Considering the fact that the N-word was created as a racially demeaning term used to marginalize an entire race of oppressed people, it is hard to understand why the word is still a fixture in urban discourse.  The debate on whether or not the term should be informally abolished is still raging in America, though there is a general lack of consensus with regard to the sensitive issue.  While the rules banning most if not all other races from using the term are clear, we are still unable to let go of the historically rooted profanity, turned term of endearment.

Recently, Jonathan E. McCoy, an 11 year old boy took a stance against use of the N-word.  His smart, honest approach to criticizing the word’s implementation in urban culture is among the most poignant ever offered by such a young orator.  In his speech, McCoy states:

“Unfortunately this misinterpretation of our heritage has been perpetuated among our own race. Rather than obliterate this disrespectful term we have adapted it as a cultural phrase. You’ve heard it, “What’s up my n-word?” Or maybe you’ve said it, “Get out my face n-word.”So why have we taken this word to use it in our everyday language to communicate to or about ourselves? Let me dispel the myth, as a people we are neither economically, politically, nor socially disenfranchised…..So I’m petitioning you to join me in deleting this word from our vocabulary as a people, as a nation and as a world.”

While this young man is aware of the benefits of abolishing the N-word, other more public figures differ in opinion.  There are scarcely any hip hop artists that omit the word “ni*ger” from their music, much less their personal vocabularies.  Prominent rappers (who are also consequently our youth’s role models) glorify its use, and encourage it regularly.  Jay-Z, who is perhaps at the apex of hip hop fame, is one of the most vocal advocates of the N-word.  In a recent interview with Fuse TV, the super star explained his views on the N-word when asked whether it was still appropriate to use the word ni*ger with someone like Barack Obama in office, Jay-Z responded:

“No i disagree with that,  I think that what we did with the word ni*ger is turned it on its ear. We took the power out of the word because people give words power. If we eliminate the word ni*ger, i mean, its a great gesture. But i don’t believe that’s the answer to the problem. If we eliminate the word ni*ger it will be porch monkey. People give words power…Before [Barack Obama] was there, this word existed and we took that word and turned it on its ear and made it a term of endearment.  Like ‘this is my nigga, jigga my nigga.’ We took the power away from that word…I think the larger problem is fixing that. Fixing racism at its core that’s the only thing you can fix. You can’t fix words.”

While both are conscious of the fact that racism is the foundation upon which the N-word was built, their opinions of what it has been built into varies.  Whats your view? Is the N-word just a derogatory remnant of the past, or have we as a people taken control of it and made it a positive term?

Should the N-word be abolished?

Here is the footage of Jay-Z’s interview with Fuse. Check for the racism discussion around the 16 minute mark:

The word N****r has all the power you give it. When it’s useless and gone someone will come up with another word.

It’s not so much the word we should be concerned about……IT’S THE BEHAVIOR!!!!

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/classy57lady/ classy57lady

Abolish the killings, the self-hatred, the disrespectful behavior we display towards ourselves and one another and the word will follow. We are concentrating on the wrong thing.

    N*gga comes from N*gger…
    N*gger comes from Negro…
    Negro comes from NeCro…
    Necro = ‘DEAD’ in Latin…

BUT you could say ‘NAGA’ instead….from the black-Dravidians of ancient India (east-Kush/Ethiopia)….. Naga is related to the ‘Kundalani’, (its related to tantra-sex, chakras etc)

OR could say ‘NEGUS’ from Ethiopia/Kush…..meaning emporer/ruler

but yeah…. Nlgga, Nlgger, Negro, NeCro all mean ”DEAD”, like zombies……like Frankenstein…….

The word “nigga” is just that…A WORD!!! Nothing more nothing less. However, the word does have meaning behind it and the origin of the word derives from hate, prejudice, racism and oppression of blacks. I recently viewed a video of a young boy speaking to a church about killing the word “nigga” and the message was truly profound. I am guilty of using the word. It has become a “term of endearment” in the black community it seems. Nonetheless, I think when we stop “nigga” BEHAVIOR, LIFESTYLES & PRACTICES we truly will abolish the word.

N*gger has not lost power. Black people still get outraged when they hear the word come out of a white person’s mouth. Personally, I don’t believe in banning any word. It’s a waste of time and resources. Plus I think the word still applies to a certain segment of the American community, black or white. I use it when it applies, and will never stop using it (LOL). If you “ban” a word, the emotion remains, and people will choose another word to express that emotion, and then that word becomes the new “n-word.” What is the REAL problem, the word that REPRESENTS a thought, or the THOUGHT itself?

it is just a word. and words shouldnt have such an affect on people really. if ever i were to be called a n*gger by a nonblack person, i would probably just laugh and ask them was that supposed to hurt my feelings or make me cry. i know who and what i am. so no one can call me something im not and make me upset about it. and i use that word all day everyday…just a greeting to me. BUT…i would never use that word in front of a nonblack person. “they” have started listening to our music, thinking that its ok to use the word…idk how i really feel about that, because at the same time there is a difference between just saying the word and actually calling someone that word…..hmm…

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/neecy_girl/ neecy_girl

i don’t use it, but if it’s only ok for black people to say it, isn’t that in itself racist? if black people are offended when other people say it, but use it themselves, that’s hypocrisy.

IT REALLY BOTHERS ME THAT SOME OF OUR YOUNG PEOPLE ARE SO IGNORANT. WAY IS THAT WE’RE THE ONLY PEOPLE THAT THINKS THAT USING A NEGETIVE WORD IS POSITIVE? NO MATTER HOW YOU EXPLAIN IT, IT’S STILL THE SAME, IT WAS USED TO DOWN OUR PEOPLE. I DON’T APPRECIATE IT BEING USE BY A WHITE PERSON AND I DON’T APPRECIATED IT BEING CALLED ONE BY OUR FOLKS. THERE WAS A LAW SUIT FILE BY A BLACK TEACHER AGAINST A WHITE BOY THAT CALLED HER A N****R. IT WAS DISMISSED BY THE JUDGE BECAUSE HE FELT THAT SINCE THE YOUNGER GENERATION USE THE WORD, THEN SHE DIDN’T HAVE ANY CAUSE TO SUE. THE ONLY PEOPLE THAT DON’T HAVE ANY PROBLEM WITH IS THE PEOPLE THAT’S MAKING MONEY OFF IT(JAY-Z,50 CENT AND ABOVE ALL “WHITE PEOPLE”). YOU FOLKS REALLY NEED TO CHECK YOURSELF!

I’ve seen almost all of these “stars” do commercials saying that these words are wrong, that racial bias is wrong.
But they will turn around and endorse the use of the word, N****R.
That’s why no one respects us. We will go on show after show saying that N****R is just a word. Let them do that with, Kyke or Chink. Their asses would get handed to them.

Let’s c what I can add to this one.
It has been said before and I think it should b said again n****r is just a word. George carlin said it best, every word in the english language is completely and utterly neutral. What makes a word bad or dirty is the context of it’s use. If anyone was to simply say n****r I wouldn’t care but if they call me a n****r then it’s a problem. It’s the same principle as if some one was to say f–k and someone was to call you a f–k face. It’s the context that makes u mad, not just that they said the word.

Boy i am so sick of this topic ,are black folks so dumb that they can’t see the amount of damage that they do to their own communities or culture ?I can’t believe that black folks would debate a topic such as this ,is this what the likes of Martin Luther King, or brotha Malcolm X or Khalid Mohammed died for? Its a sad state of circ**satnces indeed that an 11 year old child has to bring it to our attention. This is the very reason i hate the likes of Jay Z and Nas with their stupid backward ass thinking.Heres the question would any of these fools every refer to their mothers or fathers as “n****rs? Would any right thinkiong black person ever refer to their parents as n****rs?

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/Tefaz2008/ Tefaz2008

To add to what I just posted,
I think we all need to understand what we as black people do. Since times of slavery, we have been adapting. We have been taking what is givin to us and making the best we can out of it. U can c that aspect in the food we eat. The slave owners gave us the worst parts of the animal to eat and we took that and created delicious soul food. That doesn’t change the fact that soul food started off disgusting. Same thing with the words we use. We took a word used to degrade us and flipped it and made it into OUR word. No other race of people have done that becaues no other race of people CAN do that. And it’s not just n****r, words like dog, hustler, pimp, thug, just to name a few r word that black folks have taken and made positive is proof that it’s not what words u use but the CONTEXT of the words that count.

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/DARKHEARTPHENIX/ DARKHEARTPHENIX

That word won’t die because BLACK people keep breathing life into it. The only reason that word is still around is because we/black people keep calling ourselves that.So until we stop using it and calling each other that it won’t stop. By black people using the word it has made it easier and more comfortable for other races to call us a NI**ER (A)or (AH) . IF THAT WORD IS EVER TO DIE WE AS BLACK PEOPLE MUST PUT IT TO REST “STOP SAYING IT TO OTHER BLACK PEOPLE” WHETHER YOU USE AN (A OR AH) AT THE END OF THE WORD IT’S STILL THE SAME WORD, SAME MEANING.

When you make your living thru words, the idea of “it’s just a word” is B/S. You make your living stringing words together. Whether you’re Abe Lincoln trying to heal the nation after war or you’re Rakim trying to move the crowd, you realize words are powerful.

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/mrfun1958/ mrfun1958

Hell yeah it should abolished. The N word has been haunting blacks for centuries and when we finally start to get some head way young blacks (teenagers on up) have brought it back to the forefront, especially in music. When I ride the subway I hear young people (I am 51) using that word like its nothing and its very embarrassing.Of course there are other races on the train and they see and hear this. No wonder the black race is still looked down upon, this is one of the biggest problems in our race.

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/regg4uu/ regg4uu

Only the stupid, Uneducated and seriously dumb azzzzzes would say no. This word was meant to degrade us. Nothing can change that! Sojurner Truth said, “I could have freed more slaves if they knew they were slave.”

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/BoweryBetty/ BoweryBetty

I have run out of words to describe how DISTURBED and ENRAGED I feel whenever I hear Black people using this self-hating, dehumanizing term — and don’t get me started on the endless throngs of ASIAN and LATINO youth I’ve encountered merrily using the word to refer themselves and each other as they mimic their rap and pop culture icons! The origins of the word and the bloody, hard-fought struggle of the civil rights movement have been forgotten and pissed on. You want to know what I think of every time I hear it? I think of my father as a little boy accompanying his male relatives to cut down the body of his cousin who had been hanged by the klan during the old days of Jim Crow and segregation in Louisiana. ‘N****rs die’ had been hacked into his flesh with a knife. That experience scarred him for LIFE. Using the N word will NEVER be okay with me. EVER.

“as a people we are neither economically, politically, nor socially disenfranchised”–ideal, but not the complete truth. But anyway, it’s not the N-word that’s killing us (sometimes even literally). I’ve heard Jewish people call each other “Jew”, but they don’t let non-Jewish people say that. What is the difference when it comes to the N-word and Black people? There is no difference. But people rally against its use. If you don’t want to use it, don’t. But there are bigger issues to worry about here.

Hey y’all, N-gga will never be abolished cuz n-gga is also our friendly term in our today’s world. It be no longer w/ white mans’ racist word as “n-gger” Remember it’s now n-gga in Ebonics and it is like a brotha. We call ourselves w/ “n-gga” word in a friendly way than bein’ offended since we blacks use it to each other as a homie. “What’s up n-gga?” don’t sound like be to destroyin’ to our black community huh? N-gger and N-gga are 2 different words I use today. So knock it off w/ yo’ bullsh-t about tellin’ people dat we blacks are destroyin’ our black community by one verbal or written word “N-gga!”
