On a recent trip to Sierra Leone, actress Salma Hayek allowed “Nightline” cameras to follow her around while she performed humanitarian efforts. One effort, however, both touched the hearts of many and raised the eyebrows of many others.

Upon hearing of a newborn baby whose mother was unable to produce milk, Salma decided to breastfeed the infant herself, and told the story of her great grandmother who did the same thing to another woman in need.

While many find this to be conceptually beautiful, others have turned their noses up at the idea of nursing someone else’s child. Watch the video below and tell us what you think.

I sure would’nt mind being that child lol.

if i couldn’t produce milk for my child, i would want it to get fed, but im not sure i would let a stranger do it for me, but im sure, desperate times call for desperate measures too…

i guess im indifferent towards it, because it all depends on the situation the mothers in, and if she gives the person consent or asks her too it really shouldn’t be anyone else s business other wise.

Americans can be the most arrogant group of people I have ever seen. I am an american citizen, born in US territory, so I am not a foreigner.

It is so sad and pathetic how cynic people have become about people who want to do something for the benefit of someone else, rather than themselves.

I applaud Salma for having the ability to see beyond herself and not think about the backlash she is sure getting from people and media around the world for such a selfless act of love.

Some say she’s a stranger to this child without realizing we are all HUMANS and thus, connected to each other.

Kudos to Salma for having the heart to stand out in a world of apathy.

This is something that most of us wouldnt think of doing. Charity with action is love. Ms. Hayek is to be applauded. What do WE do for ourselves?

I’m not a mother yet but I do know that any good mother automatically knows her duty. What Salma did took courage, who knows what could’ve happened to that baby. We have been conditioned to see the problems of others and look away. There are so many children that are dying, starving and hungry the breast milk from a pregnant mother or nursing mother could save the life of a child. The only reason why this is even an issue is because the baby is black. Don’t beat around the bush about it and its sad that that is an issue. What if she would have seen that child in need and walked away what would be the stories written about her then. What she did is no different than a person going out to give blood or even signing up to be a bone marrow donor for a perfect stranger to keep another human being alive. Get over it and go back to your ridiculous reports of Rhianna and Chris Brown. Thanx

WOW! This is absolutely an incredibly selfless act on Salma’s behalf. I applaud her generosity and courage! It’s really nice to see there are still some good natured people left in the world!

What she did took courage and strength. Americans are the most arrogant people and boogie people(I am American born and raised) Ask yourself this question If that was you and that was your child wouldn’t you want someone to help you? She did what the Lord has callede is us all to do! She is her Brother (Sisters) keeper.

I must applaud Salma for her most selfless act and I must also remind those ignorant of history that pregnant African slaves did the same for babies of the slavemaster’s during that time in American history. This act just shows that Salma Hayek looks at people of the world as just people and not colors. Many could learn from her example!!

Without a doubt this is one of the most selfless acts anyone could ever do ! Ive always been a fan of this couragous woman(of course for the obvious reasons) but NOW…i worship this wonderful wonderful woman. Selma, youre now my hero.

When I first saw this I thought – ok, that’s going too far. But that changed so quickly! See, that’s the conditioning I have of being in America. It’s almost like elite or something. I have no kids and want some. And I had to quickly understand that this was a child in need. I don’t care what society thinks! What’s right is right. And it takes leaving this country for people to realize that. We are conditioned just as much as a government ran media country is. Plus, you RARELY see someone of Spanish origin in her position go to, of all places, AFRICA to help like she is. I think it’s more than courage. I think it’s common sense. Good job Salma! God bless you and all your wonderful efforts. And thank you for showing people like me you can never go too far to help those in true need.

I am not against it at all… at first when i read the title I was confused… But I got to thinking that i really wanted to breast feed my daughter and I wish I would and if some one was availible to produce than I wouldnt mind even if its to produce in a bottle. Not everyone has the gift of producing milk and it is beautiful that you are able to do so…

What she has done is just a vary small payback to our black mothers who from slaver did that vary same thing for years for all them whit babies, and they was call’d “wet-nurse”. Why is it when white people do some thing all the world wants to give them the “hi 5″ on that thing, but when it’s us, people-of-color, no wants to hear or know about it, unless we’r doing wrong? Here it is the woman of color, black woman, was “wet-nurses for years in slaver time and no one gave a damn about what they “had to giveup”, konw your “Black History” my black sisters and my borthers, if you don’t know all of your pass how can you be moven forword.

    1. Salma Hayek isn’t white.
    2. What she did is completely natural. I think the only reason why it’s “raising” eyebrows is because she’s a celebrity. Not saying that if she wasn’t she would get as much attention, but more along the lines of, she’s rich and popular and doesn’t HAVE to do this. She did it because she was able and wanted too. There aren’t very many people in her position who would go as far. They might throw some money here and there, but this is up close and personal. Good for her.

To respond to Loki_D_Wolf who said:

“Plus, you RARELY see someone of Spanish origin in her position go to, of all places, AFRICA to help like she is.”

I disagree that it is rare to see other minorities, particularly of HISPANIC descent/origin to participate in volunteer activities of some form in places like Africa, as you mentioned.

What I do believe is that we don’t hear about the selfless acts of these people.

Again, Salma’s gesture was publicized, so she is being recognized. Salma’s public display of her generosity I believe was made in the effort to bring awareness to the rest of the world about how we can do the same.

We may not be able to go to Africa to feed a baby, but there is a hell of a lot of work that can be done here, in our own country and communities.

Let’s start by giving ourselves a pat in the back for taking care of our own.

But I am sure there are plenty of minority groups who do contribute, even in far away places such as Africa, that we don’t hear about.

It doesn’t change, that’s the beauty of it! Considering all things equal , as far as the mothers being in good health, breastmilk is UNIVERSAL. It has all the qualities and nutrients in every woman around the world who can produce breastmilk.

There is absolutley nothing wrong with breastfeeding someone elses child, the milk is all the same. And for those that are retards, there is actually a profession for women who have abundent milk supplies which whom are “Wet Nurses”. And women can pay these “Wet nurses” to breastfeed their own infants if they cannot. Dumb asses.

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/TheLaStraw/ TheLaStraw

I have a big problem with Selma H.breast feeding someone else’s child. It is much more unnatural to feed a human child cow milk than it is to give a human baby human breast milk.

Breast milk is healthier for a child however there is a boundary that was crossed here. This is audacious behavior going to the very root of her arrogance.

If she is just on a Humanitarian tour and just decided to take it upon herself to breastfeed another woman’s child, I have a big issue with that. Acting as a “wet nurse” to a child once does not resolve the issue the child has. That is like buying a meal for a hungry person, watching them eat it and expecting them never to be hungry again.

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/Strwbry1/ Strwbry1

I think some people have a complex about breats. Look at how the Janet suberbowl thing was largely blown out of proportion. This is just another example. It’s her breast, her milk, and the baby’s mama is sitting right there and she good. So, what’s the big deal? I think people are just upset because they are not ready to breast feed another womans child. so, they looking at her like she’s crazy for breast feeding that child, that’s taboo. It isn’t your baby, so why are you tripping?

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/hotmama2345/ hotmama2345

There is nothing wrong breastfeeding someone else child, because that mother couldn’t breast feed. If u are a mother you not going to let your child to be hungry. The mother let Salma Hayek so there no problem. so people need to think about the baby not the solution about another woman breastfeeding.

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/phenomeNELL/ phenomeNELL

I don’t have a problem that she fed another baby in that way. I think that if the mother is okay with it then no worries, but i do agree with TheLaStraw in that its not only arrogant but ignorant to think that this one breast feeding session is going to cure anything and that she’s actually done something significant for this child….is she going to continue pumping and shipping out her milk for the baby or something??? prolly not. ohhh these hollywood humanitarians…lets look at the bigger picture.

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/Ms_blaze_2005/ Ms_blaze_2005

i agree 100% with hotmama!!if MY child will die of starvation…..shat, come breastfeed my baby…its a bigger issue than just someone sticking their boob in another babies mouth…she did a GREAT thing and hopefully saved a life….that is a blessing….GOD may have allowed her to be there at that time and date, JUST FOR THAT REASON….THINK???

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/lookin4myking/ lookin4myking

I thin that what Ms. Hayek did was natural and was something that has been around since the beginning of time. There were times in our worlds history that women died in childbirth or were too weak, ill or malnourished to feed the newborn. Wet nurses have been around forever. Remember the story of Moses??? It doesn’t matter if the breast milk is from the mother or not….the nutrients, enzymes and general makeup of breast milk is virtually the same regardless of race. That being said, I myself was nursed by my own mother a million years ago. Back then women were on a maternity ward and were six or so beds to a room…not private like most hospitals are today. There was a young girl who had been raped in the bed next to my mother’s. The young girl was not sure if she could keep the child and wasn’t too keen on nursing. The nurses weren’t very helpful to her at all and the baby just cried and cried. The girl was all alone and didn’t know what to do so, my mother got out of bed and went to her and took the screaming baby from her and nursed it…me on one side and the other baby on the other side. The girl cried and cried when she saw her baby calm down and have it’s hunger quenched. She asked my mom to show her and soon she fed her own child and began to bond with her baby…. she kept the child after all. My mom would see her around town every once in a while and the two would smile and say hello, their bond was private yet profound. So, the act of nursing another woman’s child or allowing another woman to nurse your child really comes down to one of the most natural instincts that we all have and that’s the act of “survival”. Not to sound cliche but sometimes it does take a village. Now, I’m not saying that new mother’s should get together and have nursing parties and swap babies….(just stopping the skeptics before someone suggests it sarcastically….LOL)
I thank the men who have understood the natural and beautiful act that took place and to those who didn’t think it was right…..what if the child was your own and your child’s mother was unable to feed him/her and bottles and formula weren’t readily available to you like they are here in the U.S.? Would you think it unnatural then or would you prefer your child starve to death….maybe ya just gotta be a mama to get it?….i dunno….I’m just sayin……

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/BrAiDs_N_aFrOs/ BrAiDs_N_aFrOs

don’t see a problem with this, is called a wet nurse for those of you unfamiliar with this. and when i was bady i had one. also breast fed badies turn out to be much more healthier.

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/AMG7/ AMG7

For all the comments saying that her doing this one time is not going to “cure anything” are not looking at the bigger picture. It’s thoughts like that that keep people in situations that they are in. If someone doesn’t start somewhere, how would it ever get changed? Stop being the snob looking down at what she did and start being part of the solution!

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/Luvv2LuvYa/ Luvv2LuvYa

I think that while being a good humanitarian was probably what she had in mind to do but breast feeding creates a bond for the mother and the baby. Since Salma is in fact a hollywood actress where are all the boxes and boxes of Enfamil or Similac that she could have paid to have transported into Africa. And feeding one child makes them full for a while but what about for the next feeding? and the rest of the babies? and other mothers who cannot give their child nourishing breastmilk? do they get some of her milk too??? think about it. it might have been a nice gesture but look at the long term

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/NuYoricena/ NuYoricena

For all ou narrow minded people, what she did, did change something. She gave tha baby a chance. She showed compassion and concern as a mother and as a person. I am a new mother and there is nothing i wouldn’t do for my daughter. And as a mother I wouldn’t be able to stare at a child and see them cry in pain because of hunger and not help. She showed that woman that there are people out there who still give a damn about other people. Even if it was for cameras those people will never be the same. God placed her there at that time and with that in her heart, so please people don’t look down your nose. Look in your hearts and tell me would you let a baby starve?? God Bless you Salma.

I think is was very generous of Salma to do that. I remember when I had my first son, I was unable to breast feed him because of a clogged duct in one of my breasts. I was so disappointed, and I asked my mother, … “What did women do in the biblical days when they could not breast feed their baby?” my mom said, “the woman would find a nursing mother who could nurse her child.” I think they were once called “wet nurses” women who breast feed babies for moms who were unable to. This is ancient stuff folks, it’s not unusual, it’s just News for young folks who didn’t know. Salma, did a good thing for this baby, she blessed that baby with nurishment.

    God Bless you Salma

I agree with the one poster. Salma wa stripping. Everybody trying to out do Angelina. So what if she feed the baby ONCE…that does not solve the problem that the mother cannot feed the baby with her breast or that the baby needs baby formula. With technology the way it is, babies do not rely on breast milk alone.

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/treetothe3rd/ treetothe3rd

i think what she did was wonderful, ppl have been doing it for centuries. even doctors now tell u that u don’t have to be the birth mother to breast feed. the mother couldn’t produce milk, did she object? ppl need 2 find something else to talk about, not someone trying to help out.

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/RAGLANDIV/ RAGLANDIV

One woman breastfeeding another woman’s baby is not uncommon or unheard of. For centuries, the babies of “upper class” women have been breastfed by “wetnurses”, women who were either slaves or hired as “nannies”, who took care of the children from birth until leaving home to enter the world on their own. These women were often much closer to the children than their own mothers.

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/friday2u/ friday2u

What she did in of itself is not wrong. I resent the fact that she turned it into a photo op. Actors are used to doing many things for publicity.
She could have done what she did without
being filmed on the spot, and out of the range of cameras. Or, with her money she could have hired not just one but several wet nurses for those hungry babies.

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/vibewithme/ vibewithme

Being open minded seems to be a thing of the past. She is not “bonding” with the baby, she is giving the baby nourishment. People in Calfornia should be more open minded and not quick to “judge”. Yes, we are intitled to our opinion, however, put yourself inthis womens shoes and yes, I would be greatful if the situation was reversed.

i dont think any thing is wrong with this if a child is hungry, feed them what u have in slavery times the slave woman breast fed the white and black babies my paternal grandma who was a share cropper fed her neices and nephew and my dad ,along with my aunts , she said who ever was around in the feilds thats who nursed the babes, so it all good for the baby,in those types of situations , where no baby formula is around to give to the baby, better he starve, thats not right feed them, this is country that AIDS ridened ,so good, untainted breast milk is needed.it was a wonderful, instictive maternal act on her part if i had to do it for a starving baby i would too.i breast fed both of my sons and it is a act of kindness to share her milk with a innocent baby who needed nutrition to survive.

A lactating mother, that hears a baby cry that is not even hers will begin to spill milk. I breast fed my first born, it was convenient, afforable and most of all healthy for my baby. I know Selma did the right thing, and the natural thing.

She feed a hungry baby..big deal. she didn’t cause the child any harm only nourishment. I guess because it was an african baby people have something to say but in the end she is a mother and she saw a hungry baby and she fed the little boy or girl. I would of done the same thing, we need more women like her.
