotches!

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/Poetic_Assasin/ Poetic_Assasin

I kind of agree with Afro-chique that being fat is unhealthy and should not be glamorized. But then again i don’t, because being too thin is also unhealthy, and that is the image that America has been sold as beautiful for decades now, and is why so many little girls have eating disorders. Sure, being too fat is unhealthy, but people can not lose weight over night, and in the mean time, we deserve to have clothing that makes us feel good about who we are. What is not right is that most major designers do not have a line of clothes for bigger people. Just because we are fat doesn’t mean that we dont care about our appearances or want the best for ourselves. I for one, am very into fashion and often outstyle the thin dudes, which isn’t easy with the selection of clothes that bigger guys have to choose from. I’m just waiting for the male fashion designers to show the big boys some of the love that the big girls are getting from designers. If i were a designer i would want my logo stretched across the body ofa bigger person, because then everyone could see it. I don’t understand how people think. :)

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/blksxylady46/ blksxylady46

I remember reading a comment somewhere on the issue of losing weight and someone said…for all those BIG women who holla about “BIG is beautiful and SEXY”…and how they don’t want to lose the weight…that “If there were an (instant skinny pill/weight loss pill) they could take that worked…you should stand back from all the stampede you’d get…and see…of all those knocking you over to get to it!”

It’s hell carrying around an extra 20-30 pounds. Can you imagine carrying 100 to 200 extra pounds or more on your body?!? That is sheer torture! Every body part gotsta hurt, especially your feet & knees! Don’t even talk about the chafing on your feet, the sweat under your titties, stomach rolls and leg rolls.

Also, when you got so much stomach that you can’t even SEE your *stuff?* And you gotta *strain* to get your arms around your belly to even try to *wash* down there? How do you know you did a (good) cleaning job? Not only is it uncomfortable to be over weight, it’s unhealthy! All that bacteria build up….yeesh! Don’t take MY word for it. Ask ya Gynecologist! They see plenty of it.

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/blksxylady46/ blksxylady46

Hmm…all this emotion over here on this thread…yet…I don’t see a peep outta ya’ll on the “Dance Your Ass Off” thread. Why is that???

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/Smyles02/ Smyles02

Some of you are thinking nothing of your health. You’re more worried of what the next person thinks of you. Halle Berry is a diabetic. Being overweight can increase problems for health, but if it’s in your bloodline to have a disease or to be sick, then that’s what it’ll be. You can still maintain health at heavier weights. Walking 30 minutes a day has always been recommended and eating more, not only, healthier foods. But regardless of the such, accepting ourselves for who we are, is what we’re doing and we want to wear cute ass clothes doing it. Money doesn’t stop at a woman in a size 6. These plus size designers are about to rack up on plenty. I will most definitely be one of the ones to provide it.

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/Smyles02/ Smyles02

I just realized, three things you don’t have to fight for in this country: being white, thin and rich. Everything else? You damn near have to get up with somebody about. Being gay/lesbian, black, overweight, etc. I’ve read some of these comments…my goodness. Are, those of you objecting, you at a point to where you have to down the next to make yourself feel better? As I’ve read and said, you can be as healthy as the next and be at point of what is considered overweight. For the record, any double digit number is considered plus size. So smaller than the next or not, you’re part of the “undesirable” while you’re trying to put yourself above.

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/ladymizvee/ ladymizvee

It’s good to see women with curves on the runway…but I would be pissed if I got all dressed up, feeling like a diva, only to have somebody call me a “FATshionista.” That right there makes me more determined to keep working toward a size 8.

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/ANEWME09/ ANEWME09

Ummmm blklady46.. I think your descriptive insults went a bit overboard. I dont have those issues that you were referring to with hygeine, bacteria buildup, chaffed feet.. what da? Being overweight is NOT healthy but lets try to build each other up and not tear others down that may not be what you consider the way they should be…

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/Nettie_MP07/ Nettie_MP07

Some of the comments on here are so, so sad.The even sadder thing is most of the nasty comments are from so called women. In the first place to tittle the article FaTshionistas is the first mistake. These are the very comments that create bulimia, anorexia, deprssion and a list of other mental/physical problems. It really dosen’t matter what size you are as long as you’re healthy and you love yourself. F*CK the haters, don’t bother yourself about what others have to say. One thing I have learned being on both sides of the fence is a woman is a natural hater, she lives for it becuase most of the time she has a flaw that she is insecure about so to keep the heat off herself, she turns it on you. To those of you who felt it necessary to down plus size women because . . .well I’m pretty sure you have no valid reason, may I please say, get a life, find a job, fix whatever problem you have and then occupy your time doing something productive that way you won’t fell the need to come on bp and pollute the comment boxes with these ignorant words you call an opinon.

3 things NEVER to discuss (because there will NEVER be an agreement); weight, religion and politics! LOL! Cause someone is always going to take it personally and get mad. So just let it go!

Let me roll on over to the more agreeable thread: Dance Your ASS Off! That show is going to be a hit cause nobody is in denial of their goal and why.

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/SoSexxiMeMe/ SoSexxiMeMe

Question: Why is this thread getting so many heated comments…yet, the “Dance Your Ass Off” thread…isn’t? What is it about having to put in the work to TONE up that scares people so? Is it the effort it takes to lose or is it having to do it which you may think says you acknowledge you are a *fat* and have to or need to do something (drastic) about it?

I got an aunt and a cousin (her daughter) who both went thru that Gastic ByPass surgery and I tell ya…yeah, they lost a lot of weight (but they could have done it naturally. Just too damn lazy to, I feel! But anyways…) all that (hanging) skin…and whew–those railroad track stretch marks from having allowed themselves to get THAT big! My aunt almost died trying to lose so much weight and now she is both mad at herself for allowing food to control and consume her life and also at not taking a more slower, natural and healthier approach to weight loss. She has to take medication for the rest of her life…

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/aquafina_5985/ aquafina_5985

First of all, I am a big girl. I love everything about myself. I have tried repeatedly to lose weight, I even have a membership at the local gym and go the required 3-4 days a week like my trainer requested. I have no medical condition that is preventing me from weight loss. But with all my attempts of weight loss, I have come to realize one thing, maybe i am suppose to be big. SO… all of you who have negative things to say about bigger people, you all need to take a good hard look in the mirror, because you have some major self-esteem issues to work through. Just because we are big doesn’t mean were nasty we take more care of ourselves, just like the skinny ones, so please….please…. please don’t get your facts twisted. Big women have curves and personalities also our clothing may cost more. But we can have just a much fun, if not more, than anyone else. I know I can.

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/Cheron32/ Cheron32

I was reading these comments and I must say, well said Nettie_MP07. What most people fail to realize is that food isn’t the only thing that enables a person to gain weight. It could also be what you drink, such as; alcohol, or juices high in sugar. Or if you are like a friend I know, it could be as a result of medication such as; prednisone or prednisalone (pill that decreases inflammation and an eye drop) both of these drugs make a person gain weight if consumed over a long period of time. Therefore, for someone to sit up there and diss someone for being overweight really displays how ignorant the person is when in fact, you dont know what the person is going through to become plus size. I admit, I am a plus size woman, and I do need improvement, however; I am not going to let a ignorant person penetrate my spirit with negative words about my weight. For one I think I am a beautiful person inside and out, and if these women are able to strut their stuff on the runway, then God Bless them! walk that walk sister, if I had an agent, I would be out there doing the same thing and wouldn’t give a **** what any one else had to say.

during my early teen adolescent years and because of extreme asthma & severe lung deficiency from birth, an allergy specialist placed me on somewhat of a last resort healthcare regimen. i was subjected to steroid injections twice weekly and took daily multiple doses of prednisone, seldane & deconamine. i was also dependent upon a maxair inhaler; all steroidal. and while his efforts worked by keeping me alive with the ability to obtain and maintain proper lung function, it came with a few major drawbacks, one of them being weight gain. My developing figure went from adolescent to full grown within approximately two weeks. A once size 3/4-5/6 petite frame catapulted to a size 11/12 seemingly overnight! a woman’s size 11/12 is where i remained for years. i’ve finally been able to remove the weight but not without great effort, mental focus, determination and will power. not all overweight people are lazy couch potatoes. sometimes who we become is totally beyond our control. with me it was a choice. either be alive and overweight with or petite and dead.

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/Tishaunh/ Tishaunh

look i usually don’t leave any comments but i was reading some comments made by skinny females, ok look your small good for you go about your business and be happy don’t come on here and hate on other women because we are bigger than you, just because you have a smaller waistline doesn’t make you more intelligent, beautiful, likeable, etc.,,,and don’t put GOD in your ugly comments because GOD is not about hate but love, and most of the skinny girls i know has extremely low selfesteem, they cover it up by showing their azz and dancing like a hoe in the club, just because a man shows you attention because you have a big azz doesn’t mean a thing and if all you show is your goodies no man will ever fixate on the beauty of your mind so yes we are bigger but you are not better and yes some women struggle with their weight and hate the way they look but it is because of a shallow society, so in closing big girls, fat girls, plus size women, what ever you want to call us: put GOD first, love yourself, love your family, and treat everyone with respect even the haters for when GOD calls you home your weight won’t matter. KEEP YOUR HEAD UP, SO YOU CAN SEE THE BULL**** IN FRONT OF YOU,ALL WOMEN LOVE YOURSELF AND DO YOUR THING, BECAUSE NO MATTER WHAT SIZE YOU ARE THERE WILL ALWAYS BE HATERS, LOL JESUS HAD HATERS SO WHAT KEEPS US FROM HAVING THEM.

For all those scared of the word fat, fatshionista is a major set back for plus size women, however full figured women who are in fashion call themselves fatshionistas, google it. It is about size acceptance and looking good at the same time! It is meant to be a complement to be called a fatshionista. A plus size girl with some major style points!

By my standards I’m perfect but by the BMI index I’m not. At the end of the day who are you going to listen to a society that adores women who bones you can see or the woman in the mirror

The average woman in America is not considered in the world of high-fashion, which is a shame because most women fit about a size 12-14….wow, wake up call. I’m proud of thick girls, just because your thick doesn’t mean that your not healthy. But, I’m glad to see more thick girls getting some shine, keep it going. Love ya curves, love yourself
