If you’ve ever seen a single televised interview with Gabourey Sidibe, star of the much-acclaimed film “Precious,” you know right away that she’s a hilarious, extremely charming and seemingly confident woman. In Harper’s Bazaar, she tells how she got that way. Here are some quotes:

ON HER BRAND NEW BOYFRIEND: “He’s a regular guy working a regular job, and I’m scared to take him anywhere”

ON THE MOVIES IMPACT: “Roger Ebert! His review was basically a love letter.” She gets frustrated, though, when she reads another kind of synopsis: ‘Gabby Sidibe is an overweight black girl who is illiterate and pregnant by her father,’ ” she parrots. “Look, I am black. I’m also overweight, but that’s not the point of the story. The point is the abuse and her bravery. This stuff happens to skinny people, to white people, to so many different people that they’ve missed the point if they say it’s about a fat girl.”

ON CONFIDENCE: “It came late, too late in my life. Something like 21. I just know that I was tired. I was tired of thinking less of myself because others did. People always ask me, ‘You have so much confidence. Where did that come from?’ It came from me. One day I decided that I was beautiful, and so I carried out my life as if I was a beautiful girl. I wear colors that I really like, I wear makeup that makes me feel pretty, and it really helps. It doesn’t have anything to do with how the world perceives you. What matters is what you see. Your body is your temple, it’s your home, and,” she chuckles, “you must decorate it.”

ON BARACK: She’s heard Precious may have been screened in the White House. “I heard a rumor that President Obama knew who I was. You know, because Oprah is all up in his shizz, so I think that he might be aware of me.” She laughs. “But then again, he’s also aware of the whole world. He’s probably a little brain busy.”

ON IF SHE MET HERSELF AT A PARTY: “I’d think I was pretty. Is that weird? I might be really interested in me. I’d probably watch myself the whole night, then I’d come over and say, ‘You’re a really good dancer.’ We’d talk for a while and then,” she says, starting to giggle at the silliness of it, “we’d go home separately to avoid the paparazzi.”

ON YOGA: “I hate yoga so much. Like, if yoga was a person, I’d stab them.” At the end of the day, “it doesn’t make any sense to kill yourself, because who are you trying to be beautiful for? It’s a mind game, not a body game.”

ON PHOTO SHOOTS: “I feel like a model. It justifies everyone in my life who told me I wouldn’t be anything until I lost weight. It justifies that little girl who cried because she didn’t think she could be in front of the camera. And it’s for other girls who feel like they can’t do this or that and feel like they’re not pretty and not worthy of having their photo taken.”

ON BEING RECOGNIZED: “We’ve all been to a place where we’ve felt ignored and unsupported, so it just affirms the meaning of the film’s story to me,” she says of the adoring throngs. “Ashley Olsen hugged me for a long time — like rubbing my back and everything — and said, ‘I am so proud of you.’ How cute is that?” [But] it’s harder to get through places. It really is.”

ON HER “LOOK”: Sidibe’s favorite decoration to date is the red David Meister dress she wore to the L.A. premiere of Precious. “It was so va va voom, my boobs looked so good in it. I had diamonds on too. Diamonds really do it.” While her size makes off-the-runway looks an impossibility, she’s not that bothered. “I don’t really care because it gives me more freedom. I don’t just flip through a magazine and say, ‘I want this,’ because I can’t, really.”

ON “MAKING IT”: “I’m just happy to show up. So, I don’t have any plans of changing because I really, really like myself. It took a lot of work to get here. It’s reaffirming for people to meet me and ask me not to change.” She smiles, slyly deflating her you-go-girl balloon. “And now we cry.”

Now y’all know I had to be the “Be happy Im The fat girl” spoiler…This she said, and I quote, was VERY stupid…

““I hate yoga so much. Like, if yoga was a person, I’d stab them.” At the end of the day, “it doesn’t make any sense to kill yourself, because who are you trying to be beautiful for? It’s a mind game, not a body game.””….
If yoga was a person I would stab them? Are you kidding me? So shes basically saying dont exercise or take care of yourself? She has a SAD state of mind if she thinks ‘killing yourself’ is synonymous with being HEALTHY! Yoga is VERY healthy, calming, and introspective. At her size nothing should be about a ‘mind game’…it should be about a “I shouldnt be this damn big and UNHEALTHY game”. I am all for love yourself at all costs, but she is clearly BULLSHYTIN herself into thinking that what she looks like should be and is acceptable…If she is so very popular and blah blah blah..why is the FIRST time we see her in a movie about a fat, unhappy, illiterate black girl in the hood? If her looks were so undeniably swift, she would have stolen the part of Thandie Newton in MI:2 with Tom Cruise, OR the part of Tina Turner in “Whats Love’. I am so disgusted with all this love yourself no matter how utterly big and unhealthy you are. I would NEVER teach or allow someone like this chick to brainwash my daughters into thinking being overweight/morbidly OBESE is alright…its not…smh…

i applaud her optimism and outlook (damn that’s gotta take a helluva lotta strength), but why is there even an article on this? it’s like telling women they’re not expected to be confident if they’re overweight. it’s the equivalent of when people say “you’re pretty for a dark-skinned girl” or “you’re so articulate for a black person.” if i was Gabby i’d be offended…

i dont know why people dont get that this girl is in her stride and is comfortable in her own skin? Gabby has a lot going on for here and her outlook and attitude is going to be her strongets asset. i hate when people are not satisfied with a person being cool with them just because they look different and THEY’RE THE ONES WITH A PROBLEM WITH IT, WEATHER BLANTANTLY SAYING IT, OR IN A SMILE IN YOUR FACE ROUND ABOUT WAY all i got to say is, go Gabby!

Lol@coming to the conclusion that if she doesn’t like yoga she won’t exercise at all but, I digress.

I think she has a cute little face.

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/cubsfan1973/ cubsfan1973

She is only saying that because she was in the lead in that movie. A lot of people get confidence when they get that big shot (this goes for unattractive male and females alike!!!)
If you really think about it!!!
Plus, she is not even a cute fat chick!!! She is straight up UGLY!!!
She hates yoga – we can see that — but I bet she sure loves her a big bucket of chicken!!!
She only excercises with her hand, picking up that leg or thigh!!!

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/cubsfan1973/ cubsfan1973

Plus another thing, what about the health issues!?!?!? I have two daughters and I make sure they eat healthy. Granted they are very young 4 and 2, but I am a diabetic and I am not even no way overweight. I have to watch out what I eat ( I am in the slim percentage that is underweight for a diabetic)
I am tired of hearing the love me the way I am (meaning FAT) This has no racial barrier on this subject. If you have children, don’t you want to see them grow up!?!?!? Living an unhealthy lifestyle is only one step closer going into that coffin!!!
Oh yeah off the subject, do you really think you will see her in many major movie roles (ONLY IF IT CALLS FOR A FAT WOMAN TO PLAY) and you really do not see those. They will pick a Jennifer Hudson to play the overweight actress, but they will pass Gabourey to the side!!! In Precious, they had to find a grotesque woman to play her part for the realness.
And that is nothing more than the truth. She is more of a charity case. You wont hear from her in the near future, unless she gets her stomach stapled, and she is not attractive to begin with. At least Jennifer Hudson is attractive for a BBW!!!

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/cubsfan1973/ cubsfan1973

She has a boyfriend now, let’s be real — she would not have him if she was not in that movie — that is too real!!!
That happens to males and females in the entertainment industry — they get famous then people want to date them.
Here are some examples — Jay Z said it in one of his rhymes — Mike Jones said it in his rhymes
and those are guys!!! Flavor Flav is a great example!!! I love New York (Tiffany Pollard) IS ONE UGLY WOMAN!!! not to mention her mother (are you sure she is really a woman) Wendy Williams looks like RuPaul’s hand me downs, and the list keeps going and going.
I will say that I am far from a 10 and not on the Denzel status, but I can hold my own and can see the real deal. If I was famous, I know I would have mad women beating down my door!!!

[...] Sidibe simply exudes confidence and poise—so much so that Precious director Lee Daniels calls her “unequivocally comfortable in her body…Either she’s in a state of denial or she’s so elevated that she’s on another level.”  Refusing to be a wilting flower, hiding like Carnie Wilson of the girl group Wilson Phillips, Sidibe describes herself as “pretty,” and on photo shoots admits she feels “like a model.” [...]
