While The Princess and the Frog is the first “major” African American character for a Disney movie, Disney has made several full length animated movies featuring characters of different ethnicities. Check out the clips below:

Aladdin -

Hercules (The Muses) -

The Jungle Book -

Pocahontas -

Mulan -

What do you think of these portrayals of different ethnicities? Comment and Tell us!

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/MsLeo26/ MsLeo26

Why is when they do put A-A voices in as supporting characters they always have to be animals? i.e. The Lion king , Mulan , and that movie the Song of the South where they made the Splash mountain ride from. What da heezy is up with that?!

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/blackfilmmaker1/ blackfilmmaker1

    not one black man.

I think Disney has use black voice actors before. Hell James Earl Jones played Simba’s dad in the Lion King.

@ket_ket Eddie Murphy was the voice of Mushu in Mulan @ MsLeo the Muses in Hercules were all voices of African American women

If you don’t like how Disney make cartoons then make some cartoons…

You can’t get pissed off that white people don’t try to represent black people in their art…

How often do black people go out of their way to represent white people in theirs in a positive manner?

    Stop whining…

Very good point. There is no reason to complain in this article and once again pull the race card. Those that have been the voices in movies were wonderful and if that is what the producer of the film wants then so be it. However, that does not conclude that it is a race issue. The craft and artistic ways are used wonderfully and there should be applause for those blacks that make it possible. To God Be The Glory.

I think disney show make an animated version of the broadway musical Aida. It is a story reflecting the african american culture… the closest disney has gotten to black people was the lion king because its based in africa… HOW BEAT UP IS THAT?! LOL

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/619mami/ 619mami

@ket I see what you’re sayin about the main characters.

Just like live action movies animated movies take the best actor or actress willing to do the part, I haven’t seen one person on here take that into account, but then if Disney contacted only AA people to play those parts then that could be considered racism. It’s alittle ridiculous how much a person wants to read into things. As someone studying to work in this industry I can say creating animated movies is hard work…if at the end of the day all ppl took from it was -this-, I’d say make your own damn children’s entertainment then lol

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/blackdiamond184/ blackdiamond184

Some of these really bring back memories. I am not stuck on race like a lot of people on this website, I just like the stories and the happy endings.

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/blackdiamond184/ blackdiamond184

Some of these bring back memories. I never thought about the race behind any of these caracters, Apperently this website sure does. Throughout my childhood I have seen disney movies and still watch them now, I have never had a conversation about a disney movie dealing with the ethniticity of the charaters. It is ashame that race is all this website identify’s with.

BP ALWAYS PUTTING SOMETHING SLIGHTLY RACIAL IN THEIR NEWS IM TIRED OF IT

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/Ebony_Punk_Princess/ Ebony_Punk_Princess

Yea about that…. I loved All of these movies, especially ~Aladdin~ and ~Pocahontas~. The only crime I see is BP not putting up a video of Sebastian from ~The Little Mermaid~ singing “Under The Sea”

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/royroy1/ royroy1

UM THE ONLY “BLACK” DISNEY CHARACTER IS THE MUSES FROM HURCULES THE OTHERS ARE INDIAN ASIAN OR NATIVE AMERICAN?

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/UnprettySilence/ UnprettySilence

Ethnic does not apply only to African American.

If you are tired of what they are posting, stop reading it.

Under the Sea is the s**t, mad Caribbean influences.

And no matter what Disney lacks, people still love it. Hell I still love it. Children no matter race love it, my children will love it and unless you have some sort of strong unnecessary vendetta against Disney, your children will love it. Point blank end of story.

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/Aries_Diva31/ Aries_Diva31

I feel u all I grew up on disney and never thought of the colors of the characters. I am 32 and still enjoy disney movies cartoons and some shows……racism has been around forever but we are rising past that so I thought I mean damn we have a black president now BP let it go I mean they are starting to create interacial relationships on their show and all just relax and enjoy our progress and prepare for more progress

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/Teebabysexygirl/ Teebabysexygirl

i think the point of this posting was to release some of the tension that some people feel toward Disney, some there are some people that feel that Disney is identifying with all ethnicities and only sticking to a white audience as far as it goes with characters, so i’m sure this posting was just to point out that there has always been some cultural representation in these films, PERIOD.

kay. i thouhgt it was kinda funny that the only there was no real black princess in disney. hell the only afican tale they had was the lion king and the leads (nala and simba) young white/mixed and then older white/white. so immagine my suprise when i saw the promo for the princess and the frog……kay. and lets not for get about Tink. i say all that to say this. Don’t get it twisted. disney was racsists. it was the 20′ to 60′s. but the old regime is slowly diying out. there top animator is latin so i’m cool with it….and by the way why is every body making such a fuss over the light skinned prince. like really check the make up of nola pre-katrina. there were as many black people as there were mixed (black-latin creole mulatto black indians YES CHEROKEE NATION you got black people in ya tribe stop trippin) so that don’t bother me that much. what i wanna see is when they get the swaggar enough to do big ALL THE WAY BLACK. we’ll see……..

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/Nappy_N_Happy/ Nappy_N_Happy

I guess this excuses the fact they (disney) exploit Hati (brown and black people). I guess i won’t get a topic on that issue which is far more substantial then some “soul” character.

To me it doesnt matter if disney was or is raciest i grew up on disney movies i knw alot of ppl that grew up on disney movies Hell as we speak my daughter is watching one now i believe the classic and timeless stories spark imagination in a childs mind not to mention there are values to be taken frum everyone of there movies when your a child your not lookin at them and sayin that raciest or why are they portraying balcks or latinos like that NA i mean what lil girl growing up didnt wanna be a princess based of either one or all of the various types of princesses frum sleepin beauty to beauty and the beast to aladdin

well not that i didn’t like the movies when i was younger.. but disney is known for including stereotypes in their animated films.. many have protested the distribution of the films.. but i guess it all about the money at the end of the day.. they don’t care about the damage it causes

Well, kids may not know the difference but adults who buy the product do. the point is inadvertedly is that the expiot the talents of ethinic people. And get rich in the process. Now disney can make a movie about whatever they want but if are going to recognise that africans have talent are prepared to use it to convey other characters that are a part of a completely different ethnicity or just an animal. That shows they rather use our talents than recognize black people for who they are represent them or their culture or story. There is a story from Egypt to the carribean to Haiti to America they just simply do not see it as a money maker because there are a lot of people who support disney who do not recongnise the black race and equal. I would be very surprised if they ever made a disney about African or African American culture.

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/Sunshyne_defined/ Sunshyne_defined

You want black/ethnic toons fr your kids? Make ‘em. Don’t expect the racist Disney company to do so. And, I’m not being harsh on the company, they are racist, hell, Walt Disney was racist, and more than likely has passed his doctrine on. You want something that represents us, and well, do it yourself, don’t expect another to do so. It won’t happen.

F**k what yall talking about… That Pocahontas song tellin the truth about white people. For real. LOL Anyway we got our black princess out of Disney even though she a lil country. Can’t wait to here what song she going to kill. lol And how did the Lion King get left off? They blacker than everybody.

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/Omitunde/ Omitunde

I am tired of black children always wanting images of Hanna Montana and Barbie the Princess as their picks. I teach my grand daughter to appreciate and embrace her ethnicity and I filter her tv shows, dolls, books, and anything that does not give equal time to her as a black girl.

The ethnic images here are watered down versions of the real truth with the exception of Mulan. It is more culturally correct than Aladdin, Jungle Book or Pocahontas.

There are not black people on most popular shows. When there is a black person they are portrayed in slapstick style. Bucking and rolling their eyes like a minstrel.

I watch all of the shows my grand daughter watches because the messages are subtle but strong.

For example on ICarly, these kids get to do whatever they want. Her irresponsible but artistically talented older brother is in charge. There are seldom parents in the picture and when the one parent in the story shows up, she is portrayed as goofey.

I think Disney cheats black children out of positive images but they get the money b/c most black parents are too lazy to do the work to promote positive images for their children.
