Love going natural, but enjoy an occasional change? As a person who’s always going from curly to straight, I need a flat iron that’ll last me through the long haul!

As you guys know, Earth Day recently passed, and we’ve been focused on eco-friendly giveaways, spas, and products all this week. But Earth Day’s passing doesn’t mean you can’t still do good things for your planet! Award-winning styling iron brand FHI Heat has launched the “Do More” styling irons series, and purchases of any iron in the line will go to a particular charity, helping you do something good for your world while doing something great for your hair.

We can say personally that FHI makes some of the best flat irons on the market today, and we want to share one with YOU, our beautiful readers! We’re giving away one “Do More: Water” styling iron to one lucky reader.

A portion of the sale of each Do More: Water iron goes to The Samburu Project, a non-profit organization dedicated to helping communities in the Samburu district of Kenya have access to clean drinking water through the construction of new wells. The iron itself has two 1-inch ceramic plates, can go up to a whopping 410 degrees (for your most unruly strands!), and retails at $120.

Feeling lucky? Just do the following:

  1. Leave a comment telling us what your favorite reusable home item is (a milk carton-turned-flower vase, etc)
  2. Check back on Monday, May 4 to see who the lucky winner is (and keep an eye on your BlackPlanet notes – the winner might be YOU!)
  3. Stay tuned for upcoming giveaways!

GOOD LUCK!

xoxo,
Gift Gal

My favorite reusable item is a glass jar… like jam jars. i use them to store some of the natural concoctions that i make up for my hair. I also use them if I decide to make my own preserves or other food spreads. They’re also very good as a vase when you buy or are given fresh flowers. I also collect buttons with sayings and slogans on them and i use the glass jars to store them. I also use the glass jars to hold my pens and pencils and also use them as a bank for my loose change. They can be used for almost anything–they’re so multi-purpose. I use them for almost everything! So, needless to say, there are many glass jars randomly around my house… and the cool part about it is, you can decorate them by painting them, putting glitter on them, or applying stickers. They make a great decorating and arts and crafts project. OH! I also use them as candy jars and ocassionally, I’ll leave candy in them and sit it outside of my apartment door for the kids in the complex. Of course when I do that, all the candy ends up gone the next day and an empty glass jar is just sitting in front of my door! LOL.. but whatever… sorry, I got carried away… i love those jars!

My favorite reusable item is the good ol “WATER JUG”! I dont have to constantly spend money on new water jugs.. One or two will last me for months because I can go to the local grocery store and refill them. If I want a sweet drink, my containter goes from a water jug to a lemonade pitcher in under 60 seconds!! And suppose I feel the need to satisfy my green thumb? I can cut the jug in half and it can become a flower pot!! And lets not forget the portability. I can carry my water jug anywhere, and since its shelf-stable, it will last in the trunk of my car, just in case I need water or something for my engine. So many possibilities with just one jug. And after I have excersied all options with that jug, then its time for another before you know it. What an invention!!

My favorite reusable items are my human hair weaves and wigs. LOL. Honestly. They are very long lasting if you don’t out wear them which I do not. You can always bump them, curl them, wash them, mousse them up, and so many other things you can’t do with synthetic hair. I only wear my weaves for a matter of weeks. Maybe two or 3 at the most, then i usually go get it braided or wrapped or something similar to that. But they always come in handy, especially the human lace fronts when you don’t want to do your hair or you just dont have the time. I do not throw my hair in the trash except if it’s really old or if I found something better because for one..that crap is expensive and for two..where I live at up in the mountains, they don’t have the right hair up here and i can’t take a trip down to jersey or down to the city all the time to buy more so I make good with what I have. LOL. I’m so serious and if that’s not the answer you were looking for, I do reuse my milk gallons to make kool-aid and iced tea when my pitchers aren’t around to be found becuz someone stole it at the cookout. LOL.

My favorite resuable item is the plastic vegetable/fruit bags from the grocery store. I reuse them as sandwich bags and snack bags, to store new and leftover food items in the refrigerator, and as a plastic cap to cover my hair while deep conditioning or dying. I’m big on recycling and reusing many items, but the plastic vegetable bag from the grocer has the most uses in my household.

My favorite reusable household items are toilet paper and paper towel rolls. After the tissue is used, I collect them in a crate. When I gather 15 or more, I take them with me to work so that my kids and I can use them in Art (I teach Kindergarten). The last arts and crafts project we did using toilet paper rolls was constructing a white lamb for Easter. We took the roll vertically, glued white paper around it for the lamb’s body; cut out feet, hands, and a face to paste at the top, bottom, and on the sides of the “body”. It was cute and extremely easy to do!

My favorite reusable item around the house are the leftover peels from citrus fruit. Oranges, Lemons, and Grapefruit are the best! I place the peels at the bottom of my waste baskets to give any room a fruit filled scent. In the summer, I also combine citrus rinds with spring water to create my own fruity body splash.

I also usually do my own filtered water through my sink so I don’t waste money. On the top side, I try to recycle items that people just toss. I really enjoy reusing my set of dish plates instead of killing trees buying paper plates. =).
