LaLa Vasquez wrote an essay for latina magazine addressing her racial background. She says that while both of her parents are Puerto Rican, that makes her Puerto Rican. But she also says that doesn’t mean she’s not “black” as well.

Here’s what LaLa had to say:

A lot of people don’t realize that I’m Latina, which is fine. One thing about being Latina is that there isn’t one look that comes with the territory. I don’t expect people to know my cultural background just by glancing at me. I do, however, expect that when I tell people my family is from Puerto Rico, that I will be believed and not accused of trying to be something that I’m not. It usually goes something like this: a person having a conversation with me discovers one way or another that I’m Puerto Rican and fluent in Spanish. That person then expresses their shock over these realizations for any number of reasons—common responses are, “You don’t look Latina” and “I thought you were black!” I never said I wasn’t black. And since when does being black and being Latina have to be mutually exclusive?

In my experience, people tend to have an uninformed and rather narrow view of what it means to be Puerto Rican. For me, not looking like some people’s idea of a typical Latina has been challenging and often painful. I constantly find myself trying to justify who I am, and why should I? I’m proud of my heritage and my family. Both of my parents are from Puerto Rico. They raised two kids in Brooklyn and later in New Jersey, where we ate arroz con gandules and pasteles and listened to salsa music. I feel just as at home in Puerto Rico, where I still have tons of family, including aunts, uncles and cousins. Puerto Rico is in my blood. And that has nothing to do with the color of my skin.

I’m not angry with anyone who doesn’t understand the complexities of race and culture. And I’m also not interested in having long, drawn out conversations about how it’s possible for me to look like this and speak Spanish. In fact, sometimes I make it a point not to mention my parents’ birthplace because I don’t always feel like having the inevitable discussion that follows. Instead, I let people look at me and come to their own conclusions. As I start to get my feet wet in Hollywood, I already know that there are certain parts I won’t even be considered for. The character can be Puerto Rican and speak Spanish just like me, but Hollywood defines Latina as Jennifer Lopez and Sofia Vergara. As beautiful as they are, we’re not all one race in Latin America. But I don’t go to auditions so that I can give history lessons to film executives. I’d rather skip the entire process.

I’m raising my son to understand who he is, and it’s my hope that he’ll never let others define him. It reflects poorly on us when we don’t educate ourselves about the rest of the world and what it looks like. I encourage people who are interested to learn more, do research and ask informed questions. If you’re lucky enough to visit various countries in Latin America, you’ll be baffled to see the blackest of the black and the lightest of the light living together. And I dare you to ask one of them to prove their latinidad.

Big f*ckin’ ups to Lala Vasquez. Say word my sista. It is what it is, and this is what it is. Daisy Fuentes said the same thing. One of these days in the future, people are going to realize that “Latino” is a culture and not a race. Maybe it’s a “race” for Latinos of Native American and European decent, but for the Caribbean “Latinos” and ones of more African descent (including Jennifer Lopez), the sh*t ain’t no race. YOU DON’T LOOK ANY DIFFERENT FROM BLACK PEOPLE. When did we start having Negroid, Caucasoid, Mongoloid, and…Latinoid??? C’mon people!

@Lifeiswutumakit: I totally agree with you man. This is the reason why america is so ignorant.. In my eyes, mostly people that is born here and only speaks english are the most racist and assuming bastards in this world. america influence others to be this ignorant. I love america, but the ignorance of ignoring of being at least logical and smart is out of the books. this country is like that because of the dwelling of racism. people would look at me and assume i’m puerto rican, italian, or just a white american guy. people must be on drugs.. no logical sense at all in america. get to know me first before you can assume some BS like that.

People tend to forget Africans were enslaved in the Caribbean as well as in America. And because many of us do not know real history, including our own history, we get surprised to see medium to dark-skinned people in other parts of the world speaking another language.

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/mynamehereNJ/ mynamehereNJ

People once and for all understand that American blacks are not the only blacks. And American blacks have not had the only black experience. All people of color in the western hemisphere came from Africa. We all came off the same slave ships and just made different stops. Some of us have more mixed blood than others and that’s all. The false barrier of language separates us. Remember England,Spain,Portugal are all European. Latino, Negro,Indian are all European terms forced upon us. A person of African decent is a person of African decent Regardless.
Please understand just as in this country we have different races of American so do other countries have different races. We black Americans as a whole need to open our eyes and minds and understand the false divisions. Those divisions keep us from understanding the plight of the African in Cuba, Grenada, Panama, Haiti,Bahamas,Dominican Republic, Aruba, Barbados, Jamaica, Brazil, Colombia, Bermuda, St.Lucia, Puerto Rico, Israel, and most important Africa.
The one thing the decedents of Africa all have in common is our communities around the world are among the most depressed and poverty stricken. Also suffer from extremely high infection rates and have the worst infant mortality. Let those be the divisions you focus on. People of African decent are suffering don’t help them divide us.
P.S. Don’t get upset when a person of color denies this. We have all been bred to be ignorant.
I had this conversation with a Dominican girl about 5 years ago, and she started crying. I felt horrible but, she thanked me after she did her own research. She said she always had questions people ignored.

People are so ignorant these days, they forget that the pigments of her skin “DOESN’T” define who we are, or what we can be, Grow the hell up….Although my ancestors might have Originated from somewhere doesn’t mean i am. People automatically try to play the OH she ain’t black or she can’t be Mixed, or she ain’t all the way black cause she has pretty eyes, GOD made us and all of us will be different. I’ve seen some dark skin people with mixed parents and it doesn’t make them less appealing its called genetics, just except who you are, and thanks lala for your statement, people are so damn disrespectful..

Foreign born blacks are trained to answer the question “what are you” in a different way than we in black america… they are trained to answer according to nationality, regionality, and culture… we are trained to respond with one of the official race categories found on census and eeo compliance docs…

word up Lala, im Dominican and people be amazed when i say that Im from Dominican Republic, they be like “i didnt know they were dark skin people in D.R” or ” you dont look Dominican” and I be asking them how do Dominicans or Spanish people look, or what they suppose to look like. Cuz in Dominican Republic, and Cuba or Puerto Rico we have a whole different types of people, light skin, dark skin.. is pathetic when i hear that.

thank you. . .one ting to those that thinks all black people came from the same slave ships. Please, por favor mi compadre, read your history. black people has always been in the Americas before slavery. Please it is very sad when the only thing that we can reference the farthest in history is slavery and the antebellum. Black people are all over the world not just here or in the continent, Afrika.

outside of afrika, where are most blacks are:

    1) India-between 150-200 million
    2)Brasil- 85% are blacks
3)puerto rico- 75% are blacks and boriquin
4)dominican Republic- 85% black and taino
    5)Haiti- 95%
6)places that are dominated by black folks or has black people:

Guyana, Jamaica, belize, bahamas, barbados and other west indian islands.Venezuela, columbia, panama, suriname, argentina, mexico and the rest of central and south america.

then theres places like Australia, New Zealand, hawaii, Micronesian islands, Palau, Islands in the philippines, Papua New guinea, Tahiti, Samoa, Fiji, Madagascar, Sri Lanka, etc. etc.

See African-Americans open your eyes, you are not the only black people in the world. However, your conditioned ways and the lens that you see world as will only harbor hatred and division between all of us. UNITY! UNITY! is the only way to being FREE.

    Jazz
My comment was not to start debate between us. But if you insist on semantics. lets have it.
I am completely aware of the Olmecs and other west African migrants that made the trip across the Atlantic. I am also aware that it is believed that Africans brought different crops, tools and religious practices that native Americans incorporated which includes the Carib islands and South America.
With that said. It is undoubtedly and factually true that the overwhelming majority of Africans in the western hemisphere came over on “the same Slave ships”. Read your history. All Places You and I both mentioned were colonies of Europe with Both native and African slaves. There were no free black populations during slavery in the west. Unless they lived in hiding in the mountains. They were not mingling with the Europeans. So the fact that there were blacks in the west prior to slavery is a non factor. The comment was not about African migration. It was about the myth that only some people are Black or of African decent. I am completely aware of African history and at no point did I say it began with slavery. What are you saying? Are you saying that Africans were the populations of the west prior to slavery? Now that would be false. The populations were Arawak, Taino, Carib, and other native Americans. There were a few Africans, but in know way were they the dominant populations. They became the dominant populations after and during slavery in some areas. Show me were the information is that says Africans were here in large numbers prior to Slavery. A couple hundred doesn’t cut it. The transatlantic was hundreds of millions. And India(Asia) is in the east. I’m talking about the west. Like I said previously Communities of African Decent are in the worst conditions of all people. That’s my real concern and that’s what matters.
We can talk about Kush,Nubia,Egypt,Benin,Kerma anytime. This wasn’t about that. And this wasn’t about Aboriginals. This was about teaching people that language doesn’t qualify or disqualify your “Blackness”.

    All day.

FIRST @mynamehereNJ… THIS IS A VERY FALSE AND COMPLETELY INACCURATE STATEMENT:

“I am completely aware of African history and at no point did I say it began with slavery. What are you saying? Are you saying that Africans were the populations of the west prior to slavery? Now that would be false. The populations were Arawak, Taino, Carib, and other native Americans. There were a few Africans, but in know way were they the dominant populations. ACTUALLY BLACK PEOPLE WERE HERE IN THE WEST LONNNNG BEFORE SLAVERY! I SUGGEST YOU PUT THE WHITE MANS BOOK DOWN AND START MAKING @SSUMPTIONS BASED ON THEIR HISTORY WHICH IS FALSE!

THE CARIB PEOPLE ARE BLACK SWEETY! BLACK AS THE NIGHT SKY! BLACKER THAN BLACK WITH AN AFRICAN TONGUE AND CULTURE. THEY ARE ACTUALLY FOUND IN CENTRAL AMERICA AND WERE THERE LONG BEFORE SOME WHITE MAN CAME ALONG AND CLAIMED THEY DROPPED THEM IN CENTRAL AMERICA.. DONT BELIEVE ME??? I BET YOU DO NOT EVEN KNOW WHAT A CARIB IS! IN FACT ALL OF THOSE INDIGENOUS POPULATIONS YOU MENTIONS ARE BLACK! AND YOU FORGOT THE WACHITAW WHO WERE ALSO IN THE AMERICAS LONG BEFORE SLAVERY AND THEY WERE BLACK AS WELL! BLACKER THAN BLACK! UNLEARN THE LIES AND LEARN THE TRUTH!

HERE IS A LINK TO WHAT THE CARIBS LOOK LIKE:

    http://www.cayetano.de/workshops.htm

I AM BELIZEAN (AND WE ARE NOT HISPANIC SO DONT ASK- *NOT* OF SPAIN)… I LOOK MIXED JUST LIKE LALA AND I GET THE EXACT SAME RESPONSE AS LALA….I AM NOT MIXED WITH CARIB BUT I DAMN SURE KNOW WHO AND WHAT THEY ARE AS THEY ARE AN INTEGRAL PART OF THE CULTURE IN BELIZE.

BLACK PEOPLE WENT EVERYWHERE.. WE WENT EVERYWHERE… BUT OUR PEOPLE KNEW HOW TO INTERGRATE POPULATIONS WITHOUT DESTROYING THEM. MUCH UNLIKE THE WHITE MAN… I BELIEVE THE FIRST PEOPLE TO SAIL THE EARTH LONG BEFORE ANY WHITE MAN WAS CALLED THE ARABIAN KNIGHTS.

THEY WERE BLACK PEOPLE JUST LIKE YOU… UNLEARN THE LIES AND LEARN THE TRUTH!

In North and South America, most people are expecting “Latinos”-formerly ‘hispanics’- to match the look of the SpeedyGonzalez cartoon- basically what a stereotypical Mexican looks like, or someone who looks like an established, rich, white person look-alike (camren diaz look).
Then you have Brasil, Panama and Caribbean Latinos, who largely contain the African mixes, along with Indian and White. The unique mixture of all three created us.
What whites and “hispanics”- the spanish speaking folks who think they’re white people- want you to believe is called the Spanish Experience. The “spanish experience” is the idea that blacks don’t exist in the Latin world, and only thing presented to the world are the white skinned ‘Latinos’. Colombia is a prime example of this, as Cartagena was a slave port and that’s how the blacks got there- but you’d think there are no Blacks there due to the campaign of the Spanish experience. Colombia purposely under-reports the black populations, so as to not have to provide support for their neighborhoods, and most are cut off. So this is why most people don’t think blacks exist in Latin America. Before the acceptance of the African side of the mixture, most were just saying they were ‘hispanic’. Spanish media is to blame for that. So that image put forward, by whites/indians of Latin America, helped create that idea in most people’s minds, as the blacks were under-represented, outside of such things as Latin Jazz and Salsa music. The result of that is also that many of the ‘black’ latinos also don’t want to be called ‘black’ either. Same post-slavery programming that has black Americans trying to whiten skin, get colored eye operations in Panama, and why you chicks wear fake straight hair weaves and wigs. It’s a slippery slope as an Afro-latino, and many are not ready to accept being ‘black’, to themselves, they’d quickly rush to tell you “I’m not black!” So Kudos to her for speaking up and shame of anyone questioning her.

If you read what I wrote you know that i said Africans did migrate from Africa before the slave trade. I in no way denied this.I made it a point to say all people of African decent are Black not just Americans. You need to learn how to understand what you read. But there was no Mass migration like the trans Atlantic slave trade. Also the British, Spanish, French and Portuguese enslaved the populations in the west anyway. And therefore 99% of Africans in the west are in fact decedents of slaves. Again the point I was making is just because we speak different languages doesn’t make us anymore or less Black. As far as Caribs you are wrong the original Caribs are a native tribe not of African decent. Although Africans did intermarry and become part of the tribe. They are known as Garifuna
You attack me and you have no clue what your talking about. Maybe you need hooked on Phonics then reread my post.

That’s so true! I get called white girl but it’s just ignorance! A lot of people have this thing where they say “if you look ___ you ARE ___ because that’s how people see you” … That may or may not be true, but deep down no matter what we look like we are who we are! I was raised with the culture of all my ethnicities so I consider myself all of them, not just the ones people say that I look like. And the only thing that looks “white” on me is my eye color and skin color. My shape, hair, voice, facial structure all come from my other racial background. It sort of hurts my feelings when people discredit my other races only because they are ignorant to genetics. Their are people half black and half white that look black … and some who look white. But in the end they are both and most likely have culture of both in their life and I feel like it’s just ignorant and ridiculous to say “you are what you look like”… That’s about the same as saying you are what you eat.

To me its simple, most ppl dont know or understand the difference between “Culture” and “Race”
Her culture is Latino, her race is of African decent. The term “Black” is used for descendants of Ex-American Slaves, who dont know or dont have cultural traditions…This is why we are always arguing about whats black; we have no clue, becuase we have no identity outside of the United States, we just know we came from one of the largest continents, Africa. Skin color is the only way of identifying ourselves, and only in America do people do this. … Its sad to say

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/blaXXX/ blaXXX

this is some wild stuff here, its… as if…her words…

make it seem like she’s pissed off that she doesn’t look *MORE LATINO* or more——White? And, I hope that explaining ‘her darkness & features’ to people all of the time doesn’t become a larger nuisance-in-Life, than she impresses as possibly the case now.

I can relate on some level to LaLa. People see my hair, when I say I am not fully black , some look as if I offended them. I am a Hispanic culture wise. Race wise I am a Garifuna(african and carib mix ancestry) and proud of it. My mom is a Garifuna from Belize and my father is a Garifuna from Honduras. Since he is from a spanish speaking country ,he is hispanic. Plus if my garifuna ancestors were not exiled from St.Vincent, he probably would just be speaking Garifuna and English like my mom. So I too just let people draw their own conclusions because I am not going to prove that I have indian(native) in my family to anyone.

Alot of ppl, dont even know, that black and spanish ppl come from the same slave bloodline. Because the slaves that didn’t come 2 N.America, went 2 S.America and the Caribbean’s. 46% of slaves went 2 brazil, thats why alot of them is so dark. And they take pride in their Afro-Latino heritage. The slaves intergrated with the Indians, and the Spaniards. Thats y alot of spanish ppl look black, and have black features. The only reason y they speak spanish, and Portuguese, is because the Spaniards made spanish the 1st language.

it’s called Afro-Latino mama.,it’s plenty Latinos people with dark skins, visit Puerto Rico, Brazil, Dominican Republic, Nicaragua, Honduras, etc..read before you have no idea about your own identity…lot of people born into different ethnic but raised a certain way..for instance I know LaLa is a VJ for MTV, etc..but never have affiliated herself with nothing concerning Latinas over the TV broadcast., if so, what network ? I’m Guyanese but Black colored skin, Blacks & other in U.S. always say i’m not Black, not true ,i’m from African descent but race thing only play like in U.S.talk people all the time in the industry of mixed race but probably grew up Black, so a lot like to claim anything but them own, thinking it’s bad to Black, etc…also all people who never left the country or traveled about please click link or paste that into your browser about the race thing when it come to claiming Latino, not define by color but others bring that into play….

I have African features so I am clearly a black man. I speak English, dont fuggin mean I am a englishman. My people have intermingled and mixed with any and every damm thing that moved through this continent, and no such thing as a pure African American we are fugging mixed just like all you fugging wanabee something else negroes.

is it really about “exotic negros” trying to be something that they aren’t or are they, like BLACKS in AMERICA choosing a term to define themselves…You guys think 4oo years ago they used the term “black” with each other? It’s so funny to see so many people called each other negros and “house nyggas” but what are you? Dumb nyggas? Coming on these weak azz forms and confusing yourselves with black-educated-activists

Christopher Columbus didnt discover America. Amerigo Vespucci did. lol i just had to clear that up. but back on topic.

some of these posts are funny. but yeah its hard for ppl of spanish descent or white descent to actually believe there are AFRICAN AMERICANS with blue, hazel and green eyes, nice hair with no 5th generation ties to any other race. but the truth is, if lala would have gone to telemundo, u are right they would have told her ass to go back to “niggaville” or she would have to prove herself more than any other latina on the show. its like now 2010, ppl want to be everything but what they actually are. I am proudly mixed but i do not forget the s**t my ancestors went through. My kids know who they are and know WHAT they are. One minute, someone wants to be cuban white native american puerto ricanfrench blah blah blah, but not even acnkowledge that half of those races are of african descent, then soon as someone says NIGGA they ready to flip out.like there are mixed women and men who only want to tie themselves to their african american side when its convienent.

    @J-Love

What tha fcuk is HALF SPANISH.

She damm sure aint Indian latin like Mexicans or Peruvians
She aint Caucasian latin like Argetineans

She looks black, she made her money catering to a black audience, I never heard the heifer speak spanish on MTV or VH1. Is she mad that people don’t know about her hispanic origin.

Why the fcuk she aint working for Telemundo?

Because she would be fetching their coffee and doughnuts instead of being in front of the camera. Latin media is racist than a mofo they would never put her black azz in front of a camera, only caucasian looking latinas get camera time.

Kudos to Lala Vazquez!! Latino is not a race, It is a cultural heritage of the former colonies of Spain and Portugal. You have latinos of every skin color and also of every mixture thereof. We tend to stereotype and in doing so we exclude and segregate. Most latinos go through life hearing the “but you don’t look latino” comment and it happens to all latinos who happen not to have American Indian blood. Lala is right 100%.

This is why Hispanic/Latino is considered to be an ethnic group in the U.S.–it encompasses blacks and others who have hispanic/latino roots. This is also an issue that is being pushed by arabs; many of them do not considered themselves to be caucasian or white–additionally, many arabs are black or have some black roots, but there is no accurate catagory for them.

On another topic, for the lil woman who says “Amerigo Vespucci” discovered america, ms_A_08, i disagree in that fact that i feel no one discovered america cuz how do you discover something that already has an indiginous people..the natives were already here and in being her how do you discover them? now you guy may or may not have been the first to come to america not being of native decent, but if i go by other teachings egyptions, aka africans had long ago been here and trading etc before anyone, no beef luv jus stating..

I feel what Lala is saying. I live it everyday here in Dallas, TX. “How did a black guy learn how to speak Spanish so fluently?” If I want to speak to my pops (Dominican) that’s what I’m going to have to do. I also throw in that if I want to speak to my moms side of the family (Haitian) I have to speak French. We don’t classify ourselves as not being black or anything. But we get questioned why are you fronting like you’re Hispanic. Best of both worlds, that’s what I tell’em. And it’s not that we don’t want to be associated with Black America, but when you hear from your in-laws after 15 years of being part of the family that you’re not “really black”, you’re like WTF. I know when I get pulled over they classify me as African-American. They don’t think it’s to funny when I tell them that I’m an Afratino-American. It is what it is.

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/chrishud1/ chrishud1

She’s spot on with the fact that being Latina/Latino is not a race, but an ethnicity. I always ask people the question that if you saw David Ortiz and Cameron Diaz walking on the street, what would you think they are? Both would be considered to be latino, but like LaLa mentioned, people come from various racial and ethnic backgrounds in Latin America. Really, the only difference between the US and Latin America is the European cultural basis, which is English for the US and Canada and much of the Caribbean, while it’s Spanish, as well as French, Portuguese and Italian(in Argentina) in Latin America. There’s also Dutch influence in Surinam, Curacao, the Netherland Antilles and parts of Saint Maarten.

1st of all its retarded that people are categorized in different “races” because of the color of his or her skin. People can be a black LATINO!!

@livingoxymoron… a lot of Puerto Ricans have African in them & so do Dominicans as well as other latinos… Like LALAA said DO SOME RESEARCH.

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/cubsfan1973/ cubsfan1973

This is for all the stupid people out there. The Latin race is a race of all nationalities from the whitest of white to the blackest of black.
The slave trade did not start here in the US. The slave trade was bigger in the West Indies, Carribean, and Spanish territories.
Most people don’t even know that the only country or in this case continent (Africa) with the most people of African Ancestory — and guess what, it is not even in the US — not by a long shot!!! Brazil has the most people of African ancestory other then the motherland of Africa, which surpasses the US by a long shot and in most of those countries, they have more connection to Africa than we do in the United States!!! Basically there are more people with more pure African blood than we do here in the States!!!
So to all the stupid people who do not learn about history and geography — get a book and read and learn.
LaLa, do your thing, the people who make the negative comments are the ones who did not learn in school and stay ignorant. Black people think that we are the only ones here other than Africa, but on the real, here in the US we only make up 13% of the population!!!
NOW THAT IS REAL TALK AND A REAL HISTORY LESSON!!!

ACTUALLY… this part is NOT TRUE:

” The slave trade was bigger in the West Indies, Carribean, and Spanish territories.”

America surpassed this because it took them MUCH LONGER to outlaw slavery… ALSO… the methods used here in the states, the practice of making generation after generation after generation….That was MAINLY practiced here in this country.

Black people from America really need to understand the difference of slavery as opposed to other places..American slaves were treated the absolute worst. The inhumanity thrust upon the American slave is unsurpassed by ANY.

I bet most of these black latinos dont know shyt about Arturo Alfonso Schomburg

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/A rturo_Alfonso_Schomburg

Arturo Alfonso Schomburg, also known as Arthur Schomburg, (January 24,1874 ⿿June 8, 1938), was a Puerto Rican historian, writer and activist in the United States who researched and raised awareness of the great contributions that Afro-Latin Americans and Afro-Americans have made to society. He was an important intellectual figure in the Harlem Renaissance. Over the years he collected literature, art, slave narratives and other materials of African history, which was purchased to become the basis of the Arthur Schomburg Center for Research in Black Culture, named in his honor, at the New York Public Library branch in Harlem.

    @moniQTee

It wasn’t that chattel slavery in the United States was worse than anywhere else, Other places such as the Carribean had a social buffer zone that mulattoes inhabhited, being a mulatto was considered being better than a black. This sort of backward thinking still goes on in parts of the Carribean especially in the Dominican Republic where they still subjugate and discriminate against darker skinned Dominicans. In America they had the one drop rule that seperated the races and tried to prevent race mixing, but was used to prevent black men from mixing with white women and not the other way around.

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/DameDivalicious/ DameDivalicious

cubsfan and moniQTee, I totally agree with you both. Back home where I am from you can not be ignorant on black history like what LaLa said thinking that in South America everybody is of one race when that is not true. The same applied for the West Indies too. I give LaLa props as a black latina for speaking out on this issue.

I mean keep it real find one person that isn’t mixed with something other than something else that they don’t show so obviously. Should we all just walk around with our family history in our wallets so we can display it to everyone everytime someone wants to know our race. Focus on something worth something, like a change!!!!

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/SomeKindaFine/ SomeKindaFine

@Moniqtee:The slave trade in America was outlawed before most carribean nations excluding Haiti, which took over the Dominican Republic,DR then gained its freedom from Haiti in the 1840′s (the spainards had no intention of freeing Dominicans). Slavery was legal in Puerto Rico until like the 1890′s as well in Cuba. I don’t know where this myth that slavery was easy in the carribean has come from, the slaves were brutalized just like in America and cutting sugar cane is not a easy task. Yes the slaves were able to retain some of their native language and religious beliefs but they were still treated as human chattle. Before research I too listened to and believed the notion that slavery was different in latin america and the carribean. Now slaves in England were treated much different than in America and it was well respected to have a dark “pure” African slave and this slave would often be taught proper English etiquite and allowed to sit at the dinner table(like a well behaved show piece).

We should request and demand that Africana studies be taught in our elementary, middle school and high schools. all people should take at least 1 African American history course or African history course that will information about not only the history of Africa but the trans-Atlantic slave trade and its ramifications for people of color around the globe. Recommended reading for ALL people should be: African American History: A Journeyof Liberation by Dr. Molefi Kete Asante. It describes the history and plight of ALL Africans of the African Diaspora and their descendants whether they were transported to the Caribbean, South America, Central America, Europe or America.
