I checked out the clip on the actual news station’s website (it was a bit longer); there was previous violence in the relationship, which makes me wonder why didn’t one of them walk away? It should have never come to this, but it was only a matter of time before someone ended up dead. She was clearly remorseful and because she pleaded guilty, she got such leniency. I don’t think she actually meant to kill him, but again–someone should have walked away.

After reading some of the horrible comments people have made about fat women, it really shows how mean spirited human beings can be. Many of these comments are made by the same people who complain how a black man’s life isn’t deemed of high value; yet, they degrade a person because of their size, and THAT itself is devaluing a person. It’s one thing to have personal preference, but quite another to be so hateful to a group.

I hope that many of you who sit there and judge any large person because of their size end up being ostracized because of a physical feature that YOU have–be it your skin, your hair, whatever…Yes, some people who simply do not have the discipline to lose the weight–but have you ever walked in that person’s shoes to understand why. Many overweight people have psychological issues that stem from childhood trauma and/or abuse; they eat away their problems because that is all they know. It is very hard to break old habits. Take a look at yourselves, for instance…some of you smoke, drink, are promiscuous, cuss, are irresponsible with your credit, shop too much, indulge too much–I could go on, but my point is that we all have vices, but it’s just that big people’s problems manifest themselves externally–whereas, many you who sit there and cast stones have behavior patterns that need to be broken just like people who overeat or don’t exercise. Oh, and not ALL fat people are lazy and eat too much; some actually have conditions that have caused them to be overweight.

To Azrael3. Last i time i checked they have treatment for psychological problems an programs for it too. but what are your issues?

Objectively speaking, being overweight is unhealthy. I definitely advocate weight loss. That said, people on here need to grow the f u ck up and learn to walk in someone else’s shoes.

What trips me out is how a person may look or even talk about a fat person that they don’t even know–a complete stranger. Those people will say whatever they please, thinking that they have a right to comment–but they don’t even know if that person is on a program for weight loss. Hell, that person may have already lost 50 lbs–but some of you negros still think you have a right to say some shyt about someone.

SYS, if you were paying attention to what I said, I acknowledged in a previous post that what is considered attractive boils down to personal choice. I have no problem with that. Therefore, your personal anecdote is really irrelevant. However, there is no need to tear someone down because of their weight or for any other reason. We need to stop giving drive-by judgements of people. Like I wrote before, there are people who are quick to bemoan the plight of the black man, or the plight of the black woman and use history to leverage the excuses as to why these groups fail, have issues, etc.. We even have more sympathy for alcoholics and drug users–and those two vices are not as easy to access as food! Yet, we still incrimminate fat people.

You are correct; health isn’t always determined by one’s waist size, nor would I ever suggest that all women be a size two. 150 lbs may be a healthy weight on one person, but not on another. Also, I don’t think anyone would disagree with you about obesity being unhealthy. However, most reasonable people on this thread (who are countering those who blatantly hate big people) think it is unfair to demean another human being for their size or for any other feature that they possess. This type of discrimmination can affect a person for years, sometimes a lifetime. People do not like to be criticized–especially for how they look. It is a deeply personal issue. This is why so many young women have eating disorders (including overeating). No one is saying, “hey, your uncle molested you–it’s okay to wolf down three burgers”. What most of us are saying is, “hey, I have to love you as a human being for where you are now.”

You are correct that black Americans have an alarmingly high population of obesity (so do Native American Indians, Hispanic/Latino Americans). There are a few reasons for this: cooking and eating habits are/can be behavioral patterns passed on from generation to generation. A culture’s food is one of the vestiges of that culture’s identity that lingers. Historically, blacks had to make do with whatever was available–hence, the scraps of the animals that were seasoned and highly salted (along with the vegetables and other non-meat items) to make more palatable. This type of cooking is still passed on to the younger generation.

The second reason is that most obesity, as experts have found, are in poorer/lower-class areas (The Food Research and Action Center ). It is a paradox that people who are at or below the poverty line have a higher incident of obesity, but this is because most families will subsitute higher quality food for cheaper, high-calorie food…and this is not to say suggest that this is all contributed to fast food–it’s not. If you look in the grocery stores, most cheaper food has high fat, high sugar or high salt content (or all three). Rice and other complex starches are cheaper to buy, but they also contribute to obesity because the carbohydrates convert to fat if not burned off (and let’s face it; most poorer people do not exercise to get fit).

The result of all of this? Obesity. I am not disagreeing with what you are saying about the problems that being overweight brings–no one here is justifying obesity, but I really felt the need to connect a few dots for you because you are giving the impression that all big people are lazy glutons who sit around all day–kind of like the mother in “Precious”. That is not always the case. It can be a long-reaching issue.

My suggestion is to get involved–and educate children and their parents about healthy eating. If people like you are so concerned about obesity in your community, take an hour each week to teach a parent about reading labels and how to stretch their grocery money, but be able to buy the right things. Refer people to (free) support groups. Do something other than criticize. You’ll be a lot more helpful if you do.
