joy bryant and Tyra

Is actress Joy Bryant throwing shade at Tyra Banks? The actress recently blogged about Tyra’s National Hair Day on Essence a few days ago and went in on Tyra, while celebrating her own weave. Joy wears a weave?? Who knew!!! I can usually spot a weave a mile away, but I had no clue Joy was part of the club.

Here’s what she posted:

National Real Hair Day? I missed that one…In fact, on National Real Hair Day, I was calling Extensions Plus in L.A. to make sure they had enough of the 20″ “relaxed roots” texture hair that I love oh so much (and that keeps selling out like crazy!), and making an appointment to get my hair, I mean, my weave, hooked up.

So Tyra, while I didn’t take part in your observance, I just want to say: “WOW!” You are such a brave woman for breaking the chains that bound you since your teenage years! What courage that took, for you to expose yourself to millions of people! Such fearlessness! Oh, how I wish I had the guts to do that. I guess I’m much too much of an insecure, self-loathing Negro for all that self-acceptance foolishness.

I’m glad we got down to solving the mystery of what’s under your lace-front, though. I mean seriously, it was “THE” question that has perplexed the world over. And now we see that there’s a beautiful head of hair underneath it all, hair that was surprisingly relaxed and ready for the world. Whodathunkit?!If I had the same length and fullness of hair that you have, I might take my weave out too.

Ha!!!! I’m just playing! Even if I DID have your “real” hair, I’d still be wearing a few tracks or clip-ons up in there.

Because I’m straight weave fo life, kid!!!

Ima ride ride wit this weave, die die with this weave!!

Take a look at Joy below:

…See, I loooooove taking new hair out of the bag, combing through it with my fingers, holding it up with my two hands, and burying my face in it. Mmmm, mmmm, mmm! Nothing like a new batch of zig-zag curly to get your self esteem out of the dumps! The feeling of getting my hair, I mean, my weave done over. I feel human again. I feel sexy. I feel powerful.

I can be whatever, whoever I want to be with the stroke of a sewing needle…

With long brown tresses and a tan, I’m Pocahontas, ’cause I got Indian in my family. With easy waves, I AM bohemian rhapsody goddess personified. And now that I got blond highlights! What!? I know I look like Beyonce! You can’t tell me nothing! Uh oh, uh oh…

Now I guess I can get help for my self-loathing addiction.I can learn to accept myself in my entirety. I can emancipate myself from that which keeps me locked-up. I can embrace the natural state of things.

Yup, I can do all of that…

But don’t hold your breath!

Joy Bryant loves Target

    I love it~ I’m a straight nappy natural!

No chemicals and only flat iron it when my “unbreakable comb” begins to break off in my hair : )

But this chick right here~ L-O-V-E her~ That was pure comdey and u know from her heart~

But I hope she doesn’t think that anyone is knocking wearing weaves, because now that winter is creeping it’s ugly head~ I will surley be in my head wraps and slap a phony pony in this mass of messiness from time to time.
I just hope this doesn’t turn into one of those, us vs them type of deals~

Because, truly, what makes us gorgeous and wonderful as black women, is the fact that we can wear our hair in any style. Rather it is our own hair, or hair on lease. Every texture, style, and color we can rock and that is what makes black women not only trend setters, but also envyed by so many others.

So, lets not “hate” on each other because we choose to go down differnt hair routs. Embrace our style differences and choices. We are to versitle and wonderous to go after each other because some of us rock tracks and some of us rock naps.

The only time I wear weave in my hair is when I get senegalese twists put in. However, I’m not knocking weaves at all. As long as it looks good and it’s not nappy as hell……do you!!

UUMMMM, Hello. I feel you Ms. Bryant!!! That was hilarious. Who says I dont love myself because I love to rock a weave here and there??? Im beautiful with or without it! But as a liscensed cosmetologist I know just how brutal styling can be to ur natural hair. Why should I settle for the kinky curly look alone when I can have bone straight one day and full bouncy curls the next, or flawless full bangs one week and evenly length hair the next….without the damage or cut to my own natural hair???? Its for fun and change, and while I damage the weave, my hair is beautiful and healthy underneath. N I wear my hair and a weave…n trust it always looks good. N for those that dont knw…PLEASE educate urself! Weave was created for white women and men back to date in the medievel times. White women have been wearing weaves much longer than African American women. So this whole blacks dont love themselves is bull$%#@!!!!! Black women have just made their own trends with it, like Black people do with everything else! Paris Hilton, Jennifer Lopez, Brittany Spears, Christina Aguilera and so on also weave a weave!!!!!!!

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/BlackCasper2001/ BlackCasper2001

If Joy Bryant loves weaves that is her b-i but why does she have to dog someone for having the courage to show their real hair? That don’t make a lick of sense. Tyra got past insecurity and shared something very personal with her fans. Why hate on that?

this woman seems a little upset about the outcome of Tyra’s hair. What, she thought she was bald headed under her wig? Is this what she was hoping? LOL Takes a WHOLE lot more to make a woman than hair. That’s just the top covering…

ok what was the whole point of joy writing this “blog”….how is she to hate on tyra banks….i never knew she wore a weave because her hair always looks no natural,so her but hey, thats hollywood for you.fake as hell…..everybody has their opinions and i can respect that but she needs to respect tyra’s opinion as well…..theres no right or wrong answer about this….her hair isnt what people want to know most about ms banks….its her boobs and hell she even did a show about that too…had her breast examined and then proved to the world that her s**t is real…..maybe thats what tyra is doing….bringing truth to all of these speculations about her and about other woman….dont hate….thats so messy….grow up….agree to disagree….

So Obviously Tyra needs to bring the “Mean Girls” episode back. Joy Tyra was trying to make a statement about what her hair really is like, and also if you followed any of her shows on natural hair, to bring awareness to black women, who feel ashamed of their own hair….i agree myself that Tyra real hair isn’t much different than her wigs, It wasn’t like the Oprah reveal of what her real hair was like on Twitter, but still why is this girl Joy even talking, she needs to work or something all that personal blogging shows too much time on ur hands especially paragraphs of thought out sarcasm….Next show on Tyra needs to be why Black girls hate on each other so much. I love my sistas! Weave, natural, nappy, straight, short, long, bald!

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/CaliFemme23/ CaliFemme23

Always a NOBODY hatin on a somebody….she wrote an essay on weave..wtf i say…..If you’re gong to bang on Tyra Banks, go for the whole ‘Gay rights is the new civil rights movement’ topic she loves to talk about on every other show, like gays and lesbians have it as bad as black people do….thats a REAL issue.

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/qadavis/ qadavis

Seems as if Joy is hating because she’s bald as hell! And not by choice. Get over it, and take time to worry about your own head instead of Tyra’s. And maybe, just maybe, you might be able to take your weave out without scaring small children too!

SINCE WHEN HAS HAVING AN OPPOSING OPINION BEEN HATING!!!
I think some ppl are missing the point, Joy wasnt hating on Tyra at all, She was clearly being sarcastic about the notion that because black women wearing weave is a self hate issue.. And its obvious that she disagrees with tyra about that. she clearly stated that most women wear weave because they dont want to have the same look all the time and weave makes it easier to change stlyes not beacuse she hates her hair and who she is…I have 4 sisters with very beautiful hair but they wear weave, and im damn sure they dont wear it because they hate who they are.. White women wear just as much weave as black women so is it a self hate thing with them too??. In my humble opinion if Tyra wanted to go down that road, like Joy pointed out, if would of made more sense to talk about “PERMS”

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/Shamel_/ Shamel_

Hair has been a topic of discussion for “ethnic” women for decades now…this is nothing new. I actually was amused by what Joy said. Although I don’t wear weave I can respect where she is coming from. I am all for versatility…that is exactly why I am dying my hair back midnight black ;). Change is good and people embrace “change” for different reasons. I agree with the brother below…a variance in opinions leave room for good debate. Let’s not put the label “HATE” (or hater) on evrery damn thing!!! Geez!! Maybe Tyra wanted to go back to her “roots” (no pun intended) because she is entering a different phase in her life. I ain’t mad at that either….DO YOU!!!

Joy bryant sounds like a hoodrat, and Tyra is stupid.Enough said

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/courtneyR/ courtneyR

Whats tragic about this entire thing is,when black women with long hair are automatically accused of rocking a weave. Not every african american woman with long hair has a weave.Although no one is complaining about women that do rock weaves, not all of us do.I applauded Tyra for showing that side of her.Their was nothing wrong with it at all.Hell, she had her natural hair first before she ever put a weave in it in the first place. So their is nothing wrong with going back to what is naturally hers.I’ve never rocked a weave in my life and Im proud of that. But its always assumed that all of this on my head is a weave.T.V has everyone screwed up.We are living in a world more than ever people rocking fake body parts.Again, their is nothing wrong with it but dont ASSUME that because alot of people are rocking the artificial,we all are taking part in it.To assume that we all do,especially from our own men is dead wrong. Some of us dont even rock perms anymore.A hot comb is good enough. At some point,a woman decides to embrace her natural side and that is a personal journey for each one of us at the time that its right for us.I’m a bit surprised at Joy because I thought she was a bit more intelligent than this. All Tyra was getting at is that its ok to rock your own.Nothing more nothing less. Not all women rock WEAVES because they have a self hate issue. But their are women that do.Hell, she did a show on black women who permed their daughters hair as young as 2 or 3 years old.Did you guys see that one? How tragic that when Tyra was asking the children what they didnt like about their own natural hair that GOD gave them, all the kids said the same thing.”ITS NAPPY” I want my hair like Hannah Montana etc. Some of these little girls are mad to feel that their is something wrong with them and their hair because it different.Thats wrong. So for Tyra to embrace her own isnt a threat to women who still want to rock weaves.

It would of been nice to see Joy say to Tyra,I applaud what you are doing. But I guess thats to much to ask to give another woman a positive compliment for doing something that isnt a threat to anyone just an enhancement to one beauty. Some black women always have to say something negative about another woman instead of uplifting or saying something positive.Always have to find something wrong with another female first right to make yourself feel like your better than someone else. And thats the truth..I say, grow up.

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/1_AND_ONLY_YONNIE/ 1_AND_ONLY_YONNIE

courtneyR I saw that episode whith them little kids on there.(SMH) Their mothers don’t understand they are not only damaging those kids hair but also their self-esteem(saying the kids hair is nappy) because they don’t want to take the time to learn how to deal with different textures of hair. There was even a woman on there saying she didn’t want black kids because she didn’t was a nappy head child! WTF?

As for people wearing weaves: All of them are NOT bald. Some wear it to change up the style of their hair, to add fullness, or while they’re transitioning to Natural hair(no more perms). So that needs to stop because of seen people from all races add some type of weave to their hair!

Chicks with hair weave and sh1t is a big turn off for me. I want a woman with long or short hair as long as its real. Do the math, when you wear hair weave its like having on a cap and I feel that it is unsanitary. Ladies if you want a man then use natural beauty and I garantee that you will have the man that you want.

LOL OMG I love when people do smart alec sarcastic stuff like this. she totally jacked trya. it is soo true. Trya did come out the first day of her ‘no weave season’ with pre-straightened hair, then made a big deal of the audience coming down and rubbing into her scalp to be sure there were no tracks. if she wanted to cast away her chains so much, then she should have went sans- chemical treatment/hot combs/flat irons (whatever she used).

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/1_AND_ONLY_YONNIE/ 1_AND_ONLY_YONNIE

Sounds like a few fellas are bitter over dating chicks with TACKY weave!

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/Peninsulachick/ Peninsulachick

I guess this was an interesting article…There was a period in time, I believe, that the main reason that black women wore weave was self-loathing, brought upon us by mainstream (white) society, as well as our own brainwashed men. They were conditioned to desire all that the white man possessed, and, when he (the black man) found himself beset on all sides, and hampered in his efforts to achieve, he settled on the ONE thing that they could achieve that white men tried vainly to stop: having a white woman. This left us (black women) on the outside, the fringes, of society. We needed a medium with which to compete, and we have gone to great lengths to achieve the Euro standard of beauty, while decrying our intrinsic appeal. But no more. Happily, those days are behind us. Black women now are motivated by self-acceptance. No longer do we weave as a means of camouflaging our “blackness”..Rather, we utilize it to enhance our innate beauty, and highlight our many beautiful facets. We are magnificent, and blessed, black women. Funny, but many on this site believe that weave is a black woman’s “thing”. What you obviously have never considered is where the idea came from. There are non-black women in this world who struggle with self-loathing, just as there are non-black women who want to highlight and enhance their beauty. YES, WHITE WOMEN SET IT OFF!!! I was watching a rerun of an old Dolly Parton variety show, and as part of her opening monologue, she would joke about her relationship with her then-husband. Her biggest joke is that she would, without shame, threaten to beat him with her wig for one reason or another! OMG! Black men, what does this mean? This revelation that WHITE WOMEN WEAR WEAVE means that you have to rethink your WHOLE defamatory diatribe directed at your beautiful, weave-wearing sisters. Weave: it isn’t just for sistas anymore (or ever)lol..BTW, for thekid1986, the fact that you have made the choice to no longer date black women based on a cosmetic choice relieves me greatly. Black women now have one less fool to try to avoid on the path the GOOD man that awaits her (race unimportant). I do, however, feel sorry for my white sisters everywhere. Hopefully, they’ll smell the foul stench of your own self-loathing and side-step you. Seems that you’re a pretty deep, hopeless, pit of an individual. That’s a loss to the poor unsuspecting white woman who gets the booby prize that is you. SMH..Their (white women) loss…

REMEMBER OUR HAIR GROWS. OUR EFFORTS SHOULD BE RETENTION FOCUSED.

RETAIN YOUR LENGTH USING MOISTURE. We have THE MOST FRAGILE HAIR ON THE PLANET! Our hair is prone to breakage ! ! ! If you are processed, insure that you are protein/moisture balanced. Natural ladies insure that you stay moisturized.

Ladies, my Sistas, we can grow our hair out to BSL (bra strap length, MBL, Mid Back Length) and beyond…..It’s about moisture. We have THE MOST FRAGILE HAIR ON THE PLANET! Our hair is naturally prone to breakage. We can grow it long though. MOISTURE MOISTURE MOISTURE MOISTURE. Whether you are processed or natural, texlaxed, or transitioning, your hair can grow 6 inches per year. When you get that new growth, that is evidence that your hair is growing indeed. Why are we not seeing more length? RETENTION!
    .
No one has ever tried to really teach us b/c to be honest….we have always been told (by multiple sources) that our hair won’t grow. NOT TRUE.
Have you ever seen bruhs in the hood with 10-12 inch afros, when they take those plaits or braids out??…it’s b/c they do not constantly manipulate their hair. Heating tools that fry the hair to death. Not to mention blow “fryers”. They are not using products that dry their hair out constantly, like we do. Extensions, and weaves that are not retention friendly can kill our retention. The sebum (natural oil in hair and skin) does not make it down the entire strand of our hair type. Where ever that sebum stops…that’s where the hair breaks. It’s true. Look it up.

    1. Instead of shampoo, use Apple cider Vinegar, and or Baking Soda (the cleaning agents in shampoos/sulfites and sulfates are too drying for our hair type, also the same agents used in just about any detergent.) Instead Co-Wash (conditioner wash) there are some cleaning properties in conditioners. When you want to get rid of all film and residue use baking soda….It works I promise it does. For those who are psychologically attached to bubbles use very little, and be certain the product is a MOISTURIZING SHAMPOO. When you do use a shampoo of any kind your NEXT STEP SHOULD BE PUTTING MOISTURE BACK INTO YOUR HAIR. SAME GOES FOR AFTER YOU DO A LIGHT OR HEAVY PROTEIN TREATMENT.

Please DO NOT USE PRODUCTS THAT HAVE MINERAL OIL, AND PETROLEUM. Why? b/c these products act as saran wrap…nothing gets in or out. Further it adds nothing healthful to your hair. It suffocates your hair. Just b/c a product in an Asin beauty supply say “Afro or African” does not mean it is good for our hair type. No alcohol at all. (all alcohols are not created equally). Some alcohols are fatty and are not damaging to our hair.

    2. Moisturize with Aloe vera Juice, rosewater, or even S-Curl activater, Vegetable Glycerin is a great moisturizer. Silken child from Sallys. Bottom line Moisturize !!!

    3. Seal in the moisture (same concept as using baby oil when you get out of your shower) 100% unrefined Shae Butter, and seal the ends after moisturizing nightly. Unrefined coconut oil, Jojoba oil, green avocado oil, or green olive oil.
Coconut oils penetrates the cuticle. Jooba oil is most like sebum, natural oil that’s in our scalp..

    4. OIL IS NOT MOISTURE. GREASING YOUR SCALP ALONE DOES NOTHING for your hairs cuticle. Which is important to retain length.

    5. Cutting your hair regularly does not make it grow faster. Well there is no scientific evidence to prove it. Hair seems to grow faster when it’s been cut, but it’s the growth phases and duration of those phases that dictate growth. It’s true look it up. Growth, resting, shedding. A lot of hair dressers are also responsible for keeping our hair short. Go in for a trim come out with a cut…That’s foul.

    6. Processed sistas, do not overlap your relaxer. Use a light healthy oil on your previously relaxed hair, BEFORE YOU RELAX . Only relax the new growth. OVER PROCESSED HAIR BREAKS!

REMEMBER OUR HAIR GROWS…..OUR EFFORTS SHOULD BE RETENTION FOCUSED.
THESE TIPS WORK. THEY REALLY DO. I WAS SKEPTICAL TOO. I DID NOT BELIEVE MY HAIR WOULD GROW PAST NECK LENGTH. INSIDE ONE YEAR I WENT FROM NL(neck length) TO APL ( armpit length) in 10 months.

REMEMBER OUR HAIR GROWS…..OUR EFFORTS SHOULD BE RETENTION FOCUSED.

Ima say it like this, I LOVE WEAVE ! And FYI IT HAS NEVER COME BETWEEN ME AND GETTIN A MAN !

I have naturally long thick hair, but unfortuantely America has set a “Beauty standard” that brain-washed black women into thinking that our natural hair texture is less than appealing ! That being the case A LOT OF BLACK WOMEN STRAIGHTEN OUR HAIR ! When this happens typically our hair tends to get thinner, break off and what not. So mostly to prevent this.. MOST WEAR WEAVE !
If u don’t like it BLAME IT ON THE FASHION INDUSTRY, OR DONE’T WEAR IT…
I personally don’t have a problem with it. I love it even tho it’s expensive, it would cost more to wear it “natural” and straightened… WE DON’T ALL HAVE MONEY LIKE OPRAH TO KEEP OUT ISH LIKE HERS ! SHE IS ROCKING IT !

Fuk joy bryant, i LOVE girls who waer natural styles, its sexy as hell. This is the type of woman actually worth dating and marrying.

Girls who wear natural styles usally have MUCH better personalities than girls who wear weaves an extensions, and if you need a ‘bag of FAKE hair’ to get yourself esteem up that jus shows how worthless and contemporary you are to begin with. A woman who wears natural is TRUELY secure in who and what she is without the fake ‘pick me ups’ weave wearers need, and they are usually one of a kind type women(I kno some of them who are weak minded too), CONFIDENT without being plain out bytches, plus they are usually intelligent which is why they made the choice to go natural, that is SOO attractive.

Down with the modern weave wearers, if you look at their mentality and style from a man’s view its no wonder why divorce an jus plain out not marrying them is the norm. I want a CLASSIC, a CLASSY, NATURALLY BEAUTIFUL woman.

    @quitabby09 & lustful

stop hatin that dude not funny lookin, but you right even though yall black girls ont really appreciate him i bet if he kicked it at a mix croud club an he got some style about hisself he could get at plenty FIONE azz latina girls, who to be real ina lotta cases nowadaze have even more bangin bodies than blacks girls but similar flavor, asian girls and white girls, cuz they usually go fr the darker black dudes, as long as you respectable got style keep yourself up an you not jus FUKED in the face you can have inz

Welll, personally, I love women with hair, straight, “nappy”, “bald”, weaved in etc but mind you…..my sisters, mother, aunts etc. all have natural hair that to some would appear to be of the ‘White” type because it was long and straight but on others in my family, was what some would term “nappy.” All in all, I appreciate a woman who takes care of her looks and is proud regarldess of what SOME people view as good hair, as we have a mix in my family. I will even go further to state that I am attracted to women with “weaves” as long as they don’t let the weave define them…. much like fake colored eyes as I realize women go to the extent to be pleasing and presentable to us men…..I LOVE BLACK WOMEN FOR WHAT THEY DO FOR US MEN…..MUCH RESPECT as you go out of your way for us…… Just don’t fake it as if ……and do be real about it—no problems………….

XXOO To all my sisters regardless of how you wear your hair….just be real about it cause I KNOW you are trying to be attractive to me as a Black man…..

I love her, I had no idea Joy was so funny! Unbeweaveable!

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/arozendaghetto/ arozendaghetto

Wow, ^5 to Joy on speaking out about that whole Tyra Banks episode. I used to be a fan of Tyra Banks. Beautiful person, classy. Enjoyed how down to earth she seemed on America’s Next Top Model AT FIRST. I know she’s was the typical diva as most supermodels are. Having a sister who worked as a model, I know all too well how self edifying and overly dramatic they can be.

To echo on a last posting I did about a previous article about this subject, it is Tyra Banks frequent, overly spontaneous attitude that made her look less and less classy with each outburst on her talk show: “Hey everybody, guess what? This is really gonna make your day! I’m taking my weave out! Look, my hair is as long and as straight as the weave! Yes! Who in the audience wants to come up and feel my REAL hair?”…. “Hey little pageant girls! Insecure about yourselves? Well look at my picture. This is me without my make up! Wow, see that? Yeah, I look perfect even without my makeup!”…”Oh my gawsh, I have Janet Jackson on my show sitting on my couch. Oh look at her butt. Janet, can you stand up so the people can see your butt? Do you mind, JANET, if I squeeze your BUTT? Gee, my butt isn’t made like your butt. Why is that, JANET?”

It’s these impulsive remarks Tyra Banks says that just put me out with her. Although she does have some good topics on her show, as do Oprah, but its like nails on a chalkboard afterwhile. Tyra has these self acceptance shows to build women and young girls up yet her own insecurities of having to prove herself as perfect all the time is contradicting her so-called plight to raise their self esteem. I won’t be surprised if some of these women and young girls leave her studio feeling worse than when they first came in.

Oprah’s another one with her constant bragging about all the good deeds she’s done and all the focus on rich people getting some of their luxuries taken from them because of the recession. How often did she actually focus on the REAL VICTIMS of poverty? I’m talking about inner city families and women struggling to overcome the recession they’ve been in since the Bush years? Oprah does all the fake “uh huh, gurrll” talk but when really was the last time she’s ever bragged about mentoring young black women in America to become prosperous in their own lives and communities? I see she set up a school in AFRICA which is great… but what about here in America? Tyra’s case is the need to prove she is an “Debutante Black” while Oprah being the “Elite Black” she is is stuck on the need to keep her earplugs renewed so she won’t have to hear the cries of poverty in every ghetto throughout America.

FU.Ck celebrating a WEAVE. Black women for SO LONG have allowed WHITE AMERIKKKA to dictate BEAUTY. SO WHAT IS BEAUTY? Someone told me it was subjective. ANyway. I think its SAD AND PATHETIC…

I WOULD NEVER WEAR A WEAVE MUCH LESS CELEBRATE IT. SMDH

Making us ALL look like desperate baldheaded Black women… IM tired of people asking me if my hair is a weave because of you BLack B!tches!

There is a sista that I work with you has beautiful super long dreads. They suit her just fine. I wonder where all that hair would have gone he she decided to “weave it” instead of ACHIEVE IT!

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/nina3977/ nina3977

i think that the topic of straight hair vs. natural hair goes much deeper then just style and fashion…. and if this blog was truly written by joy bryant then she has proven that it is a topic that most black women are really not ready to have… if you choose to wear you hair straight or natural that is truly your own business… but why must you belittle someone elses journey if trya banks has decided that she no longer wants to wear weave then why not say congrats to you and let it be…women who wear weave are no better then women who wear natural and women who wear naturals are no better then women who wear weaves…. the question should be “what is with all the cattyness?”… i mean really!!!!…. joy is on a blog sounding very b***hy… she is not saying hey i like wearing weave i think “I” look good in them… she is down grading every thing that tyra is trying to do and mocking her…. joy is a beautiful black woman in the public eye why not say something to uplift your race in some way instead of trying to throw salt on someone else journey…. and anyone that would say tv,movie, and music stars are just regular folks and dont have any influence on how people think and act should just read the posts that follow Joy’s blog u can see the same cattyness… instead of just disagreeing people are on this blog posting comments that tear down other people… other people that you dont even know… i hope that it comes out that this post was not written by joy bryant cause if it i have lost some respect for her… wear your weave and be happy if that is what makes you happy but dont hate on someone else

    PEACE, LOVE, AND HAIR GREASE

    MoniQTee… I’m so d*mn glad you posted that comment! • http://www.blackplanet.com/nina3977/ nina3977

    @ the_epitome_of
if your not happy with who YOU are putting in weave OR taking it out wont solve that problem trust… this topic is deeper then just wear a fro and now you are a true sistah…. there are plenty of black women out there with locs and twists and fros that still dont love themselves… you wanna know why it was so easy for white people to come in and tell us that nappy aint pretty and black aint beautiful is because we cant muster up enough concern to care for one another… we cant tell each we are beautiful… you have brothers and sisters on this blog talkin str8 dirty about those who wear weaves and vice versa…. love your people with locs, with relaxed, with straight, with nappy, with light skin, with dark skin, with freckles, with pimples, with hazel eyes, with brown eyes, with sandy red hair, with coal black hair, love your people 1st up lift your sisters and then maybe they will lift themselves up….

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/DR_RS/ DR_RS

I’ve read everyones comments and what seems to initially got everyone all riled up was the TITLE of the article. It set everyone up to believe that they had to choose a side like we’re crips and bloods lol. The article is very devisive and that’s the bigger issue in our community. If the article would have said something like “Joy Bryant has a weave and self esteem to go with it” we would’nt think she was “going in on Tyra.” Blk women attacking other blk women for THEIR choices is a waste of time and foolish and I do not believe that is what Joy was trying to do. If you hate or love weaves but manage to still have self esteem then set an example and volunteer at your local community center to teach little black girls about loving themselves and help them focus on important things like whats IN their heads instead of ON their heads. Many of you all seem to be passionate about the topic so make a difference and uplift our youth! I, like most of the ladies who commented love both natural hair and weaves and I wear both. We are the most diverse race of ppl and our hair reflects that, and it’s a BEAUTIFUL thing! EMBRACE IT!!!!

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/the_epitome_of/ the_epitome_of

Nina… I’ve always uplifted my black women… However, I do not possess the power to give a grown woman self-esteem… People need to learn how to accept themselves by themselves first… period! I know you may be speaking in general but…. me personally, I don’t fit in the category of self hatred… I love everything about the black woman (whether she’s dark/light with pimples …etc) but the weave is the issue at hand… A lot of women allow the “weave” to define who they are… and it’s sad… Because once you put that madness in your head ladies, it becomes the most important/cherished part of your body(which really isn’t you)… I just feel like it gets in the way…

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/nina3977/ nina3977

Epitome…. i am sure that your heart is in the right place… i am not saying that anyone should give anyone self-esteem that isnt even possible… u can do things to boost someones self-esteem but you cant give some one self – esteem … to me (and this is my personal opinion)…. but, the topic of this blog is weave but the ISSUE is the propaganda that makes black women AND men think that their own beautiful self is not acceptable… i agree that no woman should let a weave define who she is …. but you shouldnt let a fro define you either… your hair should not define… we need to be defined by our history our ancestors our legacy our children…. i dont agree with weaves or with relaxing your hair… but i wasnt born thinking that… and i didnt grow up thinking that… it wasnt until i was enlightened by another sister that i started to question why i was doing what i was doing to myself… u (not just you but you in general) can voice your views against weave but why not do it with love instead of animosity

oh yeah and P.S. the music on ur page is jammin

on a real side though……the weave just makes you look fake and phony…..and it looks pathetic…..it’s nothing more than a wig glued onto your hair or tracks or extensions……it just makes some women look pathetically…..why can’t they just be theirselves with their natural hairstyle…..cause the weave is just nothing more than pathetic at it’s best, cause it makes you to be something that you’re not and unfortunatly a lot of women I see on here are like that!!!!!!

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/Spongebobfiness09/ Spongebobfiness09

Me personally i’m going to wear what i want to wear and that’s that, i was raised in a home where our family taught us to think for ourselves, so on that note, i don’t like full head weaves because the sh*t looks fake, the sh*t be glossy one day and dusty the next, unless you get the rare occasions where you find that one stylist who can really work some magic and make the stuff look real, and on the next note, why should we not use weave, so if i want some pink in my hair, i should risk damaging it when i could just go get a track or two, please, and on the final note, i love me some natural hair, it to me is the most beautiful thing, but people need to rock what they gonna rock and let other people do them in peace, everybody always got something to say about what someone else is doing and that’s the problem

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/sylkiifeather/ sylkiifeather

lmao, it seems that EVERY story on here gets turned into something about white girls vs black girls. i thought that people who wear weave did it to either grow out their hair, or for beauty reasons. i mean, there are black women whose hair is so short naturally that they cant really rock a cute hair style. personally, i have found that wearing my real hair is much better because i dont have to spend so much d*mn money on weave. and i also choose to keep my hair cut to a short length. length shouldnt matter. there are plenty of beautiful women with short hair. i used to believe that long hair was the best, until i saw how i looked with shorter hair. but weave shouldnt make you have more confidence in yourself.

1_AND_ONLY_YONNIE That episode of those little girls was so heartbreaking.I wanted to go through the tv screen and ask the mothers of those little beautiful black girls,”who told you that their was something wrong with you and your hair”? the mothers were doing more damage to their daughters because they didnt no any better themselves. And just to prove my point, one of the little girls had super duper long hair past her back.remember her? and she was getting teased for having that much natural hair that looked pressed. Her mother should be telling her daughter that theirs is nothing wrong with it.leave your hair alone, dont let anyone touch your hair at all.your a LITTLE GIRL.GO SOMEWHERE AND PLAY.let them tease you.they will be sorry in the long run.Like my mother did with me.What im getting at is this, most black girls come into this world with a head full of hair, somewhere during this time, their mothers just like those mothers on tyra that day, start to process their hair way to young to get it straight. My first and last perm was at 17.i had so much of it and played sports,i couldnt handle it myself.i grew out the perm at 21.my grandmother while she was alive sat me down and told me why i should take it out and what she said made sense to me.if i need to manage it,i hot comb it or braid it.So what im getting at is this, what many black women do to each other,by putting one another down,is the same thing many mothers do to their daughters and they dont even realize it.letting your hair and body parts develop means being closer to nature for alot of women.

Is their anything wrong with wearing a weave, wig, whatever to change up your style?of course not.it becomes a problem with self esteem when girls that grow into women are made to feel like their is something wrong with what GOD GAVE YOU so you have to get someone elses.thats when it becomes a problem.INSTEAD OF LISTENING TO PEOPLE AND TELLING PEOPLE TO KISS OUR ASS,people try to make you feel that theirs something wrong with you when their isnt. They only do those things BECAUSE THEY ARE JEALOUS OF WHAT YOU MAY HAVE period.
Was i teased about my hair growing up? of course.I went to an all white elementary school. So of course I felt out of place.but my mother always told me,this is you, they are them.you are not them.you are you.so im going to braid your hair and fix it the way i want to.she always said dont let anyone touch your head unless its me.when i got 16,my bestfriend decided to cut all of her long natural hair.hers was longer than mine and she was of haitian descent.im african american,CHEROKEE INDIAN.like many of us from the deep south.so we have the ability to grow long hair.i asked her if she really wanted to do that and she did.she wanted that halle berry cut when halle first came out.now if i was a follower,i would of done the same but i remembered what mom said.dont touch your hair.let it grow.LET THESE LITTLE GIRLS GROW UP NATURALLY AND STOP RUSHING THEM INTO WOMANHOOD SO WHEN THEY GET TO WOMANHOOD,THEY HAVE THEIR OWN UNIQUE LOOK.ITS BEST TO BE THE NERD YOUNG,THE NOT TO POPULAR GIRL YOUNG AND BE BEAUTIFUL WHEN THEY GET OLDER.

STOP LISTENING to these dumb asses out here WHO CANT EVEN MANAGE THEIR OWN LIVES. let these little girls be little girls so they can have a running start when they are older.Again ,nothing wrong with people who rock weaves etc,but dont get mad at women who have natural long hair when we all hit womanhood. We all make our choices. It bothers me when people assume that we are all fake.
Someone said that TYRA was bragging by having the audience come up and rub her scalp to check.I CAN SAY THAT ONE TIME I WAS ON A BUS COMING FROM THE CITY.THEIR WERE 3 BLACK GIRLS ON THE BUS.THEY WERE EYEING ME,SO OF COURSE I HAD TO THINK THIS COULD BE A PROBLEM BECAUSE THEY LOOKED LIKE THEY WANTED TO JUMP ME.WHEN WE GOT TO THE STOP,THEY CAME UP TO ME AND ONE OF THEM WAS LIKE”CAN I ASK U A ?” I WAS LIKE YEAH,SO HOMEGIRL BUSTED OUT AND SAID,WE MADE A BET THAT YOUR HAIR ISNT YOURS BUT ONE OF THEIR FRIENDS BELIEVED IT WAS ALL MINE.SO I WAS RELIEVED BECAUSE I WASNT GOING TO BE JUMPED..LOLSO THEY WERE LIKE,CAN WE FEEL YOUR SCALP?I WAS LIKE YEAH,ITS MINE.SO THEY DID RIGHT,AND THE GIRL THAT BELIEVED IT WAS ALL MINE WAS LIKE “I TOLD YOU” WHERE Y 5 DOLLARS?” I WAS LAUGHING SO HARD CUZ THEY ACTUALLY MADE ME SMILE.BUT THIS IS HOW we look at each other.Im just saying ,just dont assume.

It saddens me to see mothers doing this to their daughters. Its time to start building up young black girls and making them feel that they are the baddest and that thier is nothing wrong with what they have.To make to world respect you and make these men respect you.And if they cant do that, then tell them to scram.Im not going to rock anything artifical because some of our men think that we are not good enough naturally. The complex isnt with you,its with them. They will see that as they get older as well. You get down with the ones that want to be down with you.No matter what the color.

My natural hair was long and then I cut it and every now and then I wear a weave….I’m beautiful natural and with weave….personally I think people should stop hating….hair is hair and if you aint paying for it thats even better…I have friends from all races and every now and then they wear weaves too…weave is like jewlery or make-up…meant to enhance a look…women enjoy your weaves or your natural hair if you prefer but don’t hate or think its wrong because someone likes the opposite of you…were are all beautiful so love each other and yourselves…Peace…Plus my hair grows faster with a sew-in then being natural….the heat and everything else slows the growth of the natual hair…just a little insight for those who think otherwise….much love

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/MzBgLgz/ MzBgLgz

I think I’m coming into this discussion a tad late, but I happened to be home – looking @ Tyra’s show – the day she focussed on “real hair”. This is silly. I thought we had better things to stess over. Unfortunately, I have expereinced this silliness 1st hand. My mother (who happened to be blonde w/ grayish brown eyes) was Cherokee and Irish. My sister and I ended up with (mis-matched) coloring. I have eyes that changed from medium brown to gray to black when I am angry. I also have long, thick, naturally curly light brown/blonde hair. My skin is caramel – naturally people assume weave and dye. My sister kept her naturally curly med-light brown hair cut close. Our daughters inherited the same “mis-matched coloring” – My daughter is very dark (like her dad) with long, thick reddish hair and my neice is a few shades darker than myself w/ long, thick brown/blonde hair. I have been on this earth many moons and in that time I have had Black women accuse me of wearing a weave, a wig, whatever and dying my hair for attention (?????). I have had Caucasian women tell me my hair is pretty and the dyed color compliments my skin tone (?????), I had had older Asian women walk up and grab my hair only to be shocked because it is mine. And it’s not just females – I, much to my chagrim, have had Black men get upset with me because I was “trying to trick a man” or “foolin’ myself by trying to be white” or any number of other asinine things because 1) If you aren’t my hairdresser or my man you have no business “feeling” my scalp or hair; 2) I do not need to prove anything to anyone – nor does any woman in my family; 3) The women in my family were raised to believe the only opinion that matters is God and self.
To sum it up, if I, at the ripe old age of 56, can rock a short skirt or tight jeans with the best of them; Am mistakened for my 36-y-o daughter’s friend, sister or step-mother; Still have men rushing to open doors, offering to pump my gas and going out of their way to get my attention – whether your hair or mine is “home-grown” or not is irrelevant.

I did it because that’s what I wanted to do….and some days, I want a different look so I go buy it and get it sewn in…SO WHAT?! GET OVER IT ALREADY PEOPLE. That’s what’s wrong with people today…too worried about what others are doing instead of minding our own business and working on our individual selves. If you love weave…do the damn thing! If weave isn’t your thing…do YOUR damn thing, but stop worrying so much about what the other is doing!! UGH!

I can go either way with this issue and have. I have rocked my natural texture (no chemicals), curled hair, permed hair, dayum near no hair, weaved hair and wigs. Hair to me is just an accessory. I can live with it or without it. I wear different styles because I like to change it up and keep it interesting. I do not see how that is a problem. I am a strong Black woman who loves me and because I may choose to wear straight long hair does not mean I have been brainwashed by “society” in some way. Oh yeah and people have asked why do women allow hair to make them feel confident. I do not necessarily believe the “hair” makes them feel confident but it in their opinion it makes them look good which in turn makes them feel good which gives them confidence.

Hmmmmmm, so many different ways to look at this. I just have two things to throw in this discussion: 1) sounds like J. Bryant took this one to heart. I wonder why? and 2) I was once told, “I’d rather know people with processed hair and a natural mind, than people with natural hair and a processed mind!”

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/mrbluesays/ mrbluesays

Black women have NO idenity in the USA, black women hate themselves they wear wigs and weaves and contacts to look like fake white women…I love my black women black…..women of color look better with some curl….Black women hot comb the hell out of there hair then they are scared of rain and water….when black women use chemicles and hot combs no one is getting any sex because of fear of sweating their hair back to natural… What is Wendy Williams??? and Lil Kim looks more frightening than cute….and Tyra Banks looks like a white girl thats been the tanning salon so long she got burnt all over….and Latoya Jackson’s nose is so pointy she can open cans with it…And Serena Williams under a blond wig NO!!!! stop that wig head Karen Brown of Yeadon look…at this point black little girls have no real role models to look up to…little black girls think they must have a collection of wigs, which messes up the selfesteem of black girls. Little black girls with wigs on look like hoochies and attract much older men then you get children having babys..ie baby mama drama…then they go on Maury Povich making fools of themselves looking for the baby daddy… Or they go on Jerry Springer and throw wigs all over the stage making white people laugh at them not with them. I love a natural woman of color. all other embarrass me YUCK!

This is to those who think that because a black woman wears weave she wants to be white! That’s a bunch of bull s**t! First off we are not the only ones that wear weaves, wigs, perms, and contacts, however we are the only ones that are closely being scrutinized for it! I have white friends that do wear weave so don’t just single one race out for it. Than people be acting like white people are the only ones with long shiny hair, what about the Latino’s, Indians, and Chinese chicks! What, do they not matter because they are minority? So who’s to say what we tryna be? Every woman does something to embellish their looks. Almost every woman would chose a pair of contacts over a pair of glasses any day! So if anything we aint tryna be like any one else, we have our own style, fashion, and looks, why do you think people consider us the most diverse! We may be a little insecure about our hair but that doesn’t automatically mean we wonna be white! Everyone who says that they don’t have insecurities are lying to themselves! What about the MF’s with the fake boobs and ass, what she tryna be, or the chick that need a tan? Or the man who uses his money as an extension of his………. I say no more!

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/DeeVee8/ DeeVee8

All that sarcasm from such a famous person! (and yes, that was more of it there!) If she really said that, what I would like to know is, why is she taking Tyra’s National Real Hair day so damned personal? Is it because she really isn’t doing anything with herself now? This is one way to call attention to yourself!

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/1_AND_ONLY_YONNIE/ 1_AND_ONLY_YONNIE

@mrblue you are complete ja(ka$$, a woman from any race or backround shouldn’t want anything to do with you. Black woman hate themselves because they wear wigs, weave, and contacts to look like white women? That is some dumb $h!t to say! We all bleed the same color and do some of the same things. So stop making it about Black vs White!

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/SIZE14EEE/ SIZE14EEE

Not jumping on the Tyra bandwagon, cause I actually am not that crazy abut her, I still have to say that she NEVER said that all Black women who wear weaves have low self esteem or identity issues. BUT, you have to look at it from an over all view, would Tyra Banks, be “TYRA BANKS” had she been walking around with a buzz cut like Erika Badu? Even though her body was banging and her face is pretty, would she have graced so many magazine cover, or sold so much lingerie for Victoria If she had the baby afro Like Florida Evans? THis Joy Bryant chick , would she have had the mediocre career she has if she had the baby dreds? ( hell the only decent movie she had a decent role in was Antwon Fisher)
At the end of the day what it boils down to is what the masses idea of what a WOMAN, black or white, is supposed to look like and out of all the things that women have to try to match up to , A WOMAN’S HAIR is almost as much a part of her WOMANHOOD as her breast. Thanks to society, a woman without hair is thought to look…wait for it…LIKE A MAN. Plain and simple, so YES most women , consciously or subconsciously, have a “thing” about their hair.

My Grandmother use to always say” If you throw a rock into a pack of dogs, 9 times outta 10 , the only one thats gonna hollar is the one you hit”

Tyra made her statement about self esteem and hair,(thats the rock) and all the dogs she is hitting are howling away.

This is the Celebrity link of Caucasian women with WEAVES oh I mean EXTENSIONS.

All women of all races wear WEAVES,EXTENSIONS,WIGS,LACE FRONTS,etc, and whatever else is out there.I dont have a problem with it as log as women are not hating on themselves and thinking that their is something wrong with themselves.I DONT WEAR WEAVES ETC never have.I DONT HAVE THE NEED TO.Just dont assume that if you see a BLACK WOMAN with long hair, that is is fake. Some women have natural long hair, some short, some medium. Some purposely manipulate their hair for a different affect. Some just like for theirs to grow.PERIOD. So for anyone on hear saying that BLACK WOMEN ARE THE ONLY ONES WEARING FAKE HAIR,FAKE BOOBS,FAKE EYELASHES,FAKE TANS,FAKE BOOTY IMPLANTS,ETC,that is an argument you will NEVER WIN.. KNOWLEDGE!!!!!!

courtneyR, I’ve never been to wear weave but, while I’m transitioning to nautral hair I’m gonna be rocking it sometimes to reduce breakage and manipulation to my hair. That still won’t change who I am on the inside. I’m not a big fan on make-up or the other stuff but i’m not gonna knock somebody who wears those things on the regular either. About the woman with long hair, my moms hair is BSL (bra strap length) and people that don’t kno her swears its fake.

The ones that say they have this or that, you can see how bright they are when it comes to topics like this!

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/courtneyR/ courtneyR

@ 1_and_only_ yonnie… I totally agree.People can do as they please..I dont have a problem at all with people manipulating themselves to enhance beauty.Women have been doing it since the beginning of time. Both Egyptian men and women used minerals and clays as makeup. When fake hair, makup etc is used to enhance, thats not self hating. It only becomes that when one starts to hear people say that my hair isnt good enough or what I have isnt good enough. Some black women are not the only ones that do this.White women do it as well..PLASTIC SURGERY ISNT A BOOMING BUSINESS BECAUSE WOMEN LOVE WHAT THEY NATURALLY HAVE.. I personally love going back and forth from hot combing which you dont have to burn your hair out if you know what your doing,to braiding it sometimes and washing it,letting it air dry to let it breath. As I stated,I went to a lady, first time my mother didnt do it,had a perm put in at 17 because I played softball and basketball in school.By the time I hit 21,I had a talk with my grandma and she told me why it was beneficial for me to grow out the perm.It made sense to me so I did. That worked for me.Theirs nothing wrong with what your doing with your hair YONNIE..You have a reason to do it that doesnt yell self hate.

I just dont like it when people say something ignorant and cant back up their claims. To me,to put down people who look like you means that you are putting yourself down. They know waht they are doing in their hearts but dont want to see it.So they spit negativity. These kind of people are TOXIC..and will eventually CRASH AND BURN.All they have to do is KEEP LIVING like my mom and dad always say.You may run into a man thats Indian,White,Black,Spanish that will like your natural styles some dont. Some men just like their women to look like a trophy on the outside to brag to other men what they are sleeping with.Everybody has to do them.Thats fine. But trust me,some men really do want women who radiate beauty on the inside as well as outside and they come in all colors.Trust me.Some men want the complete package because they know that their FUTURE KIDS ARE AT STAKE.REAL TALK..The world is big.You still love yourself.Your not saying when some people say things like, these women are better than those women because,,,,then that speaks to me that their is a problem somewhere with them and they are not complete or happy with themselves.

As soon as you hear people put others down, both men and women that do this, they are projecting what they actually think about themselves. They know in their hearts that what they say isnt the entire truth.Again,THEIR ARE WOMEN WHO ARE WHITE,INDIAN,BLACK,SPANISH,whatever THAT WEAR FAKE HAIR.THEIR ARE WOMEN IN THESE SAME CULTURES THAT DONOT.People assume things to be so about a demographic because THEIR MINDS ARE NOT OPENED.These are the same type of men and women who believe what is told to them instead of finding out for themselves.I SAY,get out AND SEE THE WORLD.What one DRIVES,how big their houses are,HOW MANY DEGREES doesnt mean that one is SMART.IT just means that you STUDIED THE WORDS THAT WERE FEED TO YOU AND REGURGITATED IT BACK TO GET THE ANSWER THAT SOMEONE WAS LOOKING FOR.

Real intelligence comes when people can combine study with COMMON SENSE.AND ALTHOUGH WE HAVE ALOT OF PEOPLE WITH DEGREES AND PHDS,we have TO MANY MORE WITH ABSOLUTELY NO COMMONSENSE.If im lieing, all one has to do is look at the world and see how many people are screwed up,made a mockery of their lives and families, diseases, sleeping around, cheating on their wives ,girls, boyfriends, husbands etc.I dont even know how this topic got to this.lol but somehow,I think its all intertwined, one way or another.

YONNIE,,DO YOU..Let us know how it goes..Good luck Lady..

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/1_AND_ONLY_YONNIE/ 1_AND_ONLY_YONNIE

@courtneyR, a family member(without my mothers permisson) put a perm in my hair because she didn’t know how to deal with my natural curly hair. So it wasn’t about trying to be fake, like a white woman. or self-hate. Alot of people have a lack of knowledge or facts when it comes to a womans hair or body. As for people that state BLACK woman do stuff to their hair to make it straight like a White womans shows lack of knowledge or common sense in a womans hair. SORRY to bust their bubble but every white woman’s hair isn’t curly. Just like SOME OF “US” USE BLOW DRYERS AND FLAT IRONS( WHAT DO THESE DO?), “THEY” DO TOO!

It’s different then to say ” I DON’T LIKE A WOMAN THAT DOES THIS TO HER HAIR OR BODY” (THATS YOUR PREFERENCE) then “I DON’T LIKE BLACK WOMAN BECAUSE THEY DO THIS OR THAT TO THEIR HAIROR BODY TO BECOME SOMEBODY ELSE.(LACK OF KNOWLEDGE OR FACTS ON A WOMAN’S HAIR OR BODY)

A “PERSONS” having a Mastor’s, bachelor’s, P.H.D or whatever doesn’t mean they have common sense or knowledge, it just means they went to some type of college. ALOT of those people FAIL in their Major and they also keep switching it. A car or house doesn’t mean that either.

I think thats cool Yonnie that you apologize for the name calling..It shows maturity.I mean we are all human ..Mr blue should apologize also for calling you names as well.Than we can just move on in an intelligent conversation to agree to disagree after making valid points.

@Mrblueeyes,I read your comments and you did clean it up and said some black women.I agree that grown people can have discussions without calling names.Although I dont agree with everything you said..My only point was and still is,ALL WOMEN manipulate their hair or whatever for the sake of beauty.Theirs nothing wrong with that.It only becomes a problem in my eyes when people start changing themselves because they feel that what they have naturally isnt good enough.

Again as I stated, when people talk rhetoric not based on facts, they will be disputed when given the opporunity to do so.LETS TRY THIS AGAIN….

MOST women of ALL RACES manipulate themselves in some shape or fashion to enhance beauty..NOTHING WRONG WITH THAT.

IT ONLY BECOMES A PROBLEM……. WHEN PEOPLE START TO SAY THAT THEIR HAIR,BUTT,BREASTS,SKIN TONE(GOES BOTH WAYS IN WHITE WOMEN AND BLACK WOMEN) HAIR isnt beautiful, that their is something wrong with how they were made that makes some women want to destroy what is naturally them permanently.

Their are always going to be WOMEN in all RACES,WHITE,BLACK,SPANISH,ASIAN ETC that will have SELF HATE PROBLEMS.Thats just life. But their is a difference in women ENHANCING their beauty AND DESTROYING IT. If their wasnt,The Majority of MEN wouldnt encourage ENHANCING.NOT destroying. To much of ANYTHING ARTIFICIAL isnt good for ANY WOMAN or man.

So its not about the hair straightening thats the problem, its why women are doing it..OTHER RACES OF WOMEN STRAIGHTEN THEIR HAIR ALSO.YOU JUST DONT KNOW IT.Its something like 60 percent of caucasian women have CURLY HAIR THEMSELVES, they manipulate it to straighten it.TO MANAGE IT BETTER JUST LIKE BLACK WOMEN AND ALL WOMEN DO.That doesnt mean you hate yourself. Its only self hate when you start to say to yourself that what you have doesnt measure up.Then you start destroying what you naturally have to fit someone elses idea of beauty.

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/1_AND_ONLY_YONNIE/ 1_AND_ONLY_YONNIE

QUESTION; How does it make you BLACK women feel after seeing your hair FALL OUT,stop growing, and have your edges look like the grand canyon as a result of chemicals and wigs? what is the FIRST thought that comes to you head once you take the wig off?
ooooops, my bad. EYE forgot that the reason you were wearing the wig is because you “KILLED” your hair with the chemicals. how stupid of me. : ]
so NOW you “HAVE” to wear wigs and weaves because YOU’ve killed your scalp. isn’t it ironic?!
kinda like cutting off your eyebrows and THEN drawing them back on!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! HELLOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO
    IS ANYONE OUT THERE??????

it’not “name-calling”. STUPID is as STUPID does!

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/courtneyR/ courtneyR

Its all good Yonnie,no ones perfect.Im a messball myself.lmao.LIFE IS ABOUT LEARNING AND EXPERIENCING AND GROWING.We all are going through that journey. But I do try not to PURPOSELY hurt or attack people or OUT RIGHT LIE ON PEOPLE.I SEE ALOT OF THAT ON HERE so its understandable why you would would get upset.Anyone would.WE all can get upset when we know what someone is saying isnt the TRUTH.I guess everyones TRUTH is different.lol.My mothers a LEO…lol.Im a CANCER so you know about us.emotional.lol.As long as we can admit we are wrong on a certain point, than its ok…..Some people will never admit it when they are wrong.Thats unfortunate. It just makes them look pigheaded and stubborn. And when people are like that, they dont learn or move forward as a human being. They just get stuck in their destructive ways.

When you see grown people calling others out of their name and not speaking on facts or respectfully but still able to disagree, their isnt even a point you know.Just let it be.Sometimes it sounds like being in the sand box in elementary school when little kids settle their differences with taunts, hitting, spitting, and being nasty. That is a person who is mentally immature. So when your on another level, they aren’t going to get what you are talking about anyway. So whats the point.

You ever look at people who are always mean, always talking negative about someone as they age? They end up wearing mean and angry permanately.Thats not a good look..Man or Woman…

@ Mrbluesays,I understand when you say you love your natural women of color.Just dont believe that all women who manipulate themselves in some way hates themselves.Their is definitely a difference between all women who enhance themselves and those who destroy themselves. You can usually tell and definitely tell when one opens their mouths and speak on what they stand for.Thats all races of women.Just dont lump straightening with hating. It depends on the woman and why they may or may not do it.

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/cherronw/ cherronw

@ DAREALRECKLESS-First of all using “Eye” instead of “I” is shear stupidity. How is calling your fellow black people monkeys (you spelled that wrong too idiot) self love? Black women get weaves because let’s face it, men love long hair and we love the versatility. Our hair is naturally dry and brittle and yes it does become even more so afte we chemically relax, color, or have extensions put in. However it is our right to do so. It has nothing to do with white women, our styles our often way different from theirs. It has nothing whatsoever to do with the breakdown of the black community. Young black men are not being killed on the streets or filling up the prison cells because some women prefer to add in a little Yaki. Over 50% of black children are not born out of wedlock because we might want to get some micros. If I were you I would shut the hell up because you obviously are just spewing ignorant hate, jackass.

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/cherronw/ cherronw

@mrbluesays-Who cares if you have a BMW? Some people might say that is a white man’s car and that you should be driving an Escalade, lol! You can have your prefer of women just like we have our preference of hair. You don’t have to equate it to self hate. If you think black women have to all look a certain way in order for us to be beautiful, then you are the one that is hating.

True… fake hair is worn by women of ALL races and it’s also true that this has been going on as far back as the Egyptian Dynasties, but let’s face it American Nubian women started perming their hair because of the psychological abuse that our ancestors had to endure during slavery. Generation after generation this attitude is passed down to today. The reason why some of these women wear weaves is because they probably didn’t know how to perm correctly (why would someone subjugate themselves to what used to be an Native American torture method is beyond me. But then again I like a little S&M every now and then myself sooooo) and burned all of their hair out or they are too impatient to grow it out. I refuse to believe that so many Nubian sisters are trying to “get in touch” with their heritage in Egypt. Especially when some of these women are too busy chasing anthing related to Louie Vuittons nazi supporting ass or anything that is considered to be “haute coiture” and wearing fake colored contacts and nails and such. Funny thing is (at least in this generation) I had seen very few women rock naturals until Zhane came on to the scene (then they went and got perms) and this whole “Neo-Soul” lame poetry and phony crocheted pants “movement” came about. So in essence a lot of these women that have naturals are doing it because its fashionable and they are following the crowd and are phony as a three dollar bill with Clintons mug on it! I know women that fit this description and they are just like that chick on “She’s gotta have it”. If I may have offended you by what I just typed……………

THEN F**K IT BECAUSE YOU CAN’T PLEASE EVERYONE ALL OF THE GODDAMNED TIME ANYWAY.
OH, & I CAN SAY GODDAMNED BECAUSE I BROKE THE SHACKLES OF CHRISTIANITY A LONG TIME AGO!

Pardon the typos and In essence I’m saying that the hair is supposedly an extension iof the mind. So I guess there are a lot of women that are just jacked in the brain!

I don’t know what to say here, as a man. How about, there’s too much testosterone and EGO flying around here. So unnecessary. Can’t we all just get along, ladies? And act like ladies and not a pair of alleycats? Puh-leeze, children.

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/courtneyR/ courtneyR

@cestleon your right about somethings. Are their women who are superficial that worship materials? of course.are their women who will do anything to catch a man even negative things?of course.I guess it comes down whats important to an individual. But whatever your choices are will be reflected by you one way or another. If im walking around preaching I want a simple man that respects himself, respects his mother and women, who works hard, that isnt a metrosexual, someone strong and compassionate, then you see me walking with a pimp,or thug,or a man thats vain, you have every right to call me a fake. But when you see that a woman cleary isnt and walking what she is talking and being true to herself, you and no one else has the right to say otherwise, put her down, and lump all women together because it simply isnt true about all women who are negative.Just like it isnt true that all men are negative and babies daddies, dead beats, thugs, sellouts, woman beaters, rapist etc.You can only observe what people stand for and see if their actions match up to what they are saying. But I will say that whatever some men are saying about why women are not adequate, those very same men better not be apart of the problem either. You see,as far as im concerned, you except the very behavior from what you say you dont like when you use these very same women and sleep with them anyway for your own selfish gains. That goes for females also.Whatever happened to respecting a man or a woman? whatever happened to getting to truly know someone and taking the time to do so instead of moving 800 miles an hour? A person who really doesnt want any part of something, doesnt entertain those types. Not all women are artifical or simpleminded. But that does require those men to step up in the morality department as well.. If a person man or woman can RESPECT the simpliest of things about life, than they will know what is truly important in people and what to look for if its something of substance that one is looking for.Just conversating with you not arguing. We have to get over to much arguing and just talk sometimes..

Some black women wear weaves/wigs..some white women tan and get injections in their lips .. latin women dye their hair blonde etc etc …there are certain characteristics that each ethnicity admires about the other..theres nothing wrong with changing your physical appearance a little as long as you don’t hate your ancestry or hate who you are..and lets face even if a black woman has a weave down to her ankles..guess what she still is BLACk.

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/amyee81/ amyee81

I wear weaves and I am love myself. The first time I was introduced to a track , create the track master that I am today. I like changing hairstyles including wearing my own hair. If some black women think that wearing a weave means that you hate who you are and where you come from then exclude me out of that group because I think afros and straight hair is beautiful.

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/Mom2Girls/ Mom2Girls

Umm it was a fun show, Joy surprised me with that one…people talk about Tyra’s weave’s all the time. Oprah is wearing her natural hair this season too…she made a little video about it too…but I guess Joy missed that and went for Tyra who I guess is the easier target…It was not that serious Joy….

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/sexidee28/ sexidee28

unless Joy was kidding, which it seems like she might have been, i’m with tyra on this one. wearing a weave all the time is like wearing a hat all the time imo. I’ve never had a weave, i’ve worn braid extentions before and i liked them, but i didn’t stay with them in my hair. maybe i’m biased b/c i have pretty long hair, but it’s not perfect and it’s relaxed, usually, but i deal with it. tyra was weaved out and she needed the change. and there’s nothing wrong with promoting real hair or even natural hair amongst sistas. too often our hair is tied to our self esteem

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/SEXYME13/ SEXYME13

Is this chick serious?! See what happens when the acting checks stop coming in…you have to much time on your hands to blog about foolery. She has her nerve to come out of the box sideways on anyone about their appearance, as dusty, dried out sometimes to damn oily, as she looks ALLLLL the time. Doesn’t make any sense for someone to have the means that she has and to be in Hollywood to look like that at every given occasion and have the nerve to open their mouth, and try to clown what someone else (a ex-supermodel to be exact) is doing. Sounds like hater-aid to me…and I am not even a Tyra fan, but Joy isn’t even in the same category, girl try to take some tips! And now, we find out that the chick has been sporting a weave the whole time makes it even worse! Lawd, so you telling my that dried out kinky thing on your head, is what you weaved in on purpose?! Gotta give it to her, she fooled me I thought it was her’s and she was just trying to be natural…but since now you have expressed to the world that you are too a slave to the weave & needle, you can’t put some real heat on that joint? Also to, since you already half way there, and you are indeed a weave wearer…put some flippin make up on and some damn earrings, when you step on the red carpet and get in front of the damn camera and stop looking like you are one of these chicks that Tyra is helping thru her “T-zone Foundation”….she even looked dusty on her wedding day…I mean come on…greasy/dry face, no make-up, no earrings, not so straight edges and that “now we know” kinky ass ponytail! Damn, sounds like Joy and Stephon Marbury are all smoking that same “ish”..lol! Just say no…can some find Joy a stylist? Oh hey Tyra, you have enough loot, (more than she will ever see) to help her out…hey just think of it like a tax write off thru your foundation! LMAO, ok, I’m done I’m done…later!

Joy Bryant looks ridiculous in her weaves, every time I see her. She has the confidence to spew that bitter madness at Tyra, because White America embraces her…and they embrace her because she does not embrace her natural Black self. Her attack on Tyra is clearly a defensive one and it makes me loathe her. Tyra did a good thing, by making people think about their natural hair, even if it was just for a day. She may have changed an assimilating, lost girl, into a true Black princess. Ya never know.

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/aloreeng/ aloreeng

OMG what foolishness this is!! Joy you should be ashamed of yourself. It’s cliche and very sad that the only truth in what you rant about is this:
“Nothing like a new batch of zig-zag curly to get your self esteem out of the dumps! The feeling of getting my hair, I mean, my weave done over. I feel human again. I feel sexy. I feel powerful.”

I’ve seen it time and time again…women in the beauty shop getting their “weaves done over”. When they walk in the shop with the dusty weave (like yours usually is, Joy) they have a bounce in their step, but when the weave is taken out and they are escorted to the shampoo bowl, they have their head slightly lowered. When the fresh weave is put back in….booooyee, here comes that confident, outgoing and often very vocal in the shop woman. It’s really sad to me. I’m not pro-natural/anti perm but I think it’s just sad when women have to add hair, fake nails, eyelashes, wear a bunch of makeup and color contacts in a lot of cases to feel beautiful. You can try and sell people on the fact that you are confident in your natural skin but we can see through all of that for what it really is….just a front.

Joy, get a life and just so you know…your Pocahontas look really misses the mark in most cases. I’m not trying to be mean but I have always thought you had one of the worst overall weaves in the business. Sorry, boo.

Hey I think its about time somebody called Tyra on her bulls**t. She’s so insecure its crazy. All she talks about on her show is herself. All the time, you can count each time she says “Well, in my modeling career… when I was a model…. One time when I was a Victoria Secrets model I…. Its so annoying. Tyra is always on some fake s**t, trying to be the next Opra. Its not going to happen babe! I think Joy is just being sarcastic and pointing out the fact that tyra is fake. I wanna shake Joy’s hand! =)

I AM SO TIRED OF THIS “CONFIDENCE BY-THE-BAG S**T”

I STARTED OUT MY LIFE WITH LONG HAIR, AND OVER THE YEARS CHANGED FROM LONG TO SHORT, AND SHORT TO LONG! DEPENDING ON HOW I WANTED TO EXPRESS MY FASHION. I PERSONALLY DON’T FEEL THE NEED FOR WEAVES, HOWEVER, I DON’T HATE, FOR PEOPLE THAT DO! MY ONLY PROBLEM WITH PEOPLE THAT WEAR WEAVES IS…………..GET A PROFESSIONAL!! SOME OF THESE WEAVES OUT THERE (sorry Joy, but girl you need to change your weave source, because your’s be looking troubled!!!)THAT LOOK LIKE A BLIND BEAUTICIAN PUT IT IN! MAKE IT LOOK REAL! IF I HAVE TO STARE AT YOUR HEAD FOR A WHILE, WELL THEN YOU GOT A GOOD WEAVE! BUT IF YOU GOT A PART IN THE MIDDLE OF YOUR HEAD, AND THEN A “HUMP” ON BOTH SIDES OF THE PART, LIKE SOMETHING IS HIDING UNDER YOUR PART, THEN YOUR WEAVE IS WACK!

Why is it 7 pages for this ish’ ?

Is this a “hot topic” for the Black community? Really?

If someone wears a weave or doesnt, who gives a fug. Anc regardless of what dumb a** Black boys like Thekid1986 thinks..MOST (meaning more than 50%) of American women use things to inhance or alter their appearance. Whether it’s White women using Botox & Tanning booths or Asian women using skin bleaching agents…*NEWSFLASH* Black women are not the only ones using products that aren’t “naturally” theirs.

Wake the fug up, get a clue, and find something else to b*tch about besides what the next person spends their money on :)

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/StarrSantiago/ StarrSantiago

The Black men on here commenting about wanting their women to be “natural” are a fuggin riot, lmao

So that means you want a b*tch who doesn’t shave her legs, doesn’t wash her a**, and who doesnt wear a bra?? Afterall…you said you like em’ natural. As we say in Jersey..Get the fug outta here with that bullsh*t! You want natural like Trump wants to be a blue collar man.

Ladies, don’t believe these boxes if stories. If men wanted to look at a “natural” looking woman, they wouldn’t be the biggest consumers of porn and mens magazines :)

To each her own. Nobody should be telling anyone how to look. If Joy wants to wear weaves, then cool. It’s no big deal. I prefer women with their own hair bt admittedly, Im attracted to women with long hair, so I feel alot of sistas’ pain. I just wish sistas would explore the possibilities of their own hair before getting wigs and weaves. My nieces have their hair braided in order to have long hair. It even worked for me as a man when I was a teen with an afro. I relaxed my hair and ended up with Snoop Dogg hair haha. I know it’s alot of work but if white girls can wear cornrows then sistas should work with their own hair more and have more options.

I noticed that every time someone talks about black women wearing weave the first thing a guilty woman says in her defense is ” the other races do it too”,and that’s the problem right there……..Stop dwelling on what other races do and try to enrich yourself……StarrSantiago, you might be a good woman, just really brainwashed,so i suggest you read a book titled” Making of a Slave” from author Willie Lynch. It would say why you use the word”black” while you in try to insult me,and go on trying to justify wearing weave. This is what youre wearing…….(via Wikipedia.com)

Weaves is derived from Asia (China, India, and to a very small degree, Southeastern Russia). Lower-quality “human hair” extensions are often diluted with animal and synthetic hair to lower the price. YAK(the big hairy animal) hair can be curled, permed, relaxed, and colored. Human hair is, however, more versatile than synthetic hair because it can be colored, relaxed, or curled with heating appliances just as one would do with his or her own hair. But, many people are allergic to yak hair so suppliers are using human hair treated to mimic the African/African American texture.
