Rihanna
The recent domestic abuse scandal involving Rihanna and Chris Brown has sparked quite the controversy in the blogosphere.  Both bloggers and readers have taken to their keyboards to sound off on the details of the incident.  Much blame has been cast upon both involved and much judgement has been passed down, but the discussion of Chriannagate ’09 has also taken on another side; particularly amongst those seeing Rihanna as the guilty party for whatever provocation she offered in the situation.

Many have chosen to single Rihanna out as hot headed, irrational, and Caribbean. But since when did “Caribbean” become an insult?  Peruse the comments following stories related to the Chris/Rihanna beat-down and you’re sure to find one, if not many, angry bloggers insulting Rihanna and attributing her actions to her West Indian nationality.  Fine, people are going to blame the starlet for playing some part in the scandal. But why not separate the girl from the nationality before judging her? Rihanna might be West Indian, but are all West Indians like Rihanna? No.

In fact, it seems like people of Caribbean descent get a bad rap within the industry and in the media as well.  Recently, one of Chris Brown’s dancers made a viral video in which he called Rihanna a “West Indian slut.”  The problem is,  a generalization like that goes beyond Rihanna and encompasses all West Indians.  While this could be chalked up to a misuse of words, it seems like there is a negative connotation connected to people, and in particular women, who identify them selves as West Indian.

In a recent episode of the popular Bravo show The Real Housewives of Atlanta, cast-mate Lisa visits her mother who declares that she is West Indian.  At that point Lisa comments on how “spicy” such women are.  Yet another generalization, albeit not as severe as the previous with regard to Rihanna.  Throughout the media it seems like such stereotypical opinions are the standard for this vibrant, diverse group of people.  The West Indies is comprised of several independent island countries beginning near the southernmost tip of Florida and continuing to the coast of Venezuela.  Considering this, it is strange that so many people from so many different countries are so often lumped together and pigeonholed.

So is this the standard? Do West Indian women really get a bad rap, or are these two  instances isolated?

I don’t credit her nationality to the reason why she got what she got but I do agree that she is partially to blame for it ;)

All Black women have these NEGATIVE labels. The West Indian men stereotype African American women as well & it’s usually to the extent that they find American Blacks ghetto, inferior. I hear and read African American men state that they date Black women, just NOT American ones. In today’s society Black women are demonized PERIOD and put in a “box” by Black people esp. the MEN.

@ WindChimes I totally agree with the notion that black men put us black women in a “box”.

I am of caribbean descent, jamaican and Barbajan (barbados), and we are know for not takin anything sitting down but to say that she deserved anything for any reason, especially because of where she is from is prejudice… and i think alot of people are mistaken by the facts of the case if they believe other wise. she didnt inflict physical harm to him so why is it okay that he did to her because of her descent? no one knows for sure the history of the relationship, but this incident is no exception

I’m West Indian, Montserrat. People just talk, Rihanna’s West Indian background has nothing to do with the way potrays herself. Like everyone else said, Black women in general have a bad rap. A side note: where did Stacey Dash get all that booty from??

There are beautiful women in every race or nationality. Also I don’t discriminate when it comes to women. There is also a large number of stereotypes about women from different races and nationalities. Don’t believe all that garbage. I judge each person on an individual basis, how they treat me and others.

This article have some valid points.. I’m Jamaican and people expect me to have a temper before knowing me. There are always going to be different stereotypes with different nationalities..it’s expected..but people need to shut their mouths before speaking on something they have no clue about. Especially if it’s about a celebrity and coming from tabloids. The back up dancers for Chris Brown who told Rihanna to go back to Barbados needs to think about it.. she came to America willingly…not on slave ships.. I rest case.

wow.since when did a persons ethnicity suggest what their personality and life?Hey pumpu, that is funny you say that about Jamaican women b/c their is a whole lot of ish out there about jamaican men, and I know people who are not jamaican that wouldn’t give a jamaican man a time or day.in fact, every ethnicity has their own stereotype period.I believe that Rhianna isn’t as innocent as the media portrays.Chris was wrong to put his hands on her but she wasn’t a goody 2 show either which is clearly obvious. But af far as Jamaicans.I went to college with a girl who is jamai. but I must admit that I was ignorant @ that time about jamaicans, I was in disbelieve that she was because she was kind of quiet. But yeah, ethnicity doesn’t imply what a person’s behavior is, but rather their surroundings and the environment in which they were raised b/c that is all they see and know.

Well Im of haitian descent and I know very few spicy haitian women. I just think its wrong to make a generalization like that. If Rihanna is crazy its because of her and not because of where her family originated from.

I have the same discussion with some of my friends, and we concluded that it has to do with the values and conditioning here in the United States. This is the reason why we as black people of all nationalities and shades will never be united because we buy into this whole notion of divide and conquer. To where we have to put down a certain group to make ourselves look good and higher in the totem pole than the next. I know youve heard your friends or others talk bad about black folks from the caribbean, south amerikkka and afrika in a very negative manner.

I THINK THAT ALL WOMEN, ESPECIALLY ALL BLACK WOMEN DO. BUT MOSTLY BY BLACK MEN. YOU CANT STEREOTYPE A WHOLE REGION. BUT EVERY STEREOTYPE HAS A VALID BASIS. I HAVE HUNG AROUND ALOT OF JAMAICAN MEN AND WOMEN, AND THOSE ONES WERE MORE STANDOFFISH…KINDA STUCK UP OR HAVE AN ATTITUDE. BUT IM SURE THATS NOT ALL OF THEM. HOWEVER, I DO FEEL THAT WHERE YOU COME FROM DOES HAVE AN INFLUENCE ON THE TYPE OF PERSON YOU BECOME. DIFFERENT REGIONS OF THE WORLD HAVE DIFFERENT CULTURES…SOME HAVE WOMEN WHO ARE MORE AGRESSIVE AND SOME HAVE WOMEN WHO ARE MORE LIKE DOOR MATS. BUT BLACK PEOPLE SHOULD STOP PUTTIN OTHER BLACK PEOPLE IN CATEGORIES AND JUST LOVE EACH OTHER…D*MN CAN WE PLEASE BRING BLACK LOVE BACK…

Tell It Stefan…they been jocking West Indians for years man. Jamaicans’ Trini’s(like me), haitians all that. All this talk about Jamaican weed being the best, and rasta this and that. The audacity of some folks. When U see most domestic violence situations being those of these yankees. They just S.O.S where they don’t say s/hit and be like, “girl he loves me.” And 9 out of 10, they take they silly men back. Ha!

didn’t this article feed into the stereotypes of west indian women to, so why print it? This is a dumb topic like most of the blogs on this site lmao. If it was about west indiam women…. then why was rianna the topic…. should of did a lil more research about west indian women and not use rianna as your subject cause that just makes it apparent that you don’t know what the hell your talking about like most people who single out a group lol.

Although the article is poorly comprised with suggestive statements and false conclusions….
I have to admit west indian women are different. not better not worst but yes different. Our music, dance and style of dress in ours and should not be really second guessed by people who do not share our experience. I am haitian and proud of it
