FreeWe were always fans of former BET’s 106 & Park VJ Free.  We tuned in to see what hairstyle she was rockin’ and Free never disappointed.

Free recently did a post on her hair and shared the trials and tribulations we all go through on a daily basis:

So here’s the background on my hair: I was born with a head full of it (in more ways than one)! My hair is a mixture of my DNA, strong and stubborn in parts (especially on top of my head) and soft in curly in other spots, which makes me have what hairdressers call an “interesting head.” Here’s the real on my background: African American, Indian, and West Indian.

What does that have to do with my hair? Everything. Because I can wet it and it’ll get curly but as it dries it just rises up to that afro (even when I dont want it to). If I want a straight look for a night (and I mean one night because the humidity will curl it right back up) I use a blow dryer, flat iron and hairspray to keep it down as long as I can but I promise you in the AM my hair will be on its way back to its afro.

Thank you free for sharing your story..I understand ,I go through it everyday in the summer but im glad to be able to.every other season is fine.Keep doing you the way you want the way you want. Im everything you said in my background except the west indian.the great great grandma was irish instead with african american ,cherokee indian. Can women rock their hair anyway they choose? of course, weaves ,natural whatever, but im happy to see more women speaking about what they naturally have and having an aray of options to do different things with.we are all mix with other things.not a problem to speak on it. :)

look at it this way, would you date a brother that wears a blonde toupe trying to look like Brad Pit? well thats how silly black women look wearing blonde wigs..

Dude you need to STFU 4real. Think B4 you speak or type, and don’t compare all black women to a pic of Beyonce with blonde hair. That’s just a personal issue you have, I’ve never had curly hair but I don’t see anything wroung with it. I had it when I was born but my NATURAL hair is str8. Even the times that I have worn weave, whether str8, or clurly, or a different color, it was laways thought of as my own without me even saying a word. Further more, I’m never ashamed because if I bought it, it’s mine no matter what. But I always let people know, this is weave, but by me doin my own hair, I know how to make it look natural. That’s the point of adding it, to give more length volume or a desired color, all in a short period of time. Half if not most, of these celebrities wear extensions, fake ponytails, weave( glued or sow-in ). If you do your research then you would find out the same facts. Man I get tired of schoolin foolish black people, some you all are just really embarassing, with the stupid remarks.

Thanks to you men that commented. I wear my hair natural, and i get sick of the stares. I have curly frizzy hair, and I see women get this type of hair weaved into their own. I have heard celebs talk about women with the natural hair. I had alot of respect for Mr. Steve Harvey, but after hearing him laugh about natural hair, I was alittle taken aback. I don’t listen to him anymore.

I have that interesting hair too. It shrinks of course, but it’s just what I was born with. My hair hasn’t been this long in a while and I’m lovin’ it. And the growth is phenomenal! And when I do tiny twists it’s so cute. So I’m keeping it this way until it’s down my back.

Free is beautiful and would look good even bald. But I don’t see all these brothers running after and promoting our sistas who don’t have such eurocentric noses and tawny complexions as she does. So, where’s the “natural look betters” chants then? (hmmm-I hear crickets..lol)

Hairstyle is a personal choice. And a Black woman is no less a “real” black woman b/c she chooses to straighten her hair. Fashion encompasses alot of different styles and hair is no different. Damn-stop finding trivial s**t to give Black women a hard time for!
It’s just hair people-it’s not that serious! lol

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/princess_lala01/ princess_lala01

Free has worn her hair in an afro & straight, she looks good with both styles. I wish I can look good with an afro but I don’t(it just shrinks & looks shorter than what it is),I straighten out my hair often because it’s much easier to manage than if it wasn’t straight. It’s just easy to deal with, especially for me. I have really thick hair so just letting it go will not do for me. I don’t do all these things to my hair to follow anybody,it’s just how I make it easier to deal with.
Every woman has a different style whether it’s in a weave, its curly, straight, natural, braids or whatever. We are all beautiful no matter what style we choose to wear our hair in

I’m now going natural myself and it is sometimes a pain in the ass. But I will chose this over that over processed stuff anyday. My hair is stronger and growing longer. When I want to straighten it, I will either hot comb it or blow dry it. It all works for me either way it goes. I love it!

This is a verse from one of Gil Scott-Heron’s poem called Brother:

calling this man an Uncle Tom and telling this woman to get an afro but you won’t speak to her if she looks like hell, now will you brother some of us been checking your act out kinda close
and by now its looking kinda shaky the way you been rushin’ people with your super black bag

I will say this not trying to slam anyone but the way one chooses to wear their hair is a preference, it has nothing to do with a eurocentric or “white-washed” way of thinking if a woman chooses a weave (as long as it isn’t blonde or one of those other outrageous colors). Simply put, it’s what that particular woman deems looks best on HER. Speaking from the point of a woman who has gone natural and weaved it doesn’t take away from the fact that I am proud to be black,I’ve embraced the skin I’m in. My 11 year old daughter is being raised as a proud little queen.(No chemicals, LOL.)

Who told black women that nappy hair makes them look like hell? who said nappy hair isn’t attractive? who said you have to have straight hair to be beautiful?..its sad that in 2010 black women still have that slave mentality, black men woke up..they used to sport gerri curls and conks, trying to look white also, the only people who look good with white looking hair are white people, white women are beautiful witht heir own unique look, as with Asians and Black women..again ladies…you don’t have to look white to look right..now its true women can wear what they want, but every time you slip on that weave,or blonde wig, you’re actually saying, i need to look white to look beautiful..I need to hide my real hair so people will think I’m beautiful,I’m not as beautifu as Asian and white women…unless i look like them…

the truth is, you’re beautiful naturally…

To my sistas: I feel you on the idea of wearing your hair any way you want to. I used to be in the salon EVERY week, gettin’ my “hurr did.” For the last 13 yrs, though, i’ve been totally natural. I’ve got ‘locs that USED TO be down to my knees…until I cut them (so now they’re only just below my butt). My decision to go natural was a spiritual one, not one made b/c of the latest fad. I believe that our hair carries our energy, and the way it grows is not just a genetic -but also a spiritual- thing.

Caucasian women always walk up to me with the “Your hair is so beautiful! Is all of it REAL?!” I understand that they are shocked to see a black woman w/ long hair, but when my sistas ask that same question as if they don’t realize we can grow our hair just as long as anybody else…*shrug* it’s a little frustrating.

Sistas, don’t buy in to the belief that we don’t have the ability to grow long, luxuriant, healthy hair, too; just take in to consideration that all caucasian women can’t grow long hair, just like some of us can’t…and realize that, whether our hair is short, medium-length, long, straight, natural or otherwise, WE ARE STILL BEAUTIFUL (…and our “real” brothas will love and accept us however we carry it, if we love and accept ourselves)!

she used to wear her hair like this before i dont think its new but it fits her face very well. Someone said somethin about women going natural and slavery. Its a personal choice i know a afro wont do nothing for me. I wear weave to get the styles/colors I want without damaging my hair. Having natural hair can be tough because there are always negative comments coming from somewhere whether its a job (especially in corporate America)or coming from men (mostly black). So its a personal choice that I feel should not be a big deal. Ppl should be judged based on there character not their hair whether they grew it or not. It has nothing to do wit slavery.

Weave does speak to ones character, if it is not there for medical reasons or an occasional flare of artistic expression what it says to the world is that parts of you are fabricated and phony. It also says that you are intimidated by who you are and are desperately seeking attention and racial acceptance by individuals other than your own racial gene pool. It demonstrates that you are unwilling to take the necessary care and time to groom the assets given to you by your parents and our Creator. In fact it ultimately indicts GOD as an inappropriate judge of what is beautiful.

I hope that some day you will remove the world’s trappings of false beauty, groom the natural curl that our creator has invested in you to represent, raise your fist high and proclaim to the Universe. BLACK IS BEAUTIFUL.

As a physics major at the University of GEORGIA, I heard FROM many African students in the African Student Body that after growing up in Africa on Black exploitation movies they thought that they could proudly come to America and display their Nubian Heritage. But where deeply disappointed to learn that this was not the case. The African American female has set the bar of Racial Pride to low. She will not engender original and personal pride in her children and will not keep the faith of fidelity with her natural mate. In return the Black man is loosing his patients with her and for this and other reasons has turned to the gates of other nations to posses their crowns.

The gig is up for the time has arrived for the Black man to realize that his freedom is discovered and found in the embrace of another.

We need not fire bullets to attain our equality, but with each load divinely packed in our manhood we can witness with our own eyes, hands and lips this world go from white to khaki, to brown, then back to a BlackPlanet, with or without you.

The style is cute. Is it her hair? Just wondering because I am so sick of seeing weave on black women. I mean every where you go there’s black women with weave and most of the time it’s weave that’s not even close to their own texture, which makes them look like bigger fools.

The choice is yours sisters. But brothers in general fully respect a woman of any race who is her natural self, not hidden behind make-up, wigs, perms or weaves. Sisters, you have more power than you think and we love when show it naturally.

and to add to this post, these verses speak of Gods judgment upon the unsaved, notice they are judged because of their pride in their looks, and how they dressed..sound familiar?

The sins that provoked God to deal thus with them were, 1. Their defiance of God (v. 8). 2. Their impudence (v. 9). 3. The abuse of power to oppression and tyranny (v. 12-15). 4. The pride of the daughters of Zion (v. 16).

Isaiah 3:1… God, in this chapter, goes on to foretel the desolations that were coming upon Judah and Jerusalem for their sins, both that by the Babylonians and that which completed their ruin by the Romans, with some of the grounds of God’s controversy with them. God threatens, I. To deprive them of all the supports both of their life and of their government (v. 1-3). II. To leave them to fall into confusion and disorder (v. 4, 5, 12). III. To deny them the blessing of magistracy (v. 6-8). IV. To strip the daughters of Zion of their ornaments (v. 17-24). V. To lay all waste by the sword of war (v. 25, 26).

In the midst of the chapter the prophet is directed how to address particular persons. (1.) To assure good people that it should be well with them, notwithstanding those general calamities (v. 10). (2.) To assure wicked people that, however God might, in judgment, remember mercy, yet it should go ill with them (v. 11). O that the nations of the earth, at this day, would hearken to rebukes and warnings which this chapter gives!

and ultimately this speaks to the churches of today…

All women of color do not wear fake hair. There are those that choose to be natural and not even having a relaxer, there are those who go faded or completely bald. A vast majority does want to wear weave but who cares as long as they feel good about themselves. No man needs to tell a woman of I dont want u cuz ur hair isnt grown from your scalp. Puhleeze u can keep it moving if thats the case. Some men need to stop acting like they just want a natural woman. We they see her with her head nappy, nothing done to her nails, flat chested, bare face wether she’s appealing or not, they still turn to the woman with the long hair real or not, nice complexion, make up made or natural, nails done and all. Shouldnt matter wether a woman is naturally beautiful or need man made things to enhance her beauty. As long as she thinks she’s beautiful. Cuz all we need is more black women out here thinkin they arent beautiful and can never look better than the next. Stop making women feel like if they natural they arent beautiful or if they were human hair, acryllic nails and make they are fake and not beautiful. Changing who u r on the inside is being fake.

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/younghazelj/ younghazelj

ok, Highly_Flavored06. so youre saying it’s ok that SOME black women make themsleves feel better about themsleves by getting fake hair and fake whatever else?! yeah i will keep it movin then. if you keep finding men that dont like you for who you are, then whos fault is that?! these men are superficial and so are a lot of people. that’s life. I dont need them and neither do you. my mom or my sister don’t wear any of that and my moms hair is short…really short. like dreaded up! and this isn’t about makeup but since you want to make it about that too then we can go there as well. you don’t have to cake makeup on. simple is better. i see so many women walking around with fake this fake that. all that stuff will be gone when youre old and grey so why be with a women based off of what she puts on herslf now? so you’re right, i don’t base it off looks cause if i did, i wouldn’t give a damn about who’s hair they had in their head!

Stop tryna judge women who wear weaves.. that’s their demon and they should not be judged because they haven’t embraced a natural hairdo.. we’ve been conditioned so much to wear weaves and perms that it’s part of who we are.. men get hair cuts so what do you have to worry about.. NOTHING!! Let us do us.. your the first one’s talking bout fake this and fake that but you love it.. your infatuated w/it.. quick to put sistah’s down while uplifting others.. GET A GRIP!! Eat shyt cause I personally know you all are full of it (cause you approach me…lol..and give me kudos and accolades about my youthful appearance…lol) The same appearance I bought for a few thousand dollars and a couple round trip revolving door appointments with a great British surgeon…Mark Preston BTW. I like Frees hair. It becomes her but it doesnt become me. I like my hair weave in or out…braids down my back today or a bald headed fade tomorrow. SHHHHHHH somebody might hear the real reason you want a so-called natural sister cause (cause ugly comes in pairs.)

i wear weave sometimes, but sometimes i dont, i braid it up, perm it up fro it up ………point is all women change things and so do men we change our hair (men cut, braid, shape up), we change our clothes and so on, geez people hair and clothes and shoes does not define a person, i am beautiful outside and the same inside no matter how my hair is MEN be REAListic

@islandgirlie72 i completely agree. Half of them cant even tell whether its a weave or not anyway and its so much mixing now a days how would they really know if you straighten or wave up your hair with products. I think its stupid to hold this against women. I can see if you lookin like Nicki Minaj everyday that may be too much for SOME guys but its all about the personality. If she looks good she looks good. Yea it sound good but do you really live by wat u say? probably not.

im not speaking for any other guy on here. i live by what i say. i have asked women ive dated in the past what was the need for extra hair? i dunno. i guess if society tells you dont look good enough times, then just cave in and do what everybody else does, right?! sad…so sad. women like free and lauren hill should be embraced, you spat upon and told they need straighter and longer hair. NO women needs that. date a real man who likes you for you when you get up in the morning with “bad hair”

A Weave speakS to ones character, if it is not there for medical reasons or an occasional flare of artistic expression what it says to the world is that parts of you are fabricated and phony.
