This is coming from a dark skinned woman, who has heard it all. I’ve been cute to be dark, i’ve had men say they usually don’t do dark but for me they would make and exception, and all types of other mess. I say who cares. it’s not that damn deep. if they wanna use a light skinned woman, fine. it’s not that deep. and like the writer says, video isn’t even good.

She does look white when you first look at her, but then she kinda look Egyptian too and if she is, then she cant be white. I dont see why anyone would care what she is. They arent paying her or has anything to do with the video, the artist, or this woman. Now for my preference…..I prefere dark skinned women over any other shade of skin. It looks like she could be some form of hispanic, idk. I do know that she is very pretty. I was a lil confused because he did use a racially ambiguous girl instead of a black girl only because his targeted audience is black. That is just good marketing skills to appeal to the people who are most likely going to be buying your cd’s, but like stated in this article “She’s just a pretty girl who beat out a bunch of other pretty girls to get the spot in this video”. I do wanna say that I think they could have done a lot more with the video. It was a lot of walking around and not very sexy…id give it a pg-7 rating lol. It could have at least made pg 13. Like the Usher video for trading places….now that was HOT. I feel like the video could have been sexed up a lil, at least a lil more close interation between them two. Ex. both of them could have appeard to be topless and pressed up against eachother while all we see is their backs, with technology today they could have pulled that one off easily. Here is my final opinion….Awesome song, average video, the video doesn’t do the song justice and Jeremih should get a different director for the next video and he’ll probably need a really good song as well if he wants to at the very least go gold. OF COURSE….these are my opinions, im not in the music biz. Im just a fan of music in general.

OK, I watched a little of it and decided Fk’it. I’m getting into the music industry.
The kids down the way came up with this song called “Greasy Fried Doughnuts” that had more substance then all that…iiiiii! We get it! You sttttuter! Personally I’m sick of watchin folks have sex. It’s just depressing if you ain’t getting any. Since I could not engage w/the image of the stuter or her strappy sandels, I never got to the skin color thing. I have to put the brakes on somewhere. LacedBBW, I think the light skin is more about market share. Blk African is extreme to Scandinavian. Both has it’s beauties and uglies. Well, I am personally tired of watching videos plastered with the aforementioned “ethnically ambiguous” women. I mean when did it become wrong to have a black male artist fawning over a beautiful black woman in his video that actually looked like his mother or his “sister”. Let’s face facts this guys fan base more than likely is made up of a majority of dark or brown skinned women. So why doesn’t he want to accomodate them? I guess the artists need to be more vocal when it comes to these things. The video was alright inspite of the casting preferences. She is a beautiful girl. Question though… why was she walking so bad in those heels. I guess her audition didn’t require her to walk… go figure. LOL

The music industry has always been about image. I believe we miss out on some of the best artist because they don’t fit into a ideal look of what the “industry” thinks will sale. So this video is the same. Its an image I think the reason its offensive to some is we have so much variety as a people but you don’t see it in the media. Dudes like womyn of all shapes, size, shades and features. With that in mind, many of us also like variety and are more worried about what’s inside then what’s outside. Check his other videos, if he uses the same “girl” all the time, maybe she’s the one for him, if he uses the same “look” maybe that’s his “type” and if he uses a variety…well maybe he’s just lettin’ you know he’s a playa or he’d like to be. she’s not white!!! that is obvious in the video; she just has light colored eyes which may or may not mean she has mixed heritage. Either way the media is the media and their definition of pretty (long hair (real or fake), bright skin, thin, and tall will most of the time win out over dark complexion, short(5’5), size 12 and 170 lbs like me.

Its funny how whenever there is a beautiful looking dark skin girl in a video I always say so, I don’t automatically think of them as a hoe, or goldigger or hood rat, or whatever else yall were talkin. It seems like most of the judgement comes from their own, and thats the saddest part of it all. And why is it that whenever there is a hip hop or r&b video made by a black artist, and they choose to put a light skin girl as the leading lady there is always ridicule about it, why are they required to have a dark skin girl, is it not okay for them to show their attraction and appreciation for a light skin girl, and there have been plenty of videos that have had dark skin girls as the leading lady and that is a great thing, i just think the hate, bitterness, and ridicule needs to stop…period

I am a dark chick and I am totally ok with myself. I do believe that it is unforunate that we as a race and outside of our race have color complex issue but that is the issue of whomever allows that to be their problem and it has nothing to do with me. I am secure in who I am and I wish to be nothing other than myself. I have dated men in all shades and color and I have rated one against the other. So I really believe people need to look in the mirror and get a grip. We are all beautiful in the sight of God.

I have never posted before on here but it’s a first for anything. I personally think that it should not matter who plays a part of a video. If the people are attractive, that is what sells. So what if the woman is black, white, yellow or what ever color is out there. She is a pretty woman and she works well with the singer Jeremih. So she beat out others. That is the look that the producers were looking for, sex appeal. Personally, I enjoy the song. It has been quite awhile for one that is so appealing that can reach many ages.

I think the issue is being oversimplified here..It appears, on the surface, that people’s beef is “just” the race of the female in the video. Ideally, that shouldn’t be a factor, but non-light-skinned black women didn’t create the issue. We have mainstream media to thank for that. As a society, we have been conditioned to accept a more Euro-centric appearance as the standard of beauty, and therefore, more aesthetically pleasing. Further, as a people, we are victim of the Stockholm Syndrome, which is what causes us not to question the continued psychological abuse we experience & are exposed to daily through various media. Further, it’s almost certain that there were non-light-skinned women who auditioned for the part, PERFORMED better, and were passed over due to their non-appealing complexion(read: dark skin). There’s a good chance that her only claim to that opportunity(I use the term loosely) WAS her complexion. Let’s be honest. It’s not as though that’s a secret; that’s a well-known, established FACT. BTW, when was the last time you saw a “woman of color” in a Savage Garden, Cold Play or Smashing Pumpkins video? Can someone do the research on that? Short answer? Never! Let’s call a spade a spade, people. The finger pointing is in the wrong direction; the people with the problem are the ones with a color preference toward the light skin people they parade before our impressionable male children, conditioning them to reject or deny what is their essence or heritage. The truth is dark skinned women are not featured in videos as much as lighter skinned women. You say you are “an equal opportunity employer.” If this is true you would recogize that this video, along with the majority of the other rap/r&b or Hip hop music videos, is yet another that adds to the discrimination of darker skinned women. Adversity and opposition to this video, and the others just like it, was inevitable. Rock/punk/country music videos dont feature dark skinned or black women as the main women in their videos most of the time, so why do Hip hop/R&B and Rap Video’s feature light skinned or white women as the main women in their videos most of the time? Simple answer: They know how ridiculous it is.

Although definitely loving the song and all (or at least MOST of it’s contents in the video)… I was very disappointed as my daughter was as well that a black woman was not the essence of the birthday sex… Why was that? I agree with “Upper _Class, it is very important to discuss these issues. I am a dark skinned sister in my mid 30’s and I experienced it all. One side of my family is light skinned; the other side is mostly dark skinned. So for me it started out when I was a child and continued from there. Where I come from most black men do not love themselves or have love for black woman. It’s funny to hear them (black men) say they love their mamas but hate black woman and will never be with a black women… To me that means he hates the woman who brought him into this world and every other black woman who was in his life (granda’s, sisters and so on). I think somewhere along the lines there was a miss-communication, miss-understanding of how strong and important a black woman is and has been in our history. We as black women have been VERY IMPORTANT in the lives of black children as well as white children.
As for videos, Ladies remember dark skinned or light skinned love yourself. Look @ some of the examples of some of our black men n who they have fallen to (OJ, Tiger) need I say more….

Personally, I would like to see more positive images of Black women on television, especially BET. As a Black woman, I feel there are too many negative images posted, glamorized and depicted, in regards to Black women in videos and the media at large. Color remains an issue. I had a cousin that lived in Puerto Rico and visited him He was friendly with this one particular family that owned some type of business. They were congenial to me but my cousin told me how they treated the dark skinned Puerto Ricans. I bought a book about the island while there, the book said all puerto Ricans learned to speak English but refused to speak it when they came to the US especially if they were dark skinned because they didn’t want people to think they were Black.Fisk university woudn’t allow blaks to enroll there if you were darker than a paper bag,this a predominately Black university.I’ve experienced this color thing. My neighbor is VERY light.She doesn’t but a lot of her relatives pass and have limited use for the relatives that do.Try two people applying for the same job,one light the other dark.If either gets it more than likely it will be the light one. I love my people to death but when we respond as you did it just reminds us that some of us ligther skinned folks think they are better than some of us darker skinned folks thus keeping us separated instead of keeping us together thus being WRONG.
